These two true freshman could make an immediate impact for the Texas Longhorns

That class includes Kobe Black and Colin Simmons, who could play critical roles on defense

When the 2024 college football season begins, freshman around the country will be trying to make their mark. While the Longhorns have an experienced roster, they will be welcoming a talented recruiting class. That class includes [autotag]Kobe Black[/autotag] and [autotag]Colin Simmons[/autotag], who could play critical roles on defense.

Of the two, Simmons will arrive on campus with the highest expectations. He was the highest-ranked member of the Longhorns 2024 class. The Texas native was a menace to quarterbacks in high school and has five-star potential. He will have to compete with Trey Moore and Ethan Burke for snaps at defensive end, but that should be no issue for Simmons.

While Black won’t be rushing the quarterback, he is expected to make life difficult in the secondary. He has the physical tools to compete early and the versatility to play different positions. The talented cornerback will also have the opportunity to make an impact on special teams. Regardless of where the Longhorns put him, Black should be able to force his way into meaningful snaps.

After an offseason full of change, head coach Steve Sarkisian will need the next generation of Longhorns to step up. Last season, pass defense was one of their biggest weaknesses, and improving in that area will go a long way in a new conference. Simmons and Black are two players who make an impact in that area and are determined to make a good first impression.

Texas DB target Kobe Black expected to decide Wednesday afternoon

Kobe Black is expected to choose his college team Wednesday, December 13 at 4:20 p.m.

He needs no introduction. He stands as one of the best defensive back prospects the Longhorns have recruited in head coach Steve Sarkisian’s tenure at Texas.

On3 consensus four-star Kobe Black is set to make his college decision on Wednesday. His choice will no doubt transform the future of defensive back room he chooses. The Longhorns hope it will be the team he picks.

It’s hard to ignore what Texas has built with secondary youth in Austin. Texas’ heavy defensive back rotation utilized several young defensive talents in Malik Muhammad, Terrance Brooks and Derek Williams Jr. Certainly, the team could find Black several snaps in 2024 if not a starting role.

Texas’ underclassmen defensive backs have flashed brilliance this season. Undoubtedly, Black could be the next in line to shine. Wednesday will reveal is he sees the Longhorns in the same light.

Coverage for Black’s commitment is set to begin at 4:20 p.m. CT.

Elite 2024 5-Star CB out of Waco (TX) has announced his commitment date

2024 5-star cornerback Kobe Black, who the Aggies remain in contention for, has announced his upcoming commitment date.

The recruiting journey for 2024 five-star cornerback Kobe Black has been a back-and-forth affair between the Texas Longhorns and the LSU Tigers. Still, after the firing of Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher on Nov. 12, the Aggies have suddenly become an intriguing candidate.

With new A&M head coach Mike Elko officially taking over as of Monday afternoon, a new era of Aggie Football is in store. Elko has already contacted several key 2024 recruits and prospects, which could have included Kobe Black.

Black’s top 5 program list includes Oklahoma State, Oregon, Texas, LSU, and Texas A&M. While Texas Still holds a considerable advantage, mainly due to their success in 2023 coupled with their move to the SEC next season, Elko’s defensive background could make a last-minute impact as he continues to share his vision for the future of the program.

On Wednesday, it was revealed that Black will announce his commitment on Wednesday, Dec. 13, and due to the late announcement, I wouldn’t be surprised if the initial team he picks is the program he’ll play for for the foreseeable future, however, in the age of the transfer portal, nothing is set in stone.

According to 247Sports, Black is positioned as the 35th-ranked prospect in the 2024 cycle, the 3rd-ranked safety (primarily a cornerback), and the 10th-ranked player in Texas.

On3 updates recruiting rankings for 2024 class

On3 has updated the team rankings for the 2024 recruiting class, and the Tigers squeaked into the top 10.

On3 has updated the team rankings for the 2024 recruiting class and the Tigers squeaked into the top 10.

LSU’s 2024 recruiting class has 24 commits currently with 13 four-star commits and 11 three-star commits. The highest-ranked player in the class currently is four-star safety [autotag]Dashawn McBryde[/autotag] from Denham Springs, Louisiana, where he plays for Denham Springs High School.

Six SEC teams made the top ten (Georgia, Texas A&M, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee and LSU). Technically, you could say seven SEC teams made the top ten as Oklahoma is sitting at number eight on the list. Oklahoma and Texas will be joining the SEC next fall. The Longhorns aren’t far behind as they sit at No. 11 in the rankings.

If the Tigers want to move up in the rankings, they have a five-star player on their recruiting board that could make a big difference. LSU is still in contention for five-star cornerback [autotag]Kobe Black[/autotag] from Waco, Texas. His commitment could help the Tigers jump up a few spots.
