Re-living Anton Watson’s best moments from summer league

A look back at Anton Watson’s best moments for the Boston Celtics during Las Vegas Summer League.

Anton Watson was the 54th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. The Boston Celtics selected the five-year Gonzaga product due to his polished game and potential to become an NBA-level big in the near future. Celtics fans got their first look at Watson during the Las Vegas Summer League, where the Celtics went 2-3.

Despite DJ MacLeay’s team holding a losing record at the end of the tournament, Watson provided a good account of himself. The second-round prospect flashed NBA-ready offense, specifically on the perimeter, where he operated as a creation hub and perimeter scorer. His defense, for the most part, also shone. His ability to switch multiple positions and control driving angles made him a reliable weapon within the rotation.

Following the completion of Boston’s summer league schedule, Tomasz Kordyleski shared a highlight package of Watson’s best moments to his YouTube channel. The footage shows some high-level play on both sides of the ball from the rookie.

Which Celtics players stock has risen during summer league?

Which members of the Boston Celtics Summer League roster have seen their stock rise in recent weeks?

The Boston Celtics will play their final Summer League game on Sunday, July 21. They are 2-2 over their first four games. During the tournament in Las Vegas, Celtics fans got a closer look at recent draft additions Baylor Scheierman and Anton Watson. Neemias Queta, JD Davison and Jordan Walsh also participated in the event.

However, not every member of Boston’s Summer League roster stepped up to the plate. Some players have struggled to make an impact despite being given significant opportunities to showcase their improvements. On the other hand, some members of the Summer League roster have staked their claim and could get a closer look from the coaching staff during training camp.

In a recent episode of the “Big 3 NBA Podcast,” host A. Sherrod Blakely discussed which members of Boston’s summer league roster have seen their stock rise over the last couple of weeks with guest Noa Dalzell of Celtics Blog.

They also cover which players have hurt their chances of potentially earning playing time.

Boston’s Baylor Scheierman gets middling grade for his Las Vegas Summer League play

His shooting and occasional mistakes were enough to take the Creighton alum down a peg.

Rookie Boston Celtics shooting guard Baylor Scheierman got himself a middling grade for his play in the NBA’s 2024 Las Vegas Summer League. His shooting and occasional mistakes were enough to take the Creighton alum down a peg, evidently, from the lofty expectations of some.

The analyst we are specifically thinking of here is Bleacher Report league analyst Andy Bailey, who was a little disappointed in what he saw from Scheierman in Sin City, given his high expectations for the former Big East wing. “It’s hard to praise a shooter when he’s simply not making shots,” writes the B/R analyst. “So, while Baylor Scheierman has played hard and typically appeared to know what he was doing, going 5-of-21 from 3 over his first three games is hard to ignore.”

“Still, shooting numbers from any random, three-game sample don’t predict future performance, and Scheierman went 3-of-6 from deep in a loss on Friday,” he adds.

“On a team as loaded as the … Celtics, if he wants a shot at some regular-season minutes, he’ll have to be ready to knock those looks down when presented,” suggests Bailey. “Scheierman hasn’t been the only notable first-year Celtic, though.”

“Anton Watson, taken with the 54th pick, is averaging double-figures and had 14 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks on Friday. With all the offense Boston already has, the defense-first Watson might have a different but potentially easier path to minutes in 2024-25.”

Scheierman’s final grade for summer league? A respectable ‘C-‘.

Who are some legitimate NBA comps for Boston’s Baylor Scheierman?

What are the NBA player comparisons for Boston Celtics rookie Baylor Scheierman?

Baylor Scheierman joined the Boston Celtics as the 30th pick in the NBA Draft. The five-year product out of Creighton has impressed throughout his four games at Las Vegas Summer League. His diverse offensive game, coupled with his potential upside on the defensive end, has led Celtics fans to believe Brad Stevens may have found the steal of the draft.

As is usually the case with young talents, the Celtics fan base is looking to find NBA comparisons for their latest draft addition, with Joe Ingles being the most logical one. Scheierman has previously stated that he modeled some of his game on the veteran sharpshooter.

During a recent episode of the “How ‘Bout Them Celtics” podcast, hosts Jack Simone and Sam LaFrance discussed some potential comparisons for the rookie wing, along with answering a viewer’s question likening Scheierman to the legendary Larry Bird.

Has Anton Watson earned a roster spot?

Anton Watson was one of the Boston Celtics standout performers at Las Vegas Summer League, but has he done enough to earn a roster spot?

Anton Watson joined the Boston Celtics as the 54th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. The Gonzaga product is a low-ceiling, high-floor prospect with multiple NBA-ready skills as he enters the league. Watson has impressed throughout summer league due to his professional approach and diverse offensive game.

Watson played in all five of Boston’s games in Las Vegas, averaging 11.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists per night while shooting 51.1% from the field and 35% from deep. He also impressed on the defensive end, where he displayed a strong understanding of how to control angles to cut off driving lanes and a knack for securing rebounds in traffic.

