Former USC quarterback Kedon Slovis is selected in 2024 UFL draft

Kedon Slovis gets a pro football opportunity.

Former BYU football quarterback Kedon Slovis heard his name called in the 2024 UFL draft. At USC Kedon Slovis replaced J.T. Daniels his freshman season but then was sidelined by an injury and was replaced by Jaxson Dart. Clay Helton was fired in 2021. Then Lincoln Riley was brought in with Caleb Williams in the 2021-2022 offseason. Slovis then transferred to Pitt and eventually BYU.

Slovis threw for 11,689 yards in his five years as a college quarterback at USC, Pitt, and BYU.

Last year at BYU, Slovis passed for 1,716 yards in eight starts before missing the final four games due to injury.

Slovis was the third quarterback selected in the UFL draft and was the 12th overall pick. The first two quarterbacks in front of him were Jason Bean of Kansas, who went No. 1, and UCF’s John Rhys Plumlee, who went third overall.

Slovis was signed by the Indianapolis Colts this past April as an undrafted rookie following the 2024 NFL draft.

The UFL celebrated its inaugural season this past spring after the USFL and XFL merged. The draft pool available to UFL teams included only undrafted players from the 2024 class.

Colts’ QB Kedon Slovis selected 12th overall in UFL draft

Colts’ quarterback Kedon Slovis was selected in the second-round of the 2024 UFL college draft. Here’s what you need to know.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Kedon Slovis was selected by the DC Defenders in the second round of the UFL college draft on Wednesday.

Slovis was signed by the Colts this past April as an undrafted rookie out of BYU following the 2024 NFL draft.

The UFL celebrated its inaugural season this past spring after the USFL and XFL merged. The draft pool available to UFL teams included only undrafted players from the 2024 class.

Slovis comes to the NFL as an experienced college quarterback, having spent three seasons at UCS, the 2022 season with Pittsburgh and the most recent season at BYU.

Slovis had an impressive 2019 season with USC, bursting on the scene as he completed 72 percent of his throws at 8.9 yards per attempt with 30 touchdowns to just nine interceptions.

After that season, however, Slovis’ production would never get back to that level. In 2023, he completed 57 percent of his passes at 7.6 yards per attempt with 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

“It’s a lot that has happened,’’ Slovis said when meeting with reporters. “Got to play at three different schools over five years. I try to see optimistically (that) I got three completely different experiences and got to play five years of college football.

“Seen some really good, seen some adversity. I’ve seen it all, but grateful for it, and I’ve put that behind me. I’m just trying to make the most of this opportunity.’’

The first two spots on the Colts’ quarterback depth chart are set with Anthony Richardson healthy and starting and Joe Flacco as the backup. Whether or not the Colts roster a third quarterback–for what it’s worth, they did in 2023–remains to be seen, but Slovis will be competing with Sam Ehlinger and Jason Bean for that role.

Along with Slovis getting selected in the UFL draft, Bean was the first overall selection.

Although Slovis was drafted by the DC Defenders, he is still on the Colts’ roster with Indianapolis holding his contract rights. The upcoming UFL season won’t begin until next spring, at which point Slovis could have another option depending on how this season goes for him and as long as he’s not under contract with an NFL team.

Broncos met with QB Kedon Slovis at the Shrine Bowl

The Broncos met with BYU quarterback Kedon Slovis at the East-West Shrine Bowl. He’s likely being considered as an UDFA prospect.

The Denver Broncos spent “extended time” with BYU quarterback Kedon Slovis at the East-West Shrine Bowl earlier this offseason, according to The Draft Network’s Ryan Fowler.

Slovis (6-2, 223 pounds) was considered a promising prospect after he threw for 3,502 yards and 30 touchdowns as a freshman at USC in 2019. Unfortunately, he never managed to return to that level of production.

After a season shortened by COVID-19 in 2020, Slovis returned in 2021 and threw for 2,153 yards with 11 touchdowns against eight interceptions. He then transferred to Pitt in 2022.

In one year with the Panthers, Slovis threw for 2,397 yards with 10 touchdowns against nine interceptions. He transferred again in 2023, moving to BYU ahead of his final college season.

Slovis totaled 1,716 passing yards with 12 touchdowns against six interceptions in eight games with the Cougars last fall. He wrapped up his college career with a 64.5% completion percentage, 11,689 passing yards, 80 touchdowns and 39 interceptions.

A five-year starter in college, Slovis is now entering the NFL draft as a 23-year-old prospect. The Broncos are likely considering him as an undrafted free agent prospect.

