Is Kyle Van Noy the Ravens defensive MVP so far?

To say that the 33-year-old Kyle Van Noy is rejuvenated right now is an understatement

To say that 33-year-old Kyle Van Noy is rejuvenated right now is an understatement. He’s actually playing better now, in his mid-30s, than he ever has.

Van Noy has six sacks through the first four games of this season, bringing him to 15 throughout his 18-game stint with Baltimore.

Entering the 2024 season, opposing offensive coordinators knew who the biggest playmakers would be on the Ravens’ defense. They had their short lists of players you had to game plan against.

None of them likely had KVN anywhere near the top of their lists. But here you have the 11-year veteran, on his fifth team, remaking himself. One of the most underrated signings in Ravens history, we’ve seen him evolve from a drop coverage-focused linebacker to a pass-rushing specialist.

Baltimore should do what it takes to make sure he closes out his career there.

Ravens put the entire NFL on notice with dominant 35-10 win over Bills in Week 4

Baltimore Ravens put the entire NFL on notice with dominant 35-10 win over the Buffalo Bills in Week 4

The Ravens were a 0-2 team searching for an identity and were heading to Dallas for a must-win matchup against the Cowboys.

After holding on to defeat Dallas, Baltimore took another big step and put the entire league on notice with a dominant 35-10 win over the Buffalo Bills at M&T Bank Stadium on Sunday night in front of a raucous crowd.

Josh Allen was 16-29 passing for 180 yards but was sacked three times on the night and finished with a 73.9 rating before exiting midway through the fourth quarter as Baltimore had a 25-point lead.

For the Ravens, it was all about the running backs as Derrick Henry logged 24 carries for 199 yards (8.3 avg) and one rushing touchdown.  Henry also had a receiving touchdown.  His running mate, Justice Hill, had six catches for 78 yards and a receiving touchdown.

Overall, Baltimore allowed 237 yards on 57 offensive plays and held the Bills to 3-13 on third downs.

Ravens DC Zach Orr deserves credit for the success of LB Kyle Van Noy

Baltimore Ravens LB Kyle Van Noy has become a prolific pass rusher and current team DC Zach Orr deserves credit.

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Kyle Van Noy has become a prolific pass rusher, and current team defensive coordinator Zach Orr deserves credit.

With the loss of former defensive coordinator Mike MacDonald and a plethora of talent up front, Orr has had a huge act to follow after a historic 60-sack season in 2023. Well, the retention of Van Noy has been vital in 2024.

Van Noy is a linebacker by definition, meaning he’s spent countless hours studying film and taking directives under Orr, who worked as the linebacker coach before being promoted. Van Noy’s upper body strength and speed create trouble for slow-footed offensive tackles, and within Orr’s blitz scheme, Van Noy’s downhill power is nearly implacable.

Over three weeks, Van Noy has already yielded four of the Ravens’ total nine sacks and will continue to be effective as his team seeks to regain ground in the AFC North.

Lamar Jackson and Kyle Van Noy both joked about how Dak Prescott got away with an obvious safety

Lamar Jackson and the Ravens think the refs gave Dak Prescott special treatment here.

Usually, NFL officiating in any one game can be so poorly called that both teams have a legitimate laundry list of gripes to complain about. But sometimes, one call is so egregious, so lopsided against one team, that it’s hard not to wonder what the referees on hand were looking at.

That’s exactly what happened during a bizarre sequence on Sunday when the Dallas Cowboys were backed up against their own goal line in a battle with the Baltimore Ravens.

With Dallas facing a third-and-long, Baltimore star defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike pressured Prescott and appeared to secure a safety by bringing the quarterback down in the end zone. There was one glaring problem, though. While being brought to the turf, Prescott shoveled off a pass to Dallas left guard Tyler Smith to clearly try and avoid a safety.

Uh, yeah, you can’t do that.

But rather than cite Prescott for intentional grounding and give the Ravens the two points they earned, the referees instead prioritized calling Smith for illegal touching as an offensive lineman, which, yes, still penalized the Cowboys, but it saved them from disaster:

After the game, Ravens veteran linebacker Kyle Van Noy took to his Twitter account to question the logic behind how this sequence was officiated. Van Noy jokingly claimed he didn’t know that illegal touching by a lineman could nullify a safety in pro football. He was right to question the process:

On Monday, reigning MVP Lamar Jackson caught wind of Van Noy’s assessment and piled on the controversy. Jackson joked that the referees would’ve almost certainly penalized him for intentional grounding and given the Cowboys a safety if the situation had been reversed.

