Celtics star wing Jaylen Brown to host tourney for Donda Academy at Morehouse

“It’s important resources are provided for these student-athletes,” wrote Brown, a longtime supporter of education.

In the wake of the fallout from Donda Academy’s founder Ye West’s antisemitic diatribes that threatened to shutter the school, star Boston Celtics wing Jaylen Brown has been making it his personal mission to ensure the students enrolled in the academy aren’t left out in the cold due to the acts of its founder.

Long a proponent of education, Brown — who himself left Donda Sports as his non-NBA talent representation agency in the wake of the West scandal — has organized a tournament for the Academy at Atlanta-area HBCU Morehouse College. “It’s important resources are provided for these student-athletes, not taken away,” write the Celtics star in a Twitter post on Saturday night.

“Shout out to (Morehouse) for opening their doors to host the Donda Doves’ official1st basketball game of the season. I need everyone in Atlanta to show love and support!,” he added. “I’ll be in attendance.”

The event in question, scheduled on Nov. 6 at 7:30 pm ET and slated to pit the Doves against TSF Basketball according to the event page, will be open to the public for a cost of $20, with a dress code that all in attendance wear all-black clothing.

Jaylen Brown offers to sponsor tournaments that will play Donda academy

The Celtics star is concerned the students enrolled there will be punished for Ye West’s antisemitic rants.

Star Boston Celtics wing Jaylen Brown might have fumbled his initial response to the antisemitic remarks of Ye West, the founder of Brown’s former talent agency in charge of his off-court business ventures, Donda Sports. But that did not mean he had plans to abandon the teens he connected with at the affiliated Donda Academy.

Brown took to Twitter on Friday to pledge his willingness to sponsor tourneys that would host the academy, stating “you do not cancel our kids” in reference to the fallout of West’s actions impacting the students who had enrolled at his academy.

At least four tournaments in Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, and North Carolina have disinvited the Donda Academy team.

At present, there are no plans to pull the plug on their season, set to begin on Nov. 3 against Minnesota Prep Academy at the Minnesota Shorty Classic at the Target Center in Minneapolis.

But Brown is concerned with more than just keeping the schools themselves open, noting his concern that students might get scholarships pulled for college as a result of the West scandal’s fallout.

Champion Celtics alum Ray Allen recirculates article on Auschwitz after Ye West’s antisemitic rants

Allen felt the need to repost his article on Auschwitz ‘in light of the rhetoric being spewed through the airwaves.’

On Wednesday, champion Boston Celtics alumnus Ray Allen felt compelled to re-share his article from 2017 on why he decided to visit Auschwitz, the infamous World War II concentration camp that played a central role in the murder of 1.1 million Jews at the hands of the Nazi regime.

The University of Connecticut alumnus did so, as he said in an Instagram post, “in light of the rhetoric being spewed through the airwaves,” likely a reference to the antisemitic diatribes which embroiled Ye West and, through that, have to do a better job breaking through ignorance and the close-mindedness and the divisions that are plaguing our society has entangled fellow Celtics alumnus Jaylen Brown via his representation by West’s Donda Sports talent representation agency.

“Up to date, I have visited Auschwitz on two separate occasions,” explained Allen.

Kanye closes Donda Academy, home of 3 major recruits; school reopens hours later

Kanye West decided to close Donda Academy, home of three major basketball recruits, according to an email sent by the principal. Hours later, the school was re-opened.

Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, shut down Donda Academy on Wednesday, according to a letter sent by principal Jason Angell that was acquired by outlets including ESPN and TMZ. A second announcement was released after the original announcement was made, saying the school was re-opened.

On Wednesday, Angell wrote “at the discretion of our Founder, Donda Academy will close for the remainder of the 2022-2023 schools year effective immediately.” He also noted that the school would re-open in September.

About four hours later, according to TMZ, a message from a group called Parents of Donda sent a message instructing parents and students that school would remain in session on Thursday.

TMZ reported that it was unclear if Ye changed his mind or if the parents made a unilateral decision.

Donda Academy is an unaccredited Christian school with about 100 students. Tuition is $15,000 a year, and half the students are on scholarships, per TMZ.

Three major boys basketball recruits attend the institution. Robert Dillingham, a five-star point guard, ranked No. 9 in the country who is committed to Kentucky, leads the backcourt with AJ Johnson, an uncommitted five-star guard ranked No. 15 in the class. Four-star small forward JJ Taylor, ranked No. 64, also attends the school.

