8 Panthers players held out of practice on Wednesday

The Panthers held out eight players from Wednesday’s practice.

The Carolina Panthers have some battle scars after fighting through their first win of the 2023 season.

In their first official session leading up to their Week 9 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts, the team held out eight players on Wednesday. Those who did not participate due to injury included wideouts DJ Chark (elbow) and Laviska Shenault Jr. (ankle) and veteran pass rusher Justin Houston (hamstring).

Carolina did, however, see a bit out of linebackers Brian Burns (elbow) and Frankie Luvu (hip) as well as safety Vonn Bell (quadriceps)—who were all limited. Bell has missed the past two games.

Here is Wednesday’s injury report in its entirety:

Panthers Week 8 injury report: Brian Burns questionable vs. Texans

The Panthers have listed OLB Brian Burns (elbow) as questionable for Week 8’s matchup with the Texans.

Even as they come out of their bye week, the Carolina Panthers may not be as healthy as they could be for Sunday’s matchup against the Houston Texans.

Outside linebacker Brian Burns, who was not present at Friday’s practice, has been listed as questionable for the contest. The two-time Pro Bowl pass rusher popped up on yesterday’s injury report with an elbow issue.

Burns may be joining safety Vonn Bell (quadriceps) on the sideline, as the veteran defensive back has been ruled out for a second straight game. Bell will definitely be joined by wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr., who sustained an ankle injury in the Week 6 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

But, in a bit of good news, right guard Austin Corbett was a full participant today and has been cleared without a game designation. He could now be in line to make his 2023 debut after tearing his ACL in last year’s regular-season finale.

Here’s the team’s final injury report for the week:

Injury Wednesday Thursday Friday Game status

Brian Burns listed as limited participant at Thursday’s practice

Panthers OLB Brian Burns (elbow) was a limited participant at Thursday’s practice.

Carolina Panthers outside linebacker Brian Burns probably isn’t going anywhere by the time the trade deadline passes on Tuesday. So until then, the only status in question may be the one for Sunday’s matchup against the Houston Texans.

The two-time Pro Bowl pass rusher was added to the team’s Week 8 injury report on Thursday. Burns, who leads the Panthers in sacks (4.0), was listed as a limited participant for this afternoon’s practice session with an elbow injury.

Additionally, safety Vonn Bell and wideout Laviska Shenault Jr. both missed a second consecutive outing. Starting right tackle Taylor Moton was also held out on a rest day.

Here is the entire report from Thursday:

Laviska Shenault Jr. on crutches, in walking boot following ankle injury

Panthers WR Laviska Shenault Jr. was on crutches and in a walking boot after sustaining an ankle injury on Sunday.

The Carolina Panthers may have to put yet another player on the shelf.

Wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. made an early exit from Sunday’s 42-21 loss to the Miami Dolphins. The fourth-year pass catcher and former second-round pick had to be helped off the field and carted away after sustaining what was ultimately determined to be an ankle injury.

Following the game, Shenault Jr. was seen on crutches and wearing a walking boot on his right foot. Vashti Hurt of Carolina Blitz and David Newton of ESPN were first with the observation.

The Panthers are already without a handful of key players. On offense, they’ve lost left guard Brady Christensen (biceps), didn’t have Miles Sanders (shoulder) and are still waiting on right guard Austin Corbett (knee) to return. On defense, they’re down—to some degree or another—cornerback Jaycee Horn (hamstring), linebacker Shaq Thompson (fibula) and safeties Vonn Bell (quadriceps) and Xavier Woods (hamstring).

Head coach Frank Reich, in addition to Shenault Jr., also provided some newer injuries from the Week 6 defeat. They’ll now have to monitor outside linebacker Yetur Gross-Matos (hamstring), linebacker Frankie Luvu (hip) and guard Calvin Throckmorton (calf).

So, yeah, the injured and 0-6 Panthers are probably glad their bye week is here.

Laviska Shenault Jr. exits Week 6 game with ankle injury

Panthers WR Laviska Shenault Jr. was carted off with an ankle injury. He is questionable to return.

Update (2:44 p.m. ET):

The Carolina Panthers started off fast and furious down in South Beach on Sunday, jumping out to a shocking 14-0 lead in the first quarter over the 4-1 Miami Dolphins. But the tide would proceed to turn—and wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr., unfortunately, got caught up in it.

Shenault Jr. exited during the second quarter of the contest with what was originally announced as a leg injury. Further clarification, thanks to Augusta Stone of Panthers.com, revealed he sustained a fibula injury.

