CB Alex Austin announces he’s re-signing with Patriots

CB Alex Austin announces he’s staying in New England

Alex Austin, who was set to be an exclusive rights free agent, is staying with the New England Patriots in 2024.

The 22-year-old cornerback made the announcement on social media on Thursday afternoon. It’s a good move for the Patriots to continue facilitating depth in their defensive backfield with a young player who showed real promise as a rookie.

Austin signed with the Patriots in November after brief stints with the Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans. The fit in New England was immediate, and Austin wasted no time making plays down the stretch. He had nine tackles, two pass deflections and one interception in five games with the Patriots.

“It’s official.. I’m back for another one!! Can’t wait to turn up with y’all this season… Let’s run it!” Austin posted on X.

Austin’s continued development will be something to keep an eye on next season, as he has shown flashes as a legitimate playmaker. It’s still surprising that two other teams passed on him.

He could end up being one of many defensive steals lingering from the Bill Belichick era.

Studs and duds in Patriots’ New Year’s Eve loss to Bills

Who were the studs and duds in the Patriots’ 27-21 loss to the Bills.

The New England Patriots’ short-lived excitement from their Christmas Eve upset win over the Denver Broncos came crashing to a halt at Orchard Park on Sunday.

Despite a valiant effort, the Patriots failed to overcome a run-in with the AFC East division rival Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium.

There were far too many self-inflicted wounds for them to really have a chance on the road against a potential playoff contender. The Patriots turned the ball over four times in total, and the Bills dominated in time of possession.

It’s still amazing that the Patriots were able to keep things competitive, despite all of their mistakes. They dropped a 27-21 loss on the road against one of the hottest teams in football. There’s no shame in losing like that to the Bills.

Here are the studs and duds from the game:

Instant analysis, recap of Bills’ win over the Patriots

Instant analysis, recap of #Bills’ win over the #Patriots:

The Buffalo Bills knocked off the New England Patriots, 27-21. The win brings the Bills one step closer to a playoff berth.

The victory also put Buffalo’s poor Week 7 loss at Foxborough to rest.

However, the game didn’t start so well for the Bills.

Jalen Reagor returned the opening kickoff 98 yards to stun a packed Highmark Stadium. Reagor put a spin move around kicker Tyler Bass at midfield to ultimately break free for the score.

Buffalo’s defense made the first big play for the Bills. Rasul Douglas tipped a Bailey Zappe pass. Ed Oliver made a diving play to reel in the interception. Buffalo’s offense couldn’t do much with the turnover, only gaining four yards on the drive. Bass made a 35-yard field goal to get the Bills on the board.

Buffalo’s defense continued their pressure on Zappe and the Patriots offense. Douglas jumped a route and picked off Zappe. It was the second New England drive that Buffalo’s defense stopped on the first play of the series.

This time, the Bills offense did enough to find the end zone. The four-play, 14-yard drive ended with a one-yard rushing touchdown by Josh Allen. The push gave Buffalo their first lead of the game, 10-7.

Buffalo forced their third turnover of the half with a Christian Benford-forced fumble. Benford ripped the ball out of Patriots tight end Pharoah Brown’s hands and recovered the fumble. Even with great field position, Buffalo could not muster much on the offensive end, once again settling for a Bass field goal.

The Bills continued their dominance on defense, forcing a fourth turnover in the first half. Douglas picked off his second pass of the half. The veteran cornerback returned the interception for a touchdown, giving Buffalo a comfortable 20-7 lead.

However, the Patriots offense would finally put together a sustained drive. Methodically, Zappe led New England into Bills territory. Zappe avoided the Bills blitz on multiple plays. On the final play of the series, Zappe ducked out of the pocket and ran for a 17-yard touchdown.

It was now the Patriots’ turn to make a play of defense. Allen launched deep down the sidelines into double coverage. Alex Austin came away with the pick, and the Patriots offense was back in possession with a chance to take the lead before half time.

New England drove down into Bills territory, only to be thwarted by the Buffalo secondary. The Bills played a shell defense on third down, forcing Zappe to take a checkdown and settling for a field goal attempt. The kick drifted wide left, and the Bills entered halftime with a 20-14 lead.

Buffalo’s offense took the game by storm right out of the halftime break. Allen completed his first big pass downfield, hitting Dalton Kincaid for a 51-yard pass. Buffalo moved the ball to the one-yard line. Once again, the Bills used the “tush push” to get Allen into the end zone for his second rushing score of the day. Buffalo led 27-14 early in the third quarter.

New England kept the game within reach. The Patriots defense forced a Buffalo punt. On the ensuing drive, New England hit a couple of big plays to put them into a prime scoring situation. Jalen Reagor caught a 39-yard over-the-shoulder catch to bring them into Bills territory. Then, DeMario Douglas scurried on a 17-yard screen pass. Ezekiel Elliott bulled his way into the end zone on a six-yard dash to bring the Patriots within a score. Buffalo held the lead 27-21 with 11 minutes remaining in the game.

New England’s defense forced a Buffalo punt on the next drive. Allen fumbled while attempting to scramble for a first down. The Bills punted and pinned the Patriots inside their five-yard line.

The Bills defense, as they did all game, limited the Patriots offense. Buffalo forced a three-and-out. From there, the Bills salted the game away. Buffalo ran 11 plays and finished off the final five minutes of the game to take the victory.

Bill Belichick pleased with this player following Sunday’s game

One rookie’s performance in particular caught coach Bill Belichick’s eye on Sunday.

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick was pleased with the way rookie corner Alex Austin played on Sunday.

Austin found out he was playing just before kickoff against the Kansas City Chiefs. He played every snap and made three tackles. The rookie Oregon State product was a seventh-round draft selection by the Buffalo Bills.

He took the place of J. C. Jackson, who was reportedly unavailable for the game due to mental health issues, per his agent Neil Schwartz, via ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The emergence of Austin could be a positive development, with Jackson’s availability fluctuating over the past couple of months.

It will be interesting to see if Austin can continue to perform well enough to possibly stick on the Patriots’ roster.

Patriots had a key return and welcomed newcomer at Thursday’s practice

The Patriots welcomed a newcomer and got a key player back at Thursday’s practice.

The New England Patriots were still missing several players at practice on Thursday. However, one key player was back in the fold after missing Wednesday’s practice, and that was tight end Pharoah Brown.

DeVante Parker, Trent Brown, Davon Godchaux and Calvin Anderson were all out of Thursday’s practice. There was also a debut on the field with cornerback Alex Austin, who just signed to the 53-man roster, getting in practice reps with the team.

Austin was a seventh-round draft pick by the Buffalo Bills earlier this year. He was cut by the team in August, and the Houston Texans picked him up.

He was released from the Texans on November 1.

Brown has been one of the pleasant surprises in the Patriots’ passing game. The tight end’s return to practice is a positive development. The organization also needs secondary depth, and that’s where Austin can make an impact.

It has been a revolving door of Patriots players coming and going this week. We’ll see if they can put the pieces together fast enough to bounce back with a win on Sunday against the Washington Commanders.

Projected rookie contracts for each of the #Bills’ 2023 draft picks:

The Buffalo Bills have six new rookies via the 2023 NFL draft. Eventually they will all sign their contracts, but those are mostly known already.

The NFL has a system in place which essentially locks in rookie contracts through a wage scale. Depending on where a player is drafted, his contract value will vary. The standard rookie deal is four years, so that applies across the board, but their salaries, signing bonuses and total value depend on their draft slot.

Spotrac has those numbers down for all rookies. Here’s how they project for the Bills:
