5 takeaways from Seattle’s humiliating 37-3 loss to Baltimore

5 takeaways from Seattle’s humiliating 37-3 loss to Baltimore

Sunday’s 37-3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens is almost as bad as it could have been for the Seattle Seahawks. No, that isn’t hyperbole, as this 34-point defeat ties a 41-7 beatdown in 2010 as the second worst defeat(s) Seattle has suffered in the Pete Carroll era.

When a team has a calamitous failure like this, it’s hard to narrow the reasons why to any one aspect, but a few certainly stand out more than others. In this week’s takeaways list, there’s plenty to mention. Unfortunately, there won’t be a ton of positive notes for me to choose from.

Simply put, the Seahawks were soundly humiliated. I could leave it there, and many might prefer it left that way. But for a little more digging, here are the biggest takeaways from Sunday’s disasterclass.

Instant analysis of Ravens dominating 37-3 win over Seahawks in Week 9

We’re looking at instant analysis of the Baltimore Ravens dominant 37-3 win over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 9

The Ravens were looking to make a statement on Sunday, and the Baltimore defense dominated a potent Seattle offense all afternoon.

John Harbaugh’s team held a 17-3 first-half lead after sacking Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith four times in the first half.

Baltimore went on to score 20 more unanswered points, while another offensive weapon broke out in a major way.

With a huge rematch against Cleveland slated for next week, here’s an instant analysis of the win.

Who is Ravens rookie running back Keaton Mitchell?

Keaton Mitchell has family history with the Ravens

Keaton Mitchell had no NFL carries coming into the Baltimore Ravens’ game with the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

Forgive Pete Carroll’s team for being unprepared for what they couldn’t hit.

Mitchell, an undrafted rookie from East Carolina, had his first nine NFL carries and gained 138 yards with time still left in the fourth quarter of the Ravens’ romp.

So, who is Mitchell? Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar had his eyes on the running back early.

Mitchell led all running backs in this class last season with 31 runs of 15 or more yards for 838 yards, and that’s not just based on straight-line speed — he also forced 75 missed tackles, which is pretty good for a 5-foot-8, 179-pound back. Mitchell’s size will limit his NFL opportunities and might take him off some boards entirely, but it’s also tough to argue with tape like this, where he shows such contact balance, lateral agility, and burst in the open field.

Some facts about Mitchell:
  • Three-year lettermen  for the Pirates who started 26 of 33 games … Two-time First-Team All-American Athletic Conference selection (2021-22)
  • Had nine 100-yard rushing efforts in 2022 tying an ECU single-season record (Carlester Crumpler ’72)
  •  Sixteen of 60 career receptions went for 10 or more yards (seven for 20-plus).
  • Father Anthony starred at Westlake High School before playing collegiately at Tuskegee and earning a roster spot with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent in 2000 (was a reserve during the Ravens’ run to the Super Bowl championship).
  • Anthony entered the spotlight when he scooped up a blocked Al Del Greco field goal attempt and returned it 90 yards for a TD to break a 10-10 tie with the Tennessee Titans in a divisional playoff game that sparked a 24-10 win and paved the way to an NFL title …

Undrafted rookie Keaton Mitchell rolls for Ravens touchdown

Who was that rookie on a 40-yard TD run for the Ravens?

There is zero chance anyone had Keaton Mitchell on their Fantasy Football team. And that’s too bad.

The undrafted rookie from East Carolina showed he is another gem in the Baltimore Ravens offense.

Against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, Mitchell took a handoff and 40 yards later was in the end zone.

Mitchell and the Ravens were pummeling Seattle, 30-3, as the game headed to the final 15 minutes.

Ravens activate rookie RB Keaton Mitchell for Week 6 matchup vs. Titans

Baltimore #Ravens running back Keaton Mitchell will make his NFL debut on Sunday in London against the Tennessee Titans

The Ravens have struggled to produce explosive plays on offense, and the recipe for that problematic situation may have just returned to the lineup.

Baltimore is in London for a huge Saturday morning matchup against the Tennessee Titans, and rookie running back Keaton Mitchell will make his NFL debut.

The team just announced his addition to the 53-man roster.

Mitchell made the initial 53-man roster as an undrafted free agent out of East Carolina before being placed on injured reserve Aug. 31.

During the preseason, Mitchell averaged 6.0 yards per carry, and he will join Gus Edwards and Justice Hill in the running back rotation against Tennessee.

According to Pro Football Focus, Mitchell led the FBS last season with 54 runs of 10-plus yards, and he’ll provide that big play ability.

The Ravens are 3-1, sit atop the AFC North, and are set to have their most explosive running back return to the lineup in the next week or so.

According to The Athletic’s Jeff Zrebiec, rookie running back Keaton Mitchell will have his 21-day practice window activated on Wednesday, ahead of Sunday’s matchup at Pittsburgh.

Baltimore currently has Gus Edwards and Justice Hill in the backfield, with J.K. Dobbins on injured reserve rehabbing a torn Achilles.

The Ravens have promoted Melvin Gordon off the practice squad the past two weeks and could have a decision to make regarding a roster spot if he’s elevated a third time.

After April’s NFL draft, Baltimore added 18 undrafted free agents to the roster.

With one week of the preseason remaining, the Ravens currently have 14 undrafted free agents on the roster, with three or four who’ve made highlight plays, and have a solid chance to make the 53-man roster.

After two joint practices earlier last week, the Ravens and Commanders will close out the second week of the NFL preseason with an intriguing matchup at FedEx Field.

Monday night’s contest could be a physical, hard-hitting affair after the practice sessions were marred by Washington rookie cornerback Emmanuel Forbes and Baltimore wide receiver Tylan Wallace exchanging punches.

With kickoff now five hours away, we’re looking at which undrafted free agents have the best shot at making the 53-man roster.
