Giants injury report: Adoree’ Jackson, seven others miss practice

New York Giants CB Adoree’ Jackson and WR Sterling Shepard were among eight who sat out during Wednesday’s walkthrough practice.

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday ahead of a Week 13 game against the Miami Dolphins. Understandably, there were a lot of questions in need of answers due to a growing injury pool.

All eyes were first on quarterback Daniel Jones, who suffered a neck injury last Sunday and may or may not play this coming weekend.

The good news? Jones strapped on his helmet and took to the field. Head coach Joe Judge wouldn’t rule him out for Sunday but cautioned that it’s a fluid situation.

Jones was more optimistic, downplaying the injury and admitting he feels a “responsibility” to play.

Meanwhile, wide receiver Sterling Shepard (quad) and cornerback Adoree’ Jackson both stretched prior to practice, but were ultimately listed as non-participants.

For wide receiver Kadarius Toney (quad), things were even worse. He was off to the side with trainers and does not appear ready to go.

Wednesday’s full (projected/walkthrough) injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: LB Trent Harris (ankle), FB Cullen Gillaspia (calf), CB Adoree’ Jackson (quad), WR John Ross (illness), TE Kyle Rudolph (ankle), WR Sterling Shepard (quad), TE Kaden Smith (knee), WR Kadarius Toney (oblique/quad)

Limited participant: QB Daniel Jones (neck)

Giants defeat Eagles, 13-7: Instant analysis

Analyzing the New York Giants’ 13-7 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles at MetLife Stadium in Week 12.

The Philadelphia Eagles came into MetLife Stadium a hot team. They had won three of the last four and had averaged over 31 points per game over their last three.

Jason Garrett’s dismissal was supposed to open up the offense. It didn’t happen. The Giants’ offense was still stuck in neutral with Freddie Kitchens calling the plays. They racked up only 264 yards of total offense.

It was the defense that carried the Giants in this game, forcing four turnovers and taking advantage of some poor decisions by Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts, picking him off three times, twice deep in Giants’ territory.

The first half ended with the score, 3-0, in favor of the Giants. It was the first time the Eagles had been shutout in the first half all season and the first time the Giants have held an opponent scoreless at halftime in a game since 2018.

The Giants scored on a 35-yard field goal by Graham Gano after another red zone failure. Gano then missed from 51 yards out. Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts killed two Eagles scoring drives by throwing interceptions deep in Giants’ territory to Darnay Holmes and Tae Crowder.

In the second half, the Giants extended their lead to 10-0 when backup tight end Chris Myarick scored on a one-yard pass form Daniel Jones to complete a 10-play, 58-yard drive.

The Eagles got on the board early in the fourth quarter on a one-yard run by Giant-killer Boston Scott to cap off a 10-play drive on which Philadelphia ran the ball on the last nine.

Gano belted a 39-yarder with 2:55 remaining to extend the score to 13-7. Philadelphia was driving into Giants’ territory when their fourth turnover, a Scott fumble, stopped them dead on the Giants’ 37. Dexter Lawrence poked the ball out from behind and Julian Love recovered.

The Giants saved off one more Eagles drive in the final minute to hold on, 13-7, to improve their record to 4-7 on the year.

Notes

  • The Eagles entered the game having committed just 12 turnovers all season. They had four in this game.
  • The Giants have now intercepted opposing quarterbacks in eight straight games, which is the longest streak since they had a eight game streak back in 2011 (Weeks 3-11).
  • The Giants played without safety Logan Ryan (COVID-19) and wide receiver Sterling Shepard (quad) again. Tight ends Kyle Rudolph (ankle) and Kaden Smith (knee) were also out.
  • Rookie wide receiver Kadarius Toney was inactive with a quad issue. Special teamer and backup fullback Cullen Gillaspia was held out with a calf injury.
  • Linebacker Trent Harris (ankle) and cornerback Adoree’ Jackson (quad) led the game in the first half.
  • The Giants played in their all-white color-rush uniforms for the second week in a row, perhaps in homage to Hall of Fame defensive end Michael Strahan, who had his uniform No. 92 retired in a ceremony at halftime.

