Former Trojan Kedon Slovis named BYU starting QB for 2023 season opener

Kedon Slovis tries to make a memorable and significant contribution to #BYU, a school which is known for producing great QBs.

Former USC Trojan and Pittsburgh Panther quarterback Kedon Slovis has officially been named the starting signal caller at BYU for the upcoming season.

BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick announced the news last week.

“Kedon is our starter, and I want to make that clear,” said Roderick. “We put him in a position to earn that job, and he’s lived up to what we expected up to this point. So he’ll go into fall camp as our starting quarterback. And as long as he continues to do what I expect him to do, I expect he will be our starting quarterback in the first game.”

Max Hall, Riley Nelson, Taysom Hill, Tanner Mangum, Zach Wilson and Jaren Hall are the names who have come before Slovis in the past 15 years of BYU football. The Cougars, in their long and storied football history, have produced quarterbacks who have since become Heisman Trophy winners (Ty Detmer), Super Bowl champions (Jim McMahon and Steve Young), and important figures in the sport of football (Steve Sarkisian).

BYU is a quarterback factory. Slovis will add his name to that list this year as he tries to have a bounce-back senior season.

During Slovis’s four-year career in college football, he has passed for 9,973 yards, 68 touchdowns, and 33 interceptions and has completed 65.9% of his pass attempts.

Slovis will get his first start at BYU on September 2 versus Sam Houston State at home in Provo, Utah.

Kedon Slovis transfers to BYU

Kedon Slovis will be a #Big12 QB in 2023 at #BYU. We wish him the best.

Where was Kedon Slovis going to land after he announced his decision to transfer from the University of Pittsburgh? We now have our answer.

Slovis transferred to BYU on Christmas Eve, giving the Cougars their new quarterback for 2023 and their move to the Big 12.

You know the story with Slovis: He had a promising 2019 freshman season at USC under Clay Helton and Graham Harrell, but then shoulder problems got in the way of his 2020 season. He clearly did not (could not) throw the ball with maximum zip. His 2021 season was also affected by injuries.

He transferred to Pitt for the 2022 season, and was negatively affected by the fact that Jordan Addison, a Pitt receiver, transferred out of the program and came to USC to play with Caleb Williams. Slovis lacked the elite, game-changing receiver who would have made his life a lot easier. Now Slovis is headed for Provo. We wish him the very best in 2023 and beyond:

Potential landing spots for former USC QB Kedon Slovis

.@DonJamesSports looks at potential destinations for Kedon Slovis, who has a lot of intriguing options laid out before him in the portal.

It appears Pittsburgh will have another new starting quarterback next season, and it’s a familiar face.

The former Trojan Kedon Slovis — “Captain Slovis” — is officially out as Pittsburgh quarterback.

A report surfaced earlier this week that Slovis intended to enter the NCAA transfer portal and skip Pitt’s upcoming Sun Bowl, less than a year after his January 2022 announcement that he would transfer to play for the Panthers.

Either Nick Patti, who is a redshirt senior, or redshirt freshman Nate Yarnell will be the Panthers’ quarterback for the Sun Bowl.

Former Notre Dame and Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec has transferred to Pitt to take over for Slovis, who will play for his third team in three years.

Which team will it be? Let’s take a look:

2022-23 Transfer Portal Tracker: Quarterback

The names are flying into the portal — stay up to date with them ALL right here!

What can landing a quarterback get you? Look no further than USC, which landed former prized recruit [autotag]Caleb Williams[/autotag] shortly after Lincoln Riley’s arrival a year ago. All the sophomore has done is lead USC’s charge to a possible College Football Playoff appearance by having a Heisman Trophy-worthy season.

After sitting through nearly an entire season of [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag], a few things are clear: He plays his heart out each time he’s on the field. He clearly loves Notre Dame. His teammates love him. And his ceiling simply isn’t high enough to help the Irish win big. Combine that with inexperience and injury issues to Notre Dame’s other quarterbacks, and it’s easy to see why the Irish appear headed to the portal to bring in a quarterback for 2023.

Here is the updated list of quarterbacks who have entered the transfer portal since August. Some have chosen new programs; the vast majority have not.

Keep track of all the movement and names of potential quarterbacks for your favorite teams below.

Football scout Bill Carroll evaluates J.T. Daniels, Kedon Slovis, and Jaxson Dart

Football scouting analyst @ElevenBravo138 evaluated 3 former #USC QBs who are playing for other college teams.

USC has had some great quarterback play over the years. Rodney Peete, Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, Matt Barkley, John David Booty, Sam Darnold, and now future Heisman candidate Caleb Williams are part of the Trojans’ legacy under center.

