Giants fall to Vikings: Winners, losers and those in between

The New York Giants fell to the Vikings, 27-24, in Week 16 and here’s a look at our winners and losers (and those in between) from the game.

The New York Giants came into their Week 16 game against the Minnesota Vikings seeking a win and a possible playoff berth.

A high-scoring game was expected with the over/under hovering around 48 at kickoff. That number was eclipsed but not until the final seconds when Minnesota kicker Greg Joseph nailed a 61-yard field goal — a franchise record.

The final: Vikings 27, Giants 24. The playoffs will have to wait for Big Blue.

Here are some winners, losers, and in-betweens from the loss.

Giants signing Landon Collins to 53-man roster

The New York Giants are signing safety/linebacker Landon Collins from their practice squad to the 53-man roster.

After an impressive Week 15 performance against the Washington Commanders, the New York Giants are signing safety Landon Collins from their practice squad to the 53-man roster.

The move comes after linebacker Tae Crowder was waived and later re-signed to the reserve unit.

Although Collins took just 27 defensive snaps last Sunday night, he recorded three tackles. Two of those were key third-down stops.

“I think so,” defensive coordinator Wink Martindale said when asked if Collins can take on a larger role. “I think he had one misread out there, which is kind of expected a little bit because it’s been so long since he’s played. But I thought he did a nice job, and excited to see where he goes moving forward.”

Martindale added that he’s “very comfortable” with Collins playing inside linebacker.

The Giants have struggled against the run for much of the season with their inside backers being the primary culprits. Collins, who is stout against the run and a solid tackler, will most certainly help in that area.

Collins will join fellow safety/linebacker Tony Jefferson and rookie Micah McFadden at the position in Week 16 and likely beyond.

Report: Giants to re-sign LB Tae Crowder to practice squad

The New York Giants are expected to re-sign LB Tae Crowder, who was waived on Tuesday, to their practice squad.

The New York Giants waived linebacker Tae Crowder on Tuesday, two weeks after he tweeted, “free me.” He later apologized to his teammates and coaches for the tweet.

“I think that it was one of those things where it just didn’t work out with the expectation of execution and things just kept building up and building up. And you want to give a guy time to correct it, and we just didn’t have the time for him to correct it,” defensive coordinator Wink Martindale said of Crowder.

Crowder cleared waivers without a claim on Wednesday, making him an unrestricted free agent. And it didn’t take him long to find a home — a familiar one at that.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that Crowder will re-sign with the Giants, joining their practice squad.

It is expected that the Giants will sign safety Landon Collins from the reserve unit to their active roster, effectively swapping the two. Collins had paired with fellow safety Tony Jefferson to handle inside linebacker duties against the Washington Commanders in Week 15.

It’s a bit of a fall for the former Mr. Irrelevant, but perhaps some time on the practice squad will allow for the opportunity to correct his execution issues.

Giants waive Tae Crowder two weeks after ‘free me’ tweet

Two weeks after he tweeted “free me,” the New York Giants have waived linebacker Tae Crowder, the former Mr. Irrelevant.

Tae Crowder is officially a free man.

Two weeks after Crowder, who was upset with his playing time, tweeted, ‘free me,” the New York Giants have obliged.

The Giants announced on Tuesday that Crowder has been waived. The former Mr. Irrelevant was a healthy scratch in Week 15 against the Washington Commanders, replaced by a duo of Tony Jefferson and Landon Collins.

In 41 career games (31 starts) for the Giants, Crowder recorded 232 tackles (124 solo, nine for a loss), six QB hits, 2.0 sacks, eight passes defensed, and two interceptions.

The Giants’ interior linebackers have not played especially well this season, including Jaylon Smith and rookie Micah McFadden, which has opened the door for both Jefferson and Collins.

The safeties played well in that role on Sunday and expectations are that Collins will be signed from the practice squad to the active roster.

Crowder, meanwhile, is subject to the waiver system. If he clears, he will become an unrestricted free agent who is able to sign with any team.

Stock up, down after Giants’ 20-12 win over Commanders

Whose stock is up and whose is down following the New York Giants’ win over the Washington Commanders in Week 15?

The New York Giants withstood a furious late rally by the Washington Commanders on Sunday, ultimately heading home with an impressive 20-12 victory.

The win improves the Giants’ record to 8-5-1 on the season, guarantees they finish at .500 or better, and positions them well for a playoff berth.

Whose stock is up and whose is down after the Week 15 win? Let’s take a look.