Giants injury report: Kadarius Toney, Sterling Shepard not practicing

New York Giants wide receivers Sterling Shepard and Kadarius Toney were among those not practicing on Wednesday.

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday and it was Freddie Kitchens who was working with the quarterbacks. That role had been reserved for Jason Garrett, who was terminated by the team on Tuesday.

With that shift out of the way, focus returned to the players, who went through a walkthrough.

On the positive side of things, wide receiver Sterling Shepard (quad) was participating during the portion of practice open to the media but that was apparently extremely limited. He was eventually listed as DNP. Still, he’s inching in the right direction.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, wide receiver Kadarius Toney (quad) was not participating. Neither was safety Logan Ryan, who has not yet cleared COVID-19 protocols.

The Giants’ full (projected) Wednesday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: WR Sterling Shepard (quad), WR Kadarius Toney (quad), FB Cullen Gillaspia (calf), DB Nate Ebner (knee), TE Kaden Smith (knee), TE Kyle Rudolph (ankle)

Limited participant: WR Saquon Barkley (ankle), LB Lorenzo Carter (ankle), CB Adoree’ Jackson (quad), WR John Ross (quad)

Report: Giants’ Saquon Barkley, Devontae Booker expected to play vs. Bucs

New York Giants running backs Saquon Barkley and Devontae Booker are both expected to play against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 11.

The New York Giants will welcome the return of running back Saquon Barkley on Monday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Barkley, who has missed the team’s last four game after suffering a sprained ankle in Week 5, will play barring any setbacks. The same can be said for running back Devontae Booker, who has been dealing with a hip injury.

Additionally, expectations are that left tackle Andrew Thomas (ankle) will be activated from injured reserve. Whether or not he suits up however, remains to be seen.

Finally, tight end Kaden Smith (knee) is not likely to play in Week 11.

Although he is expected to play, Barkley anticipates dealing with some general soreness when he takes the field.

“I would say just some soreness when you’re rehabbing and when you’re coming off of an injury, especially an injury where you had to be non-weight-bearing for a little bit. There definitely will be some soreness there, but that’s part of football, that’s part of the game that I love to play, and I just have to continue to listen to the trainers, listen to the coaches and trust my body,” Barkley told reporters earlier this week.

“I still believe I’m capable of the things that I’ve shown on the field before, so when I’m able to make those plays, when those plays come to me, make those plays and don’t force anything and take it one day at a time. That’s really the only thing I can do. Those are my expectations.”

The Giants can only hope a healthy Barkley is enough to spark their sputtering offense.

Giants injury report: Logan Ryan, Sterling Shepard out vs. Bucs

The New York Giants will be without four players, including WR Sterling Shepard and S Logan Ryan, against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Safety Logan Ryan, after testing positive for COVID-19 earlier this week, will sit out on Monday night against his former Patriots teammate, Tom Brady. Wide receiver Sterling Shepard will also miss the game.

The good news? Wide receivers Kenny Golladay and Kadarius Toney will both play. There’s also a strong chance running back Saquon Barkley will return. Ditto left tackle Andrew Thomas, who remains on injured reserve as of now.

Giants injury report: Kaden Smith returns to practice

New York Giants TE Kaden Smith returned to practice on Friday, while safety Logan Ryan sat out due to COVID-19 protocols.

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Friday and did so one additional player short. Safety Logan Ryan tested positive for COVID-19 and was promptly placed on the reserve list.

On the positive side of things, left tackle Andrew Thomas (ankle/foot) continues to participate and appears to be trending toward an activation from IR. Running back Saquon Barkley (ankle) was also participating and is likely a shoo-in to play on Monday night.

Meanwhile, tight end Kaden Smith (knee) returned to the field.

Linebacker Lorenzo Carter however, remains at home with a stomach illness. His status is uncertain and trending in the wrong direction.

The Giants’ full Friday injury report can be found below:

Giants injury report: Saquon Barkley limited in practice

New York Giants RB Saquon Barkley (ankle) was a limited participant in practice on Thursday, while four others sat out.

The New York Giants have returned from their bye and took the field for their first open practice of the week on Thursday.

Understandably, all eyes were on several of the team’s key players, including running back Saquon Barkley, left tackle Andrew Thomas and wide receiver Sterling Shepard.

