Texans’ solution to run game woes has been to saddle up Deshaun Watson

The Houston Texans have had trouble running the football, but quarterback Deshaun Watson has been the instant fix for the offense.

The Houston Texans rushing offense hasn’t produced a 100-yard runner at all this season, and the team has crested the century mark only three times in 2020.

Though the Texans have had an inability to get the run game going, left tackle Laremy Tunsil knows what to do when the rushing attack stalls.

“If we can’t get that done, we’ve got to find different aspects in the offense to get that done,” Tunsil said. “If that’s get the ball in 4’s hands and let him make plays, then that’s what it is.”

Quarterback Deshaun Watson, No. 4, has been the driving force behind the Texans’ offense, and it simply isn’t because he plays the premier position through which the unit flows. Watson is fourth in the NFL with 3,201 passing yards and has thrown just five interceptions on the year.

“I told y’all a long time ago that the identity of the offense is to put the ball in 4’s hands,” said Tunsil. “The last couple of weeks I hope y’all seen what I was talking about.”

Watson has also had stellar play from his teammates to also complement his superb pocket awareness. The two-time Pro Bowler has 28 sacks on the season, the fewest of his career through the first 11 games of a season.

Said Tunsil: “It’s the whole offense. We [were] executing on every cylinder from the quarterback to the receivers to the offensive line. It’s just the offense as a whole, we execute and get things done and that helped 4 out a lot.”

Watson told reporters on Dec. 2 that he the offensive line deserves “a big Christmas present from me.”

Tunsil has a few ideas.

“I’ll take a PJ,” said Tunsil. “With all that money he got, I’ll take a PJ. I’ll take a Mercedes. Whatever he gets us will be cool, man.”

LT Laremy Tunsil says Texans can’t dwell on loss of WR Will Fuller

Houston Texans left tackle Laremy Tunsil says the team must have a next-man-up mentality with the suspension of receiver Will Fuller.

The 4-7 Houston Texans took a blow on Nov. 30 when receiver Will Fuller announced he would miss the remainder of the 2020 season with a six-game suspension.

Fuller, who violated the NFL’s performance enhancing drug policy, has his season end as the team’s leading receiver with 53 catches for 879 yards and eight touchdowns through 11 games. It was his most productive season since Houston drafted him in the first round in 2016.

Though the Texans are losing their No. 1 wideout, left tackle Laremy Tunsil believes the team has to move on.

“We can’t dwell on that for sure,” Tunsil said. “We can’t. Of course, Will is a great player and we need Will just to finish out the season and see where we go. But we can’t dwell on that. We’ve got to keep the next man up mentality and just keep looking forward and just keep moving forward.”

With Fuller out of the lineup, quarterback Brandin Cooks could become the new most-targeted receiver. A dark horse candidate would be Keke Coutee, who caught a 6-yard touchdown pass against the New England Patriots in Week 11 despite not having played an offensive snap since Week 2.

“Next man up, man,” said Tunsil. “We really live by that and we’ve got to execute it, so the next guy up has to get in the playbook and get it done.”

What the Texans have regardless of who is lined out wide is Deshaun Watson under center. The two-time Pro Bowler has not thrown an interception since Week 5, and his 28 sacks are the fewest of his career through the first 11 games.

“He’s magical,” Tunsil said. “He’s a magician for sure. He gets things done and he does it at an unbelievable rate for sure.”

Watson and the Texans will work their magic Sunday at 12:00 p.m. CT at NRG Stadium against the 7-4 Indianapolis Colts.

QB Josh McCown (illness), WR Kenny Stills (back), FB Cullen Gillaspia (back), DE Nate Orchard, WR Isaiah Coulter, and OT Charlie Heck were declared inactive for the game.

With these inactives declared, left tackle Laremy Tunsil, who has been on the injury report the last two weeks with an illness, is active and ready to play.

Texans Week 12 injury designations: Randall Cobb, Kenny Stills ruled OUT

The Detroit Lions (4-6) Week 12 opponent, the Houston Texans (3-7), have released their injury designations ahead of Thursday’s Thanksgiving Day game.

Here’s a look at the Texans’ full injury designations list.

