WATCH: Kyle Young talks coming back to Ohio State, new guys on roster

Ohio State forward Kyle Young surprised us by returning to the Buckeyes next year. Watch him discuss that and other things with Andy Katz.

Count me in the camp that was surprised when we got the news that Ohio State forward Kyle Young was going to be spending one more season in scarlet and gray. I mean, not that it doesn’t make sense and all with the way things ended with the injury and the Buckeyes bowing out to No. 15 seed Oral Roberts in round one of the NCAA Tournament, but it just felt like he was moving on.

But also count me in the camp that is pretty excited about him being on the roster next season. He fills that need of leadership, experience, and an evolving offensive game that will be key in the Big Ten next year.

Young sat down with the Big Ten Network’s Andy Katz to discuss some of what next year holds for him, why he made his decision, and what it’ll be like to be on the same team with guys that transferred in from other Big Ten rival schools.

If you missed any of the interview, you can catch it in the below tweet shared by the Big Ten Network on Twitter.

We can’t stress what an underrated return this is for Ohio State. To get such a quality basketball player and person back for another run might just be what puts OSU over the top against its other competitors.

If you are like me, you were a little staggered by the decision of Ohio State hoops forward Kyle Young to come back to the Buckeyes for one more season. Not that it isn’t a good thing, because it clearly is, but I thought for all the world that he was going to move on to life after basketball after going through senior day, enduring multiple injuries, and more.

But, it’s exciting to know that Ohio State will have its heart and soul leader out there for one more season to do all the hard work in and around the paint like rebounding, tough defense, and more. Kick in the fact that he started to show as an emerging offensive threat, and it’s almost better than getting a four or five-star freshman to come into the program (OSU has one of those too).

If you are interested in knowing what went into Young’s decision, he met with the media via Zoom call on Friday to provide the rationale he went through in deciding to be a Buckeye for one more season. And, if you missed any of his comments, we have them thanks to the Twitter account of the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Simply click on the below video Tweet, head on over to OhioStateBuckeyes.com, and have a listen. It’s an interesting little interview.

Again, we can’t reiterate how important this is to the team for the 2021-2022 season. It should be a fun one.

Projecting the Ohio State basketball starting lineup, key players for next season 2.0

After more moves and news, we’re taking a second stab at projecting Ohio State basketball’s starting lineup, key players for next season.

As soon as the season ended, we went through an exercise of projecting what Ohio State basketball’s starting lineup and key contributors could look like for the 2021-2022 season. Since then, there have been some changes. Musa Jallow transferred out of the program, the Buckeyes brought in Penn State transfer guard Jabari Wheeler and Indiana transfer Joey Brunk, and Kyle Young surprised everyone by deciding to come back for one more season.

Add all of that to both E.J. Liddell and Duane Washington testing the NBA waters, and it has thrown the whole thing upside down. We still have to wait on Liddell and Washington’s decision, but we’re going to assume they come back (which is not a given but probable). With all of that in mind, here is our second effort at projecting what the five starters for most of next hoops season at Ohio State could look like, with a run through the rest of the key contributors.

We reserve the right to change this and be wrong, because — well, college basketball.

Next … The projected starting lineup

Kyle Young coming back for one more year

Ohio State forward Kyle Young took to Twitter Friday to announce that he will be coming back to play for the Buckeyes one more season.

Count me in the camp that is very excited about this news.

Ohio State forward Kyle Young announced today that he will be taking advantage of the extra year the NCAA is allowing because of the COVID-19 pandemic and coming back to play for the Buckeyes next year,

It can only be seen as a very positive development for Ohio State. Young is like a coach on the floor, does all of the little things needed to help win ballgames, and has seen his offensive game blossom as well. He was a senior last year, and it was assumed that his career on the banks of the Olentangy was over. Young even participated in senior day festivities when OSU played its last home game.

But now, one of the most important pieces on the Ohio State roster will still be in place and become a central piece to what head coach Chris Holtmann and staff build around for the 2021-2022 season.

Young has been saddled with injury issues during his career, so much so that he wasn’t able to finish up with his team in the Big Ten Tournament and NCAAs. You have to think that played into his decision to give it one more run.

When we have an official statement from either Young or head coach Chris Holtmann, we’ll bring that to you, but for now, this is a very, very underrated positive development for next year’s squad if that’s possible.

Kyle Young out for first round game of NCAA Tournament

According to reports, Ohio State forward Kyle Young will miss the first-round NCAA Tournament game against Oral Roberts.

It looks like the Ohio State basketball team will be without senior forward Kyle Young for the first-round NCAA Tournament game against Oral Roberts on Friday.

Young has been dealing with a concussion and — we have to assume — going through the standard protocols that have become the norm before he will be able to return to action. He suffered a blow to the head from Illinois’ Kofi Cockburn in the season finale and has been out since.

The news was broken by Stadium’s Jeff Goodman.

It’s a big hit to not have one of the leaders and all-around effort guys in the lineup come tournament time. Young can score, but he does much more: rebounding, finding open guys, going after loose balls and other things that don’t often show up in the scorebook.

