Three position battles to watch entering fall camp

Alabama fans will want to keep a close eye on these three position battles once fall camp arrivies!

We are now less than six weeks away from the start of Alabama’s 2023 football season and that means fall camp will begin in just a couple of weeks.

Once fall camp arrives there will be plenty of competition across every position group but there are some spots where the competition will be more fierce and where a starting spot is on the line.

It’s true that under head coach [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag], each starting spot is on the line every day, but it is also obvious that there are a handful of spots that are wide open heading into the 2023 season.

Let’s take a look at three position battles that Tide fans will want to keep their eyes on heading into fall camp!

First…CB opposite Kool-Aid…

3 Alabama freshmen named as potential impact players in the SEC

These three first-year members of Alabama Football are poised to make some noise in the SEC during the 2023 season.

Nick Saban will only put players in a position to succeed, so it’s not uncommon for highly-talented members of the Crimson Tide to ride the bench and wait for their turn to shine.

Mac Jones, Josh Jacobs and Bryce Young are a few examples of players selected in the first round of the NFL draft who did not see the field much, or at all, during their freshmen seasons.

In 2023, there will likely be a few first-year players who will see significant playing time. A recent ranking from On3’s Matt Zenitz predicts three Alabama freshmen will be impact players in 2023.

Defensive back Caleb Downs is the first player to be named. Zenitz likens his ability to play as a true freshman to Alabama legend Minkah Fitzpatrick. The Crimson Tide defense is expected to play a large role in the team’s successes in 2023, so Downs will be serving an important role.

Next is Tide running back Justice Haynes. While Jase McClellan will likely see first-team reps with Roydell Williams just behind him, Haynes is still expected to see the field despite his positioning on the depth chart. Haynes was impressive during Alabama’s A-Day spring game and could work his way into a meaningful role in the running back room quickly.

Finally, offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor makes the list. Zenitz argues that Proctor could wind up starting on the offensive line at some point in the 2023 season, but likely won’t begin as a starter. Regardless, Proctor has the size and ability to be an impactful lineman to protect whoever is chosen to be Alabama’s starting quarterback.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Alabama football as the 2023 season approaches.

5-star Kadyn Proctor says he’s receiving less NIL money with flip to Alabama

Kadyn Proctor’s decision to flip from Iowa to Alabama had nothing to do with NIL money, the 5-star said — he’ll actually be receiving less than he would have with the Hawkeyes.

Kadyn Proctor, ranked on the 247Sports Composite as the No. 12 player in the country and best player in Iowa, initially planned to stay home and play for the Hawkeyes. He committed to Iowa in June. But in December, the five-star offensive tackle signed with Alabama, flipping his commitment to the Crimson Tide.

Some speculated that his decision was about Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) money, but he denied the rumors and said it was about football opportunities. In December, he told Hawk Central that people speculating about NIL did not know the situation.

“It’s not about the money because if people knew about the money situation, they wouldn’t be talking about it,” he said at the time. “But I wanted to go play football at a prestigious school. (There’s) a lot of competition down there and ultimately it’s going to make me better.”

He has since clarified, telling 247Sports this week that he’s actually getting less money with Alabama than he would have at Iowa.

“It wasn’t about the NIL money, because I’m not getting as much money as Iowa would’ve paid me,” he said.

Proctor’s mother told Hawk Central that dormitories, team doctors and facilities played a large role in his decision,

The lineman also said he thinks the competition at Alabama will make him a better player.

“I don’t want to come into this school and everybody thinks I’m one of the best players there already. I want to grow. That’s not how I grow. I’ve got to get hit in the mouth before I can grow,” he said.

Alabama, as usual, has a stellar recruiting class that looks to have players that can play key roles as it vies for championships in the coming years. The Crimson Tide has seven five-star players in the class of 2023 committed, by far the most in the nation, and has 21 four-star players. It is ranked the best class in the country.

In fact, Proctor is ranked on the 247Sports Composite as the third-best player in the class despite being the 12th-highest on this list.

So, he’s likely to get his wish of not being assumed as the best player on the field.

CBS Sports analyst defends Kadyn Proctor’s decision to flip to Alabama

Alabama has sent more OT to the first round of the draft under Nick Saban than some conferences entirely!

The Alabama Crimson Tide 2023 recruiting cycle is shaping up to be something special, and five-star offensive tackle[autotag] Kadyn Proctor’s[/autotag] commitment was the cherry on top. Proctor had been committed to the in-state Iowa Hawkeyes before ultimately flipping to the Tide right before NSD.

Proctor’s decision to leave his home state didn’t sit well with fans and he has been a trending topic for some time. Proctor explained that the flip was because he wanted to compete for national titles and play for Coach Saban. Despite his explanation, a lot of people don’t understand his decision and still believe it was because of money.

CBS Sports CFB analyst, Josh Pate, defends Proctor’s decision to flip to the Tide despite how good Iowa offensive linemen have been in the NFL. Pate says about Proctor’s decision, “Alabama has sent seven offensive tackles to the first round since 2009. The entire Big 12 has only sent five. The entire ACC has only sent six. Bama has outdone entire conferences at this position.”

If Kadyn Proctor buys into Coach Saban and the Crimson Tide he could be the eighth man to join this list.