Injury status

Player Position Injury Designation
Josh McCown QB Illness OUT
Cullen Gillaspia FB Back OUT
Randall Cobb WR (starter) Toe Placed on IR
Kenny Stills WR Quad OUT
P.J. Hall DT (starter) Knee/Shoulder OUT
Laremy Tunsil LT (starter) Illness No Designation
Senio Kelemete LG Concussion No Designation
Bryan Anger P (starter) Quad Questionable

Cobb has made a career of beating up on the Lions and Stills’ speed would have surely given the Lions issues, so Detroit catches a break with the two of them missing this game. Unfortunately, the Texans still feature solid wide receiver options, including starters Brandon Cooks and Will Fuller, as well as Keke Coutee, who will likely take over Cobb’s spot.

Tunsil missed last week’s game and Roderick Johnson filled in admirably for him. Tunsil looks ready to go with no injury designation, but if for some reason his illness pops back up again, they have a capable replacement at the ready.

Anger punted through a Quad injury last week and he is expected to play.

Texans vs. Lions Tuesday injury report: LT Laremy Tunsil would have practiced

Houston Texans left tackle Laremy Tunsil was upgraded to a full participant in Tuesday’s walkthrough as the team prepares for the Detroit Lions.

The Houston Texans had some good news coming out of their Tuesday walkthrough as they prepare for the Detroit Lions Thursday at 11:30 a.m. CT at Ford Field.

If the Texans had actually practiced, instead of holding a walkthrough as they attempt to balance rest with preparation, left tackle Laremy Tunsil would have been considered a full participant for the first time since Nov. 13. Tunsil missed all of last week’s practices with an illness, and he also missed the 27-20 win over the New England Patriots for the same reason.

Joining Tunsil as a full participant would have been guard Senio Kelemete, who is dealing with a concussion.

Receiver Randall Cobb (toe), fullback Cullen Gillaspia (back), defensive tackle P.J. Hall (knee/shoulder), and quarterback Josh McCown (illness) were classified as non-participants.

Punter Bryan Anger (right quadricep) and receiver Kenny Stills (quadricep) were labeled as limited participants.

Texans’ Romeo Crennel unsure if LT Laremy Tunsil will be ready for the Lions on Thanksgiving

Houston Texans interim coach Romeo Crennel says that left tackle Laremy Tunsil is still uncertain to play against the Detroit Lions in Week 12.

The Houston Texans still don’t know if they will have their Pro Bowl left tackle when they take on the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving at Ford Field.

After the Texans’ 27-20 win over the New England Patriots Sunday afternoon at NRG Stadium, interim coach Romeo Crennel provided an update on Laremy Tunsil. According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, Crennel stated he was still uncertain about the status of Tunsil for the Week 12 holiday affair.

Tunsil missed the Patriots game with an illness, and did not practice at all during the week. Roderick Johnson played outside at left tackle for Tunsil. Quarterback Deshaun Watson was not sacked once in the win that sent Houston to 3-7 on the season.

Also joining Tunsil as questionable are punter Bryan Anger (right quad), guard Senio Kelemete (concussion), outside linebacker Jacob Martin (not injury related), defensive end Charles Omenihu (hamstring), receiver Kenny Stills (back), and fullback Cullen Gillaspia (back), who was a late addition to the injury report. All of the players were limited participants in practice.

Running back Duke Johnson had his third consecutive day of improved participation, listed as a full participant in Friday’s practice. Johnson is the only Texans player without a designation for Sunday’s game, and is also listed as having an illness.

Texans LT Laremy Tunsil misses third straight day of practice

Houston Texans left tackle Laremy Tunsil has missed his third day of practice during Week 11’s preparation for the New England Patriots.

The Houston Texans’ prospects at left tackle are starting to get worrisome.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, left tackle Laremy Tunsil missed his third straight day of practice. On the injury report, Tunsil has been listed as having an illness, and great clarification has been made by the team that it is not COVID-19 related.

Nonetheless, the Texans’ Pro Bowl left tackle has been under the weather as the club gears up to face a 4-5 New England Patriots team that has won its past two games, including a 23-17 win over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday Night Football.

The Texans have kept Roderick Johnson active as their swing tackle. If Tunsil is not able to go against the Patriots, it is possible they start Johnson and activate rookie Charlie Heck.
