Michigan State football 2022 transfer tracker

Check out how the transfer portal is shaking out for MSU in 2022

As many know, the transfer portal is set to be a huge part of Mel Tucker’s tenure at Michigan State. The new era of college football is centered around the use of the transfer portal. Tucker used the portal to flip a roster from a 2-5 season in his first year to an 11-2 season in year two, mainly in part to the additions through the transfer portal.

The transfer portal should be viewed as another form of recruiting, as a team will have two ‘recruiting classes’ per year, the traditional high school class and a transfer class.

Transfers do work both ways, while the team will add multiple players through the portal, losing players to the portal will also become a reality every season.

Take a look at how Michigan State’s 2022 transfer portal, both incoming and outgoing, looks like:

Things surprisingly changed on Friday, as Gervin announced on Twitter he was switching his commitment from Wisconsin to Kansas.

The former four-star recruit appeared in 14 games at Michigan State over a three-year span and recorded 44 tackles and 4 passes defended.

The news, though unrelated, came directly on the heels of top class of 2022 target Billy Schrauth committing to Notre Dame. The Badgers class of 2022 currently sits at No. 44 in the country and No. 10 in the Big Ten as a result.

We now wait and see what Paul Chryst and the Badgers will do to bolster the class before the end of the recruiting cycle.

Wisconsin has seen five players enter the transfer portal since the start of the 2021 football season–running backs Jalen Berger, Antwan Roberts and Loyal Crawford, wide receiver Devin Chandler and offensive lineman Kayden Lyles.

That all after adding two players in the transfer portal last summer: running back Chez Mellusi and defensive end Isaac Townsend.

Earlier today the movement continued, as the program received a transfer portal commitment from former Michigan State cornerback Kalon Gervin.

Gervin was a four-star recruit in the class of 2018, ranked as the nation’s No. 188 recruit and No. 20 cornerback. Wisconsin had offered the cornerback before he chose to play at Michigan State.

Gervin appeared in 14 games at Michigan State over a three-year span–recording 44 tackles and 4 passes defended.

The former Spartan will now play his final two years of eligibility at Wisconsin.

Michigan State football CB transfer Kalon Gervin commits to Wisconsin

Kalon Gervin has decided where he will transfer to

Kalon Gervin was at one time, a big recruit in the Mark Dantonio era, being a 4-star top-200 player from Detroit Cass Tech. Gervin made the decision to transfer 4 games into the 2021 season.

Gervin was a starter at cornerback last season, and began this season as the starter as well, but lost his job to the cornerback committee of Chester Kimborough and Chuck Brantley.

The decision to transfer mid-season preserved a year of eligibility for Gervin, as he moved on to a new school.

Gervin has made his decision, and will be staying in the Big Ten and transferring to the University of Wisconsin.

Kalon Gervin says ‘thank you’ to Spartan Nation amid transfer

Kalon Gervin went on Twitter to say goodbye and thank you to Spartan Nation

Kalon Gervin joined Chase Kline in transferring from the program after Michigan State’s week 4 win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Gervin had started the year as a starter on defense, but has since lost his spot, leading to his decision to transfer. Gervin did not see any playing time in the Nebraska contest.

The former 4-star Cass Tech product was once thought of a highly anticipated prospect, unfortunately, did not live up to the bill.

Spartan Nation still appreciated Gervin’s contributions to the program and the fanbase will continue to cheer him on, wherever he ends up going.

Gervin went on Twitter to say goodbye and thank you to the Spartan Nation.

Spartan fans will be interested to see where Gervin ends up transferring to.

On Saturday, Michigan State football found out that they were losing defensive end Alex Okelo to the NCAA transfer portal. On Sunday, it was reported by Rainer Sabin of the Detroit Free Press that two more Spartans will be joining him as cornerback Kalon Gervin and linebacker Chase Kline both entered the portal.

Unlike Okelo, Gervin and Kline are upperclassmen, and both players were receiving less playing time than they might have liked. By transferring now, the two players will save a year of eligibility and find a new place where they can get playing time. Since they weren’t really playing anyway, this is a neutral move for MSU and nothing to be concerned about.