Thomas was designated to return to practice and did take the field — an improvement over his status on Wednesday. However, he remains on injured reserve.

Shepard, meanwhile, worked on the side with trainers during the portion of practice open to the media. Barkley was more involved and continues to trend in the right direction. He looks like someone who will plat in Week 11.

Linebacker Lorenzo Carter was not in attendance for the second consecutive day. He continues to deal with an illness unrelated to COVID-19. Also missing were safety Nate Ebner (ankle) and tight end Kaden Smith (knee).

Did not participate: LB Lorenzo Carter (illness/ankle), DB Nate Ebner (knee), WR Sterling Shepard (quad), TE Kaden Smith (knee)

Giants hold on late, upset Raiders, 23-16, in Week 9

The New York Giants defense came up big in the final minute, sealing a 23-16 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 9.

The New York Giants entered Week 9 in desperate need of a win to salvage whatever remaining playoff hope they may have had. The Las Vegas Raiders, meanwhile, were looking to flush a bad few weeks off of the field.

Perhaps somewhat fitting, it became immediately apparent the game would be a defensive battle that went down to the wire. And true to form, it did exactly that.

The Giants and Raiders battled back-and-forth for 60 full minutes with neither team able to land the true finishing blow until rookie edge rusher Quincy Roche sacked Derek Carr with under 1:00 remaining, causing a fumble that was recovered by the Giants.

The Giants improve to 3-6 as the head into the bye week.

Giants injury report: Kenny Golladay returns to practice, eight sit out

The New York Giants welcomed WR Kenny Golladay back to practice on Thursday, but eight did not participate – some due to COVID-19 protocols.

The New York Giants were back on the practice field on Thursday under some unusual circumstances.

On Tuesday through Wednesday, the Giants had in excess of 13 positive COVID-19 tests. However, they quickly determined many (see: most) were false positives and that an error had occurred.

The team paused rapid testing, re-tested the entire organization, canceled in-person press conferences and pushed the team’s entire schedule back. When they did finally take the field in East Rutherford, many were absent.

Due to the continued testing, several Giants did not participate in practice due to COVID-19 protocols. Others, including wide receiver John Ross, were added to the injury report for other reasons.

On the positive side of things, wide receiver Kenny Golladay (knee) returned to practice on a limited basis. He has an outside shot to play in Week 9.

The Giants’ full Thursday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: RB Saquon Barkley (ankle/COVID protocol), RB Gary Brightwell (COVID protocol), LB Lorenzo Carter (ankle), DB Nate Ebner (ankle), DB Xavier McKinney (COVID protocol), WR Dante Pettis (shoulder), TE Kyle Rudolph (personal), WR Sterling Shepard (quad)

Limited participant: WR Kenny Golladay (knee), WR John Ross (quad), TE Kaden Smith (knee), WR Kadarius Toney (thumb)

Full participant: OL Matt Skura (cleared COVID protocol)

Giants injury report: Saquon Barkley, seven others miss practice

New York Giants RB Saquon Barkley and two others missed practice over COVID-19 protocols; eight in total. Two others were limited.

The New York Giants returned to the practice field in East Rutherford on Wednesday but did so without 10 players.

Three of those players — running back Saquon Barkley, guard Matt Skura and safety Xavier McKinney — missed practice due to COVID-19 protocols. All three tested positive for the virus and are awaiting long-testing results.

They join running backs coach Burton Burns, who also tested positive and will miss Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Barkley, Skura and McKinney, if fully vaccinated (Barkley is), will need to test negative twice over a 24-hour span and show no symptoms in order to be able to play on Sunday.

The Giants’ full Wednesday injury report can be found below (projected due to practice being a walkthrough):

Did not participate: RB Saquon Barkley (ankle/COVID protocol), LB Lorenzo Carter (ankle), DB Nate Ebner (ankle), WR Kenny Golladay (knee), FS Xavier McKinney (COVID protocol), WR Dante Pettis (shoulder), WR Sterling Shepard (quad), OL Matt Skura (COVID protocol)

Limited participant: TE Kaden Smith (knee), WR Kadarius Toney (thumb)
