Former Wisconsin outside linebacker commits to a Mountain West school

Former Wisconsin outside linebacker commits to Mountain West school

Former Wisconsin linebacker Kaden Johnson announced his transfer commitment to Nevada earlier today.

Johnson had entered the portal on January 5th. He had previously joined the Wisconsin program as a four-star recruit and No. 1 player from Minnesota in the class of 2020. His career in Madison ended up being largely uneventful, as he recorded only 29 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and one sack in his three years of playing time.

The veteran linebacker joins a Nevada program that is fresh off consecutive 2-10 seasons under head coach Ken Wilson. Wilson was fired at the end of the 2023 season, leading to the recent hire of Jeff Choate to lead the program.

Johnson is one of numerous Wisconsin defenders to enter the transfer portal this season. There are now only three — OLB Ross Gengler, CB Amaun Williams and DE Tommy Brunner — that are yet to commit to a new school.

Another Wisconsin linebacker has entered the transfer portal

Another Wisconsin linebacker has entered the transfer portal

Wisconsin junior outside linebacker Kaden Johnson entered the transfer portal earlier today.

He joins a growing list of notable Badger defensemen to enter the portal, including defensive end Darian Varner, defensive end Rodas Johnson and linebacker Jordan Turner. Add starting linebacker Maema Njongmeta declaring for the NFL Draft, and it looks as if Wisconsin will need new starters at numerous key positions entering 2024.

Johnson previously joined the Wisconsin program as a four-star recruit and No. 1 player from Minnesota in the class of 2020. His career in Madison was largely uneventful, recording only 29 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and one sack in his three years of playing time.

Wisconsin’s incoming transfer class is ranked No. 14 nationally at the moment and includes numerous linebackers. So depth at the positions shouldn’t be an issue, the question is will some top-end talent emerge.

Five Badgers that boosted their stock during spring football practice

Five players that boosted their stock during spring football practice:

Spring football has officially come to a close for the Wisconsin Badgers, who wrapped up their spring evaluation period last Friday night.

Head coach Paul Chryst made a significant amount of changes along the coaching staff this offseason, so this initial installation period allowed those coaches their first real look at their respective position groups.

UW essentially has players competing for meaningful snaps at every position heading into fall camp. The offense lost six preferred starters from last season, while the nation’s top defensive unit needs to replace eight starters of their own in 2022.

Spring football is about trying new things, generating competition, and forcing players out of their comfort zones.

So, it’s important that fans understand no starting positions are going to be won in the spring. However, it can lead to additional opportunities once camp opens in the fall.

Today, we’re going to examine five players that boosted their stock during the Badgers 15 spring practices:

The true freshman running back is already making huge plays for the Badgers in fall camp:

On Wednesday afternoon, Wisconsin football posted a video on their Twitter of true freshman running back Braelon Allen making a huge play in fall camp.

Allen was able to spin out of a tackle from outside linebacker Kaden Johnson at the line of scrimmage and proceeded to level cornerback Amaun Williams with a stiff arm 10 yards downfield. The Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, native reportedly also had some reps with the Badgers’ first team in the red zone on Wednesday per Zach Heilprin.

It is great to see Braelon Allen doing so well at the start of fall camp, and if this play is any indication of what is to come, Badgers fans will be seeing more a lot more of him this upcoming season.

A way-too-early look at the 2022 Wisconsin Badger defense

Paul Chryst and the Wisconsin Badger coaching staff have been making waves on the recruiting trail during the last few months, landing big defensive names including Braelon Allen, T.J. Bollers, Hunter Wohler and Darryl Peterson.

Their 2021 class currently stands at No. 14 in the nation and No. 3 in the conference, both marks placing the class as the best the program’s had since the online ranking era began.

Every college football fan knows that the Badgers pride themselves on their defense and they–no matter who is out there on the field–always seem to have one of the conference’s best defensive units.

With all of the question marks surrounding the upcoming 2020 football season I’m looking into the future at the 2022 defensive unit, one which at this point is lining up to be an absolute sight to see.

Defensive end: T.J. Bollers, Ayo Adebogun, Mike Jarvis, Cade McDonald

Nose tackle: Keeanu Benton, Rodas Johnson

Keeanu Benton showed crazy potential last season as a true freshman. He will be a senior at this point and the leader of a talented defensive front.

