Keaton Mitchell of the Ravens is the NFL’s new big-play running back

Baltimore Ravens undrafted rookie Keaton Mitchell has become the NFL’s most explosive running back. Who would have thought it?

The Baltimore Ravens were able to steal East Carolina’s Keaton Mitchell as an undrafted free agent after the 2023 NFL draft was over. Despite the fact that Mitchell accounted for 31 runs of 15 or more yards for 838 yards in his final season with the Pirates, and wasn’t just based on straight-line speed — he also forced 75 missed tackles, which was pretty good for a 5-foot-8, 179-pound back.

Those size concerns left Mitchell undrafted, and this was clearly a case where NFL teams should have looked beyond the obvious. Because in Baltimore’s do-it-all offense, Mitchell has all of a sudden become the league’s most prominent purveyor of big plays on the ground.

Mitchell had his first rushing attempts of the season in Baltimore’s 37-3 beatdown of the Seattle Seahawks last Sunday, and he came though in a big way, with 138 yards, a touchdown, and an astonishing 15.3 yards per carry average. Two of those runs were for 15+ yards, and he broke eight tackles along the way, so Mitchell played to type all the way.

He blew Seattle’s defense up for a 40-yard run…

…and a 60-yard scamper.

Against the Cleveland Browns’ usually estimable defense, Mitchell was right back at it, singeing the Browns with this 32-yard gain on a screen pass…

…and this 39-yard touchdown run.

So now, it’s just a bunch of 30-plus-yard plays, which is nice work if you can get it.

“I just approach every week the same,” Mitchell said in the week leading up to the Browns game. “Work hard, come out here, watch film and really just prepare. Every team is a good team. This is the NFL. This isn’t college anymore, so [I] come out here [and] bust my tail every day.”

So far, it’s working like a charm in the Charm City.

Ravens vs. Browns: 6 stats that define Cleveland’s 5-3 start

We’re lookingat six stats that define the Cleveland Browns 5-3 start ahead of the Week 10 matchup against the Balitmore Ravens

The Ravens and Browns are set for a heated Week 10 matchup at M&T Bank Stadium that could add some separation to the AFC North race.

All four teams in the division would be playoff-bound if the tournament started today, and a Baltimore win could begin to put them into the AFC driver’s seat as teams work to get the home-field advantage and the bye week that comes with the top spot.

With kickoff now just 24 hours away, here are six stats that define Cleveland’s hot start.

Ravens vs. Browns: 5 matchups to watch when Baltimore is on defense

We’re looking at five matchups to watch when the Baltimore Ravens are on defense against the Cleveland Browns offense

The Ravens and Browns are headed for a heavyweight showdown featuring two of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL and the two best defensive units on the planet.

Cleveland edge rusher Myles Garrett has talked the talk this week, and a significant reason stems from a dominant defense that’s been outstanding outside of a few letdown performances.

The Ravens also have a stout defense and allowed their fewest yards in five years when they held the Seattle Seahawks to 151 yards in a 37-3 victory.

Baltimore leads the league in points allowed (13.8), the lowest number this far into a season since its 2000 Super Bowl-winning defense.

Ravens vs. Browns: Marlon Humphrey, Keaton Mitchell added to Thursday injury report

Marlon Humphrey, Keaton Mitchell added to Thursday injury report ahead of matchup vs. Cleveland Browns

The Ravens (7-2) enter the Week 10 matchup against the Cleveland Browns as an elite team that’s getting healthy, but Thursday provided a scare.

Cornerback Marlon Humphrey (hamstring), running back Keaton Mitchell (hamstring), and wide receiver Rashod Bateman (back) were all limited participants in the second practice of the week.

Defensive tackle Michael Pierce (illness) did not practice for a second straight day, while cornerback Jalyn Armour-Davis (illness) also did not practice.

The news is concerning for Mitchell, who is coming off a breakout performance in which he had 138 yards and a touchdown on nine carries in Sunday’s blowout win over the Seattle Seahawks.

