Panthers activate Juston Burris from IR, promote RB from practice squad

Getting Burris back is a welcome development for a young defense that needs all the help it can get.

The Carolina Panthers have activated defensive back Juston Burris from the injured reserve list ahead of Sunday’s division matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Burris started the first six games of the season but suffered a rib injury in the loss to the Chicago Bears. He had been on IR since.

Getting Burris back is a welcome development for a young defense that needs all the help it can get. It also presents an interesting question for defensive coordinator Phil Snow. Undrafted rookie safety/linebacker Sam Franklin took Burris’ place in the lineup the last three games and has flashed some genuine potential. Burris will likely start, but Franklin may demand more snaps in the future. We may learn a lot about how they feel about Franklin based on how much he plays Week 10.

Also, with Christian McCaffrey ruled out this week and Reggie Bonnafon going on injured reserve yesterday, the team needed more depth at running back. So, they have promoted rookie Rodney Smith from the practice squad. Smith played his college ball at Minnesota and posted some impressive rushing numbers in 2016 and 2019. He will be the third running back on the depth chart behind Trenton Cannon and Mike Davis.

The Panthers also re-signed kicker Taylor Bertolet to their practice squad.

Panthers designate DB Juston Burris to return from injured reserve

It can be easy to lose track of all the injuries the Carolina Panthers have suffered this season.

It can be easy to lose track of all the injuries the Carolina Panthers have suffered this season.

Among the under-the-radar ones was the rib issue that hybrid defensive back Juston Burris suffered just before halftime of the Week 6 loss to the Chicago Bears that put him on the injured reserve list. Burris has been designated to return though, according to the official team website.

Burris was playing relatively well before the injury, if nothing special. Sam Franklin has stepped up in his absence, though. It will be interesting to see who starts once Burris is officially activated. The team has 21 days to do so.

The Panthers also announced a few practice squad moves.

Backup running back Reggie Bonnafon has been reactivated to the practice squad after spending several weeks on the injured reserve list with a high ankle sprain. Defensive tackle Woodrow Hamilton was also re-signed to the practice squad. To make room for them, kicker Taylor Bertolet and defensive tackle Mike Panasiuk have been released.

4 takeaways from Panthers coach Matt Rhule’s Monday press conference

Rhule held a press conference with the media via Zoom today. Here are four takeaways from that conversation.

The Panthers lost their fourth-straight game on Sunday, this time on the road against the Chiefs. As bleak as things look in the standings, this young team showed a lot of moxy against the defending champs and proved they believe in coach Matt Rhule’s leadership.

Following the loss, Rhule held a press conference with the media via Zoom today. Here are four takeaways from that conversation.

Report: Panthers placing DB Juston Burris on injured reserve

The bad injury news keeps coming for the Carolina Panthers.

The bad injury news keeps coming for the Carolina Panthers.

According to a report by Joe Person at the Athletic, defensive back Juston Burris is being placed on the injured reserve list with a rib injury. On the bright side, it’s not expected to end his 2020 season.

This news was expected, as we saw Burris being carted off the field late in the first half of Sunday’s loss to the Chicago Bears.

The team already has a potential replacement lined up, with the New York Post reporting that Carolina is poaching safety Sean Chandler off the Giants practice squad.

In related news, the Panthers are not expected to activate running back Christian McCaffrey off the IR list this week, per Tom Pelissero at NFL Network.

With a short week against the Falcons coming up, we likely won’t see him back on the field until Week 9 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Report: Panthers signing safety off Giants practice squad

To fill that hole, the Panthers are signing safety Sean Chandler off the Giants practice squad, according to a report by Ryan Dunleavy.

The Panthers are shorthanded at a few positions due to injuries and the pandemic. Two offensive linemen (Tyler Larsen and Michael Schofield) are currently on the team’s reserve/COVID-19 list. Carolina is also down a man at safety after Juston Burris suffered an injury on Sunday against the Bears. While we don’t know exactly what happened, it was serious enough for Burris to be carted off the field so we can assume he’ll be out for a while.

