Wisconsin football’s receiving leaders from 2021

Wisconsin football’s top 10 leaders in receiving yards from 2021:

The Wisconsin Badgers’ passing attack was underwhelming last season, and unfortunately, forced the Badgers to become one-dimensional and overreliant on the run against tough Big Ten defenses.

Tight end Jake Ferguson was the most consistent threat for the Badgers’ passing attack and provided an often-needed escape valve for quarterback Graham Mertz when he was under pressure.

Another bright spot from last season is the emergence and development of younger receivers who will be replacing the core of Danny Davis, Kendric Pryor and Jack Dunn. Junior WR Chimere Dike will take over as the primary receiver after finishing with 272 receiving yards and a touchdown last season.

Redshirt freshman Markus Allen will likely be in a starting role, and with luck, will expand upon the flashes he showed with big catches against Rutgers and Arizona State late in the season.

Hopefully, after struggling the last two years in the passing game, the addition of new receivers and offensive coordinator Bobby Engram will help revive the Wisconsin passing game.

Notre Dame vs. Wisconsin: Third-Quarter Analysis

Oh boy.

Just when it looked like Notre Dame might take control of the game, Wisconsin has come out in the second half looking like a different team. While they haven’t lost control of it, the outcome is a lot more uncertain. We have a 10-10 tie after three quarters.

The Irish’s offense gain no yardage on its first two drives, but something more serious might have happened instead. Jack Coan was sacked on one play and something appeared to happen to his knee. It was serious enough that he went to the locker room, forcing Drew Pyne into action. More on that in a moment.

On the first play of the Badgers’ second possession, Graham Mertz hit Chez Mellusi for a 35-yard completion. He then found Kendric Pryor on two of the next three plays, the latter of which was an 8-yard touchdown pass, Mertz’s first of the season. Hey, it took him long enough.

Pyne had a decent first drive, getting the offense from its own 16-yard line to the Wisconsin 39. That was as far as it got, though it set up Jay Bramblett to punt the ball 37 yards to 7. The Badgers went three-and-out, and a 10-yard punt return by Kyren Williams allowed the Irish to start in Badgers territory. But any hope for a successful drive was immediately dashed when Rodas Johnson forced the ball from Pyne’s hand on the first play and Jack Sanborn recovered to give the Badgers excellent field position.

With basically the equivalent of a big offensive play having just taken place, the Badgers made the most of the opportunity. By the end of the quarter, they had reached the Irish’s 10, though they were moved back to the 11 on a loss. Things are looking grim right now. Let’s hope that changes.

Notre Dame vs. Wisconsin: First-Quarter Analysis

Not the start we were hoping for.

This year’s Shamrock Series game looks like it will the barn burner everyone expected it to be. The game could just as easily swing as a dominant performance for one team or another. For now, Notre Dame has some work to do as it trails Wisconsin, 3-0, after one quarter.

The Irish took the ball first at their own 22-yard line and only moved backwards as Jack Coan was sacked by Matt Henningsen. Jay Bramblett couldn’t punt the ball out of Irish territory, and Graham Mertz made him pay with a 23-yard completion to Kendric Pryor on his first play. The Badgers couldn’t move much after that, but Collin Larsh salvaged the drive with a 37-yard field goal.

After Coan took another sack, his next drive went a lot better as he executed a pass-heavy attack to counter the Badgers’ strong run defense. He completed six passes to set up first-and-goal on the 10. When a pair of runs went nowhere, Coan went deep in the pocket for a pass but fell down at the 21. Jonathan Doerer came on to tie the game but missed a 39-yard field goal, keeping the Irish off the scoreboard.

The game then reached a stall as the teams traded three-and-outs. After that, Mertz seized momentum on a 42-yard pass to Clay Cundiff to set the Badgers up on the Irish’s 30. The Irish soon put a stop to that by stuffing Chez Mellusi on fourth-and-1. You never know what’s going to happen next in a game like that.

In addition to posting the splits for his electronically timed 40-yard dash, Pryor tweeted that he reached a peak speed of 23 miles per hour. The day before, the Hazel Crest, Illinois, native posted another video of himself landing an outstanding 69-inch box jump.

It will definitely be exciting to see what Pryor can do this year, especially since he struggled with injuries for most of last season.

A look at the Big Ten passing leaders in 2020

Just one year removed from losing running back Jonathan Taylor to the NFL draft, Wisconsin’s offense showed some growing pains last season starting a true freshman running back in Jalen Berger and redshirt freshman quarterback Graham Mertz for the majority of the season.

Despite the relative inexperience, injuries and struggles with COVID-19 during the season, QB Graham Mertz finished in the top 10 in the Big Ten Conference last season in passing yards per game. His numbers will likely improve in the 2021 season with an offseason to recover from his shoulder injury sustained against Michigan. The offense will also be returning wide receiver Danny Davis and Kendric Pryor healthy, as well as tight end Jake Ferguson.

Below is the ranking of the top 10 players in passing yards per game from the Big Ten Conference 2020 season. Players from Wisconsin, Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan State, Michigan, Indiana, Maryland, Iowa, Rutgers and Minnesota all made the ranking.

It’s a group that struggled last season, mostly due to injuries to top options Danny Davis and Kendric Pryor.

But the whole group returns for the 2021 campaign. With a full spring and summer session set to help Graham Mertz’s connection with the group immensely, we should expect a bounce-back season from the pass-catchers.

The most significant of the three is Davis, who started for the Badgers last season but only played in two games due to injury.

Five starters are OUT for Wisconsin today against Wake Forest

The injury report is out for Wisconsin football’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl matchup against Wake Forest. For yet another week, the report brought…

The Wisconsin football program has released its pregame status report heading into their Duke’s Mayo Bowl matchup with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

Excluded from the injury list, meaning he will suit up and play, is running back Jalen Berger—a player who has missed the team’s last two games.

Listed as out for the game, however, are wide receivers Kendric Pryor and Danny Davis, left tackle Cole Van Lanen, defensive end Isaiahh Loudermilk and right guard Logan Bruss.

Also out for today is backup running back Nakia Watson and backup cornerback Semar Melvin.

The absence of Pryor and Davis today will mean the two receivers combined to play only five games this season—that after the offense showed promise Week 1 against Illinois when the two players were both healthy.

Quarterback Graham Mertz and the Wisconsin offense will now need to see tight end Jake Ferguson and wide receivers Chimere Dike and Jack Dunn step up in the receiving game and replacements along the offensive line to play well if the unit wants to compliment their rushing attack and find success against a soft Wake Forest defense.

Five key starters for Wisconsin are OUT today against Minnesota

Wisconsin Badgers will be without running back Jalen Berger, wide receivers Kendric Pryor and Danny Davis and more today against Minnesota

The Wisconsin Badger offense has been anything but healthy this season, with starting quarterback Jack Coan going down with a foot injury before the season started, members of the team testing positive for COVID-19, wide receivers Kendric Pryor and Danny Davis missing several weeks and more.

That trend continued today as according to the team’s depth chart they will be without key starters RB Jalen Berger, RB Nakia Watson, WR Danny Davis, LT Cole Van Lanen and WR Kendric Pryor for the second straight week.

Quarterback Graham Mertz will now rely on Chimere Dike and Jack Dunn at wide receiver and Garrett Groshek at running back, a combination that hasn’t worked very well for the last few weeks.

One good sign for the Badger offense is this Minnesota defense is nothing close to that of Northwestern, Indiana or Iowa, or even to the unit they had last season.

The game will kick off at 3 p.m. CST and be available on the Big Ten Network and the FOX Sports app.
