Top 10 running backs in the 2024 recruiting cycle

Running backs still play an important role for any offense that wants to be well-balanced.

You need only look at the NFL’s list of free agents to see the running back position being devalued in real-time. There’s a long and analytic conversation to be had there, but the fact that Dalvin Cook, Leonard Fournette and Ezekiel Elliott are all still available at this point in the year says everything you need to know. Nevertheless, running backs still play an important role for any offense that wants to be well-balanced—including the high school and college levels.

Here are the top 10 running backs in the class of 2024. To get the composite rankings, we averaged their national rankings from ESPNRivals and 247Sports.

Tennessee football recruiting: Vols’ notable upcoming March visits

Tennessee football recruiting: A look at the Vols’ notable upcoming March visits

The recruiting dead period ended Feb. 28 and the Volunteers have been actively hosting top recruits for on-campus visits throughout March.

Tennessee currently has five 2024 commitments, headlined by four-stars Jonathan Echols (athlete), JJ Harrell (wide receiver) and Kaleb Beasley (cornerback).

During March, Tennessee hosted four-star linebacker D’Angelo Barber, three-star running back Peyton Lewis, five-star edge rusher Ari Watford and four-star cornerback Jontae Gilbert.

The Vols’ 2024 recruiting class currently ranks No. 9 nationally and No. 5 in the Southeastern Conference. Tennessee’s 2024 class is on pace to be the highest-ranked for the Vols since 2015.

Vols Wire looks at notable upcoming recruiting visits scheduled for the final two weeks in March. Upcoming March recruiting visits are listed below.

5-star Florida State commit Kameron Davis schedules Tennessee visit

Five-star Florida State commit Kameron Davis has scheduled a spring visit to Tennessee. Davis is the No. 2 running back in the country.

Five-star running back Kameron Davis will visit Tennessee on March 25, according to Chad Simmons of On3 Sports.

The 5-foot-10, 200-pound running back is from Dougherty High School in Albany, Georgia. He committed to Florida State on Feb. 25, 2021.

Davis is the No. 27 overall player in the class of 2024. He ranks as the No. 2 running back and No. 6 player from the state of Georgia, according to the 247Sports composite.

He was named the 2022 Georgia Region 1-AAA Offensive Player of the Year. Davis started at quarterback and finished the season with 2,736 passing yards, 20 passing touchdowns, 1,115 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns.

Davis will make the transition to running back at the collegiate level. Georgia and Colorado are other programs who are strongly recruiting the Florida State commit.

LSU offers 5-star Florida State commit

Kameron Davis is a high school quarterback but is being recruited as a running back.

LSU is trying to flip one of the top prospects in the country from Florida State having recently offered [autotag]Kameron Davis[/autotag].

Davis is a 5-foot-10, 205-pound, five-star running back from the class of 2024. He is from Albany, Georgia, where he plays for Dougherty high school.

Davis is currently listed as a running back prospect by every recruiting site but he actually plays quarterback for the Dougherty Trojans. It’s an easier way for them to get the ball into the hands of their best player. Last season Davis threw for more than 2,700 yards and ran for 1,100-plus yards, accounting for 33 total TDs, as a junior, according to 247Sports.

Film Analysis: Davis is an electrifying athlete that makes you hang on the edge of your seat every time he touches the ball. He is a touchdown waiting to happen.

2024 FSU running back commit gets offer from Florida staff

The Gators are looking to poach this top 2024 wide running back target from the ‘Noles.

Billy Napier and his staff are continuing to build relationships with players, despite their commitment status.

[autotag]Kameron Davis[/autotag], a 2024 RB committed to Florida State, was recently offered by Napier after completing a workout with Gators associate head coach [autotag]Jabbar Juluke[/autotag]. Shortly before the dead period, the No. 2 running back in the 2024 class, according to the On3 consensus, was in Gainesville on a college tour where he came away impressed by the atmosphere around the university and Hogtown itself.

The 5-foot-9-inch, 205-pound Albany, Georgia, native isn’t short of suitors, though. Despite being committed to Florida State, programs including Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Ohio State, Texas A&M, Miami and Oregon are attempting to test the strength of Davis’ nearly year and a half commitment to the ‘Noles.

It’ll be interesting to see if Napier can flip another high-profile recruit since taking over as Florida’s head coach. Back in December, he flipped 2022 four-star safety [autotag]Devin Moore[/autotag] from Notre Dame on signing day and earlier this month managed to flip 2023 four-star quarterback [autotag]Markus Stokes[/autotag] from Penn State.

Those players were vital for Napier’s reputation on the recruiting trail, but flipping a top running back from your biggest in-state rival who has been committed for over a year? Well, that would be the reverse Dalvin Cook.
