Former Villanova coach Jay Wright reacts to Sixers bringing back Kyle Lowry

Former Villanova coach Jay Wright reacts to the Philadelphia 76ers bringing back Kyle Lowry in free agency.

The Philadelphia 76ers were able to bring back Kyle Lowry on a 1-year deal after picking him up in February off the buyout market. The Sixers were in need of another ball-handler after Tyrese Maxey and rookie Jared McCain and Lowry fills that role.

In 23 games with the Sixers, 20 starts, Lowry averaged 8.0 points and 4.6 assists while shooting 40.4% from deep so he still has some game left. He will come off the bench with this new group in an effort to lead the bench unit.

Former Villanova coach Jay Wright, who coached Lowry while in college, took to Twitter to react to the Sixers bringing back the veteran. He tagged Maxey and Joel Embiid as well as he will likely play a role for them as well.

Lowry is a proven veteran who will play a role for this group off the bench and the Sixers will turn to him to be a claiming voice when things get a little rocky.

Tyrese Maxey shares satisfaction with Sixers bringing back Kyle Lowry

Tyrese Maxey shares his satisfaction of the Philadelphia 76ers bringing back Kyle Lowry in free agency.

The Philadelphia 76ers were able to bring back Kyle Lowry in free agency after agreeing to a 1-year deal with the veteran guard. The Sixers picked up Lowry off the buyout market in February and he played an important role as a veteran to Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid.

Lowry may be losing a step here and there, but he is an important piece on this roster. He knows coach Nick Nurse like the back of his hand and will be a great voice on the roster for young guards like Maxey and Jared McCain.

In fact, Maxey took to Instagram to share his satisfaction and approval of the Sixers bringing back Lowry.

Lowry averaged 8.0 points and 4.6 assists while shooting 40.4% from deep for the Sixers after being picked up. He will look to continue to make an impact for this team as they look to win their first title since 1983.

Kyle Lowry takes to Instagram to react to re-signing with Sixers

Kyle Lowry takes to Instagram to react to his re-signing with the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Philadelphia 76ers brought back a key veteran on Thursday when they agreed to a 1-year deal to have Kyle Lowry return to the Sixers. They picked up the veteran guard in the buyout market in February and he did a lot of good things for Philadelphia.

Along with helping Tyrese Maxey take steps forward as a lead guard, Lowry was also able to produce on the floor. He averaged 8.0 points and 4.6 assists while shooting 40.4% from deep in 23 games with 20 starts with the Sixers after starting the season with the Miami Heat.

The veteran took to Instagram to react to his re-signing with the Sixers. He also included a clip of the 2016 All-Star game when he assisted new addition Paul George on a 3-pointer.

Lowry should not only do wonders for Maxey taking another step forward, but should also help rookie Jared McCain. When looking at Lowry’s career, he has accomplished much in the league and has a lot of wisdom he can pass on to the youngsters.

Report: Sixers agree on 1-year deal to keep Kyle Lowry in Philadelphia

The Philadelphia 76ers have agreed to a 1-year deal to keep Kyle Lowry in the city of Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia 76ers are still in the process of filling out the roster in an effort to build the right roster around their Big 3 of Paul George, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey. They have brought in proven veterans and will now keep one of their own.

Kyle Lowry, who was picked up off the buyout market back in February, has agree to a 1-year deal to return to the Sixers. The Philadelphia native averaged 8.0 points and 4.6 assists while shooting 40.4% from deep in 23 games with 20 starts with the Sixers after starting the season with the Miami Heat. His veteran presence was able to help Maxey move forward in his development as a lead guard.

Lowry will look to keep things going in Philadelphia. He was a key cog in what they wanted to do and he still has some game left. He will be a very nice bench piece for this group as they move forward in the second season under coach Nick Nurse.

Could Knicks be legitimate threat to sign Kyle Lowry away from Sixers?

Could the New York Knicks be a team that could steal Kyle Lowry away from the Philadelphia 76ers?

The Philadelphia 76ers have a number of free agents that need to be taken care of when the time comes. Since the finals are done, the Sixers can now begin to negotiate with their own free agents ahead of the June 30 beginning of free agency.

The biggest example of this was the Indiana Pacers agreeing to a deal with Pascal Siakam to keep him in Indy following his acquisition midseason.

