Safety Curtis Riley is back. After being released on Tuesday, the Arizona Cardinals announced two practice squad moves. Riley was re-signed to the practice squad, where he was originally signed.

Riley started for the Cardinals in Week 4, had six tackles but struggled.

The Cardinals also reinstated safety Kentrell Brice from the practice squad injured reserve to the practice squad. He suffered an ankle injury at the beginning of the year.

This gives the Cardinals a number of safeties. They now have four on the active roster and three on the practice squad (Riley, Brice and T.J. Ward, whom they added last week), as well as Jalen Thompson on injured reserve.

Budda Baker is expected to be back in the lineup after missing one game.

The Cardinals had vacancies on the practice squad after Jonathan Ward was signed to the active roster. Defensive lineman Jonathan Bullard is no longer listed on the practice squad roster. It is likely he signed with another team.

Cardinals S Kentrell Brice carted off field with apparent leg injury from practice

Brice was signed on August 5.

The Arizona Cardinals lost cornerback Robert Alford for the season after he suffered a torn pectoral muscle in practice nearly two weeks ago. They might have another major injury coming out of training camp.

Safety Kentrell Brice, signed at the beginning of August, went down during the team’s Red and White practice on Friday, according to multiple reporters in attendance. He had to be carted off the field.

SI.com’s Mason Kern described it this way:

During the open portion of practice, safety Kentrell Brice was rolled up on in a routine run play designed for rusher Eno Benjamin during a rep with the second team. He was observed lying on his back gripping his left leg before trainers came to the field to examine the issue.

Shortly after, Brice was helped to his feet and could not place any weight on his left leg as he was ushered to the cart. As he was being transported off the field, Kingsbury was observed walking over to the cart and exchanging some words with Brice before he was taken off the field.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury, when asked how the team came out of the practice health-wise, did not mention anything had happened to Brice.

Brice did not play in 2019. He spend three seasons with the Green Bay Packers, starting 10 if the 14 games in which he played in 2018.

However, he was going to have to battle for a final spot on the roster at safety. If it is serious, it will likely force him to injured reserve.

Cardinals announce signing of S Kentrell Brice

Brice had 100 tackles in three seasons with the Packers.

After the release of undrafted rookie safety Reggie Floyd, the Arizona Cardinals were left with only five safeties on the roster. They bolstered the depth with some experience.

The team announced Wednesday the signing of safety Kentrell Brice.

Brice hasn’t played since 2018, but spent three years with the Green Bay Packers from 2016-2018 after making the team as an undrafted rookie. In three seasons, he played in 36 games, starting 14 He had 100 tackles, an interception and six pass breakups.

He spent the 2019 offseason and preseason with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but was cut before the season and was not signed until this offseason, when he joined the Chicago Bears, who cut him last week.

The 5-11, 200-pounder will likely compete for a backup spot at safety, as Pro Bowler Budda Baker and Jalen Thompson are slated to start. The Cardinals also have 2019 fifth-round pick Deionte Thompson and special teams aces Charles Washington and Chris Banjo also on the roster.

Bears release LB Devante Bond, S Kentrell Brice and WR Alex Wesley

With the official report date for training camp just days away, the Bears have started trimming their roster down to 80 players.

With the official report date for training camp just days away, the Chicago Bears have begun making cuts to their roster to get it down to 80 players.

The Bears announced the release of linebacker Devante Bond, safety Kentrell Brice and wide receiver Alex Wesley on Sunday night.

Bond was signed by the Bears last December, and he appeared in the final three games of the 2019 season exclusively on special teams. The former sixth-round pick appeared in 29 games with six starts in three seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he tallied 26 tackles and one tackle-for-loss.

Brice, a former undrafted free agent out of Louisiana Tech, signed with the Bears on Jan. 8. In three seasons with the Packers, Brice played in 26 games with 14 starts, where he registered 100 tackles, including one tackle-for-loss, six pass breakups, one interception, one sack and one fumble recovery. He signed with the Buccaneers last March, but he was released as part of final cuts.

