Spain survives Lithuania 102-94 in overtime thanks in part to Celtics alum Juancho Hernangomez

Juancho helped keep Spain’s EuroBasket hopes alive with 13 points off of the bench.

The Spanish National Team will live to play another game in this year’s European Basketball Championship (commonly referred to as the EuroBasket) in no small part thanks to the efforts of Boston Celtics big man alumnus Juancho Hernangomez.

The star of the Netflix “Hustle” film had plenty on display in Spain’s 102-94 overtime win over the Lithuanian National Team on Saturday evening. Hernangomez put up 13 points, 4 rebounds, and a steal in just under 31 minutes of playing time in the victory, shooting a solid 4-of-8 from the floor, all 4 of his misses coming from shits he took beyond the arc.

The former Boston big man also got to the line 6 times, converting 5 of them into extra points for Spain, with no personal fouls or turnovers all game.

“It was almost overwhelming seeing the effort of this time which has nine players who haven’t played in the past in a Eurobasket”, added Spanish head coach Sergio Scariolo via Eurohoops. “We still found a way to win it. You have to give credit to the heart of those guys and it’s a matter of pride”

Where do Boston Celtics alumni rank among the other EuroBasket players?

These are the results of an endeavor to rate the Celtics alumni who are still participating in the European Basketball Championship.

The Boston Celtics have a significant number of alumni (and one stashed player) that are participating in the 2022 FIBA European Basketball Championship (better known as the EuroBasket) underway across the continent of Europe at the moment, with some of them among the highest-rated players taking part in the competition.

But wait, you may be asking, who is doing the rating of these players? Alberto De Roa of HoopsHype has developed a rating system called “Global Rating” — read more about it here — that the HoopsHype analyst applied to the players playing the games making up the EuroBasket so far.

These are the results of De Roa’s endeavor to rate the Celtics alumni who are still participating in the European Basketball Championship.

Low-scoring night for former Celtics Hernangomez, Larkin as Spain defeats Turkey, 72-69, in EuroBasket play

Boston alumni Shane Larkin and Juancho Hernangomez combined for just 11 points as Larkin’s Turkey fell to Hernangomez’s Spain.

On a night when both former Boston Celtics in the contest had relatively low-scoring games, floor general Shane Larkin and big man Juancho Hernangomez combined for 11 points in Turkey’s 72-69 loss to Spain in EuroBasket play.

For Spain, Hernangomez put up 8 points, 7 rebounds an assist and a block. He committed one foul and one turnover in just over 18 minutes of play off the bench. For Turkey, Larkin’s shooting woes continued. The onetime Miami player added 3 points on 1-of-6 shooting.

Larkin also contributed 3 rebounds, 6 assists, and a steal in the loss, fouling twice and turning the ball over once in just under 31 minutes of game time.

With the win, Spain improves to 4-1 in Group A to take the top spot while Turkey drops to 3-2 in Group A and is in second.

Spain falls to Belgium 83-73 despite 11 points from Boston Celtics alum Juancho Hernangomez

Even Bo Cruz couldn’t save Spain from themselves today.

Former Boston Celtics big man Juancho “Bo Cruz” Hernangomez did his best to push the Spanish National Team to a win in EuroBasket play on Sunday, but Spain fell 83-73 to a determined Belgian National Team despite the efforts of the star of the Netflix “Hustle” film to prevent it.

The Celtics alum put up 11 points, 3 rebounds, an assist, and as many steals in just under 26 minutes of floor time on his way to picking up just 1 personal foul and turning the ball over 0 times. The Madrid native managed to shoot an efficient 50% from the floor overall, 40% from 3-point range, and 75% from the free throw line in the loss.

“When we go above and beyond to the limits of our energy we can be a good team,” said Spanish National Team head coach Sergio Scariolo via Eurohoops.

“When we don’t, like tonight, we are not. We know that our fuel comes from our defense.”

Bo Cruz had things under control for Spain on Saturday.