On the latest episode of the “How ‘Bout Them Celtics” podcast, hosts Jack Simone and Sam LaFrance discuss whether Watson has earned himself a spot on Boston’s roster or whether he will be spending the upcoming season with the Maine Celtics in the G League.

Which players have stood out at summer league?

Who have been the best players throughout Las Vegas Summer League?

The Boston Celtics wrapped up their summer league season on Sunday, July 21, with a 103-98 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. Boston ended the tournament with a 2-3 record despite some strong showings from Anton Watson, Baylor Scheierman, Jaden Springer and Neemias Queta.

There were multiple standouts across summer league this season, with Reed Sheppard of the Houston Rockets arguably leading the way. With so much young talent on display throughout the tournament, it’s only fair to wonder where they all rank against each other, especially as you try to get a jump on a potential Rookie of the Year race ahead of the new season.

In a recent episode of the “How ‘Bout Them Celtics” podcast, hosts Jack Simone and Sam LaFrance discuss the best performers throughout summer league. The hosts then place each player into tiers as they attempt to rank all of the main talents from the tournament.

San Antonio Spurs rookie Stephon Castle gets a good grade for summer league

Did Castle’s injury hurt his assessment?

San Antonio Spurs rookie combo guard Stephon Castle may not have played very much in the NBA’s 2024 Las Vegas Summer League due to a scary fall and subsequently sprained wrist. But the University of Connecticut alum also played a decent amount in the Spurs’ handful of tilts in the California Classic Summer League.

Unfortunately for Castle’s summer league resume in the eyes of Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey, the B/R league analyst graded the former Husky champ solely on how he fared in Sin City in a recent assessment of how each team in the Association saw their top 2024 NBA draft recruits fare in summer league play. “He only played in one game and shot 8-of-21 from the field in it, but … Castle showed why he was the No. 4 pick in that game,” he writes.

“His perimeter defense and ability to get to the paint were on display, and it looked like Castle would pretty clearly be the summer San Antonio Spurs alpha had he not been injured.”

The impact of No. 48 pick Harrison Ingram, meanwhile, has been a little harder to spot, though he’s hit 42.9% of his 3-point attempts in Las Vegas,” suggests Bailey.

“If that translates to the regular season, he could be a floor spacer for reserve lineups.”

Castle’s final grade? A solid ‘B’.

Sin City Celtics fall to Summer Sixers 103-98 in Las Vegas Summer League consolation game

It might have come n a loss, but Jordan Walsh had his breakout game.

The Boston Celtics did not make the postseason of the NBA’s 2024 Las Vegas Summer League with their play in Sin City, but they did manage to earn themselves a consolation tilt with the Summer Philadelphia 76ers.

Not that it would matter much, with the Sin City Celtics falling to the Summer Sixers 103-98, this despite the best game from second-year Boston wing Jordan Walsh (18 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks). Guard Jaelen House (17 points, 4 boards, 6 assists) also had a good night off the bench. Forward Tyler Cook (16 points, 4 rebounds), forward Anton Watson (15 points, 4 boards, 3 assists), and wing Baylor Scheierman (13 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists) also had good games.

With the loss, the Celtics have completed their full slate of games in Las Vegas Summer League action with a 2-3 overall record.

And while such outcomes are less important than in other context, Boston got a good luck at several prospects it likely would want to bring into the team’s talent development pipeline.

How that shakes out over the next few days will signal what the Celtics’ front office values for their future rotation hopes.

What advice did Celtics alum Eddie House give his son Jaelen for summer league with Boston?

House talked about how he signed with the Celtics to play for their summer league squad.

What advice did Boston Celtics champion guard alum Eddie House give his son Jaelen ahead of Las Vegas Summer league with the Sin City Celtics this summer? Whatever intel the elder House shared with his son, it seems to be working out well, with the New Mexico alum having stood out in Boston’s later games in their summer league slate of games.

Speaking to our friends over at CLNS Media, House talked about how he signed with the Celtics to play for their summer league squad. He specifically got into his advice from his father Eddie and the tensions vs. the Summer Charlotte Hornets in the team’s win against that club.

Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what he had to say!

Boston Celtics drop final game of Las Vegas Summer League to Dallas Mavericks

Thankfully, this was not the NBA finals.

The Boston Celtics had perhaps their best game of team play in the NBA’s 2024 Las Vegas Summer League to date. But having a total of six players scoring in double figures was not enough to put the Sin City Celtics past the Summer Dallas Mavericks on this past Friday (July 19) night, falling 101-90.

The Celtics were led by guard Jaelen House with 18 points, 2 rebounds, and an impressive 9 assists. Boston also saw good games from rookie wing Baylor Scheierman (15 points, 5 boards, 3-of-6 from 3), forward Anton Watson (14 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2-of-4 from 3), wing Jordan Walsh (12 points, 11 boards, 4 assists), and forward Killian Tillie (12 points).

Forward Ron Harper Jr. also had a solid outing for the Celtics coming off the bench with 11 points.

With the loss, the Celtics’ summer league record falls to 2-2, likely ending their run in the state of Nevada until next summer/