To fill that hole, the Panthers are signing safety Sean Chandler off the Giants practice squad, according to a report by Ryan Dunleavy.

Chandler (six-foot, 195 pounds) played for coach Matt Rhule at Temple, where he posted 10 interceptions and 13.5 tackles for a loss in 48 games.

After college, he went undrafted and was first signed by the Giants in 2018. He’s been a core special teams contributor for them over the last three seasons, totaling 531 snaps there as opposed to 174 on defense.

Carolina Panthers win third straight game, may actually be good

Could these 20220 Carolina Panthers be actually, uh, good? Well . . .

Could these 20220 Carolina Panthers be actually, uh, good? Well . . .

One telltale sign of a good team is that they take care of bad teams. And their Week 5 foes, the Atlanta Falcons are—indeed—a bad team.

The Panthers did not play around with their food this afternoon, grabbing the winless Falcons and refusing to let go in a 23-16 victory. Their surprising move to 3-2 on the season was all about being in control.

That was evident throughout with another calm and collected performance from quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. He was the maestro of a finely-tuned orchestra once again, completing 27 of his 37 attempts for 313 yards, a pair of touchdowns and no interceptions.

Bridgewater’s proficiency and grasp on the offense is growing stronger by the week, leading the group to not only considerable production, but a strong mentality. Their zero turnovers on Sunday look even sweeter alongside their 437 total yards and a 33:06 to 26:54 edge in the time of possession battle.

The most encouraging sign from this unit is playing to their wide receivers’ strengths. No one has benefited more than Robby Anderson.

Anderson (eight receptions, 112 yards) shined as a technician, using his quickness and precise footwork to consistently gain separation in opening up quite a number of easy throws for Bridgewater. Through five games, he’s up to 489 receiving yards, averaging 13.6 yards per catch.

While we did see signs of the fifth-year wideout’s potential wit hthe Jets, they were far too sparse. Here in Carolina, Anderson is pairing his talent with opportunity to look like the No. 1 wideout he should be.

D.J. Moore found himself an opportunity as well, one that put his elite yards-after-catch ability on display. His 57-yard catch-and-run gave the Panthers their first lead at 13-7 with 2:30 remaining in the second quarter.

For Moore, unlike in 2019, his game should be more about quality than quantity. He doesn’t need a high volume of targets to succeed or make an impact. He just needs an opening or two to turn the burners on, like he did today.

Even the organization’s red-headed stepchild, Curtis Samuel, got in on the action. Offensive coordinator Joe Brady made it a point to incorporate the multi-faceted weapon into the offense early and often, forcing seven total touches his way in the first half alone. While his final numbers don’t exactly jump off the box score (five catches for 36 yards and four carries for 28 yards), Samuel can be used as a versatile and dangerous piece moving forward.

Just as well, running back Mike Davis keeps making a case to stay involved. He finished the game with 89 yards on 16 rushes and a hefty nine catches for another 60 yards, including a three-yard touchdown on a simple lob from Bridgewater with 23 seconds before halftime. That gave Carolina a 20-7 advantage that would never be challenged.

And let’s give the defense some much earned props because, damn, they’ve deserved it. Run defense is still an issue, as they made 2020 Todd Gurley somehow look like 2017 Todd Gurley (121 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries).

However, the Panthers locked down quarterback Matt Ryan. He completed 21 of his 37 throws for just 226 yards, no touchdowns and an interception. The pick was timely, too, as safety Juston Burris prevented what could’ve been a game-tying touchdown to Russell Gage with 8:49 left in the game. Burris’ stop halted a 10-play, 71-yard drive.

Carolina has now effectively silenced two of the NFL’s most potent passing attacks. Adding in last week’s triumph over the Arizona Cardinals, the Panthers defense limited Ryan and Kyler Murray to 359 passing yards combined in their last two outings.

With seemingly every obstacle a team can possibly face in their way on top of a global pandemic—Matt Rhule’s Panthers have easily been one of the league’s most impressive and surprising teams thus far.

Maybe we can chalk it up to the ol’ “Hey, it’s 2020! Everything is weird!”

