Padres select Kavares Tears in 2024 MLB draft

San Diego selects former Vol Kavares Tears in the 2024 MLB draft.

Day No. 2 of the 2024 Major League Baseball draft is taking place on Monday in Fort Worth, Texas. The draft is being held in conjunction with MLB’s All-Star Game on Tuesday at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

Former Vol outfielder Kavares Tears was selected by San Diego (No. 134 overall) in the fourth-round.

Tears appeared in 100 games, including 83 starts, from 2023-24 at Tennessee. He redshirted during the 2022 season. The 6-foot, 200-pound outfielder recorded a .320 batting average, 22 home runs, 73 RBIs, 85 runs, 52 walks and four stolen bases.

Tears and the Vols won the national championship in 2024.

The MLB draft will conclude on Tuesday with rounds 11-20.

Auburn wins series opener against Vols

Auburn baseball wins series opener against Tennessee.

Auburn (18-11, 2-8 SEC) defeated Tennessee (24-6, 5-5 SEC), 9-5, on Friday at Plainsman Park in Auburn, Alabama.

Christian Moore started at second base for the Vols and went 2-for-5. He recorded a two-run home run, one double, two runs and two RBIs.

Kavares Tears also hit a two-run home run for Tennessee. He went 2-for-3 and totaled two RBIs and one run.

Tennessee first baseman Blake Burke went 3-for-4 and extended his hit streak to 20 games. He recorded one double, one run and one RBI.

AJ Causey (5-2) started for the Vols and took the loss and pitched 1.1 innings. He allowed eight hits and eight earned runs, while recording four strikeouts.

Ole Miss defeats Vols to tie series

Ole Miss baseball defeats the Vols to tie series.

Ole Miss (17-7, 3-2 SEC) defeated No. 7 Tennessee (20-4, 2-3 SEC), 8-5, Saturday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

The Rebels tied the Southeastern Conference series.

Hunter Ensley went 3-for-4 and recorded one home run, one double, two RBIs and one run for the Vols.

Blake Burke went 1-for-4, recoding one run and one stolen base, while Kavares Tears went 1-for-4 and recorded one run. Billy Amick went 1-for-4 and scored one run for Tennessee.

AJ Russell (0-1) pitched three innings and allowed four runs, two hits and six walks. He recorded three strikeouts for Tennessee.

Drew Beam started for the Vols and pitched 5.1 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) and six hits. He recorded five strikeouts.

No. 7 Tennessee (20-3, 2-2 SEC) defeated Ole Miss (16-7, 2-2), 15-3 in seven innings, on Friday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

Christian Moore went 2-for-4 and recorded two home runs, two RBIs and two runs, while Kavares Tears went 3-for-3 for the Vols. Tears recorded one home run, one double, two RBIs and four runs.

Designated hitter Robin Villeneuve went 3-for-4 and recorded one home run, four RBIs and three runs, while Dean Curley went 1-for-4 and totaled one home run, three RBIs and one run in Tennessee’s win.

AJ Causey (5-0) pitched 5.2 innings. He allowed three runs (two earned runs), five hits and two walks, while recording six strikeouts.

No. 6 Tennessee (18-1, 1-0 SEC) defeated No. 12 Alabama (15-3, 0-1 SEC), 11-3, Friday at Sewell-Thomas Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to open SEC play.

Friday’s win is Tennessee’s 17th consecutive.

Blake Burke went 3-for-5, recording one home run, three runs and two RBIs for Tennessee. Dylan Dreiling went 2-for-4 and totaled one home run, one triple, two runs and two RBIs for the Vols.

Billy Amick went 2-for-3 and scored two runs, while Kavares Tears went 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBIs for Tennessee.

Tennessee recorded 12 hits in the contest.

AJ Causey started and pitched 6.2 innings for the Vols. He allowed two runs, six hits and one walk, while recording eight strikeouts.

No. 8 Tennessee (1-0) defeated No. 22 Texas Tech (0-1), 6-2, Friday in the Shriners Children’s College Baseball Showdown at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, home of Major League Baseball’s Texas Rangers.

Rankings reflect the USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll.

Tennessee led, 2-0, after Billy Amick hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Hunter Ensley and Bradke Lohry also recorded RBIs for the Vols.

AJ Causey (1-0) pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless relief for Tennessee. He allowed two hits and recorded seven strikeouts.

AJ Russell started for the Vols and pitched 4.1 innings, allowing two earned runs, three hits and one walk. He totaled 10 strikeouts.

10,992 were in attendance at Globe Life Field.

2024 Tennessee baseball preview: Kavares Tears

Tennessee will open its 2024 season on Friday versus Texas Tech (8 p.m. EST) in the Shriners Children’s College Baseball Showdown presented by Kubota.

The Shriners Children’s College Baseball Showdown will take place at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, home of Major League Baseball’s Texas Rangers.

Tennessee, Baylor, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon and Texas Tech are part of the field. The Vols will also play Oklahoma on Saturday, while facing Baylor on Sunday.

Redshirt sophomore outfielder Kavares Tears enters his third season at Tennessee in 2024. He redshirted as a freshman during the 2021 campaign.

The 6-foot, 200-pound Tears has appeared in 29 games, including 14 starts, with the Vols, while recording a .304 batting average, two home runs, 11 RBIs, 12 runs, 17 hits, seven walks and zero stolen bases.

Tears has also recorded a 1.000 fielding position.

Tennessee’s Kavares Tears hits first home run with Walnut Creek Crawdads.

Tennessee freshman outfielder and first baseman Kavares Tears is playing in the California Collegiate League.

Tears debuted for the Walnut Creek Crawdads on June 12.

He hit his first home run June 14 against the Sonoma Stompers. The 6-foot, 200-pound Tears is 1-for-11 with one home run, one RBI, one run and one walk in four contests.

Tears redshirted during the 2022 season at Tennessee. He came to the Vols from Columbia Academy in Columbia, Tennessee.

Tennessee (57-9, 25-5 SEC) concluded its 2022 season on June 12.

The Vols advanced to the NCAA Tournament Super Regional and were ranked No. 1 in the USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll for 10 consecutive weeks (March 28-May 30).
