Former MSU OL heading back to transfer portal after one year at Illinois

A former Spartans is heading back to the transfer portal just one year after leaving Michigan State

A former Spartans is heading back to the transfer portal just one year after leaving Michigan State.

Ilinois offensive lineman Kevin Wigenton announced on Saturday that he will be entering the transfer portal. Wigenton played for Michigan State for two seasons before transferring to Illinois last offseason.

Wigenton appeared in 12 games this year for Illinois. He started six games at guard for Michigan State in 2023. It’s unclear at this time if Michigan State would pursue bringing back Wigenton, but the offensive line is certainly a position of need for the Spartans in the transfer portal. So don’t be surprised if there’s some chatter connecting Michigan State and Wigenton again.

Rutgers football: What transfer portal players are set for official visits this weekend?

Four transfer portal targets will be hosted by Rutgers football this weekend.

Along with several high school athletes expected on campus for visits, Rutgers football is scheduled to host four transfer portal players this weekend.

Headling the group is Athan Kaliakmanis, a quarterback who spent the last two years at Minnesota. His connection to Rutgers is through Kirk Ciarrocca, who was his offensive coordinator at Minnesota and recruited him to the program.

Ciarrocca is in his first year as the offensive coordinator at Rutgers.

This season, he completed 53.1 percent of his passes for 1,831 yards with 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions for Minnesota. His brother, Dino Kaliakmanis played wide receiver at Minnesota.

Here are the four transfer portal prospects expected for official visits this weekend:

  • Quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis (Minnesota)
  • Tight end Dino Kaliakmanis
  • Wide receiver Dymere Miller (Monmouth)
  • Offensive guard Kevin Wigenton (Michigan State)

The emphasis of the portal visits this weekend is clearly on the offensive side of the ball. Midweek, however, Rutgers hosted for an official visit Anthony Johnson (Youngstown State), a powerful defensive tackle.

The success of [autotag]Jaquae Jackson[/autotag], who came from the Division II level and is now a legitimate NFL prospect, should be a selling point for Rutgers in their pursuit of Miller.

This past season, Miller had an impressive 90 catches for 1,295 receiving yards with nine touchdowns for Monmouth.

Even with the quarterback getting all the hype, the most important visitor this weekend is Wigenton. A former three-star recruit at The Hun School (Princeton, New Jersey), Wigenton has significant experience at Michigan State and has Big Ten size at 6-foot-5 and 320 pounds.

Rutgers football: Kevin Wigenton offered out of the transfer portal

Kevin Wigenton pulls down a Rutgers football offer.

Kevin Wigenton was offered by Rutgers football on Tuesday as the transfer portal offensive lineman pulled in six total offers from Power Five programs. Wigenton, who played his high school football in New Jersey, has spent the past three seasons in the Big Ten with Michigan State.

Wigenton, who posted on social media this past week his intentions to enter the transfer portal, was officially able to do so on Monday. He joined Michigan State as part of their 2021 recruiting class.

He is a former three-star recruit who played his high school football at The Hun School (Princeton, New Jersey). Rivals ranked him as the No. 19 player in New Jersey.

Rutgers was one of several offers for Wigenton, along with Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Pittsburgh, South Carolina and Vanderbilt.

Wigenton made 12 appearances with six starts in 2023 for Michigan State.

Rutgers has made finding offensive line talent a priority this offseason. The line performed much better this past season in its first year under [autotag]Pat Flaherty.[/autotag]

[lawrence-related id=32704,32692,32690]

A veteran offensive line coach, Flaherty brings a wealth of experience having spent two decades in the NFL as an offensive line coach. He won two Super Bowl titles with the New York Giants as their offensive line coach.

Michigan State Football makes top ten for Top-100 OT Jacob Allen

The Spartans have made the final cut for a top-100 player in the 2022 recruiting class.

[jwplayer LOzzVBvn]

Michigan State Football received a positive update on the recruitment of the top recruit in the state of New Jersey on Friday as 4-star offensive tackle Jacob Allen of the Hun School in Princeton, New Jersey put the Spartans in the top ten for his recruitment. He announced his top ten via Rivals.

Allen is the No. 93 player in the 2022 class and the No. 10 ranked offensive tackle.

As we said, Allen went to Hun School, home of MSU 2021 commit Kevin Wigenton. Allen cited Wigenton as a major factor in his interest in joining the Spartans:

“My good friend Kevin Wigenton is going there and they’ve offered a couple my teammates too,” Allen said. “I talk to coach Kap and coach Harris. I’m actually taking in a virtual visit with them this Wednesday. Coach Kap, like a lot of the other coaches I mentioned, is a great person and coach and I can tell just by talking to him and that it’s genuine. Coach Kap is one that I appreciate very much because of how he talks to me. He’s straight up with me which I appreciate.”

Michigan State Football offers 2022 WR Owen Anderson, teammate of MSU commit

Michigan State has offered a 2022 wide receiver who has ties to current MSU commit Kevin Wigenton.

[jwplayer mSDA56Ej-PROpJzTY]

During his time with Michigan State Football, Mel Tucker has shown a commitment to recruiting in the state of New Jersey, and that is continuing in the 2022 class. On Wednesday, the Spartans offered 2022 wide receiver and outside linebacker Owen Anderson.

Anderson currently plays for The Hun School in Princeton, New Jersey, which is where Michigan State commit Kevin Wigenton played high school ball.

From what I can see, Anderson is currently unranked and the Spartans look to be his first Power 5 offer that I can find.

Three top New Jersey football recruiting prospects, one already committed, will visit Michigan State this weekend.

[jwplayer PH0GG6LS]

With the fall college football season now canceled, the Michigan State Football coaching staff can now turn their attention to their future incoming recruiting classes. Over the weekend, Michigan State will be hosting multiple prospects, including one player who has already committed to the Spartans. There will be three high school players in town in total, all from New Jersey.

These players are Geno VanDeMark, Audric Estime, and Kevin Wigenton, who is already committed. Michigan State recently picked up Crystal Ball predictions for both VanDeMark and Estime who would be huge lands for Mel Tucker and his staff for the 2021 recruiting class.

Wigenton is a 3-star offensive guard out of Hun School in Princeton, New Jersey while VanDeMark and Estime are both 4-star prospects. Estime is a running back and VanDeMark is an offensive guard. Both players play for St. Joseph Regional High School in Montvale, New Jersey.

Michigan State lands commitment of three-star lineman Kevin Wigenton

Michigan State lands its second offensive line commit in the 2021 class.

The Juice Squad has another member.

Michigan State has landed its second offensive lineman recruit in the form of Kevin Wigenton out of Princeton, NJ.

Wigenton, an offensive guard listed at 6-foot-5, 290 pounds, is a three-star prospect, ranked as the 41st-best guard in the class of 2021 by the 247Sports composite rankings. Wigenton is rated at a .8366 in the composite rankings. Coincidentally he is the third member of Michigan State’s 2021 class to have that exact .8366 rating.

Wigenton chose Michigan State over a final four that included Maryland, Pittsburgh, and Tennessee. Wigenton also had power five offers from Indiana and Vanderbilt.

The HunSchool product is the eighth member of Michigan State’s 2021 recruiting class, which as of publishing ranks 28th in the country and ninth in the Big Ten. The recruiting class is expected to continue to grow this week, with a number of MSU targets set to announce their commitments soon.
