Wisconsin starting inside linebacker commits to a Big Ten rival

Wisconsin starting linebacker Jordan Turner did not spend much time in the transfer portal. After the now-former Badger entered earlier this week, he recently announced his commitment to Michigan State.

Turner started two seasons for the Badgers, totaling 135 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, five sacks, three interceptions, three passes defended and two forced fumbles in that time. His 2023 campaign included finishing third on the team in tackles with 61, fourth in tackles-for-loss with 6.5 and third in sacks with three.

He now joins a rebuilding Michigan State program with new head coach Jonathan Smith. His defensive coordinator will be Joe Rossi, Minnesota’s defensive coordinator from 2019 to the end of this season.

The Badgers, meanwhile, have some holes to plug on the defensive side of the football.

Former Badgers linebacker finds new home

Former Badger heads to Michigan State

After entering the transfer portal late last week, former Badgers linebacker Jordan Turner committed to play for Michigan State on Monday. The redshirt junior has multiple years of eligibility left to use with the Spartans.

Turner finished the 2023 campaign with 61 total tackles, including three sacks, while also deflecting two passes and forcing a fumble over 11 games with Wisconsin.

Along with Maema Njongmeta (not pursuing sixth season), the Badgers will now officially look to replace both of their primary interior linebackers from this past season.

Of those already in house, Christian Alliegro is the most obvious candidate to see an uptick in usage, beginning at the team’s Jan. 1 matchup with LSU in the ReliaQuest Bowl.

Former Wisconsin linebacker receives crystal ball predictions to a Big Ten rival

Former Wisconsin linebacker receives crystal ball predictions to a Big Ten rival

After Wisconsin starting linebacker Jordan Turner entered the transfer portal earlier this week, 247Sports has posted crystal ball predictions for him to choose Big Ten rival Michigan State.

The predictions come from National Recruiting Analyst Allen Trieu and Michigan State Insider Sean Scherer, and both were posted less than 24 hours after Turner announced he was entering the portal.

Michigan State would be an interesting destination for the former Badger starter. The Spartans are welcoming in new head coach Jonathan Smith, an impressive hire given his recent track record at Oregon State. With that comes a lot of roster turnover, new coordinators and a need for experience on both sides of the ball. Turner would bring exactly that.

Badger Countdown: Wisconsin D holds opponents to 20 PPG in 2022

Can the defense repeat their success in 2023?

The 2023 college football season is almost on us and the Badgers are now 20 days from their season opener against Buffalo on Sept. 2 at home. With Luke Fickell taking over, many have wondered if Wisconsin’s identity will change and in turn, if their defense will remain as good following Jim Leonhard’s departure.

Wisconsin’s defense allowed 20.2 points per game last season, ranking 17th in the entire nation. That was with defensive coordinator and eventual interim head coach Jim Leonhard at the helm.

Now with Fickell and defensive coordinator Mike Tressel coming over from Cincinnati, they’ll have to maintain the team’s defensive reputation. The two men produced some very strong results with the Bearcats and in 2022, their defense allowed 20.6 points per game.

With players like Maema Njongmeta and Jordan Turner leading the defense in Madison, they should have no trouble continuing their success in 2023.

Badger Countdown: Returning linebacker records 37 solo tackles in 2022

The 2023 CFB season continues to get closer and the Badgers are now 37 days away from their season opener against Buffalo on Sept. 2.

The 2023 college football season continues to get closer and Luke Fickell and his Badgers are now 37 days away from their season opener against Buffalo on Sept. 2. In 2022, a redshirt sophomore linebacker recorded 37 solo tackles, good for second on the team.

Jordan Turner is the linebacker who made the tackles and he is back for a redshirt junior campaign this season. Overall, Turner compiled 65 total tackles, including two sacks, while also intercepting a pass, deflecting another and forcing a fumble over 13 contests.

Additionally, Turner earned the Guaranteed Rate Bowl defensive MVP award in December when the Badgers defeated Oklahoma State 24-17. The linebacker recorded eight tackles (four solo) in the contest.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound athlete was suspended by the team for a driving incident in late June, but he was reinstated a couple weeks later. Turner appears likely to be a leader on Wisconsin’s defense in year one under new defensive coordinator Mike Tressel.
