Panthers work out 4 players on Tuesday

The Panthers worked out four cornerbacks on Tuesday—and one of those players came away with a deal.

The Carolina Panthers had a clear agenda on Tuesday.

As noted by Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston yesterday afternoon, the team worked out four cornerbacks—Kyron Brown, A.J. Green (no, not that one), Azizi Hearn and Shemar Jean-Charles. The Panthers would later announce the signing of Hearn, who was added to the practice squad along with defensive lineman DeShawn Williams.

An Oceanside, Calif. native, Hearn began his collegiate career at the University of Arizona in 2017. He’d go on to play in 12 games for the Wildcats during the 2018 campaign—recording 26 combined tackles and one pass defensed.

The 6-foot-1, 204-pounder would later transfer to the University of Wyoming for the 2019, 2020 and 2021 campaigns, and then to UCLA for 2022. He appeared in 45 contests over those four years.

Hearn proceeded to hit the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2023. After he was released at the end of the summer, he signed on to the New England Patriots’ practice squad for the season.

Bills sign 13 players to reserve/future contracts

The Buffalo Bills had inked 11 players to reserve/future contracts earlier this week. Then on Tuesday, two more were added to the bunch.

A reserve/future contract guarantees that a player cannot be signed by another team. The deal goes into effect once the new league year begins and will count towards the next season’s salary cap and 90-man roster for the offseason and training camp.

Of the 13, 11 were on the team’s practice squad during the 2023 season. Two of them, wide receiver KJ Hamler and safety Kendall Williamson, were not.

The Buffalo Bills exchanged one cornerback for another.

The team announced on Friday that Cameron Dantzler was waived with an injury designation. In a corresponding move, Kyron Brown was signed.

Dantzler, 24, signed in Buffalo on June 7. It’s unclear his exact injury but he was not practicing on Thursday, according to multiple reports.

Brown, 27, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent following the 2019 NFL draft with the New York Jets. He has mostly featured on the practice squad in his career. Along with the Jets, Brown has spent time on the Dallas Cowboys (2021) and Tennessee Titans (2022) practice squads.

In total, Brown has appeared in four games in his career.

With the three-way battle the Bills have going on at the starting cornerback position between Kaiir Elam, Dane Jackson and Christian Benford, it will be an uphill climb for Brown to make Buffalo’s final roster.

Titans part ways with 3 practice squad players

The Titans parted ways with three of their practice squad players on Tuesday.

The Tennessee Titans were busy making moves on Tuesday, with the team announcing the signing of 11 players to futures contracts that will put them on the 90-man roster this offseason.

In addition to those 11 signings, all of whom were on the final version of the team’s practice squad this season, the Titans parted ways with three other members of their final practice squad.

Per the league’s transactions wire, the team cut defensive back Kyron Brown, quarterback Kevin Hogan, and offensive lineman Danny Isidora.

While all three spent time on the team’s practice squad, none of the three were elevated on gameday this season.

There are still two more practice squad players unaccounted for in 2021 fourth-round pick and wide receiver, Dez Fitzpatrick, and defensive back Nate Meadors.

Fitzpatrick is obviously the notable name there, and it looks like he isn’t coming back to Nashville for the moment, which wouldn’t be a surprise.

Cowboys make 5 cuts, including spring FA signing, to get down to 85 players

The Cowboys had until Tuesday afternoon to trim down their roster by five players.

They apparently made up their minds early.

The club has already informed the five cuts of their fate, according to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News.

Cornerback Kyron Brown, fullback Ryan Nall, tight end Ian Bunting, undrafted rookie wide receiver Ty Fryfogle, and defensive tackle Austin Faoliu will reportedly be cleaning out their lockers.

Only Faoliu was waived outright. Brown, Nall, Bunting, and Fryfogle are being let go, though, with injury designations. If they go unclaimed by another team, they will revert to injured reserve.

The Cowboys technically stand at 86 total players, as offensive lineman Isaac Alarcón does not count toward the official roster due to his international exemption.

The team must get down to 81 players by Aug. 23.

Roster Moves: Cowboys release 3 players, move 2 to injured list

Entering the second full week of preseason football, all NFL teams have to move their active roster from 90 players down to 85. In Dallas, a multitude of players were performing well in both training camp and preseason playing time, earning a chance to compete for a spot on the 53-man roster come August 31.

On Tuesday, the Cowboys announced the five moves, with three players being released and a pair moving to the injured reserve so Dallas can keep a hold of them.

Reggie Robinson and Sewo Olonilua will stay in the house with the Cowboys using the injured reserve as a way to hold onto them this season and potentially give them a spot on the roster in 2022. Robinson has been a project in Dallas since being drafted last year in the fourth round and the staff hopes he can become a serviceable player before his rookie deal is up. Olonilua spent time on the active roster last year but only played on special teams.

After this move, Dallas continues to trim down their roster with some surprises making it past the first cut. The next roster cut comes on August 24, where the Cowboys will have to cut another five players who are currently on the active roster.

Several Cowboys players aren’t waiting around to make moves. Tight end Dalton Schultz may be pressing to keep the starting job as Blake Jarwin continues to work his way back from an ACL injury, and Randy Gregory appears to be putting on a clinic at defensive end, prompting a former player and coach to predict an All-Pro campaign for the veteran still on the comeback trail. Maurice Canady is finally getting his Cowboys career started after opting out of 2020, Ben DiNucci is gunning for the primary backup quarterback job, Connor Williams is taking snaps at center, and a new cornerback has been welcomed into the fold.

Cowboys add cornerback depth, still have ‘interest’ in Malik Hooker

Kyron Brown played in three games in 2019 for the Jets, but spent 2020 on the PUP list; his signing does not preclude adding another safety.

The Cowboys have added pass coverage depth with the Sunday signing of a defensive back from the AFC…. but it’s not the one most were expecting.

Dallas is signing cornerback Kyron Brown to a two-year deal, as first reported by ESPN insider Adam Schefter. Brown came into the league in 2019 as an undrafted free agent out of Akron. He spent two years in the New York Jets’ organization, but was released in May.

The Cowboys had an apparently-successful visit last week with free agent safety Malik Hooker, most recently of the Indianapolis Colts. It was Hooker’s second meeting with the club; the signing of Brown does not preclude the team coming to terms with Hooker as well, although it would necessitate someone else getting cut to make room on the roster.

“There’s definitely interest,” Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said of Hooker, as per the team website. “I think he gives us another excellent football player. We just feel he’d be a really good fit for us.”

The 6-foot-1-inch Brown saw action in three games for the Jets in 2019. After appearing in two contests on special teams, he got his first start versus Miami in December of that year, recording five tackles before leaving the game with a quad injury. He was placed on injured reserve the next day and then spent all of 2020 on the PUP list.

Jets’ Kyron Brown, Jalin Moore clear waivers, placed on PUP list

The Jets have placed Kyron Brown and Jalin Moore on the PUP list after clearing waivers.

Two more Jets are out for the season before it even begins.

According to the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson, both Kyron Brown (quadriceps) and Jalin Moore (ankle) cleared waivers and landed on the Jets’ physically unable to perform-reserve list, thus ending their seasons.

Brown was signed by the Jets as an undrafted free agent out of Akron last May. He made the Jets practice squad after being initially cut by the team at the end of training camp. Brown was promoted to the active roster in November and made his debut against the Redskins. His first career start came against the Dolphins in December, in which he recorded five tackles. Brown was placed on injured reserve after that game.

As for Moore, he spent the entire 2019 season on the NFI list with an ankle injury. He originally went undrafted out of Appalachian State in 2019 before signing with the Jets.