The 2024 NFL draft will be held in Detroit from April 25-27. We are tracking all of Denver’s pre-draft prospect visits on Broncos Wire.

Kedon Slovis impresses everyone with speedy NFL combine time

Kedon Slovis has wheels, in case you might have forgotten.

Former USC Trojan quarterback Kedon Slovis was the most impressive quarterback in the third tier (projected Day 3) of gunslingers in Indianapolis this weekend.

Slovis garnered widespread attention for his 40-yard dash time. He finished with an elite 4.55-second time to rank first among all participating quarterbacks.

Slovis’s time ranked 65th out if the 321 players who attended the NFL combine this year.

A number of other notable quarterbacks at the combine declined to participate in the 40-yard dash, including projected first-round talents Caleb Williams, Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels.

Slovis also posted a 1.58-second 10-yard split time along with a 30-inch vertical leap and 9-feet, 10-inch broad jump.

In the actual quarterbacking drills, Slovis made a number of impressive throws on different short, intermediate and deep routes to earn praise from the NFL Network broadcast crew.

Slovis started eight games for BYU in 2023, throwing for 1,716 yards and 12 touchdowns to earn five victories before shoulder and elbow concerns sidelined him for the rest of the season. Across five years at USC, Pitt, and with the Cougars, Slovis racked up 11,689 passing yards, 83 total scores and a 140.6 quarterback rating. He earned Pac-12 Freshman of the Year honors in 2019 along with a First Team All-Pac-12 nod in 2020, both with the Trojans.

Slovis currently projects to be either a seventh-round draft selection or an undrafted free agent.

Former USC QB Kedon Slovis is invited to the NFL scouting combine

Kedon Slovis gets his big chance to make an impression on NFL evaluators.

Kedon Slovis has been named one of the 14 quarterbacks invited to the NFL scouting combine. The former USC Trojan, who went to Pitt and then ended his collegiate career as a BYU Cougar, will try to get on the board as a Day 3 pick for the upcoming 2024 NFL draft. It isn’t realistic for him to expect a Day 2 draft spot.

Slovis was sidelined for the final four games of the 2023 season due to multiple injuries on his throwing arm. He finished his one season at BYU with 1,716 passing yards, 12 touchdowns, six interceptions, and a completion rate of 57.5%.

At USC Kedon Slovis replaced J.T. Daniels but then was sidelined by an injury and was replaced by Jaxson Dart. Clay Helton was fired in 2021. Lincoln Riley was brought in with Caleb Williams in the 2021-2022 offseason. Slovis transferred to Pitt and then BYU. It has been a wild ride.

If drafted, Slovis would be the third consecutive BYU starting quarterback to be selected in the NFL, following Zach Wilson and Jaren Hall.

Former USC QB accepts East-West Shrine Bowl invitation

Kedon Slovis prepares for his big moment.

BYU quarterback Kedon Slovis accepted an invitation to play in the East-West Shrine Bowl. Slovis, who spent only one year at BYU after playing for USC and Pitt, threw for nearly 12,000 yards in his five-year college career.

Slovis finished the 2023 season with 1,716 passing yards and 12 touchdowns to 6 interceptions in eight starts, going 5-3.

“[Kedon Slovis] is one of most naturally accurate passers in the 2024 class. When we talk to NFL scouts, they love his ball placement on midrange throws that are so critical in pro game. The NFL is all about fitting ball into tight windows and Slovis has that skill,” said Jim Nagy, the director of the Senior Bowl.

If drafted, Slovis would be the third consecutive BYU starting quarterback to be selected in the NFL draft, following Zach Wilson and Jaren Hall. Slovis has carved out a long and winding path which has taken him from USC to Pittsburgh to BYU, and now to the pre-draft events in which he gets a big chance to make a significant impression on scouts and evaluators. We wish Kedon Slovis the best as he pursues his NFL dream.

No. 13 Oklahoma Sooners vs BYU Cougars: How to Watch, key players, weather forecast for gameday

Here is what you need to know ahead of the Oklahoma Sooners road trip to face the BYU Cougars.

The Oklahoma Sooners are set to travel to Provo, Utah, to take on the [autotag]BYU Cougars[/autotag] for the one and only time as conference foes.

The Cougars hold a 2-0 lead over the Sooners all time. Both wins have been in neutral site games.

After starting 3-0, including a win over Arkansas, the Cougars have lost five of their last seven and three straight. Quarterback [autotag]Kedon Slovis[/autotag] hasn’t played in the last two games and is questionable to play against the Sooners.

