Colts worked out WR Jarvis Landry among several players

Here are the eight players the Indianapolis Colts worked out Tuesday, including WR Jarvis Landry.

The Indianapolis Colts held a workout for several players Tuesday, including five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Jarvis Landry.

The Colts wound up signing one player from the group of workouts, and it’s clear they had an eye to find a potential return specialist, which is likely why they signed Jaydon Mickens to the practice squad.

The Colts still have one more spot open on the active roster after suspending Isaiah McKenzie and Tony Brown for conduct detrimental to the team so it wouldn’t be a surprise if they added another player from this group.

Here’s a look at the eight players the Colts worked out Tuesday:

Recently-released Saints wide receiver lands with Dolphins

Recently-released New Orleans Saints wide receiver Keke Coutee landed with the Miami Dolphins, joining other former Saints like Terron Armstead and Eli Apple:

Yet another former New Orleans Saints player has landed with the Miami Dolphins, who signed wide receiver Keke Coutee after the Saints released him last week to open a roster spot for linebacker Jaylon Smith, per the daily NFL transactions wire.

Coutee experienced some gaffes fielding punts at Saints training camp, and the number of bodies in the receiving corps made him expendable. New Orleans has continued to whittle down the group by releasing veteran wideout James Washington.

Miami has collected a number of former Saints including All-Pro left tackle Terron Armstead, defensive backs Trill Williams and Bryce Thompson, defensive tackle Josiah Bronson, and much-maligned cornerback Eli Apple. But it’ll be a while before any of them play against their old team. Barring a surprise Super Bowl matchup this year, New Orleans isn’t scheduled to see the Dolphins again until they visit Miami for a road game in 2025.

Saints release veteran WR to open a roster spot for LB Jaylon Smith

The Saints released veteran wide receiver Keke Coutee to open a roster spot for linebacker Jaylon Smith:

The New Orleans Saints released veteran wide receiver Keke Coutee to open a roster spot for linebacker Jaylon Smith, head coach Dennis Allen said Friday. Smith had a successful tryout with the team and signed with them on Thursday, practicing for the first time on Friday at the Caesars Superdome — though Allen cautioned he doesn’t expect Smith to play in Sunday’s preseason game with the Kansas city Chiefs after arriving in town so soon.

No position group had more players rostered for training camp than wide receiver. Coutee, formerly of the Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts, was one of many experienced pros on the depth chart along with Lynn Bowden, Bryan Edwards, James Washington, Keith Kirkwood, and Kawaan Baker (plus rookies A.T. Perry and Shaquan Davis).

None of them had made much noise to unseat Tre’Quan Smith as the team’s fourth wideout behind Michael Thomas, Chris Olave, and Rashid Shaheed, so it made sense to thin out the group and open more practice reps.

Saints sign multiple free agents after minicamp tryouts

The Saints added three offensive players Thursday in a wave of roster moves after tryouts at their minicamp practices this week: | @crissy_froyd

The New Orleans Saints announced a series of roster moves on Thursday evening, noting that the team had added three new offensive players after tryouts at minicamp. They’ll have opportunities to compete for roster spots during training camp and this summer’s preseason games, but each of these players is very much on the bubble going deeper into the offseason. Get to know the newest members of the black and gold:

The New Orleans Saints aren’t just gathering everyone under contract for training camp — multiple veteran free agents are trying out during the three-day series of practice sessions. This was the case last year, too, when the Saints brought in running back David Johnson and some other players who later signed during the season.

Sports Illustrated’s John Hendrix first reported that offensive lineman Pat Elflein and wide receiver Keke Coutee were among the tryouts at Tuesday’s workout, which was confirmed by NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill. What’s the word on them?

Elflein, 28, is listed at 6-foot-3 and 305 pounds and played college football at Ohio State. He’s a career center who was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the third round (at No. 70 overall) in 2017, having also spent time with the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers while starting 64 of the 65 games he’s played in the NFL. He was college teammates with several Saints stars like cornerback Marshon Lattimore and wide receiver Michael Thomas.

