LSU reportedly in contact with Wake Forest cornerback transfer

The Tigers have made the defensive line the focus in the second portal window, but they may also be looking for back-end help.

LSU has made the defensive line a clear focus during the second transfer portal window and has been in the mix for several top targets including [autotag]Damonic Williams[/autotag], a former TCU defensive tackle who visited earlier this week.

But the Tigers also have needs elsewhere, particularly in the defensive backfield. It seems they may be trying to address that as they’re one of several schools that have contacted Wake Forest cornerback transfer [autotag]DaShawn Jones[/autotag], according to On3 (subscription required).

Jones is a redshirt sophomore from Baltimore who has appeared in 22 games for the Demon Deacons. After redshirting his first season in 2021, he became a starter down the stretch in 2022 and started nine of the 10 games he appeared in this past fall.

He finished the 2023 season with 37 tackles (1.5 for loss) and led the team with three interceptions.

The current projected starters at cornerback for LSU are [autotag]Zy Alexander[/autotag], who is coming off a season-ending injury in 2023, and [autotag]Ashton Stamps[/autotag], who emerged down the stretch of his true freshman season.

Also in the mix are sophomore [autotag]Javien Toviano[/autotag] and Ohio State transfers [autotag]JK Johnson[/autotag] and [autotag]Jyaire Brown[/autotag], the former of which was on the team last season but missed the entire season after suffering an injury in training camp.

LSU officially announces the addition of 3 more transfers

The Tigers formally introduced three transfers on Friday, including Liberty receiver CJ Daniels.

The LSU football team officially announced the addition of three transfers on Friday: safety [autotag]Austin Ausberry[/autotag], cornerback [autotag]Jyaire Brown[/autotag] and receiver [autotag]CJ Daniels[/autotag].

Ausberry is a Tigers legacy who comes in from Auburn. His father Verge played linebacker at LSU, and the Baton Rouge native from University Lab High School appeared in seven games in two years at Auburn, totaling just two tackles.

He began his career as a cornerback before moving to safety this season.

Brown previously played at Ohio State. A New Orleans native, he appeared in 14 games during his time in Columbus, totaling nine tackles, three passes defended and a forced fumble.

Daniels is arguably the most significant transfer addition LSU has landed so far. He’s coming off a 1,000-yard season at Liberty, and the Lithonia, Georgia, native could immediately project as the Tigers’ top receiver in 2024.

LSU has been less aggressive in the transfer portal compared to the first two offseasons under coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag]. It has landed just six so far for a class that ranks 47th nationally, per On3.

Report: Alabama cornerback transfer Dezz Ricks cancels visit to LSU

Dezz Ricks was supposed to visit LSU this week, but that trip is now off.

LSU looked like it was going to get a second shot at [autotag]Dezz Ricks[/autotag], a former five-star cornerback in the 2023 class who reclassified from 2024.

Ricks ultimately signed with Alabama, but after redshirting his first season in Tuscaloosa and the retirement of coach [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag], he opted to enter the transfer portal. LSU was one of the teams that reached out to Ricks, and it was expected to host him for a visit.

That visit is now off, according to a report from 247Sports’ Zach Blostein. Ricks is coming off a trip to Texas A&M and could still visit Oregon and Ole Miss.

It’s a tough break for the Tigers with one of the top transfers on their board, especially at a position of great need. LSU has already landed one transfer cornerback this offseason in Ohio State’s [autotag]Jyaire Brown[/autotag].

Ohio State cornerback Jyaire Brown announces transfer destination

Jyaire Brown is heading back to the Bayou.

Jyaire Brown is headed home to the Bayou. Brown announced on Thursday that he has committed to LSU after entering the transfer portal in early December. Originally born and raised in New Orleans, Brown moved to Cincinnati for his final two years of high school playing at Lakota West High School.

The former Ohio State cornerback came to Columbus as a four-star recruit in the 2022 class. Brown appeared in 10 games as a true freshman as the Buckeye secondary battled injuries. But with the return of Denzel Burke, the addition of David Igbinoson, and the emergence of Jordan Hancock, playing time was at a premium this year. Brown saw action in just four games this season which led the defensive back to seek greener pastures.

Since Brown preserved his redshirt this season, he’ll have three years of eligibility remaining.

Brown transfers to a Tiger team that finished 10-3 on the season after defeating Wisconsin in the 2024 Reliaquest Bowl. He’ll look to make an immediate impact on a defense that ranked 115th in the nation in passing yards allowed.

NEW: LSU lands a commitment from Ohio State transfer cornerback

The Tigers landed New Orleans native Jyaire Brown in the transfer portal.

LSU picked up a nice boost for its secondary heading into 2024 on Thursday as Ohio State cornerback transfer [autotag]Jyaire Brown[/autotag] committed to return to his home state.

