2024 NFL draft: Preseason WR watch list and early rankings

An early ranking of the receivers in the 2024 NFL draft class and WR watch list from Draft Wire’s Jeff Risdon

Wide receiver is generally one of the deepest positions in every draft. It’s also one where players can rise quickly, notably underclassmen or transfers who benefit from better QB play or a more conducive scheme.

These are very fluid rankings. In general, these are early impressions about the NFL potential of players who still have a considerable amount of football to play before they’re drafted.

With some feedback and info from a couple of team-employed NFL scouts and an active player agent, here is an early listing and my preliminary ranking for the wide receivers in the NFL draft class of 2024.

WATCH: Keon Coleman explains that it was always his plan to end back up in the south

According to Keon Coleman, it was always his plan to end back up in the south

It shocked a lot of Michigan State football fans when star wide receiver Keon Coleman announced that he would be leaving East Lansing to head back south to Florida State. According to his own words in an episode of ‘DaChosenOnes Podcast’, this was actually his plan all along.

On the podcast, Coleman explained that he wanted to get out of his home area for a few years, learn how to play in the cold, and learn from a coaching staff that had NFL experience like Michigan State, and ultimately end back up at a southern school. Coleman is now at Florida State.

Report: Former MSU WR Keon Coleman is down to FSU, Ole Miss as transfer destinations

It looks like a return to Michigan State is not in the cards for wide receiver Keon Coleman

It looks like a return to Michigan State is not in the cards for wide receiver Keon Coleman.

Coleman is considered one of the most prized remaining players in the transfer portal, and he reportedly is down to two schools — Florida State and Ole Miss. Coleman visited both schools in the past few weeks and 247Sports is reporting that those are the remaining two schools he’s considering at this point.

247Sports is also reporting that a decision from Coleman could come as soon as Wednesday.

Coleman led the Spartans in receiving last year and was considered to be their top offensive threat in 2023. However, he stunned many by entering the transfer portal on the final day of the open window.

There was hope that Coleman could change his mind and return to Michigan State but that now appears to be unlikely. Click on the tweet below to read the complete update on Coleman from 247Sports:

Michigan football reaches out to surprising prospect in transfer portal

Brilliant. #GoBlue

When it comes to bolstering the upcoming Wolverines team, Michigan football isn’t shy about what it wants.

Despite returning the fifth-most production in college football and being loaded at nearly every position, the maize and blue are continuing to be active in the transfer portal.

Sometimes that means filling a need, such as bringing in kickers James Turner and Hudson Hollenbeck. Sometimes it’s about pure talent, such as targeting Ole Miss defensive tackle Tywone Malone.

The latest pursuit seems a mix of the two although it has an unlikely target.

On3’s Hayes Fawcett made a graphic and released it on Saturday night, indicating what schools soon-to-be former Michigan State wide receiver Keon Coleman has heard from after entering the transfer portal. It turns out that Michigan, the Spartans’ chief rival, has made its interest in the standout receiver known.

Coleman is a dual-sport athlete, also playing basketball at a high-level in college.

A transfer within the rivalry is rare but not unheard of. In 2021, Michigan linebacker Ben VanSumeren transferred from Ann Arbor to East Lansing, much to the chagrin of his former teammates. Linebacker Edward Warinner made the opposite move in 2020, which made more sense as a reserve; his father was on the staff as the offensive line coach.