The setback came with seven minutes remaining in the first half, when Shenault Jr. was wrapped up on a reception at Carolina’s own 25-yard line. After he was tended to by trainers and brought to the sideline, the fourth-year pass catcher was carted off into the locker room.

To that point, Shenault Jr. had recorded three grabs for 15 yards and a 2-yard run on the day. Running back Raheem Blackshear took over on kick return duties.

As of halftime, Shenault Jr. remains questionable to return.

Thomas Brown talks about finding opportunities for Laviska Shenault Jr.

Panthers OC Thomas Brown on WR Laviska Shenault Jr.: He’s probably the most effective guy we have on offense when it comes to creatin’ for himself

Similarly to safety/linebacker/cornerback/slot defender Jeremy Chinn, wide receiver/running back Laviska Shenault Jr. is a Swiss Army knife for the Carolina Panthers. But also like Chinn, Shenault Jr. is a Swiss Army knife that the Carolina Panthers are still figuring out how to use.

Offensive coordinator Thomas Brown was asked about the versatile weapon by Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer on Thursday. He went on to praise Shenault Jr. for his flexible game.

“To me, he just plays ball,” Brown replied. “I think when it comes to evaluatin’ his tape before, he’s probably the most effective guy we have on offense when it comes to creatin’ for himself. We talk about bein’ able to create explosives, break tackles, make guys miss. He’s super talented when it comes to that.

“So tryin’ to find as many ways as possible to hone in on a specific role, move him around. He’s kind of a position-less player. We play him at all three spot receiver-wise plus tailback as well. So, very versatile guy for us.”

The former second-round pick may be versatile, but he isn’t too busy. Shenault Jr. has played in 21.2 percent of the team’s offensive snaps, which currently stands as a career-low.

In those looks, Shenault Jr. has recorded four receptions for 28 yards and has rushed 11 times for 53. So, with starter Miles Sanders currently dealing with a shoulder injury, perhaps Shenault Jr. (and his strong average of 4.8 yards per carry) could get even more chances to just play ball this weekend.

Throwback Thursday: Remembering when Laviska Shenault Jr. led CU past Arizona State in 2018

Laviska Shenault Jr. was a one-man wrecking crew against Arizona State in 2018

We’ve witnessed a resurgence of Colorado’s offense this year as Shedeur Sanders and a host of weapons have turned one of the worst offenses in school history into a force to be reckoned with.

When looking at the Buffs’ recent history, nothing describes a “force” quite like the play of Laviska Shenault Jr. Shenault was a unicorn of an offensive weapon as he could play all over the field. The big wide receiver lined up outside, in the slot or as an H-back. He was also unique in how he could run the wildcat to pick up short yardage. On Oct. 6, 2018, the Arizona State Sun Devils saw all of that from Shenault.

That day, the Buffaloes beat the Sun Devils, 28-21, with Shenault accounting for all four of CU’s touchdowns. Shenault caught 13 passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns through the air while adding five rushing attempts for 13 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Shenault also helped put the nail in ASU’s coffin with two straight catches on third downs that moved the chains when CU was trying to bleed the clock.

DJ Chark feels ‘optimistic’ about Week 1 status

Albeit on a limited basis, DJ Chark, Terrace Marshall Jr. and Laviska Shenault Jr. all returned to practice for the Panthers on Tuesday.

The last thing the Carolina Panthers’ receiver room and DJ Chark needed was another injury. Well, neither avoided it—as the former Pro Bowl wideout sustained a hamstring injury a week ago.

But, at least both sides seem positive about the progress that’s been made since.

On Tuesday, Chark—per Joe Person of The Athletic—said he’s feeling optimistic about his status for Week 1.

And just moments earlier, head coach Frank Reich spoke not only about him, but also about the returns of Terrace Marshall Jr. (back) and Laviska Shenault Jr. (concussion) to the practice field this afternoon.

“Terrace was out there today, as you guys know, and got some work out there today,” he said. “He didn’t do everything, but did enough. It was a good first step. Obviously, DJ’s workin’ inside, so we’ll see how he continues to progress. I know these guys are doin’ everything they can.”

Chark stayed inside the team’s practice bubble during the session.

Reich then pivoted to Shenault Jr.

“I know he’s progressing in the steps,” he said. “My apologies for not knowing which step he’s at.

“But he’s trending positively, yes.”

Hopefully for Reich, the Panthers and three wideouts, that trends all the way into Atlanta on Sept. 10.
