Shohei Ohtani had the coolest gift for Kody Clemens after striking out on a 68 mph pitch

Shohei Ohtani is just the best.

Detroit Tigers infielder Kody Clemens knows a thing or two about pitching greatness. After all, his father is Roger Clemens. But where the elder Clemens dominated opponents with his velocity, Kody is known for his off-off-OFF-speed pitches during occasional mop-up innings.

But you have to give Kody credit. He’ll forever have bragging rights over his dad — only one of them struck out Shohei Ohtani.

During Monday’s lopsided loss to the Angels, Clemens struck Ohtani out looking on a 68 mph “eephus” pitch, and Clemens was pumped. He made sure to save the baseball like he had just recorded his first big-league hit. It was an obvious show of respect for Ohtani, who is putting together another historic season as a two-way star.

Yet, the moment got even better because Ohtani was just a tremendous sport about the strikeout.

Clemens shared on Instagram on Tuesday that Ohtani signed the strikeout ball and left the message, “What a nasty pitch!”

I mean, that’s just so awesome. And the pitch really wasn’t bad.

It’s obviously easier to have fun with the moment after a two-homer game, but that sense of humor is another reason Ohtani is a must-see talent. He knew how much that strikeout meant to Kody, so he went along with the autograph request. That kind of gesture makes him so easy to root for.

Fans loved that gift from Ohtani too.

Infielder Kody Clemens had the best reaction after striking out Shohei Ohtani with a 68 MPH pitch

Roger Clemens’ kid got quite a strikeout.

Hey, did Kody Clemens learn a thing or two from one of the greatest pitchers in MLB history?

The Detroit Tigers infielder who’s also the son of Roger Clemens has pitched six times in 2022, giving up three runs in six innings, which isn’t great.

But at least he can say he struck out Shohei Ohtani.

Called upon to pitch in Monday’s 10-0 Los Angeles Angels blowout, Clemens threw a 68 MPH pitch that hit the low outside corner to nail Ohtani. And Clemens — rightfully so! — was so pumped and asked for the ball to be saved for him.

What a fun, great moment:

WATCH: Texas ex Kody Clemens records first MLB hit

Kody Clemens picks up his first career base hit.

In the second inning facing off against the Chicago White Sox, Kody Clemens recorded his first career MLB hit with a hard-hit single to right field.

It has not been easy sledding for Clemens at the MLB level, his base knock snapped an 0-17 start to his Detroit Tiger career. Clemens provided a veteran answer when asked about his slow start before Monday’s game.

“I think there would be a lot of other people that would be freaking out. At the same time, it hasn’t really fazed me. Trust me, everybody goes through ups and downs in their career. Unfortunately, this is my beginning.”

The former Longhorn got the call to the major leagues on May 30 after hitting .283 with eight home runs at Triple-A Toledo. The 26-year-old Clemens has served as a role player for the Tigers since.

He was drafted in the third round of the 2018 MLB Draft after an All-American campaign at Texas. Clemens hit .355 with 24 home runs en route to Big 12 Player of the Year honors.

Former Longhorn Kody Clemens to make his MLB debut

Former Texas star Kody Clemens is off to the big leagues.

The Detroit Tigers have called up former Texas baseball star infielder Kody Clemens.

Clemens brings a powerful left-handed bat to the Detriot lineup. He hit .256 with 26 home runs in the last two seasons with the Tigers’ Triple-A affiliate in Toledo.

The 26-year-old provides versatility on the defensive side of the ball. Clemens can play second base, third base and both corner outfield positions.

Clemens was selected in the third round of the 2018 MLB Draft after an All-American junior season at Texas.

He led the 2018 Longhorns to a Big 12 Championship and College World Series appearance while hitting .351 with 24 home runs. Clemens was named Big 12 player of the year and a Golden Spikes Award finalist.

Clemens joins right-headed pitcher Bryce Elder as Texas exes to get the call to the big leagues this season.

The Tigers will host the Minnesota Twins on Monday afternoon for Clemens’ Major League debut.

Two Longhorns named to Golden Spikes Award watch list

The Golden Spikes Award is given annually to the best player in college baseball.

The Golden Spikes Award is given annually to the best player in college baseball.

On Tuesday, USA Baseball announced its 2022 Gold Spikes watch list which included 55 players across the country.

Texas starting pitchers Pete Hansen and Tanner Witt were named to the list.

Hansen enters the 2022 season as the ace of the Longhorns staff. He boasts a career ERA of 1.58 over 108 innings pitched. Hansen was also named preseason Big 12 pitcher of the year.

Witt will move into the weekend rotation after a phenomenal freshman season out of the bullpen. Opposing batters hit just .194 against Witt’s electric fastball and wipeout breaking ball last year.

12 Longhorns have been named a Gold Spikes Finalist but none have ever captured the award, most recently Kody Clemens in 2018. Hansen and Witt will have the chance to change that this season.

Texas begins the 2022 season on Friday, Feb. 18 at home against the Rice Owls.

Texas Baseball: Detroit Tigers add former Longhorn Kody Clemens to 40-man roster

Tigers add former Texas standout Kody Clemens to the 40-man roster.

The Detriot Tigers added infielder Kody Clemens to their active 40-man roster on Friday. Adding Clemens to the roster keeps him from being available to other teams in the upcoming Rule Five Draft.

Clemens was selected in the third round of the 2018 MLB draft after an All-American junior season at Texas.

His 2018 season was one of the best in Texas baseball history. Clemens won Big 12 player of the year, finished as a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award and led the Longhorns to the College World Series.

The former Longhorn batted .247 with 18 home runs and 97 RBIs last season in Triple-A. Clemens primary played second base and has proved to be an adequate defender.

According to mlb.com, Clemens is the No. 18 prospect in the Tigers’ organization. Detriot adding him to the 40-man roster shows they have him in their long-term plans.

Two sons try and go yard off Texas Legend Roger Clemens

COVID-19 has postponed baseball, leaving players to work out on their own. The Clemens family has been working out together to stay in shape.

The coronavirus has taken its toll on athletes across the country, whether their sport was in season or out of season. Baseball was just getting started, with all teams in spring training before the season getting delayed.

For former Longhorn Kacy Clemens, he was entering his fourth season in MLB’s minor league system with the Toronto Blue Jays. Spanning from low A ball to AA, the lefty is hitting a career .226 with 26 home runs and 115 RBIs.

A more recent UT grad in Kody Clemens would have been in the middle of his third professional baseball season with the Houston Astros organization. Kody has hit a career .248 with 17 home runs and 83 RBIs.

Despite the shut down of baseball, Kacy and Kody have been staying in shape with the help of their 7x Cy Young-winning father, Roger Clemens.

The family even participated in the Texas virtual tailgate, with Kody and Kacy trying to hit home runs off their father.

Soon enough, both Clemens brothers will be back on the field playing for their respective minor league baseball teams. With the Blue Jays and Astros have great minor league systems, both were on the edge of making the AA squad in 2020.

Until then, Roger will be pitching to them in a virtual ballpark, hopefully not giving up too many more home runs in Fenway Park.
