Ex-Broncos backup QB named starter for UFL’s Houston Roughnecks

Remember Jarrett Guarantano? He had a brief stint with the Broncos in 2022. He’s now set to start in the UFL this spring.

A former Denver Broncos (backup) quarterback has been named a starter in the United Football League (a new spring league formed by the merger of the XFL and USFL).

The Houston Roughnecks will start Jarrett Guarantano in their season opener next weekend, coach Curtis Johnson announced Wednesday.

Guarantano, 26, played college football at Tennessee and Washington State before entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Arizona Cardinals in 2022. After the Cardinals released Guarantano from their practice squad midway through his rookie season, he tried out for Denver. Two weeks later, the Broncos signed Guarantano to their practice squad.

He was elevated to the game-day roster in Week 15 to serve as a backup behind Brett Rypien (Russell Wilson was out with a concussion). Guarantano was fully promoted to the 53-man roster the next week. Denver cut the QB last summer and he signed with the UFL last December.

Guarantano isn’t the only QB who had a cup of coffee with the Broncos set to play in the UFL this spring.

Case Cookus, who lasted three days in Denver during the 2021 offseason, has had quite a journeyman career. After his brief stint with the Broncos, Cookus went on to spend time with three NFL teams, one CFL team and one USFL team. He is now set to play for the Memphis Showboats in 2024.

Two other ex-Denver quarterbacks — Paxton Lynch and Kyle Sloter — were backups in the XFL last spring but are now free agents.

Also of note: former Broncos coach and defensive coordinator Wade Phillips will serve as the head coach of the UFL’s San Antonio Brahmas.

Kyle Sloter breaks down film of Broncos QB Russell Wilson

Kyle Sloter (yes, that Kyle Sloter) broke down film of Broncos QB Russell Wilson in his latest YouTube video.

The Denver Broncos rode a five-game winning streak before losing to the Houston Texans 22-17 this past Sunday. While their record currently sits at 6-6, and in the hunt for a playoff birth, the Broncos’ offense may or may not be to blame for why results did not happen soon enough.

Kyle Sloter, who breaks down the play of NFL quarterbacks on his YouTube channel, makes a dive into that claim. Sloter looks into Wilson’s play on the field and Sean Payton’s offensive system.

While statistically, Wilson is doing well by coming in fifth in the NFL in passing touchdowns (21) and doing well with his completion percentage of 67.6 percent, Wilson isn’t necessarily taking the top off the defense. Maybe its the age of Wilson as a factor, maybe or Sean Payton’s offense is too complex. Or, the defense is catching up to the league’s offensive revolution.

Whatever the reasons may be, the former Broncos QB attempted to dive into the problem on his YouTube channel, breaking down film of Denver’s current QB. Check it out:

Kyle Sloter throws shade at former head coach Mike Zimmer

Preseason legend Kyle Sloter throws shade at his former Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer.

Every so often, someone throws out a question that generates a lot of discussion. ESPN’s NFL X account proposed the following question.

Former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kyle Sloter has his own fan page account that said him vs. former Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer was the greatest rivalry in NFL history. His quote tweet says it all about how he feels about his former head coach.

Sloter was known as a preseason legend around the Vikings fanbase and a player who many thought deserved a chance with the team. In the preseason finale of 2017, Sloter completed 15-23 passes for 222 yards and a touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals while with the Denver Broncos.

Over his two preseason with the Vikings, he never had a completion percentage less that 66% while throwing eight touchdowns and one interception.

He was waived after the 2019 preseason and had a brief stay with the team in 2021. It was a fun stay with the team and things ended the way they probably should have.

Former Vikings QB Kyle Sloter named Arlington Renegades starter

The preseason legend is set to start for the Arlington Renegades on Saturday

The XFL has had a fun start to the season and there have been multiple former Minnesota Vikings that are playing in the league. The one that everyone was excited to see was preseason legend quarterback Kyle Sloter.

On Thursday afternoon, Sloter was named the Arlington Renegades starting quarterback for week three.

The Renegades had started former Ball State quarterback Drew Plitt with mixed results in a 1-1 start. Plitt threw for 294 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in those games but showed a lot of struggles against the Houston Roughnecks.

Vikings fans can see him lead the Renegades against the Las Vegas Vipers on Saturday afternoon at 2 pm central time on ABC.

Tracking all former Lions now playing in the XFL

How many of the 19 ex-Lions do you remember?

The new season the XFL kicks off this weekend. Fans tuning into the spring football league will recognize many of the names, including several former Lions.

There are ex-Lions dotting the rosters of the eight XFL teams. Many were only in Detroit for a quick stop, be it a training camp or draft pick or practice squad stint. But they still earned recognition as Detroit Lions at some point.