USC has had the highest ranked recruits at the position in the recruiting ranking era. It continues the tradition with Caleb Williams and four-star backup Miller Moss.

We chatted about some former USC Trojan signal-callers and Williams’ Heisman odds for 2022.

Trojans Wire: What did you think of former USC quarterbacks J.T. Daniels of West Virginia and Kedon Slovis of Pittsburgh in the Backyard Brawl duel on Sept. 1?

Bill Carroll: I think both showed well Thursday night in the rivalry, but Slovis has the slightly better total situation as seen with their win. I think J.T Daniels may have more pass attempts and perhaps more yards and touchdowns during the season, but Kedon Slovis will have more team success and more yards per attempt.

Trojans Wire: Will Jaxson Dart, another former Trojan quarterback, make an impact for Ole Miss and Lane Kiffin this season?

Bill Carroll: I think that all of the things Matthew Anthony Corral did in that uber fun Kiffin offense are things that Jaxson Chase Dart is capable of doing. My question is can he stay healthy the full season.

Trojans Wire: Vegas odds have QB Caleb Williams as 4th in the preseason Heisman poll, do you see Williams as a favorite to be in NYC in December?

Bill Carroll: My current Heisman top 4 are: Will Anderson, Jr., Bijan Robinson, C.J. Stroud, and Bryce Young, with Caleb Williams just missing a trip to New York.

Kedon Slovis beats J.T. Daniels again on a weird, complicated night for USC fans

J.T. Daniels was luckless when he got hurt at USC and replaced by Kedon Slovis. On Thursday, Daniels was beaten by Slovis in a different way. It was a fascinating night.

USC fans wondered what would happen when two former Trojan quarterbacks, one of them guided by a former USC offensive coordinator who coached both men in 2019, faced each other on the gridiron.

What they saw on Thursday night in Pittsburgh’s 38-31 win over West Virginia looked awfully familiar.

Kedon Slovis was on the run. The Pitt quarterback got sacked several times due to his offensive line not blocking well for him. The team Slovis played for was soft and generally got shoved around, particularly in the second half. Kedon Slovis’s team didn’t make great third-quarter coaching adjustments.

Yes, it looked very familiar from that side of the field.

As for J.T. Daniels, he was beaten by Kedon Slovis again. In 2019, he was beaten by Slovis when he got hurt, and Slovis played well in place of him. Daniels lost his roster spot and transferred to Georgia. On Thursday, Daniels lost to Slovis on the scoreboard.

How Daniels lost was beyond belief. He threw a perfect pass to his receiver, and it turned into a winning touchdown for Pittsburgh and Slovis:

J.T. Daniels remains a luckless quarterback.

Kedon Slovis scored a victory which recalled the 2020 USC season.

Slovis had to scramble to win a few games in the shortened 2020 pandemic season. He led USC to multiple fourth-quarter comebacks in 2020, including against the two Arizona schools. This game felt like the Arizona and Arizona State games from USC’s 2020 season on several levels. The coaching certainly wasn’t very good; that’s a clear connection with Clay Helton.

USC fans watching this game certainly recognized the parallels with the Helton era. The good part for Trojan fans: This wasn’t an actual USC game, so the blood pressure levels and personally invested emotions were not part of this particular football-watching experience.

It’s likely to be a very different year of watching USC football in 2022.

J.T. Daniels outplays Kedon Slovis in first half of West Virginia-Pittsburgh

J.T. Daniels was good, Kedon Slovis was average. Graham Harrell was Graham Harrell. “The Ex-USC Trojans Bowl” is a close one.

With USC hosting Rice in Week 1, with temperatures soaring in Southern California, the really interesting opening-week game for a lot of Trojan fans is not even on Saturday. It’s the West Virginia-Pittsburgh Thursday night prime-time special.

Former USC quarterbacks J.T. Daniels of the Mountaineers and Kedon Slovis of the Panthers are going against each other. Graham Harrell, who was the offensive coordinator for both quarterbacks at USC in 2019, is West Virginia’s offensive coordinator now.

We will see how the second half goes in Pittsburgh, but the first half went to Daniels if we are comparing performances.

Daniels went 14 of 20 for 106 yards and one touchdown. Slovis completed 6 of 8 passes for 84 yards. He threw a pass which was caught by a West Virginia defender, but out of bounds, so he was lucky to avoid an interception. Daniels was also lucky to avoid a pick in the first half, but that was because he was hammered as he released a pass.

Daniels threw this beautiful touchdown pass in a first half in which he dropped the ball in the bucket on a consistent basis:

Daniels also made this improvised play after dropping a shotgun snap:

WVU and Pitt are tied at 10 at the half.

