Paul Pierce, Sam Cassell, and Eddie House: 2008, trash talk, working with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown

Thirteen years after hanging Banner 17, the bond between members of the 2008 championship-winning Boston Celtics squad remains strong.

Thirteen years after hanging Banner 17, the bond between key members of the 2008 championship-winning Boston Celtics squad remains strong. In a recent interview, former Celtics Paul Pierce, Sam Cassell, and Eddie House traded memories from that historic season. They described the intense team practices fueled by ruthless trash talk that built an unbreakable trust and brotherhood known for its “ubuntu” ethos.

The champions emphasized how the friendships formed off court strengthened them as players and people. From team dinners to bonding overseas during training camp, they grew tight. That culture established by coach Doc Rivers and staff paved the championship path.

The 2008 title trio recently sat down for a chat as part of the team-produced “View From The Rafters” to talk old times and how they lessons they learned might lay the groundwork for a new generation of Celtics to hang Banner 18.

Eddie House fires back at Orlando Magic’s Cole Anthony for motivation comments

House also said that if he, retired since 2011, was still a motivating force for Orlando, then there might be a bigger issue for the team to contend with.

Former Boston Celtics shooting guard and current broadcaster Eddie House recently responded to comments made by Orlando Magic point guard Cole Anthony regarding how his words motivated the Magic to beat the Celtics, and continue to serve as a source of inspiration.

House, known for freely sharing his candid views, defended his statements, emphasizing that he was merely expressing his honest assessment of the team’s performance up to that point of their current rebuild. One of the focal points of House’s response was the term “garbage,” which he used to describe the Magic’s play. He clarified that his intention was not to disparage individual players but to highlight the team’s struggles.

House also said that if he, retired since 2011, was still a motivating force for Orlando, then there might be a bigger issue for the team to contend with.

Eddie House: Time for the Boston Celtics to pivot from being ‘the hunted’ to ‘the hunters’

The former Celtics sharpshooter sees clear connections between the last title Boston won and this squad.

Eddie House, former Boston Celtics shooting guard, and current NBC Sports Boston analyst, shared his perspective into the Celtics’ upcoming season on a recent episode of “Arbella Early Edition” with Trenni Casey and Cerrone Battle.

The 2008 titlist discussed the addition of former Milwaukee Bucks All-Star floor general Jrue Holiday and why he believes the team should be confident in their championship prospects. House compares the current Celtics roster to the 2008 team he hung Banner 17 with, emphasizing the importance of a winning mindset. House also touches on Hall of Fame Celtics forward Paul Pierce’s involvement with the team of today and the competitive spirit within Boston sports more generally.

Confidence, a winning mentality, and the addition of key players like Holiday have the team and its fans anticipating the season ahead — and the former Celtics sharpshooter sees clear connections between the last title Boston won and this squad because of it.

Let’s take a look at what House had to say in the clip embedded above.

Paul Pierce, Sam Cassell, and Eddie House hold impromptu 3-point shooting contest

The trio of 2008 titlists put on a show for today’s Celtics at camp.

Three legendary Boston Celtics players, Paul Pierce, Sam Cassell, and Eddie House, recently took fans down memory lane with a 3-point shooting contest joined by a few other Boston assistants during a Celtics practice session at their 2023 training camp on Thursday.

Pierce, also known as “The Truth,” is a Celtics icon who spent 15 seasons with the team. Cassell, another former Celtics star, was known for his clutch performances during his time with the team. House, a sharpshooter in his own right, played a vital role off the bench during the Celtics’ championship run in 2008. His ability to knock down 3-pointers with consistency made him a fan favorite during his time in Boston.

The shooting contest quickly caught the attention of all in the building, with even current Celtics stars pausing to watch the spectacle.

Former Orlando Magic guard Rafer Alston on the time he slapped Eddie House

Per Alston, it was “the dumbest reaction I ever had in my life.”

To be fair, former Boston Celtics shooting guard and current Boston broadcaster Eddie House has been known to celebrate quite a bit on a made shot.

In a recent interview with Bally Sports’ Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, former Orlando Magic guard Rafer Alston opened up about the time he lost his cool with the Celtics sharpshooter in the 2009 NBA playoffs.

“I thought Eddie was talking trash, and every time he scores, he’s used to celebrating, so I thought he was trying to throw a shot,” said Alston. “We were getting our butts kicked, so that was one time I didn’t want to hear it, and it was just the dumbest reaction I ever had in my life.”

