The Green Bay Packers selected Central Michigan running back Lew Nichols III in the seventh round (No. 235 overall) of the 2023 NFL draft.

Height: 5-10
Weight: 220
Age: 21
From: Detroit, MI

Breakdown: Big, thick running back with power, quick feet and ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. Rushed for over 3,000 yards and caught 71 passes at CMU. Led the FBS in rushing and all-purpose yards in 2021. Excellent contact balance.

Brugler’s scouting report: “A two-year starter at Central Michigan, Nichols was the bell-cow back in offensive coordinator Paul Petrino’s multiple run scheme. He earned MAC Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2021 with an FBS-best 2,186 all-purpose yards and 1,848 rushing yards, but his rushing yards per game dropped from 142.2 to only 68.4 in 2022 as he battled injury. With his blend of quickness and power, Nichols can be a tackle breaker and won’t need gaping holes to reach the second level. But he can be methodical at times as he follows his blocks and needs to better anticipate openings before they present themselves. Overall, Nichols is a productive, determined runner with solid feel between the tackles, but his next-level potential will be capped by a lack of creativity with the ball in his hands and inconsistent passing-down skills. His workhorse approach could get him on the field in the right situation.”

Zierlein’s scouting report: “Early down back with good size and power. Nichols runs with solid vision and the ability to create yardage after contact, but he needs room to gain momentum and doesn’t have the wiggle to create for himself if the blocking falters. He’s smooth in his cuts, but he lacks the suddenness and play speed to stay a step ahead of NFL defenders. Nichols has an outside chance of making an NFL roster.”

15 late-round prospects Broncos could target in 2023 NFL draft

Here’s a quick look at 15 late-round prospects the Broncos could target in the 2023 NFL draft.

The Denver Broncos do not have first- or second-round picks to use in the 2023 NFL draft, so in order to have a great class (barring a trade up), general manager George Paton will have to find gems in the mid and late rounds of the draft.

The Broncos currently have five draft picks: Nos. 67 and 68 overall in the third round, No. 108 in the fourth, No. 139 in the fifth and No. 195 in the sixth. Denver does not currently hold a pick in the seventh round, but the club might acquire additional picks through draft-day trades.

Paton has made six trades through his first two drafts with the Broncos, trading down four times. It wouldn’t be surprising to see him trade down again this year to add more picks.

Today, we’re taking a quick look at 15 prospects that Denver could target in the fifth, sixth and seventh (late rounds) of the 2023 NFL draft.

Broncos host RB Lew Nichols III on pre-draft visit

The Broncos recently brought in Central Michigan RB Lew Nichols III for a pre-draft visit. He led the NCAA with 1,848 rushing yards in 2021.

The Denver Broncos recently hosted Central Michigan (FBS) running back Lew Nichols III on a pre-draft visit, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.

Nichols (5-11, 222 pounds) had a huge breakout season in 2021, leading the NCAA in rushing yards (1,848) and scoring 16 touchdowns. Nichols also totaled 40 receptions for 338 yards and two receiving touchdowns that year.

After playing 13 games as a junior, Nichols was available for nine games as a senior in 2022 as he battled various injuries. He rushed for 601 yards and six touchdowns last fall, seeing his yards-per-carry average drop from 5.4 in 2021 down to 3.4 in 2022.

Nichols is now projected to be a late-round prospect or undrafted free agent candidate later this month. Barring a trade down, the Broncos’ latest pick in the draft is set to be No. 195 overall in the sixth round. Denver seems more likely to target Nichols as a UDFA than to draft him in the sixth round.

The 2023 NFL draft will be held in Kansas City from April 27-29.

Packers host Central Michigan RB Lew Nichols III on official pre-draft visit

The Green Bay Packers hosted Central Michigan running back Lew Nichols III on an official top-30 visit ahead of the 2023 NFL draft.

The Green Bay Packers hosted Central Michigan running back Lew Nichols III on an official top-30 visit ahead of the 2023 NFL draft, according to Dave Birkett of Detroit Free Press.

Teams are allowed 30 visits with prospects before the draft. The Packers’ current reported list can be found here: Tracking Packers’ official pre-draft visits ahead of 2023 NFL draft.

Nichols, a Detroit native, produced 3,636 total yards and scored 29 total touchdowns over 32 games. He rushed 614 times for 3,061 yards and 26 touchdowns and caught 71 passes for 575 yards and three touchdowns while at Central Michigan.

In 2021, Nichols rushed for an FBS-high 1,848 yards, the second-most all-time at the school, and created an FBS-high 2,186 all-purpose yards. He played in only nine games while battling injury in 2022.

The 5-11, 222-pound running back will work out for NFL scouts on Monday.

Nichols’ combination of size, short-area quickness and receiving ability could make him an intriguing player for teams wanting a running back on Day 3.

The Packers need to establish long-term security at running back with a pick in the 2023 draft. Aaron Jones has a ballooning cap hit in 2024, and A.J. Dillon is entering the final year of his rookie deal.