Here are the players in the XFL with Lions ties.

8 former Vikings getting another shot in the XFL

The XFL returns on Saturday and there are multiple former Vikings that will be suiting up

One of the best parts of football in the 21st century is that it doesn’t end with the Super Bowl. The National Football League has done a such a great job making football a year-round thing that we now have two spring leagues.

The first one is the relaunch of the XFL which has their kickoff game on Saturday between the Las Vegas Vipers and Arlington Renegades — it’ll be broadcast nationally on ABC, beginning at 2 p.m. CT.

For Minnesota Vikings fans, they will have eight different Vikings that are playing in the XFL across five different teams. Here is the full list:

Kyle Sloter among 27 ex-Broncos selected in XFL draft

Kyle Sloter is back for more spring football. He’s one of eight ex-Broncos joining the Arlington Renegades in the XFL.

Arlington Renegades coach Bob Stoops apparently likes what he’s seen from the Denver Broncos’ scouting department in recent years.

Stoops picked eight former Broncos in the XFL draft earlier this week, including fan-favorite quarterback Kyle Sloter and veteran safety Rahim Moore.

Before joining the XFL, Sloter starred in the USFL with the New Orleans Breakers last spring. He then went to training camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars but failed to make their 53-man roster.

Denver had 27 total former players selected in the XFL draft ahead of the league’s return to play in the spring. The XFL will have eight teams in 2023 with the league set to kick off on Feb. 18, just one week after the Super Bowl.

Given how many former Broncos they have, the Renegades might end up being a fan-favorite in Denver. Another team to watch is the Houston Roughnecks. Houston will be coached by Wade Phillips, who served as the Broncos’ defensive coordinator when they won Super Bowl 50.

The full list of ex-Denver players now set to play in the XFL can be seen below.

Vikings not ruling out bringing in another backup QB

The Vikings might not be done at quarterback.

When the initial depth chart was released on Wednesday, the backup quarterback position stood out right away.

Kellen Mond and Sean Mannion have both been listed as the backup quarterbacks going into Sunday’s preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Unfortunately, neither player has had a good camp. Mannion has performed exactly as you would have expected after his start last season against Green Bay. Mond, after struggling all of last year, has not shown much improvement during training camp thus far.

Where does this leave the Vikings? It could have them searching for a new backup quarterback. ESPN’s Kevin Seifert said as much on KFAN Thursday morning.

The timing feels right, as the new regime hasn’t had an opportunity to get a sense of these players. Now that they have, this isn’t much of a surprise.

Who could they target? Outside of Jimmy Garoppolo and Sam Darnold, both of whom are firmly on the trade block, there aren’t many likely options via trade.

There are a few names on the free agent market that could be enticing, including Cam Newton, Mike Glennon, AJ McCarron, Garrett Gilbert and Kyle Sloter.

If Mond and Mannion both struggle to make a case, don’t be surprised if the team adds another veteran.

Former Vikings QB Kyle Sloter released by Jaguars

Kyle Sloter’s time in Jacksonville is done.

After earning first-team All-USFL honors as a member of the New Orleans Breakers, former Vikings quarterback Kyle Sloter found a new home with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

This past Thursday, Sloter played with his new team in the Hall of Fame Game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Playing the entire second half, Sloter had some success, completing 13-of-25 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown in a 27-11 loss.

Unfortunately, that didn’t last long as the Jaguars moved on from the signal-caller on Tuesday afternoon in favor of the rookie quarterback from Brown, E.J. Perry.

With Sloter having been released from his seventh team in as many years, he is back on the market looking for his next opportunity.

WATCH: Former Vikings QB Kyle Sloter throws touchdown pass for Jaguars

Kyle Sloter made his return to the NFL in Thursday night’s Hall of Fame Game.

Former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kyle Sloter was on an NFL field on Thursday night throwing passes in a different uniform.

What else is new?

The 28-year-old journeyman, now a Jacksonville Jaguar, is playing on his seventh NFL team, following a one-and-done run with the New Orleans Breakers in the USFL.

There has been some anticipation for his return after leading the Breakers to the USFL South Division championship and receiving All-USFL honors. It was also his first game back since he made the comment back in June about there not being “80 or 90 quarterbacks in the world” better than he is right now.

In the Hall of Fame Game preseason opener, he went 13-of-25 passing for 127 yards. And he also threw the Jaguars’ one and only touchdown

Sloter is currently competing with C.J. Beathard and Jake Luton for the lead backup duties behind Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence. If anything, it’s a foot in the door for NFL stability.