The Sixers are expected to keep guys like Kelly Oubre Jr., Nic Batum, and Kyle Lowry as those three play a big role in what Philadelphia wants to accomplish. However, there is a rival team that could steal Lowry from the Sixers.

Per The Athletic’s Fred Katz, the New York Knicks showed interest in acquiring Lowry after he was bought out by the Charlotte Hornets before the Sixers signed him:

Lowry was on the Knicks’ list after a buyout with the Charlotte Hornets last winter, according to league sources, though he eventually signed with the 76ers.

Lowry, a Philadelphia native, was helpful in the development of Tyrese Maxey and the other young guards on the roster. The Sixers have the cap space to acquire a big name while also taking care of their own free agents, but that doesn’t mean that a team like the Knicks could swoop in and bring him to The Big Apple. It will be very interesting to see how it all plays out.

With NBA Finals over, Sixers can begin negotiating with own free agents

With the finals over, the Philadelphia 76ers can now begin negotiating with their own free agents.

The 2023-24 season is in the books as the Boston Celtics took home the franchise’s 18th title following a Game 5 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Monday. The Celtics went 16-3 during their playoff run and, quite frankly, looked dominant.

The Philadelphia 76ers will now head back to the drawing board and try to take down the Celtics in the Eastern Conference. President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey has the team in a good position when considering the cap space he has come up with to try and acquire another max player.

With the finals now over, the Sixers can begin negotiating with their own free agents. Philadelphia has a handful of free agents to make decisions on such as Kelly Oubre Jr., Nic Batum, Kyle Lowry, and others.

Tyrese Maxey is also a free agent, but one has to assume that the Sixers will take care of him rather quickly as they view him as one of the building blocks of a championship team.

Lakers may go after Kyle Lowry in free agency

The Lakers are reportedly expected to go after Kyle Lowry, a 38-year-old six-time former All-Star guard.

While the Los Angeles Lakers have a solid backcourt with starters D’Angelo Russell and Austin Reaves, as well as reserves such as Gabe Vincent, Spencer Dinwiddie and Max Christie, it simply wasn’t good enough this season.

Russell and Reaves are seen as too weak defensively, and Russell has always been very inconsistent in the playoffs. Furthermore, none of the Lakers’ guards are particularly speedy in the open court.

On top of that, Russell can become a free agent this summer, while Dinwiddie and Christie will be free agents. The team has almost no wiggle room within the NBA’s increasingly suffocating salary cap, which would make re-signing them very difficult.

Therefore, reinforcements will be needed, and if the Lakers strike out on their big trade targets (or even if they land one of them), they may need to fill out their roster using the veteran’s minimum salary.

Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report believes they will make an offer to veteran point guard Kyle Lowry.

Via Bleacher Report:

“He’s probably better suited for a bench role, but Lowry is one of the great older veterans in the league,” wrote Pincus. “The Sixers may bring him back, either on a minimum contract or with part of their RMLE.

“While that seems like the most likely outcome, he’ll probably have minimum offers from the [Los Angeles] Clippers, Lakers and [Phoenix] Suns.”

Lowry was once a standout who made six straight All-Star teams, but he is now 38 years of age. His production has dropped greatly since his last All-Star appearance in the 2019-20 season, and this season, he put up 8.1 points and 4.2 assists a game. While he shot a strong 39.2% from 3-point range, he was at only 43.2% from the field overall.

The Lakers have had interest in Lowry in the recent past. They were reportedly looking to trade for him during the 2020-21 season, but they weren’t willing to give up Talen Horton-Tucker, who was then a promising young guard.

Sixers expected to bring back Kelly Oubre Jr., Nic Batum, Kyle Lowry

The Philadelphia 76ers are expected to bring back Kelly Oubre Jr., Nic Batum, and Kyle Lowry in free agency.

The Philadelphia 76ers have set themselves up very nicely in the 2024 offseason. They have a ton of cap space thanks to the moves made by President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey and they will be major players in free agency and in trades.

The goal is to bring in another star next to Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey in order to take that next step in the Eastern Conference and overtake the Boston Celtics in the East.

With that being said, the Sixers do still need to fill out the rest of the roster. Philadelphia has a number of solid free agents that should be brought back and per Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer, they are focusing on three major ones:

Based on those constraints, a source said Nico Batum, Kelly Oubre Jr., and Kyle Lowry are the free agents the team most likely would like to re-sign. Not only do they mesh well with All-Stars Maxey and Joel Embiid, they might not command a lot of money in the free-agent market.