Bo Cruz had things under control in the Spanish National Team’s 90-64 drubbing of the Georgian National Team in EuroBasket play on Saturday, Juancho Hernangomez — the star of the Netflix “Hustle” film in which the Spaniard plays Cruz — helping drive Spain to the win over Georgia.

Ex-Boston Celtics big man Juancho Hernangomez gets 13 points, 7 boards vs. Bulgaria with Spain

It was a generally efficient night for the Spaniard, who only fouled once and did not turn the ball over in this game.

Former Boston Celtics big man Juancho Hernangomez helped drive his Spanish National Team to a 114-87 blowout of the Bulgarian National Team on Thursday on day one of EuroBasket action. The star of the Netflix documentary “Hustle” looked much the part of Bo Cruz, his rising star Spanish prospect, in the win, putting up a solid 13 points, 7 rebounds, and an assist in just under 21 minutes of floor time against Hungary.

The former Celtics forward shot a solid 5-of-1o from the field overall, including going 2-of-5 from beyond the arc and hitting his single attempt from the charity stripe.

It was a generally efficient night for the Spaniard, who only fouled once and did not turn the ball over in this game.

The onetime Boston big man played for the Celtics for 18 games of the 2021-22 NBA season before being dealt to the San Antonio Spurs in a three-team deal, and averaged 1.1 points and 1.4 rebounds per game with Boston.

Spain’s Juancho Hernangomez highlights: Ex-Boston Celtics forward gets 5 points, 4 boards vs. Netherlands

‘Bo Cruz’ helped Spain blow out the national team of the Netherlands in World Cup group stage qualifying on Saturday.

He might not be the next Bo Cruz of the NBA, but Spanish national and Boston Celtics alumnus Juancho Hernangomez helped Spain obliterate the Netherlands National Team, 86-64, in World Cup group stage qualifying on Saturday.

The former Boston swingman put up a respectable 5 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists as a starter in just under 24 minutes of floor time. Hernangomez turned the ball over twice and picked up as many personal fouls, while shooting 2-of-5 from the field overall, 1-of-3 from beyond the arc, and missing both of his free-throw attempts.

The protagonist of “Hustle” might not be quite the star player portrayed in the Netflix film he co-starred with Adam Sandler in, but he is still playing high-level basketball for Spain and, hopefully, this season in Toronto, his new home.

12 Boston Celtics alumni participating in 2022 EuroBasket

The EuroBasket is back with one current Celtics player and 11 alumni.

A number of alumni from the Boston Celtics are planning to play in the 2022 EuroBasket competition, the first in five years due to the pandemic. Currently slated to start in two weeks with 34 total NBA players on 17 different teams, the EuroBasket competition — in full, the European Basketball Championship — normally takes place every four years with up to 24 teams participating.

Historically, it had previously run every two years, but now has switched to a similar model as the FIBA World Cup, and the last was held in 2017 before the pandemic, with conditions in 2021 deemed too fraught to hold the competition. But now the EuroBasket is back with one current Celtics player and 11 alumni.

Let’s take a look at them all.

Woj: Boston alum Juancho Hernangomez signing one-season deal with Toronto Raptors

Bo Cruz is headed north, it seems.

Bo Cruz — or at least the NBA player who starred in Adam Sandler’s “Hustle” as him — is headed north to Canada according to new reporting from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Per Woj, unrestricted free agent Juan Alberto “Juancho” Hernangómez Geuer will sign with the Toronto Raptors for the 2022-23 season.

The former Boston Celtics big man was dealt to the team from the Minnesota Timberwolves for Kris Dunn, Carsen Edwards and draft assets in the 2021 NBA offseason, but he did not mesh well with the Celtics. He fell out of the rotation after an underwhelming start. In January 2022, Hernangómez was traded to the San Antonio Spurs for Bol Bol and PJ Dozier.

The Spaniard averaged a career-low 1.1 points and 1.4 rebounds per game while with Boston, but bounced back in his last home with the Utah Jazz, putting up 6.2 points and 3.5 boards per game.