Or maybe, just maybe, this team is . . . actually good.

Panthers Highlights: 5 promising plays from the defense vs. Chargers

Panthers Highlights: 5 promising plays from the defense vs. Chargers

This Panthers defense was supposed to be the worst in the NFL this season. That may yet prove to be true, but so far the numbers and the tape suggest there are several defenses that are playing much worse than this one. Also, we saw several signs of progress in this past week’s upset road win over the Chargers, including an improved pass rush and some timely takeaways.

Here are five promising defensive plays we saw during the Week 3 victory.

DE Brian Burns’ strip sack

Carolina’s defensive line came to life against the Chargers, getting consistent pressure on rookie quarterback Justin Herbert. Burns was in Herbert’s grill all afternoon, starting with this strip sack.

DT Derrick Brown’s early TFL

The team’s top-10 draft pick flashed in run defense several times, totaling three tackles for a loss. Here’s another angle on his first.

LB/DB Jeremy Chinn shuts down a screen

Chinn has had some issues in coverage and has missed a few tackles, but overall he’s defended at a very high level for a rookie. He played every defensive snap against LA, including this one when he shut down a screen pass for Austin Ekeler.

S Juston Burris blows a play up in the backfield

Here’s a well-timed safety blitz by Burris. He reads the play and blows it up in the backfield, resulting in a huge loss for the Chargers.

CB Donte Jackson’s pick

Here Herbert just simply misread the defense, leading to a relatively easy pick for Donte Jackson.

Panthers DB Juston Burris on Jeremy Chinn: ‘He’s going to be great’

On Sunday, Panthers defensive back Juston Burris said Chinn is going to be great for this defense wherever they line him up.

The Carolina Panthers are kicking off the 2020 season with what looks like a brand new team. In the defensive backfield, the team lost two starters by releasing safety Eric Reid and losing cornerback James Bradberry to free agency, leading to an NFL draft class stacked with defensive players.

One pick that was highly praised by many was Jeremy Chinn—  the No. 64 overall selection at the end of the second round. Carolina traded up for Chinn, drawing praise from former franchise great Muhsin Muhammad, who called it a “helluva pick.”

On Sunday, Panthers defensive back Juston Burris said Chinn is going to be great for this defense wherever they line him up.

Burris (six-foot, 212 pounds) was signed by Carolina this offseason on a two-year deal worth $8 million coming off his best year in Cleveland. Over nine games, Burris recorded 32 combined tackles, adding two interceptions and a forced fumble.

Even after signing Burris and bringing back Tre Boston, the team still lacked depth in the secondary. So, Carolina picked four defensive backs in the draft beginning with Chinn, the Southern Illinois product who calls himself a positionless defender, or “just a threat,” per the official team website.

Chinn says the Panthers have been rotating him between safety, nickel, dime and the box. However, his most natural position may be strong safety. That means to earn his playing time, first Chinn might have to prove himself compared to Burris.

Panthers S Juston Burris looking forward to competing against Gronk

Panthers safety Juston Burris looking forward to competing against Buccaneers tight end Rob Gronkowski.

The Panthers finished in fourth place in the NFC South last season and winning the division hasn’t gotten any easier in the meantime.

It’s just been reported that the Patriots have agreed to trade the now un-retired tight end Rob Gronkowski and a seventh-round pick to the Buccaneers for a fourth-rounder.

The move gives Tom Brady another receiving weapon (as if he needed another) that he trusts and opens up the Bucs to trade O.J. Howard. It will make defending Bruce Arians’ offense that much more difficult for the Panthers and the rest of the division.

One of the guys who will likely be tasked with covering Gronk is recently-signed Carolina safety Juston Burris.

For his part, Burris says he loves competing against the best and is looking for war in the NFC South.

Burris is projected to be the team’s starting strong safety next to Tre Boston. He’s only started 11 games in his career, though and Gronkowski presents challenges even for the most established defensive backs in the league.

Coach Matt Rhule might have a lot of faith in Burris’ abilities. This development is another good reason why the team should consider drafting a prospect like Isaiah Simmons, though.