Oubre was a consistent player on a regular basis for Philadelphia averaging 15.4 points and 5.0 rebounds per game while playing on the veteran’s minimum. The Sixers certainly were appreciative of his athleticism and ability to produce on both ends of the floor.

Batum was acquired from the Los Angeles Clippers in the James Harden trade and shot 39.9% from deep in 57 games with 38 starts. He ended up shooting 40.9% from deep in the playoffs and has great chemistry with Embiid. The Sixers should certainly bring him back.

As for Lowry, he will be 39 when the playoffs start in 2025. He did produce for Philadelphia averaging 8.0 points and 4.6 assists in 23 games with 20 starts after being picked up in the buyout market. Assuming he does return, he should take on a lesser role for the Sixers.

Report: Clippers have interest in Sixers’ Kyle Lowry in free agency

The Los Angeles Clippers are expected to have interest in Philadelphia 76ers guard Kyle Lowry in free agency.

Free agency in the NBA begins on June 30, and teams are starting to gear up for their offseason plans. The Philadelphia 76ers are one of the teams expected to have an active offseason considering the cap space they possess and how few players they have under contract.

Philadelphia has that cap space due to the number of free agents from the roster. One of those free agents is veteran Kyle Lowry, who the Sixers acquired in February through the buyout market.

The Los Angeles Clippers are a team to look out for in the offseason. Per Marc Stein, they are expected to have interest in Lowry and other veteran guards such as Chris Paul and Russell Westbrook:

I nonetheless heard this week that Paul and Kyle Lowry, whose free agency is looming after finishing last season in Philadelphia, are veteran guards said to interest the Clippers … with a further variable to factor in stemming from Russell Westbrook’s still-to-be determined status. Westbrook has a $4 million player option for next season that he must decide on by June 29.

Lowry, 38, averaged 8 points and 4.6 assists. He is a North Philly native. At this stage of his career, likely nearing retirement, it wouldn’t make much sense for him to go across the country. It would be interesting to see what the Clippers will do with their offseason plans.

Kyle Lowry assesses time with Sixers, praises Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey

Veteran Kyle Lowry assesses his time with the Philadelphia 76ers while also praising Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.

PHILADELPHIA — Eighteen-year veteran Kyle Lowry made his way back to Philadelphia to play for his hometown 76ers in the 2023-24 season. He began the year with the Miami Heat before being traded to the Charlotte Hornets. After the deal, he was waived, clearing the way for him to sign with the Sixers.

In 23 games with the Sixers, including 20 starts, he averaged 8 points and 4.6 assists while shooting 40.4% from deep. He also did a number of things not shown in the box score.

After the first-round playoff elimination to the New York Knicks, Lowry assessed his short time with the Sixers. He singled out a few players he saw grow during the second half of the season.

“We got better,” Lowry said. “I think the guys in this locker room, they competed at a high level. The things Joel (Embiid) showed us in this series playing on one leg. Tyrese’s (Maxey) growth. Kelly’s (Oubre Jr.) toughness, I think the team just showed the competitive nature. It was fun. After 18 years, you’d think it gets easier, but it just sucks even more when you lose. Especially, with a great group of guys like this. It was fun to be a part of.”

The growth of both Embiid and Maxey is why Lowry wanted to come to Philadelphia. It was prideful for him to see the young stars continue to grow. Even though the Sixers came up short to the Knicks, both Embiid and Maxey showed a lot of growth on their respective paths to stardom.

“It was part of the reason I came here to be able to be a part of the growth of Tyrese and the growth of Joel and watching them and try to help them as much as I can with the maturation process,” Lowry added. “The things that these guys have done. Joel playing on one leg. Tyrese — in the minute of the game going crazy a couple minutes and going through ups and downs and finding ways to be successful. As a guy who’s been in the league a long time, I was so happy I got the opportunity to play with these guys and be around them.”

As far as Lowry’s future, there is a thought he would be perfect fit alongside Embiid and Maxey. However, he is a free agent and one wonders where he will go in the process.

“We just lost so I’m not even thinking about anything, but figuring out how to get some sleep tonight because I don’t know if I’ll be able to sleep with the way we lost the game,” Lowry added. “I had a great opportunity to be a part of two superstars in this league and for me, it was a joy to be around them. We’ll see what happens in the next couple months.”