Pittsburgh QB Kedon Slovis trashing West Virginia won’t do much to change outcome of Backyard Brawl

Pittsburgh’s Kedon Slovis got the party started early.

There’s only one guarantee I’m willing to make about the Week 1 game between West Virginia and Pittsburgh: it’ll get ugly.

Affectionately known as the Backyard Brawl, this long-time rivalry between schools just 75 miles apart will resume Thursday night after an 11-year hiatus. It’s already apparent the time apart did nothing to cool the fire between the sides — Pittsburgh quarterback Kedon Slovis had some not-so-nice things to say about the team in Morgantown.

A transfer from USC, Slovis was likely emboldened by playing on the favored side in this matchup. His 17th-ranked Panthers are favored by 7.5 points with -340 odds on their moneyline at Tipico Sportsbook.

Slovis might also have a little friendly rivalry with the quarterback on the other side, JT Daniels, a Georgia transfer and Slovis’ former teammate with the Trojans who once beat him for a starting job. I think Slovis channels that energy into a solid game and helps Pitt cover the spread. WVU can be mad about what he said, but it won’t matter.

The Panthers are returning a good amount of starters from a defense that was sixth in the nation against the run in 2021. If they can continue that type of play against a West Virginia team now without Leddie Brown, they can force the Mountaineers to be one-dimensional and make Daniels’ job a little more difficult. That could make all the difference in the spread.

However, Daniels won’t be completely shut down. Which is why I also like for this game to go over 51.5 points. He’s been around awhile and has played plenty in the past. Pittsburgh’s secondary isn’t exactly the Legion of Boom. West Virginia will score a little, so a Pitt cover means the game finishes with a final of around 33-24.

NFL Draft preview: Pittsburgh Panthers top prospects

Never too early for NFL draft prep. Prospect preview: Pittsburgh Panthers top prospects for Week One from @joshkeatley16:

Welcome to the college football season.

We had an exciting week zero which included all three of the prospects that I highlighted from Nebraska having terrible games and playing a huge role in the giant Northwestern upset, but we are back for week one with three more prospects from one school that I will be paying close attention to.

Thursday night at 7:00 PM, the Pittsburgh Panthers will be defending their home turf against the West Virginia Mountaineers. Everyone is eagerly waiting to see what the #17 Pittsburgh Panthers put together after such an electric season in 2021.

They have a few studs on offense that could be great fits in Cleveland as well.

Here are three prospects from Pitt to watch Thursday night:

The other preseason poll ranking which shows how much USC is being discounted

Kedon Slovis was poorly coached by Clay Helton. That’s not his fault. Yet, he inherits a Pitt team without Jordan Addison, who is at USC. Pitt is only 3 spots behind the Trojans? Wow.

The Pittsburgh Panthers are No. 17 in the preseason edition of the Associated Press college football poll.

A lot of USC fans will immediately note the significance of that fact, but let’s be clear so that everyone knows what this means: It means USC is not highly respected.

USC came in at No. 14 in the poll, a mere three spots ahead of Pitt. That’s not a lot of daylight between the two teams.

Yet, USC is quarterbacked by Caleb Williams. Pittsburgh is quarterbacked by Kedon Slovis, who — through little fault of his own — has had a tough two-year period. He didn’t get quality coaching under Clay Helton at USC. He didn’t have full health, either. The hope is that at Pittsburgh, he will be fully healthy, in which case he should indeed be better than he was in either 2020 or 2021. Yet, Slovis’s outlook is uncertain. Caleb Williams is a star with a chance to attain superstardom this year at USC. His ceiling is extremely high, and he is a legitimate Heisman Trophy contender.

That’s point number one. USC has a big advantage at quarterback.

Second, Pitt roared to life last year under quarterback Kenny Pickett and offensive coordinator Mark Whipple. Both are gone. Pickett is in the NFL and Whipple is now at Nebraska under Scott Frost.

Third, and probably most important, is that Jordan Addison — a central engine of the 2021 Pitt offense who helped the Panthers win the ACC championship for the first time in school history — transferred to USC. Pitt didn’t just lose Addison; USC gained him.

With all of this happening, one might think USC should be 10 or 12 spots ahead of Pitt in the preseason polls, but no, it’s only three.

It’s pretty clear that poll voters think the transfer of Jordan Addison only slightly affects the comparison between USC and Pitt. Voters obviously think Pitt has a much better roster from top to bottom at all positions. This is an indirect but noticeable and forceful verdict of skepticism about the USC defense and the full roster Lincoln Riley has assembled.

It’s just another indication of how much national skepticism the Trojans face as they prepare for a highly-anticipated season of football.