You know, given Dallas’ status as a marquee NFL team seemingly appearing on national television every week, Jackson probably isn’t wrong:

Oh, well. All’s well that ends well. At least this strange non-safety sequence didn’t come back to bite the Ravens, who managed to hang on for their first win of the 2024 season. Nonetheless, it’s still worth wondering about how the officials screwed this play up so badly that multiple players are complaining about it in public.

These kinds of plays and calls — where popular/famous teams are involved, no less — are never a great look for the NFL.

Nate Wiggins, Ronnie Stanley among 5 key Ravens to return to practice ahead of Week 3

The Ravens need a win badly on Sunday against the Cowboys and received some good news on the injury front.

Baltimore had five players not practice on Wednesday, which was reversed on Thursday, as all five took the practice field in some capacity.

Wiggins missed the Week 2 loss to the Raiders with a neck injury and was wearing a non-contact red jersey at the onset of practice. Ronnie Stanley suffered an ankle injury last Sunday but only missed one day before returning.

Ravens vs. Raiders: Top photos from Week 2 matchup at M&T Bank Stadium

The Ravens have gone from a Super Bowl hopeful, to a team searching for answers after a shocking 26-23 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders at M&T Bank Stadium on Sunday.

The loss dropped Baltimore to 0-2 on the season, while creating more discourse centered on the offensive line, secondary, run-pass ratios, and Lamar Jackson. The disappointing loss also creates something of a hotseat for head coach John Harbaugh with a difficult matchup against the Cowboys looming.

Here are the top photos from Week 2.

Chiefs Rick Burkholder responds to Kyle Van Noy’s frustration rant after Week 1 injury

The incident regarding Baltimore Ravens linebacker Kyle Van Noy and the Kansas City Chiefs training staff has gained much attention over the last few days with accusations of inappropriate treatment.

Chiefs V.P. of Sports Medicine and Performance Rick Burkholder spoke with reporters on Friday about the comments made by Van Noy on his podcast earlier in the week.

“We respect the Ravens; we respect our medical staff. I respect Kyle as a player, and I’m pretty upset that he was upset. I’ve talked at length with their doctors and then actually exchanged text messages with John Harbaugh to clear the air.” said Burkholder. “Just a couple of points. One is that it’s not mandated in the NFL to have an ophthalmologist or dentist on the stands. We do that as a courtesy to both teams. So, it’s not mandated by the NFL or the NFLPA. The second thing is, when he went down, I went out there because I thought he had a head or neck injury, and I waited for them.”

Burkholder believes he and the rest of the Kansas City staff treated Van Noy’s injury appropriately and with the best intentions.

“I asked their physician whether they needed an Ophthalmologist. They didn’t at the time they evaluated him, and then when they wanted an Ophthalmologist, we made the phone call into the stands and got the Ophthalmologist out of the locker room in 12 minutes,” said Burkholder. “So there was a 12-minute time frame when we were alerted to him. I’m sorry that he was upset, and I think we’ve worked it out with the Ravens through coach and I. Both organizations respect the process.”

The situation does spotlight everything the medical staff does with players moving forward, as the veteran linebacker’s comments caught the attention of many around the league.

Ravens LB blasts Chiefs’ training staff after sustaining injury in Week 1 loss

#Ravens LB Kyle Van Noy blasted the #Chiefs’ training staff after receiving less-than-adequate care in Baltimore’s Week 1 loss at Arrowhead.

The Baltimore Ravens lost their Week 1 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs last week, and while the game may be over, linebacker Kyle Van Noy had something to say about his treatment at Arrowhead Stadium during a recent interview.

Van Noy suffered a fractured orbital in the game and will be out of action for an undetermined amount of time as a result. After sustaining the injury last Thursday, Van Noy said that the Chiefs’ training staff didn’t immediately attend to him in the locker room and that he had to wait for an entire quarter to be evaluated.

Kansas City’s training staff earned a poor grade in the NFLPA’s 2024 team report card, and certainly won’t get a boost from Van Noy’s comments.

Though the Chiefs haven’t issued a statement about Van Noy’s interview at the time of writing, fans should stay tuned to see if they offer any kind of response to the allegations about the linebacker’s care.