The injury designation comes after Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken said that the undrafted rookie out of East Carolina had earned more playing time after he missed the early part of the season with a shoulder injury suffered in the preseason.

Humphrey has returned to his Pro Bowl form, while Michael Pierce has been stout at defensive tackle.

For the Browns (5-3), wide receiver Marquise Goodwin (concussion) and rookie offensive tackle Dawand Jones (knee/shoulder) did not participate for a second day in a row. Wide receiver David Bell (knee) also did not practice.

Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson (shoulder), offensive lineman Nick Harris (toe), and safety Grant Delpit (shoulder) fully practiced for the second straight day.

Fantasy Football: Waiver-wire targets for Week 10

We take a look across the league and help fantasy owners navigate the waiver wire heading into Week 10.

It was an exciting and interesting Week 9, where we saw some new names enter into our collective fantasy football minds. Injuries and breakout stars are going to send fantasy managers scrambling to waivers this week, and we can full you in on who to target before waivers clear.

Ravens rank No. 1 in rush yards per game in the NFL

After the 298 total rush yard output, the Baltimore Ravens now rank No.1 in the NFL in rush yards per game.

Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken committed 41 play calls to running the ball in week 9.  After the 298 total rush yard output, the Ravens now rank No.1 in the NFL in rush yards per game.

Criticism for Monken’s play calling were merited after week 8. As discussed previously, too many pass plays led to short Ravens drives and coverage sacks vs. Arizona. Monken must’ve taken note.

Versus Seattle, the Ravens ruled the time of possession 40:06 to 19:56 and converted 29 first downs. Consequently, long offensive drives led by establishing the run allowed a well-rested Ravens defense to unleash the pass rush.

An incredible performance by undrafted running back Keaton Mitchell gives even more incentive for the Ravens to focus in on the ground-game moving forward. Mitchell had 138 rush yards on nine carries, including a  60-yard fourth quarter run that was the dagger for the Seahawks.

Quarterback Lamar Jackson was also optimized in the ground game, turning his 10 rush attempts into 60-yards. Ultimately, when Monken sticks with the run, the Ravens become a overall very dangerous team.

Ravens PFF grades: Best and worst performers from 37-3 win over Seahawks

We’re looking at the highest and lowest graded performers in the Baltimore Ravens 37-3 win over the Seattle Seahawks

The Ravens were looking to make a statement on Sunday, and the Baltimore defense dominated a potent Seattle offense all afternoon.

John Harbaugh’s team held a 17-3 first-half lead after sacking Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith four times in the first half.

Baltimore went on to score 20 more unanswered points while another offensive weapon broke out in a significant way.

With another massive matchup against Cleveland looming, we’re looking at the highest and lowest-graded players from Sunday’s win via PFF.

Ravens RB Keaton Mitchell has breakout game vs Seahawks

Keaton Mitchell was an undrafted free agent out of East Carolina.

Going into Sunday’s game, Baltimore Ravens running back Keaton Mitchell had only played two snaps all season. But against the Seattle Seahawks, Mitchell, an undrafted rookie out of East Carolina made the most of the 12 snaps he got with a huge breakout performance.

Mitchell finished the game with nine carries on those 12 snaps and racked up a monumental 138 rushing yards. He had a 60-yard run and a 40-yard run with the latter going for a touchdown in the blowout win.

Mitchell had a stellar career at East Carolina. In 2022, Mitchell rushed for 1,452 yards and 14 rushing touchdowns. In three seasons, Mitchell rushed for 3,027 yards and 25 touchdowns. For his career, Mitchell averaged 6.5 yards per carry. The Ravens are a team always on the hunt for talent at running back to take some pressure off of quarterback Lamar Jackson.  Mitchell’s speed and explosion give defenses a different look than Gus Edwards and Sunday’s performance should earn him more touches going forward.