With him out, you’ll most likely see what we have during the latest stretch. Expect more time for Zed Key, but also forward Seth Towns. Head coach Chris Holtmann has already mentioned issues defensively with both E.J. Liddell and Key in the game at the same time.

Ohio State and Oral Roberts are set to tip off at 3 p.m. EDT.

Ohio State rides Kyle Young to big halftime lead over Purdue in a Big Ten quarterfinal

Ohio State forward Kyle Young has a career-high 18 points at halftime, the same deficit the Buckeyes lead Purdue at the break in Indy.

Ohio State forward Kyle Young is having the game of his college career — literally — and there’s only been one half of play. He has led the way to a 49-31 halftime advantage for the Buckeyes. The OSU senior has been guarded by bigger guys that haven’t gone with him on the perimeter, and he’s made the Boilermakers pay. He is 7-of-9 from the floor and 4-for-4 from beyond the arc for a career-high 18 points through the first twenty minutes.

Young isn’t the only one having a big half. Duane Washington has also benefitted from Young’s hot shooting, getting less attention than normal. He’s also splashed in some buckets and is in double figures with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range. The result has been an offensive explosion against a Purdue team that is generally hard to score against.

It hasn’t just been offense for Ohio State. It has played outstanding defense, holding Purdue to just 39.3% from the floor. It’s been a scrambling, physical effort in the post that has held Boilermaker big man Trevion Williams to just four points on 2-of-7 shooting.

Ohio State is also winning the turnover and rebounding battle. It’s been a clinic so far for the Buckeyes, but games are never one in just one half of play. You can bank on Purdue coming out with a lot of emotion in the second half, so the Buckeyes will need to stay just as sharp and aggressive.

We’re also guessing someone will start guarding Kyle Young.

Ohio State forward Kyle Young game time decision vs. Iowa

According to insider Jon Rothstein, Ohio State forward Kyle Young will be a game-time decision for the basketball game against Iowa.

Ohio State has another huge matchup on deck when it hosts the top ten Iowa Hawkeyes Sunday. The Buckeyes have lost two straight games and its status as a No. 1 seed is fleeting. There’s still the opportunity there with games against Iowa and Illinois, and then the Big Ten tournament, but OSU needs to get back on the winning track.

One of the reasons OSU lost to Michigan State Thursday had to do with forward Kyle Young being out because of concussion protocol. What he means for this team doesn’t always show up in the box score, but there was a noticeable difference in how disjointed Ohio State looked in East Lansing.

Inquiring minds of Buckeye fans then want to know if Young will be back for the game against the Hawkeyes, and it appears as though there is at least a chance. According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, head coach Chris Holtmann has informed him that Young is a game-time decision.

It must be noted that Iowa will be without key bench player Jack Nunge due to a season-ending knee injury as well.  Here’s to hoping that Young can go, and if not, that OSU can find a way to get the job done at home.

Ohio State F Kyle Young out vs. Michigan State on Thursday

Kyle Young has started 22 of the Buckeyes’ 23 games this season and is averaging 8.7 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.

Ohio State will be without one of their key big men on Thursday when they travel to the Breslin Center.

Buckeyes head coach Chris Holtmann announced on Wednesday that senior forward Kyle Young will miss the match-up against Michigan State on Thursday after suffering a concussion this past weekend against Michigan.

Young has started 22 of the Buckeyes’ 23 games this season and is averaging 8.7 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Young had six points and seven rebounds in Ohio State’s 79-62 victory over Michigan State earlier this season.

Obviously you never root for injuries, but the Buckeyes losing Young for this match-up does bode well for the Spartans. With Young out, Ohio State will be expected to go with more of a smaller lineup — which is what Michigan State has been primarily rolling with in their past two victories. The Buckeyes will still have plenty of other weapons but losing Young will definitely affect this game.

Michigan State vs. Ohio State is scheduled to tip off at 9 p.m. ET on Thursday and can be seen on ESPN.

WATCH: Kyle Young flies out of nowhere for the put back bucket and foul vs. Penn State

Ohio State forward Kyle Young had the highlight of the night early in the game against Penn State with a flying put-back three-point play.

Ohio State is in action against Penn State on the hardwood tonight in a makeup affair from a game that got postponed from January 6. The Buckeyes are off to a good start, and it didn’t take long to get what will probably be the best highlight of the night on film.

You know forward Kyle Young from his tough nose defense, opportunistic play in the post, and all-around floor game. What we don’t often see from him is plays like the one we witnessed early on in this one.

With OSU already up 5-0, guard Duane Washington fired up a contested three that missed the mark. The ball caromed off the rim and we saw Young fly from seemingly off the screen to the rim where he got both hands on the ball, put it back, all while absorbing contact from the Penn State defender for an old-fashioned three-point play.

In case you missed it, here is the spectacular highlight in all of its glory.

Well done. I always worry about a guy landing like this, especially Young who has had to battle through some lower-body injuries already in his career. Pretty remarkable though and Young seemed to be just fine afterward.