The Cougars have the No. 103 defense and the No. 123 offense in the country. The one thing they are good at is forcing turnovers. That’s something the Sooners struggled with in their two losses. BYU ranks No. 18 in the country in turnovers forced. They also rank No. 31 in turnover margin.

The game will be simple. The Sooners will win handily if they don’t turn the ball over or are heavily penalized. The weather could play a factor, so let’s take a look at some things you need to know about the game.

Voice of the BYU Cougars, Greg Wrubell, explains how the Cougars can pull off an upset

The voice of the BYU Cougars discusses what BYU needs to do to pull off the upset.

It’s almost that time for the Oklahoma Sooners and the [autotag]BYU Cougars[/autotag] to play in Provo, UT. It’s crazy to think Oklahoma is about to play their 11th game of the season.

This game is set to kick off at /11:00 a.m. CT, 10:00 a.m. MT. The exact kickoff time will be 10:07 a.m. MT which, according to OU’s Associate AD for Strategic Communications Mike Houck, is the earliest known kickoff in program history.

All signs point to an Oklahoma win on Saturday. BYU ranks in the 100s on both sides of the ball. They’ve been reeling recently, suffering three straight blowout losses. But as we’ve seen, Oklahoma can be beaten, especially if they don’t come in focused or turn the ball over.

I interviewed the voice of the BYU Cougars, Greg Wrubell, on my podcast, Eat. Sleep. Bedlam., about how important the turnover battle will be on Saturday.

“In the Kalani Sitake era, when BYU has a positive turnover margin, the win rate is 81.4%, 35-8,” Wrubell said. “When they go turnover-free, which you can do, in fact, Aaron Roderick’s teams have probably been turnover-free in about half of his games as OC (offensive coordinator), Kalani’s teams are 29-4 when they just don’t turn the ball over.”

The Cougars started this season with a lot of promise at 3-0. Since then, injuries have really plagued the Cougars. It’s unclear if they will get back starting quarterback [autotag]Kedon Slovis[/autotag]. One of their preseason starting safeties, who was hurt in camp, did make his return last week but only on a limited basis.

Wrubell said for them to pull off the upset, they need to get back to the three areas that helped them have their fast start. Win the turnover margin, be efficient in the red zone, and win the starting field position battle. All things they’ve struggled with recently.

For the Sooners, they simply can’t beat themselves in this game. Turnovers and penalties are what will make this close in a game they shouldn’t have a problem winning.

Know Your Foe: BYU Cougars to know ahead of Oklahoma’s final Big 12 road game

Taking a look at Cougars to know ahead of Oklahoma’s matchup with BYU in Utah on Saturday.

Oklahoma will play its last road game as a Big 12 member on Saturday. Brent Venables leads his team to scenic Provo, Utah, where they take on the [autotag]BYU Cougars[/autotag] as they scrap to keep their Big 12 title hopes alive.

For Oklahoma (8-2, 5-2 Big 12), it’s somewhat funny that their last road game as a founding Big 12 member will come against one of the conference’s newest additions. However, the mission remains the same: win.

BYU (5-5, 2-5) is looking to get that signature win and, most importantly, clinch bowl eligibility. Motivation won’t be lacking for either team. BYU has had a very up-and-down season, mirroring how Oklahoma looked at some points last year.

The Cougars have some talented pieces, but it’ll take those players and a nearly flawless game to beat Oklahoma on Saturday. How does BYU stack up? Who are their playmakers and difference makers? We’ve covered that below as we break down some BYU Cougars to know ahead of the game.

Kedon Slovis has bounce-back game for BYU before Arkansas test next week

Slovis and BYU will get a real challenge from @RazorbacksWire next weekend.

BYU quarterback Kedon Slovis is trying to start fresh. The former USC Trojan and Pittsburgh Panther bounced back in a big way after Week 1’s mediocre outing against Sam Houston. Slovis threw for 348 yards and four touchdowns in a 41-16 win over Southern Utah on Saturday at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Slovis completed 22 of 32 passes with one interception. The 348 passing yards was the ninth-most in his 40 career starts. His passer rating of 195.1 was the sixth-best of his career.

This is the kind of performance Kedon was capable of early in his college career, when he replaced J.T. Daniels at USC. When he signed with the Cougars last December, BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick believed he could help Slovis return to his productive form. Slovis and BYU are now 2-0. They will get their first huge test on the road versus Arkansas in Fayetteville on Saturday. It will be a measuring stick for Slovis in his evolution as a quarterback.