“Most expensive slap I ever had,” he added, laughing.

After the game, the Magic guard had a different story, saying (via Bleacher Report’s Patrick Parsons), “I could have sworn there was a giant insect on his headband, a real nasty, bloodsucking-looking thing”.

House, evidently, took it in stride. “At first, I had no idea why he slapped me, but after hearing his explanation, I am satisfied, and I want to thank him.”

The league’s approach was a bit different, however. It suspended Alston for a game for his benevolent attempt to remove a bug from House’s headband.

Every player in Boston Celtics history who wore No. 50

This is every player in Boston’s history who wore the Celtics’ No. 50 jersey for at least one game as of Aug. 2023.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean the rest of their jerseys have little history of interest tied to them.

In fact, with 17 titles to their name and decades of competitive basketball played in them, their unretired jersey numbers pack in some of the most history not hanging from the rafters of any team in the league. To that end, we have launched our accounting of that history, with every player in every jersey worn by more than one Celtics player in the storied franchise’s history accounted for.

Today’s installment focuses on the eight players who wore No. 50 over the years as of Aug. 2023.

On this day: Eddie House, Frank Brickowski, Pervis Ellison signed; Johnny Simmons passes

On this day, the Boston Celtics signed guard Eddie House, forward Frank Brickowski, and center Pervis Ellison to the team.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, reserve guard Eddie House signed a multi-year deal with the team. The Berkeley, California native had previously played for the Miami Heat (he was drafted by that team out of Arizona State with the 37th pick of the 2000 NBA draft), Los Angeles Clippers, Charlotte Hornets, Milwaukee Bucks, the Sacramento Kings, Phoenix Suns, and (the then) New Jersey (now, Brooklyn) Nets before joining Boston in true journeyman fashion.

House would become a key part of the Celtics’ 2008 title team’s bench offense, providing microwave scoring off the bench that would end up proving critical to winning Banner 17.

He would play three seasons with Boston, averaging 7.8 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game over that stretch.

Four Boston Celtics alumni taken in new places in redraft of 2000 NBA draft class

Let’s take a look at which Celtics alumni landed where.

As Hoops Hype’s staff keep themselves busy reassessing the draft orders of the last few decades over the years, there are always a fair number of Boston Celtics alumni making moves in their re-drafts as a result.

In the H/H’s reassessment of the 2000 NBA draft class, a total of four Boston alumni ended up seeing their draft stock shift with the benefit of hindsight lifting their fortunes. And while they won’t see any pay raises or anything else of that sort given the fictitious nature of such an exercise, it’s also nice to see this group get their flowers, too.

Let’s take a look at which Celtics alumni landed where.

What should the Boston Celtics do with Jaylen Brown? Eddie House dismisses trade machine ideas

House disagrees with trading Brown for uncertain draft picks and believes coaching can help maximize his effectiveness.

There have been a surprising number of fans and analysts advocating for trading star Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown for all sorts of packages after a rough 2023 Eastern Conference finals against the Miami Heat, but former Celtics and current broadcaster Eddie House is not among them.

In a recent appearance on the NBC Sports Boston “Early Edition” show, House dismisses trade ideas for Brown and emphasizes his value to the Celtics. He suggested the Georgia native should not be constantly singled out for criticism and trade talks because fellow star wing Jayson Tatum also had ups and downs last season. House disagrees with trading Brown for uncertain draft picks and believes coaching can help maximize his effectiveness by designing plays that suit his strengths.

To hear his reasoning for yourself, be sure to take a look at the clip embedded below.

On this day: Celtics win ’81 championship vs. Rockets; Braun signed

On this day, the Boston Celtics won their 14th championship, beating the Houston Rockets in Game 6 of the 1981 NBA Finals.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the 62-20 Boston Celtics won their 14th NBA Championship with a 102-91 Game 6 triumph over the Houston Rockets in 1981 on their home floor despite going five minutes late in the game without a basket.

Forward Larry Bird led the Celtics with 27 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 assists, and forward Cedric Maxwell chipped in 19 points, 5 boards, and 6 assists. center Robert Parish added 18 points and 6 rebounds. Shooting guard Robert Reed scored 27 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists for Houston, and legendary big man Moses Malone added 23 points and 16 boards.