West hoped to rival the basketball team of Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.), according to Yahoo, which in recent years has been home to sons of NBA players including LeBron James Jr., Scotty Pippen Jr. and K.J. Martin Jr., along with five-star players including Brandon Boston Jr., Ziaire Williams and Amari Bailey.

Though West’s decision to close Donda for the school year was reversed, the basketball schedule is still in doubt. According to the New York Times, two major tournaments — the Play-By-Play Classic in Louisville, Ky. and the Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Mass. — have rescinded invitations.

West has recently been at the center of the news cycle after making anti-semitic comments, including that he would go “death con 3” on Jewish people, a military readiness position. He later apologized, but when asked if he regretted saying it, he said “absolutely not.” West also said this month that George Floyd died of fentanyl (multiple police officers have pleaded guilty or been ruled guilty in relation to Floyd’s death).

Foto: Ron Sachs / CNP/Sipa USA

Celtics Lab 150: Getting up to speed on Boston’s tilt vs. the new-look Cavaliers with Evan Dammarell

With a changed supporting cast due to the Mitchell trade, it is unclear just how much of a challenge the Cavs are for Boston now.

The Boston Celtics get their first look at the new-look Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday night as they return to TD Garden for their fifth game of the 2022-23 NBA season. They will square off against Donovan Mitchell, last season’s rookie phenom Evan Mobley, and, health allowing, Darius Garland.

With a changed supporting cast due to the Mitchell trade, it is unclear how much of a challenge the Cavs are for Boston now, but it is clear they are a better team for the deal. Will the Celtics handle their business in the wake of a stinging loss to the Chicago Bulls, or encounter their first losing streak of the season?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast sat down with “Locked On Cavs” host and Fear The Sword editor Evan Dammarell to get a feel for the team Boston faces to kick off the weekend, with Dammarell delivering the goods on what we ought to expect.

Justin Quinn and Cameron Tabatabie also dig into the Bulls loss and the Jaylen Brown-Ye West controversy, the latter recorded before Brown’s mea culpa for his initial response.

Jaylen Brown severs ties with Kanye West’s Donda Academy

“In the past 24 hours, I’ve been able to reflect and better understand how my previous statements lack clarity in expressing my stance against recent insensitive public remarks and actions. For that, I apologize. And in this, I seek to be as clear as possible. I have always, and will always, continue to stand strongly against any antisemitism, hate speech, misrepresentation, and oppressive rhetoric of any kind. “In light of that, after sharing in conversations, I now recognize that there are times when my voice and my position can’t coexist in spaces that don’t correspond with my stance or my values. And, for that reason, I am terminating my association with Donda Sports. “I do seek to continue providing mentorship, love, and support to the incredible children, faculty, and young athletes with whom I’ve been grateful to form bonds and relationships with during my time with Donda Academy.”

More on this storyline

Javonte Green continues to provide a spark with his relentless energy and hustle. In his first few minutes, Green blocked a Noah Vonleh layup, defended a Jaylen Brown driving layup by jumping straight up and avoiding a foul, knocked down a wing 3, and forced a Malcolm Brogdon turnover when he stripped the ball. “We just play free,” Green said. The joy has shown up in some gaudy offensive numbers. Through two games, the Celtics have shot 54 percent from the field while scoring a league-leading 123.4 points per 100 possessions. While it’s far too early in the season for any sample size to be meaningful, Boston’s offense has scored at an eye-opening pace. Tatum and Jaylen Brown have averaged a combined 63.5 points per game. The Celtics committed 20 turnovers against Miami but were still able to stomp out Heat charges in both the third and fourth quarters. Celtics’ Jaylen Brown to end Donda affiliation, apologizes for initial remarks on Ye West hate speech

The Celtics star clarified his initial response on Monday, apologizing for its shortcomings on Ye West’s antisemitic diatribes.

In an about-face from his statements to the Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn regarding Ye West’s antisemitic comments in recent weeks, star Boston Celtics shooting guard Jaylen Brown has released a statement apologizing for his initial response, and sharing that he has made the decision to leave West’s Donda talent representation agency.

Brown initially appeared to minimize West’s transgressions to the dismay of many fans and media members while affirming his decision to stay with Donda at that time in Washburn’s interview published Monday. A day later, the Georgia native shared that after some time to reflect on and learn from his response that his initial response was lacking on several levels.

“In the past 24 hours, I’ve been able to reflect and better understand how my previous statements lack clarity in expressing my stance against recent insensitive public remarks and actions,” began Brown.