A New Orleans native and four-star recruit in the 2022 class, Brown played his first two seasons of high school ball at Warren Easton before transferring to Lakota West in the Cincinnati area. He committed to the Buckeyes out of high school and appeared in 10 games as a true freshman, totaling eight tackles, three passes defended and a forced fumble.

However, the former top 200 prospect only appeared in four games this fall, registering just a single tackle.

He qualified for a redshirt this season and will join an LSU secondary in need of help. He’ll have three remaining seasons of eligibility with the Tigers.

Ohio State loses two defensive backs to the transfer portal on Sunday

Not the best Sunday for the Buckeyes

It wasn’t the best Sunday for Ohio State football, the reality of not making the College Football Playoff was the first hit, then the transfer portal made it doubly bad.

First was running back Evan Pryor, then the cornerback room lost a pair. [autotag]Ryan Turner[/autotag], the second-year player from Florida, announced he will move on from the Buckeye program.

During his stint in Columbus, Turner had a hard time seeing the field. He barely played his freshman season. This past year, he received  some run in the blowout win over Minnesota. He made three total tackles.

Next, Louisiana second-year corner [autotag]Jyaire Brown[/autotag] joined Turner in moving on. An extremely similar situation, just one game played this year with nine total tackles and a forced fumble in Brown’s time with Ohio State.

We wish all three players the best in their next football home.

Ohio State Spring Game: halftime three and out

Ohio State Spring Game: halftime three and out #GoBucks

Welcome back to Ohio State football season, the Buckeyes kicked off the Scarlet and Gray game of 2023 and we finally get our first look at the 2023 squad. Everyone expects Ohio State to be back in the National Championship hunt, but they have a lot of questions that need to be answered.

With the injury to quarterback, Devin Brown keeping him out of the spring game, it will be the Kyle McCord show and will likely give him another leg up to become the starter on opening day, but has he truly shined yet? The Buckeyes also will miss a ton from the offensive line, but unfortunately with the semi-half-speed nature of the trenches, it is best to leave judgment on that unit until later. Below are three takeaways from the first half of the spring game.

Ohio State football recruiting class of 2022 scouting report: Jyaire Brown

Ohio State football recruiting class of 2022 scouting report: Jyaire Brown #GoBucks

The Ohio State football program had a consensus top-five class in the country for 2022 and was considered the No. 1 class in the Big Ten by a wide margin. The star of the defensive backfield for this recruiting class is Sonny Styles, but Jyaire Brown has a ton of exciting potential.

It should be noted for those that are not familiar, recruiting classes are not like NFL draft classes. Many of these players will not see time as freshmen and will likely be redshirted. It’s also true that in the age of the transfer portal it is likely several players from this class will not be here at the end.

I wanted to at least take a dive into some of the top studs and we’ll start at the top of the recruiting class with cornerback, Jyaire Brown and we have already previously dived into C.J. Jyaire Brown loses black stripe, becomes ‘official’ Buckeye

One of two black stripe removals for the OSU football team on Tuesday. #GoBucks

It’s that time of year again when we get to see the right of passage at Ohio State better known as black stripe removals. Young guys might have signed on the dotted line and made their way to the banks of the Olentangy as Ohio State football players, but they aren’t truly welcomed into the brotherhood “officially” until they have their black-stripe removed.

Tuesday saw two players shed their black stripes at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. DeaMonte Trayanum went through the short ceremony, and so too did defensive back Jyaire Brown.

Brown came to OSU as a 4-star, top 200 prospect in the 2022 class that was an early enrollee and has now become one of the first in fall camp to receive the honor. He could barely hold back the excitement.

“Shout out B.I.A (Best in America) man,” Brown said. “Shout out all y’all Buckeye Nation. Shout out, coach Mick. Shout out all y’all. Go Bucks!”

Check out the short festivities below.

We’ll continue to keep track of these black stripe alerts as they happen, so check back often for that and many other stories and news items to get you ready for the start of the 2022 season.

SIGNED: Cornerback Jyaire Brown

Jyaire Brown becomes the first player to officially sign a letter of intent to Ohio State for the 2022 recruiting cycle. #GoBucks

It’s the start of the early signing period in college football and Ohio State got its first official national letter of intent from 4-star cornerback Jyaire Brown Wednesday morning.

At 6-foot, 180-pounds, Brown is considered a top 20 lockdown corner in the 2022 recruiting cycle and has all the skills to become another high-level defensive back for Ohio State. He is physical and has great instincts in breaking on the ball with speed and quickness. He has all the tools to continue to develop.

Born in Ohio, Brown moved to Louisiana and became a high-riser as he continued his play in high school. He committed to Ohio State back in April of 2020. There were some rumblings about his interest in other schools like Notre Dame after he committed, but OSU is happy to keep him in the fold for the 2022 class.

Welcome aboard Brown.