Giants-Commanders Week 15: Offense, defense and special teams snap counts

The New York Giants won their Week 15 game against the Commanders. Here are the snap counts on offense, defense and special teams.

The New York Giants held on to upset the Washington Commanders, 20-12, in what was a classic NFC East game on Sunday night.

The win guaranteed the Giants a finish of .500 or better and significantly improved their playoff odds. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the loss for Washington all but ended their playoff dreams despite still hanging onto that final spot entering Week 16.

There’s a lot to break down and a lot to go over but before we look ahead, let’s look back. Here are the snap counts that contributed to the Giants’ latest win.

Offensive snaps: 63
Defensive snaps: 63
Special teams snaps: 26

Safety Landon Collins took just 27 defensive snaps, but they were impactful. He played well against his former team and accounted for at least two big stops on third down.

Wide receiver Kenny Golladay saw only a single snap on Sunday and it appeared as if Daniel Jones was going to look his way down the field. But DJ ultimately tucked it in and the $72 million man headed back to the sidelines.

Guard Ben Bredeson also worked his way back into things after being activated off of IR, taking the larger share of split snaps with Nick Gates.

Giants defeat Commanders: Winners, losers and those in between

The New York Giants beat the Commanders, 20-12, in Week 15 and here’s a look at our winners and losers (and those in between) from the game.

On one of the wildest NFL Sundays in recent memory, the New York Giants and Washington Commanders capped things off with a thrilling, down-to-the-wire, playoff-style game.

The Giants won, 20-12. It was their first victory since defeating Houston in Week 10.

Here are some winners, losers, and in-betweens from Week 15.

With playoff lives on the line, Giants survive late Commanders rally

The New York Giants withstood a late Washington Commanders rally in Week 15 and kept their playoff hopes very much alive.

The New York Giants and Washington Commanders entered a Week 15 game fully aware of its significance. Even if they downplayed it throughout the week, both teams recognized that it was a playoff-like situation.

And it played out accordingly.

Like an old-school NFC East game, the two teams left it all on the line. There were big hits, big plays, and big stops. And in fitting fashion, it came all the way down to the end.

Ultimately, the Giants held strong against a furious Commanders rally late in the fourth quarter. They stopped Washington on four downs inside the 10-yard line with just seconds remaining.

With the win, the Giants improve to 8-5-1 on the year and secure their first .500 or better season since 2016. Their playoff odds also improve to above 80%.

Giants activate LB/S Landon Collins to play against the Commanders

The Giants activated Landon Collins from the practice squad in time to play the Commanders.

The Washington Commanders will welcome an old friend back to FedEx Field Sunday night. The New York Giants activated Landon “don’t call me a linebacker” Collins from the practice squad for the huge NFC East battle.

Collins, who spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Giants, signed a then-record a six-year, $84 million contract with Washington in March 2019.

Collins would spend the next three seasons with Washington and was released in the offseason in a salary-cap move. Collins played in 35 games for Washington, registering 239 tackles, six sacks and three interceptions.

After struggling at safety, Washington moved Collins closer to the line of scrimmage last season, where he thrived before finishing the year on injured reserve. Collins initially bristled at the move but later embraced the change.

It’s Collins’ third activation from the practice squad this season. He has appeared in two games [Weeks 7 & 8].

Giants activate Ben Bredeson, elevate Landon Collins

The New York Giants have activated OL Ben Bredeson from IR and elevated safety Landon Collins from the practice squad in a series of moves.

The New York Giants activated guard Ben Bredeson (knee) off injured reserve ahead of a Sunday night matchup with the Washington Commanders.

Bredeson had started the first seven games of the season at left guard before suffering his injury in Week 7 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. It’s expected that Bredeson will resume his role as the starter.

In a corresponding roster move, the Giants placed rookie guard Joshua Ezeudu on IR with a neck injury. He had last played in Week 11 against the Detroit Lions.

Additionally, the Giants also elevated linebacker/safety Landon Collins and quarterback Davis Webb from the practice squad.

For Collins, this is his third elevation. He also played in Weeks 7 and 8, recording one tackle. If the Giants wish to use him again, he must be signed to the 53-man roster.

Prior to joining the Giants earlier this year, Collins spent the previous three seasons with Washington.

Meanwhile, Webb has been elevated for the first time this season. The Giants say that decision has nothing to do with the health or status of quarterbacks Daniel Jones, who is expected to start, and Tyrod Taylor.