Coutee, 26, weighs in at 5-foot-11 and 180 pounds and was a standout at Texas Tech in college. He was picked by the Houston Texans in the fourth round (at No. 103 overall) in the 2018 draft but played for the Indianapolis Colts the last few years. He was a favorite target of Patrick Mahomes’ in Texas Tech’s wide-open passing attack, but he’s struggled to find much success in the NFL while averaging just 2.6 receptions for 29.3 receiving yards per game in his pro career.

We’ll get a better idea of which free agents the Saints are hosting for tryouts when the daily NFL transactions wire updates on Tuesday afternoon, but this is a good opportunity for veteran players to look for work and for the team to address any lingering holes on their depth chart.

Update: Hendrix and Underhill add that former Kentucky wide receiver Lynn Bowden Jr. was also in attendance on a tryout basis. The 25-year-old former Las Vegas Raiders third-round pick (No. 80 overall in 2020) is listed at 5-foot-11 and 203 pounds, but has bounced around the league while struggling to find his footing in the NFL. He’s also played for the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots.

Additionally, Underhill reports that while the Saints are interested in bringing Elflein in for a tryout, he’s biding his time to see if an opportunity to start opens up around the league before settling for a role as a backup.

Packers to host workout for veteran WR Keke Coutee

The Packers are hosting a workout for free-agent wide receiver Keke Coutee on Tuesday.

The Green Bay Packers are hosting veteran wide receiver and punt returner Keke Coutee for a workout on Tuesday, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Coutee, 26, was a fourth-round pick of the Houston Texans in the 2018 draft. He’s played in 33 career games, catching 85 passes for 966 yards and four touchdowns while also returning 24 punts and five kickoffs.

Coutee caught at least 20 passes in three straight seasons for the Texans and then spent the last two years with the Indianapolis Colts. For his career, Coutee has caught 71.4 percent of targets and averaged 8.1 yards per target and 11.4 yards per catch.

Coutee set career-highs for catches (33), yards (400) and touchdowns (3) in 2020. Last year, he returned 17 punts for 152 yards (long of 19) for the Colts.

If signed, Coutee would provide a veteran slot presence for a receiver depth chart featuring mostly first- and second-year players in Green Bay.

The Packers got a first-hand look at Coutee during joint practices and a preseason game with the Texans in 2019.

Colts elevate two from practice squad for Week 18

The Colts elevated two players from the practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts elevated wide receiver Keke Coutee and safety Trevor Denbow from the practice squad to the active roster, the team announced Saturday.

It seems the Colts will be seeing the return of wide receiver Ashton Dulin (concussion) so they should have a full wide receiver room. Coutee also will provide some help on special teams.

Denbow will be called up likely to take a role on special teams considering the injuries that have hit the secondary. There’s a chance the Colts could be without cornerbacks Brandon Facyson (concussion) and Stephon Gilmore (wrist), both of which are questionable.

Colts sign WR Keke Coutee to the practice squad

Colts bring back Keke Coutee to the practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts signed wide receiver Keke Coutee to the practice squad and released tight end Dominique Dafney from the practice squad, the team announced Thursday.

Given that wide receiver Ashton Dulin is in the concussion protocol and unlikely to play against the New York Giants this week, Coutee is likely being brought in as a potential elevation from the practice squad.

Coutee spent time on the practice squad earlier in the season and a bit of time on the active roster when Dulin was out with a different injury.

He’s likely to work mostly on special teams, and he still has two more standard elevations remaining so the Colts don’t have to sign him to the active roster if they don’t want to.

Colts promote TE Nikola Kalinic to active roster

Here are the roster moves the Indianapolis Colts made Tuesday.

The Indianapolis Colts signed tight end Nikola Kalinic from the practice squad to the active roster and waived wide receiver Keke Coutee, the team announced Tuesday.

Kalinic had already used up his maximum of three standard gameday elevations from the practice squad so if the Colts wanted him available to play in games, he needed to be signed to the active roster.

Coutee hasn’t done much outside of provide some special teams help but with the emergence of cornerback Dallis Flowers as a return man, the veteran wideout became expendable.

The Colts also announced they signed wide receiver Robert Foster to the practice squad.
