Texas A&M basketball 2022-23 regular season roster breakdown, stats, and analysis

As Texas A&M marches toward its tournament run we look back at the regular season roster that propelled the Aggies to success in ’22-23.

Texas A&M enters the month of March after a superb regular season that saw the Aggies finish 23-8 overall and 15-3 in the SEC, good for second place in the conference. As compensation for their success this year the Aggies enter the SEC tournament as the top-tier threat to dethrone Alabama, while they also await to hear their name called on Selection Sunday. The latter is arguably a given at this point.

With regular season celebrations in the rearview mirror, it’s now full steam ahead with focus and energy toward tournament season. But before the madness of March ensues, it’s worth a look back on the 14-man roster that propelled Texas A&M to a stellar season.

We break down each player’s 2022-23 stats below, as well as recap with a quick analysis:

Julius Marble and Wade Taylor IV’s Post Game Press Conference after Texas A&M defeats Tennessee 68-63

See what Julius Marble and Wade Taylor IV had to say after Texas A&M’s huge 68-63 victory over Tennesee on Tuesday night

The 25th-ranked Texas A&M Aggies (21-7, 13-2 SEC) are by far one of the hottest teams in the college basketball landscape since the start of SEC play, going 15-2 since Christmas and winning their sixth straight game after defeating the 11th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers 68-63 on Tuesday night.

Inside an absolutely packed Reed Arena with over 12,989 in attendance, The Aggies went toe to toe with one of the best defenses in the country, holding the Volunteers to 29% from 3-point territory with some of the best perimeter defense they’ve played all season while notching 9 steals forcing 16 turnovers on the night.

Led by the heroics of sophomore guard Wade Taylor IV, who scored a game-high 25 points, while going for a career-high 16-17 from the free throw line, junior forward Julius Marble also had one of his best games of the season, recording 21 points and 9 rebounds, and setting his own career high from the free throw line 9-13 from the stripe. As a team, the Aggies shot 39% from the field, and 26% from three, but went a combined 28-34 from the throw line, accounting for 41% of their offense on the night.

With the win, Texas A&M has won their 13th SEC game and are now just half a game out from a first-place finish in the conference, while also earning their 6th Quad victory after defeating Tennessee, making them a lock for the NCAA Tournament from here on out.

After the game, the stars of the night Wade Taylor IV and Julius Marble spoke to the media to discuss the win, and the incredible atmosphere Reed Arena provided on such an important night for the program. Here’s what both had to say on the night.

Aggies basketball lands big-time transfer

Aggie hoops lands big-time transfer @julius_marble

Ever since Buzz Williams’ Aggie basketball team came up one shot short of an NIT championship in the 2021-2022 season, they’ve taken some hits. First, star guard Quenton Jackson declared for the 2022 NBA draft, then Hassan Diarra and Aaron Cash entered the transfer portal.

But the Aggie hoops program got some good news Monday as Julius Marble, a Dallas native, and 6-foot-9, 245 pound power forward transfer from Michigan State, announced that the next step in his career would be in taken in College Station as a member of Williams’ squad.

Marble played in all 36 games for the Spartans last year and averaged just over 6 points and 4 rebounds per game.

Marble brings size and experience with him to College Station, and after his time with Tom Izzo at Michigan State, he’ll know what it takes to win at a high level.

Former Michigan State basketball C Julius Marble commits to Texas A&M

Julius Marble has found his new home

Michigan State basketball lost a key member to its frontcourt this offseason when Julius Marble made the decision to enter the NCAA’s transfer portal. The decision was made more for personal reasons, with Marble wanting to be closer to his hometown of Dallas and his family. Marble spent three years in East Lansing, where he averaged 4.3 points and 2.4 rebounds, and was set to be a starter at the center spot for the 2022-23 season.

Marble has made his decision, after taking a visit to Oklahoma and Texas A&M, he will be committing to Buzz Williams and the Texas A&M Aggies.

Former Spartan Julius Marble reportedly to visit Oklahoma next week

Former Michigan State Spartans center Julius Marble is reportedly going to visit Oklahoma next week

Former Michigan State Spartans center Julius Marble is reportedly going to visit Oklahoma next week.

Marble entered the transfer portal last week, a move that some (including myself) were surprised to see. Marble is reportedly set to visit Oklahoma next week, according to Endless Motor Sports.

Marble appeared in 90 career games in his three seasons with the Spartans. He averaged 4.3 points and 2.4 rebounds per game, but was expected to be a key piece on next year’s squad.

Marble is from Dallas so it was assumed by some that he’d be interested in transferring to a school closer to home. Oklahoma certainly would be just that and makes a lot of sense for both him and the Sooners.

Michigan State basketball C Julius Marble enters transfer portal

A member of the MSU basketball team has entered the NCAA transfer portal

The Michigan State basketball program lost a member of its team to the NCAA transfer portal this afternoon. Center Julius Marble has made the decision to leave the team and take his career in a different direction.

The decision by Marble was surely not an easy one, but one that is very impactful for himself and the Spartans basketball program.

It is now of the utmost importance that Tom Izzo and his staff prioritize getting a center out of the NCAA transfer portal, or possibly making a late surge for the limited center prospects that are still undecided in the 2022 recruiting class.

WATCH: Michigan State Basketball bench fired up during game vs. No. 2 Michigan

Julius Marble and Steven Izzo just about lost their minds after an and-one layup from Marcus Bingham Jr.

Michigan State Basketball is currently locked in a fun, intense game against in-state rival No. 2 Michigan, a game they have led for most of the day. MSU has been playing with a ton of energy and excitement in this one, and that was never more evident than in a moment in the second half.

The cameras went to the sideline after Marcus Bingham Jr. made an and-one layup, drawing the third foul on Michigan star Hunter Dickinson. Julius Marble and Steven Izzo were seen, well, losing their minds on the sideline in an awesome moment.

Three quotes that stood out from Michigan State’s postgame press conference after Michigan loss

Tom Izzo and Julius Marble had a few interesting quotes following Michigan State’s loss to Michigan.

Michigan State Basketball lost a humbling game against Michigan on Thursday night 69-50. The loss was one of the most frustrating of the season, particularly because the Spartans were in the game until two things happened:

  1. Aaron Henry received a flagrant foul because the officials decided that an elbow he threw was intentional.
  2. Michigan big man Hunter Dickinson dove for a loose ball in front of MSU point guard Rocket Watts.

After that, Michigan went on a huge run, putting the game out of contention for the rest of the night.

Below, you can check out the three most interesting quotes from Tom Izzo, and one from Julius Marble, from the postgame press conference.

Tom Izzo acknowledged on his radio show during the pregame for Michigan State Basketball vs. Illinois that he would be using a starting lineup of:

  • Rocket Watts
  • Joshua Langford
  • Aaron Henry
  • Gabe Brown

However, he didn’t say who would start at the center position. That information didn’t come out until just before tip, when it was revealed that Julius Marble would start against Illinois’ massive center Kofi Cockburn.

You can expect to see Izzo throw a variety of players at Cockburn throughout the game.