Bollers is a four-star recruit and will be coming to Madison in 2021 as one of the highest-rated recruits in the 2021 class.

This unit will have the skills needed to control the opponents’ ground game but even more significantly they will be an absolute force rushing the quarterback.

Wisconsin Signing Class Preview – Kaden Johnson

Wisconsin received Kaden Johnson’s national letter of intent as part of the early signing period on Wednesday.

With the early signing period for high school football players beginning on December 18, Badgers Insider takes a closer look at the recruits that signed with the Wisconsin football program.

In this edition, we examine Minnehaha Academy (MN) outside linebacker Kaden Johnson.

Note: All notes and stats provided by uwbadgers.com

Johnson chose Wisconsin over other offers from: California, Iowa, Iowa State, LSU, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Oregon State, Purdue, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and Virginia

Johnson’s High School Accolades: Four–star recruit by 247 Sports, ESPN and Rivals…No. 1–ranked recruit in Minnesota…First–team All–Metro by Minneapolis Star Tribune…Helped Minnehaha to consecutive Class 2A state titles in basketball

Johnson’s Impact as a Badger: Wisconsin has been on Johnson for a while as the relationship they developed with him early on paid off on Wednesday as he announced he was signing his national letter of intent with Wisconsin.

With the addition of Johnson at linebacker, it continues to add what is already an impressive haul for the Badgers during the 2020 recruiting cycle.

Johnson a consensus four-star prospect joins a linebacker class that already includes projected outside linebackers in consensus four-star Nick Herbig and three-star Aaron Witt and a trio of inside linebackers in Jordan Turner, Malik Reed, and Preston Zachman as all three are rated as consensus three-star prospects.

Like many of the other commits in the 2020 recruiting class, Johnson is a multi-sport athlete as he also is a member of the Minnehaha Academy basketball team. Due to Johnson playing both sports he has demonstrated good footwork in addition to having good foot speed.

Johnson’s quickness allows him to be able to generate pressure in the backfield. Johnson is well put together as he’s listed at 6’4″ and 200 pounds allowing him to bull rush his way in order to create pressure in the backfield.

Johnson does well with his hand placement, which allows him to create the pressure. Although Johnson has done well in creating pressure in the backfield in high school he simply won’t be able to consistently bull rush people at times in order to have success from the outside linebacker position.

Making it important that outside linebackers coach Bobby April is able to provide him with additional tools to help support his pass rushing skills. Considering the more tools Johnson has at his disposal will only make him more dangerous.

Johnson like Herbig is capable of playing as a true freshman. The Badgers lose Zack Baun due to graduation but the success of the Badgers defense relies on creating pressure on the outside by the linebackers. As great as Baun has been this year the Badgers are going to need someone to replace his production in creating pressure in the backfield.

With that being said Johnson will be given his chance of showing he’s capable of creating pressure in the backfield. If he’s able to consistently string together strong practices he’ll give himself a chance of carving out a role for himself.

Wisconsin Lands 2020 LB Kaden Johnson on National Signing Day

Wisconsin’s coaching staff received good news during the early signing period when 2020 Minnesota LB Kaden Johnson announced for Wisconsin

Wisconsin’s impressive haul at the linebacker position in the 2020 recruiting cycle continued on Wednesday morning when consensus four star prospect  Kaden Johnson announced he would sign with Wisconsin.

With Johnson signing with the Badgers that gives the Badgers six projected linebackers in the 2020 recruiting class as he joins a linebacker class that already includes Nick Herbig, Malik Reed, Jordan Turner, Aaron Witt, and Preston Zachman.

Johnson has been on Wisconsin’s radar for a while as the Badgers were one of 15 scholarship offers as Johnson selected Wisconsin over his two other finalists in Nebraska and Minnesota.

Johnson from Minnehaha Academy in St. Paul, MN was recruited by both inside linebackers coach Bob Bostad and outside linebackers coach Bobby April. Johnson rated as the No. 1 player in the state of Minnesota by both Rivals and 247 Sports represents the second player from the state of Minnesota to commit to Wisconsin during the 2020 recruiting cycle as Witt is from Winona.

Johnson listed at 6’4″ and 200 pounds also held offers from LSU, Oregon State, Iowa, Iowa State, Michigan State, Northwestern, Purdue, and Tennessee.
