MSU head coach Harlon Barnett provides QB updates, avoids naming starter

MSU apparently knows who will be starting at quarterback this week but is not going to share that until Saturday

Michigan State apparently knows who will be starting at quarterback this week but is not going to share that until Saturday.

Head coach Harlon Barnett elected to not name a starting quarterback during his weekly press conference on Monday, but he did provide a somewhat notable update. Barnett said the team knows what they are going to do at that position when they take the field against Rutgers on Saturday.

Here’s how Graham Couch of the Lansing State Journal viewed Barnett’s update on Monday:

Noah Kim has started the first five games of the season but has struggled in the Spartans’ last three games — all of which they’ve lost. Kim has thrown six interceptions to only one touchdown in those three straight losses.

Kim’s struggles have resulted in many wanting the Spartans to switch things up and give freshman Katin Houser a chance at starting. Houser has appeared in only six career games and thrown 18 pass attempts.

Kickoff between Michigan State and Rutgers is scheduled for 12 p.m. ET on Saturday. The game will be televised on Big Ten Network.

LSJ’s Graham Couch: Time for MSU football to make a switch at QB

Is it time for the Spartans to make a change at quarterback?

If Michigan State wants to get anything out of this season, the Spartans need to make a change at quarterback. That’s at least what Graham Couch of the Lansing State Journal believes.

Starting quarterback Noah Kim had another shaky performance on Saturday, throwing three interceptions and failing to lead a touchdown drive in the loss at Iowa. It was a third straight tough performance for Kim, and it has many including Couch calling for a change in the starting position.

With a bye week coming up, it would make sense to make the switch now if the Spartans are going to make the change. Katin Houser is the backup who would be expected to step in as the starter.

Michigan State football interim head coach Harlon Barnett talks QB situation

Harlon Barnett talked about MSU’s QB situation after the loss to Maryland:

Michigan state football dropped a costly game against the Maryland Terrapins, mostly in part due to the five turnovers the Spartans committed in the contest. Of those five turnovers, two came by way of interceptions by Noah Kim, who also missed Montorie Foster on a touchdown by a clear overthrow.

The Spartans turned to redshirt freshman Katin Houser in the fourth quarter, who led a good drive but ultimately threw a pick inside the 5-yard line.

Barnett talked about the QB change, but further affirmed that Noah Kim was this team’s quarterback.

Fans and media will have to wait until the opening series to find out who will be the next MSU starting quarterback

Fans and media will have to wait until the opening series to find out who will be the next Michigan State starting quarterback.

Here’s Tucker’s response — which shouldn’t surprise any fans:

Noah Kim and Katin Houser are the two Spartans battling for the starting gig under center. Kim has long been considered the favorite to land the job but it appears we won’t know for sure until Friday.

Michigan State football’s QB battle is heating up

The trio of QB’s are jockeying for position in MSU’s ongoing QB battle

Jay Johnson took the stand for his spring press conference to talk all things MSU and give an update on the Spartans offense. Part of that update included the ongoing quarterback battle.

Payton Thorne is the returning starter and has been the starter the past two seasons, but longtime backup Noah Kim and 2022 four-star recruit Katin Houser are nipping at his heels to take over the starting quarterback position.

According to Jay Johnson, it appears the race is neck and neck, with all three QB’s getting equal reps and playing pretty evenly.

Stay tuned to Spartans Wire for updates on the ongoing QB battle in East Lansing.

MSU’s QBs complimented one another on BTN’s camp show in East Lansing on Tuesday:

One of the most covered topics surrounding Michigan State’s fall camp is the ongoing starting quarterback battle between Noah Kim and Katin Houser. That was a major piece of the conversation when the Big Ten Network crew joined the Spartans in East Lansing on Tuesday.

During Big Ten Network’s camp show, analyst Howard Griffith sat down with both quarterbacks vying for the job and discussed the competition, but started the conversation with the two complimenting one another.

You can watch the clip here:

One thing Spartan fans can be grateful for, the two quarterbacks within the competition are very supportive of each other and the competition is very healthy for the team.

LOOK: MSU football QB Katin Houser responds to Payton Thorne transfer

Katin Houser responded to fellow QB Payton Thorne’s transfer to Auburn

Payton Thorne has been the face of Michigan State’s program for the past two seasons, leading the Spartans into battle as the team’s starting quarterback. Unfortunately, Thorne made the decision to transfer to Auburn with a tough quarterback battle with Noah Kim and Katin Houser ongoing.

Houser took it upon himself to post a video on Twitter, thanking Thorne for his mentorship and wishing him the best of luck at Auburn.

Quality leadership shown by Houser, who is now competing with Noah Kim for Michigan State’s starting quarterback position.

Michigan State football QB Noah Kim comments on position battle with Payton Thorne and Katin Houser

Noah Kim comments on QB battle with Payton Thorne and Katin Houser

Michigan State football has had a quarterback battle sneak up on it since the end of last season. Before last season, it looked as though Payton Thorne was going to hold that position firmly until he decided to leave the program. However, a rocky season opened the door for some competition.

The main contender seems to be redshirt freshman Katin Houser. The former four-star recruit has had significant buzz this offseason, and offensive coordinator Jay Johnson confirmed as much a few weeks ago. However, all indications are that redshirt junior Noah Kim is still in the running for the starting job.

On Tuesday, Kim commented on the quarterback battle, saying simply: “Until that first game, it’s on.”

That’s exactly the type of fire and competition Mel Tucker has been looking to instill in this program, and it’s a good sign the Spartans have three guys who look like legit Big Ten quarterbacks.