Wesley, who was an undrafted free agent out of Northern Colorado, joined the New York Giants last year. Wesley was released as part of final cuts, and he joined Chicago’s practice squad last December.

The Bears roster is now down to 85, and they need to release five more players ahead of the Aug. 16 deadline.

Bears 2020 training camp preview: Safeties

With Eddie Jackson sliding back over to his natural position at free safety, the Chicago Bears defense should get a big boost.

Potentially a question mark entering the offseason, the Chicago Bears quieted the doubters when they signed safety Tashaun Gipson to replace Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, who departed in free agency. Clinton-Dix was persuaded by friend and former Alabama teammate to join the Bears on a one-year, “prove-it” deal, which turned into another one-year deal with the Cowboys.

In order to accommodate Clinton-Dix, All-Pro safety Eddie Jackson slid over to strong safety, taking him away from plays on the ball. Now that Jackson is back in his natural position at free safety, the Chicago Bears defense should get a significant boost.

Let’s review what the Bears safety room looks like as a whole.

Back at free safety this season, Jackson should be more comfortable doing what he does best, which is making plays on the ball. The former fourth-round pick has quickly become one of the best safeties in the league, highlighted by an All-Pro year in 2018 where he tallied six interceptions, returning two for touchdowns.

Both of Jackson’s interceptions last year came in desperation mode for the opposition, but the Bears will be counting on him to create turnovers this year.

9 Bears players in danger of being cut ahead of training camp

Let’s take a look at nine Bears players that are unlikely to survive those pre-training camp cuts ahead of Tuesday’s report date.

There have been a number of obstacles that the Chicago Bears have had to deal with during this unconventional offseason amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Whether that’s an entirely virtual offseason or absence of a preseason, which is a blow to late-round draft picks, undrafted free agents and other players looking to make an NFL roster.

As that wasn’t a big blow, NFLPA leadership informed players that rosters will be trimmed from 90 to 80 to start training camp. Which means the Bears need to cut 10 players by next Tuesday.

Chicago already parted ways with tight end Ben Braunecker on Thursday. Now they need to cut nine players ahead of Tuesday.

Let’s take a look at nine players that are in danger of being released by the Bears ahead of training camp.

S Kentrell Brice

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

With a crop of veteran safeties ahead of him, Kentrell Brice faces an uphill battle to lock down a roster spot. Eddie Jackson and Tashaun Gipson will likely be the starting safeties, with returning Bears Deon Bush and DeAndre Houston Carson serving as depth. And Brice, who was undrafted out of Louisiana Tech, might not make it to training camp given guys like free-agent addition Jordan Lucas and Sherrick McManis, both who bring more as special teams contributors.

Bears sign safety Kentrell Brice to a reserve/future contract

The Bears signed veteran safety Kentrell Brice to a reserve/future contract on Wednesday.

The Chicago Bears signed veteran safety Kentrell Brice to a reserve/future contract on Wednesday.

Brice spent three seasons with the Green Bay Packers from 2016-18, where he played in 36 games with 14 starts. He logged 100 tackles, one interception, six pass breakups, one sack, one fumble recovery and one tackle-for-loss.

In 2018, Brice had a career-high 10 starts and 50 tackles, which included nine tackles and one sack of Mitchell Trubisky in the season opener against the Bears.

Brice signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency last season, but he was waived before the start of the season.

The Bears have signed 10 players to reserve/future contracts:

  • WR Reggie Davis
  • WR Thomas Ives
  • WR Alex Wesley
  • TE Dax Raymond
  • OL Dino Boyd
  • OL Sam Mustipher
  • LB James Vaughters
  • DB Xavier Crawford
  • DB Stephen Denmark
  • TE Darion Clark

Reserve/future contracts are signed for players not on an active roster by season’s end, which reserves them a spot on a team’s 90-man roster.
