Tempers flared, leading to Kei’Trel Clark’s big play in Cardinals’ win over 49ers

Had Sean Murphy-Bunting and Jauan Jennings not have been tossed, Clark wouldn’t have been in the game for him to have a big interception.

The Arizona Cardinals had their depth at cornerback tested on Sunday in their 47-24 win over the San Francisco 49ers, and that led to a critical play.

Kei’Trel Clark’s fourth-quarter interception when the Cardinals were up by nine points changed what could have been a close game into a blowout.

In normal circumstances, he wouldn’t have been in the game, but Max Melton injured his wrist early and didn’t return.

Then, in the second quarter, cornerback Sean-Murphy Bunting and 49ers receiver Jauan Jennings were both ejected.

With the 49ers in the red zone, after Josh Dobbs completed a 10-yard pass to Jennings, on the next play, Jennings block cornerback Star Thomas V during a nine-yard run play by Patrick Taylor, but the blocking continued after the play, leading to a minor tussle. Both were flagged for offsetting personal fouls.

On the next play, a six-yard run by Dobbs, Jennings blocked Murphy-Bunting, but things continued after the play, leading to personal fouls by both players, and both were ejected.

Safety Budda Baker saw the altercation coming.

After the play with Thomas, Baker said, “I definitely heard Murphy-Bunting and Jenning talking that next play, so I already knew what it was going to be. Sadly, they lined up next to each other, so I knew what it was going to be.”

He said he told Murphy-Bunting that it wasn’t smart, but “we’re all human and we make mistakes.”

Jennings suggested the whole thing was Murphy-Bunting’s fault.

“(It was) just a normal pancake in a book of football,” he said after the game. “I took him to the ground and I tried to get up and he wouldn’t let me get up. (He) just kept grabbing my jersey, grabbing my face mask as much as he could. Anything to grab me and I was just trying to get him off of me.”

Jenning’s ejection caused him to miss out on an important milestone. He entered the game needing 77 yards to reach 1,000 receiving yards for the first time in his career. He had seven catches for 52 yards in the second quarter when he got tossed, so he finished 25 yards short.

But were it not for that, Clark would not have been in the game in the fourth quarter when, the Cardinals leading 33-24 with 6:40 to go in the game, Dobbs threw a pass to Ricky Pearsall that went off his hands. Clark managed to get both hands underneath the ball while falling to the ground and made the interception. What originally looked like a pick-six was, upon review, just an interception and he was touched down. But Kyle Murray’s 12-yard touchdown pass to Marvin Harrison Jr. three plays later, blew the game wide open, making it 40-24.

Baker described what happened.

“I was so excited. It was one of those pressures that it could possibly have been me or someone else,” he explained, “but  they did a motion, and I was like, ‘Oh yeah, let’s ride. It’s my turn to blitz.’

“So I just told (Clark) to jump it, because I knew (the ball) was going to come out quick. So he did exactly that. I’m very happy for him. He has more picks than me and he’s played not even a fraction of my snaps. I’m very excited for him and for the future of our young corners and the DB group as a whole.”

It was Clark’s only interception of the season. He played 44 defensive snaps in the game. He finished with 97 for the season.

Check out which Cardinals player got to wear the Pat Tillman jersey in Week 14

Kei’Trel Clark, second-year cornerback, was the Cardinals’ scout-team player of the week this week and got o wear a Pat Tillman jersey.

His first two seasons have been somewhat like a roller coaster for cornerback Kei’Trel Clark.

A sixth-round pick in 2023, he opened the season as a starter and did that for five of the first six games. However, he started only two more games for the remainder of the season.

This year, he’s played mostly on special teams and was inactive for two games. In the 10 games Clark has played, he was on the field for a total of 45 defensive snaps with 21 in Week 5 against the 49ers when Garrett Williams was inactive. There have also been 79 snaps on special teams.

In practice, there has been a lot of scout-team work and that resulted in him being that group’s Pat Tillman Player of the Week for what he did in preparation for last week’s game against the Vikings. That meant he’s wearing the special Tillman No. 40 jersey in practice this week.

Clark said he told Williams he hadn’t been thinking about winning the award, but then said, “It’s definitely a blessing to have it and now that I have it, I don’t want to get rid of it.

