LSU picks up big-time Syracuse defensive back transfer Duce Chestnut

The Tigers picked up a former Freshman All-American in the portal.

The Tigers are not done yet in the transfer portal, especially when it comes to rebuilding the secondary. On Sunday, LSU landed a commitment from sophomore Syracuse cornerback [autotag]Duce Chestnut[/autotag], a starter who played in 24 games in two seasons.

Chestnut heads for greener pastures after a stellar two-year career in which he totaled 83 tackles, four interceptions and 13 pass breakups. The Camden, New Jersey, native was named a Freshman All-American in 2021 by multiple national publications and finished as the runner-up in ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year voting.

After the departures of several veterans including [autotag]Jarrick Bernard-Converse[/autotag] and [autotag]Mekhi Garner[/autotag], LSU will turn to Chestnut and its two other transfer corners in Texas A&M’s [autotag]Denver Harris[/autotag] and Southeastern Louisiana’s [autotag]Zy Alexander[/autotag], as well as the three true freshmen it signed at the position.

With only [autotag]Laterrance Welch[/autotag] and [autotag]Sevyn Banks[/autotag] as scholarship returning players at corner, it’s not a surprise coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] has once again opted for an aggressive transfer portal strategy to address corner.

LSU again wearing thin in the secondary entering the offseason

How Brian Kelly rebuilds the secondary will go a long way toward shaping LSU’s 2023 roster.

One of Brian Kelly’s first tasks at LSU this time last year was rebuilding the secondary.

The conclusion of 2021 saw [autotag]Derek Stingley Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Cordale Flott[/autotag] head to the NFL while [autotag]Eli Ricks[/autotag] and [autotag]Dwight McGlothern[/autotag] enter the transfer portal.

LSU returned almost no experience at cornerback and a group of safeties that struggled.

The coaching staff did an admirable job filling the holes, getting the likes of [autotag]Mekhi Garner[/autotag], [autotag]Jarrick Bernard-Converse[/autotag], [autotag]Greg Brooks Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Joe Foucha[/autotag] from the transfer portal.

[autotag]Major Burns[/autotag], [autotag]Jay Ward[/autotag] and [autotag]Sage Ryan[/autotag] took some steps forward along with the portal additions, and the Tigers’ secondary did a fine job in 2022.

Kelly and company will now be faced with a similar task this offseason.

Ward has declared for the draft and will likely be joined by Bernard-Converse and Garner. The latter has eligibility left but played well enough to earn a spot on Sundays.

Foucha, a fifth-year player, will be off to give it a shot in the league too.

[autotag]Demarius McGhee[/autotag] and [autotag]Raydarious Jones[/autotag], two talented recruits who have been depth pieces for the last couple of years, have entered the portal.

The Tigers should remain fine at safety. There’s a chance LSU gets Brooks back along with Burns. Ryan played a lot of nickel this fall but has the ability to play on the backend. LSU’s 2023 recruiting class currently holds three commitments from blue-chip safeties, too.

The picture grows murky when looking at the cornerbacks. There aren’t many in-house options, especially on the outside.

There’s still [autotag]Sevyn Banks[/autotag], the talented Ohio State transfer whose career has been interrupted by injuries. He made his way back on the field for LSU but was injured once again shortly after.

With a full, healthy offseason under his belt, he could emerge as a solid option in 2023.

Then there’s [autotag]Laterrance Welch[/autotag] and [autotag]Jaelyn Davis-Robinson[/autotag], two talented freshmen that impressed [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] in fall camp but took a redshirt. Without significant additions in the portal, LSU will be relying on both to develop quickly. Even if both pan out in 2023, depth is still a major concern.

The Tigers could be gearing up to add some big-time corners to their 2023 freshmen class. LSU is well positioned with [autotag]Desmond Ricks[/autotag] and [autotag]Javien Toviano[/autotag].

Landing Ricks and Toviano a year after Welch and Davis-Robinson would lay a young foundation of talent and put LSU in a place where it wasn’t relying on the portal to build its secondary every year.

When LSU does start looking in the portal, look for the Tigers to get after names like Fentrell Cypress and JQ Hardaway. Both corners are two of the better players currently on the transfer market and respectively come from Virginia and Cincinnati. LSU has staffers with connections to both programs.

LSU landed two quality corners last year in Garner and Bernard-Converse. You could even throw in [autotag]Colby Richardson[/autotag], who made some positive contributions, as well.

It’s tough to imagine LSU’s defense having the same level of success this year without them. It’ll be just as critical to land at least two quality corners again.

Five freshmen most likely to see the field for LSU in 2022

Examining which of LSU’s newcomers will have a chance to make an immediate impact in 2022

With signing day now done, there is some clarity regarding what rosters may look like across college football in 2022.

It’s been a hectic couple of months all over the sport. With coaching changes, a flurry of transfers, and players declaring for the NFL draft. This off-season has provided more roster shakeup than any in recent memory.

That holds true for LSU as well.

Over the last couple of years, the previous coaching staff didn’t demonstrate much competence when it came to managing a roster. On top of that, coaching changes always lead to their own list of personnel shakeups.

There will be more moves to come throughout the spring and summer. It isn’t over yet. But the roster LSU has now should look close to the one it takes the field in the opener against Florida State.

All things considered, LSU will bring in a decent freshmen class. Given the inexperience all over the team, a lot of these guys will have opportunities to see the field right away.

Good teams usually need some contributions from first-year players if they want to have success. That could go even further for LSU, who’s just counting on these recruits to have enough athletes on scholarship.

Let’s look at the five freshmen most likely to see the field in 2022.

Recruiting: A pair of LSU commits on flip watch

Two highly-touted 2022 commits could be looking elsewhere.

This is the time of year where you start to hear rumblings of potential flips across the recruiting landscape. Just six weeks away from the early signing period, plenty of teams are making a run at players committed elsewhere. Two top recruits that have pledged to LSU are the targets of several teams according to 247Sports.

We start with the Elite 11 quarterback, Walker Howard.

Walker Howard, Five-Star Quarterback

SCOTT CLAUSE/USA TODAY Network

This seems fairly obvious given the recent visit to Notre Dame for the USC game this past weekend. With the uncertainty surrounding the LSU head coaching search, will Howard fit whatever offense they bring to Baton Rouge with this hire? Howard is a legacy recruit with his father being a former quarterback for the program. However, we have seen legacy players go elsewhere before, just ask Texas about the Brockermeyer boys.

What 247Sports Says…

Ed Orgeron’s exit might seem like the main reason why longtime LSU quarterback commit Walker Howard is looking around, but Notre Dame has actually been courting the five-star signal caller for months now. Howard will likely give the Tigers’ next head coach a chance to recruit him, but the Irish aren’t going to make it easy for LSU to hang onto the Elite 11 finalist, especially after hosting Howard for an unofficial visit this past weekend for the USC game.

Latterance Welch, Four-Star Cornerback

One of the main reasons why this name comes as no surprise is what happens to Corey Raymond? He has helped bring some top talent to the Bayou and serves as the defensive backs coach.

What 247Sports Says…

Laterrance Welch is another LSU commit that is communicating with other programs. He was set to take an official visit to Florida State back in September, but he ended up having to cancel the trip at the last minute after injuring himself in a game the night before his scheduled departure. It sounds like the Seminoles will still get Welch on campus at some point before the Early Signing Period as he has built a strong bond with Marcus Woodson and others in Tallahassee.