“Now my goal is to get it again for this week. I just want to keep on stacking the days and it’s good to see that my hard work is being noticed.”

Clark said he didn’t know much about Tillman’s legacy before he arrived in Arizona last year. However, he noted, “Since I’ve been here, I’ve been literally plastered with the type of person that he was and what he meant to this club and how influential he was in the NFL as well just as a person. I feel like it’s an honor to be able to get that award.”

The self-aware Clark believes the award isn’t only about practice.

He said, “It’s how you are in the building. How you treat people, just how you are every single day when you approach the job and touch the green grass. It’s about keeping on task and just a matter of being consistent, being disciplined and being the best teammate and person I can be.”

Those are words that surely defined Pat Tillman.

Cardinals player fined in win over Jets

Clark was flagged for what was deemed an illegal blindside block on a play that was not penalized.

For the second consecutive week, an Arizona Cardinals player was fined for a play that failed to draw a penalty flag from the officials.

In last Sunday’s game against the Jets, the NFL’s fine police “discovered” an alleged blindside block by cornerback Kei’Trel Clark on a Jets punt from their own 21-yard line in the second quarter. Clark lined up on the right side of the Cardinals punt-return team and was matched against the gunner, who appeared to be either Brandin Echols or Jarrick Bernard-Converse.

The player got by Clark, but he caught up to the player at about the Cardinals 48-yard line and blocked him from the side as the player moved toward Clark. It wasn’t a particularly hard block and occurred in the open field, but there was no flag thrown. The fine was $5,373.

The previous week, safety Joey Blount was fined $16,883 for a facemask infraction on a Bears punt, on which there was no apparent grab or pull. There was also no penalty called on the play and Blount has appealed. He was also fined for a penalized facemask penalty in Week 6 against Green Bay.

Meanwhile, Jets cornerback D.J. Reed was fined $11,255 for taunting on the second-quarter, nine-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kyler Murray to wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. Reed was covering Harrison, and at least on available replays was not seen taunting anyone.

In the first 10 weeks of the season, there have been 264 plays league-wide that resulted in fines and the Cardinals have been involved in six.

Two other teams have had six plays fined, Indianapolis and Minnesota. Seven teams have had fewer: Pittsburgh and Tennessee, 5; Cincinnati and New England, 4; and Green Bay and Washington, 3.

Those with double-digit fined plays are New Orleans, 17; Miami and the N.Y. Jets, 14; Denver, 12; Detroit and Kansas City, 11; Houston, Philadelphia, Seattle and Tampa Bay, 10.

Cardinals fined in 2024

  • LB Mack Wilson Sr. vs. Rams, penalized for taunting: $11,255
  • TE Trey McBride vs. 49ers, non-penalized block out of bounds: $9,545
  • S Joey Blount vs. Green Bay, penalized facemask: $5,472
  • RB DeeJay Dallas vs. Green Bay, penalized horse collar, $11,102. Dallas had the fine rescinded on appeal.
  • S Joey Blount vs. Chicago, non-penalized facemask: $16,883
  • CB Kei’Trel Clark vs. N.Y. Jets, non-penalized blindside block: $5,372

Jonathan Gannon expects CB Kei’Trel Clark to get back into the defensive rotation

“He’ll be back in the mix. There’s only so many guys that get a jersey on gameday, you have to have a role to be up like the other guys this week.”

When the Arizona Cardinals released their inactive list on Sunday for their game against the Baltimore Ravens, there was a notable player — rookie cornerback Kei’Trel Clark. He was a healthy scratch and didn’t even get to suit up.

It was the second week in a row he did not play. In Seattle, he was active but did not log a single snap.

While it would appear he is in head coach Jonathan Gannon’s doghouse, comments made by the head coach suggest that it is, at worst, a temporary situation.

“I like the other guys, what they’re doing right now,” Gannon said after the game on Sunday. “They all had a good week of practice, and he’ll be back in the mix. There’s only so many guys that get a jersey on gameday, you have to have a role to be up like the other guys this week.”

Clark won the starting job opposite Marco Wilson coming out of the preseason.

After playing almost every defensive snap for the first four games, he saw his playing time decrease until last week he suited up but did not play at all and yesterday he was not even active.

Gannon has praised Clark’s mentality and ability to bounce back from adversity. We will see over the next few weeks if he can climb his way back into the defensive rotation.
