NFL free agency: Rumors and reports on the remaining Lions on the market

NFL free agency: Rumors and reports concerning the Lions from 2022 who remain available in free agency

The Detroit Lions currently have 13 unrestricted free agents that are free to sign with other teams.

As news floods in about all of the trades, signings, and visits around the league, it’s hard to keep track of where these former Lions are headed next.

EDGE Austin Bryant‘s name has not appeared in any headlines as of yet. The 2019 fourth-round pick was benched last season in favor of Julian Okwara and rookie James Houston.

Wide receiver DJ Chark has drawn interest from several teams, including the Cleveland Browns, New York Giants and Carolina Panthers. While he is still expected to test the market, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reported that there is a chance that Chark returns as a Lion in 2023.

Cornerback Mike Hughes is reported to have a visit scheduled with the Atlanta Falcons. The versatile cornerback had six starts for the Lions at both the outside and nickel positions.

Running back Justin Jackson has not garnered any interest so far in free agency. He did well as Detroit’s third running back last season.

Offensive lineman Tommy Kraemer is another exclusive-rights free agent who the Lions opted not to bring back. He was sidelined with a back injury for the entirety of the 2022 season, so his health may be a factor into why he has not re-signed. As an undrafted rookie in 2021, he provided reliable depth for the interior offensive line.

Safety C.J. Moore excitedly rejoined the Lions mid-season after spending some time with the Houston Texans. He was the heart and soul of Detroit’s special teams unit and will likely be looking for that role elsewhere. He recently met with the New England Patriots, who recent signed fellow former Lions special teamer Chris Board.

Cornerback Amani Oruwariye was once thought to be a sure starter for the Lions. Instead, he rode the bench for most of 2022 and entered free agency without any suitors. He has not been linked to any teams yet in free agency.

Cornerback Bobby Price was not tendered as a restricted free agent and is now free to sign with any team. He suffered a knee injury in 2022 and will likely need to wait until he’s cleared before signing with a team. Birkett also reported that Price will be in the Detroit area for a checkup on his knee.

Quarterback Nate Sudfeld was the lone backup for Jared Goff last season and now will test the free agent market. He also has no noteworthy news so far in free agency.

Offensive lineman Dan Skipper was a feel-good story for the Lions as he performed well as a starter in place of the injured Jonah Jackson. He is yet another free agent in Detroit who has not met with any teams in the past few days.

Linebacker Josh Woods was a team captain and special teams ace last season. He has no ties to any other teams at this time.

AEW Dynamite results: Ruby wins but has had it with women’s division turmoil

It’s time for the first part of a little Texas two-step for AEW. Tonight it’s Dynamite from Laredo, and the path to Revolution should start getting a bit more clearly illuminated.

But the highlight of tonight’s show should be the in-ring action, which will be plentiful and varied. The headline bout is a Texas Tornado tag team match (never more appropriate than when it’s, you know, really in Texas) that features Jon Moxley and Claudio Castagnoli going up against Rush and Preston Vance.

Want an even bigger tag team match? We’ve got that too. Orange Cassidy, The Acclaimed and Daddy Ass are on one side of it, with Jeff Jarrett, Jay Lethal, Satnam Singh and Sonjay Dutt on the other.

The women’s division has been full of intrigue, and Ruby Soho has been in the middle of most of it. She’ll experience that in the most direct way possible in Laredo, as she’s slated to be in a three-way dance that also involves Toni Storm and Britt Baker. Is this the night where Soho will have to pick a side?

There’s much more, as well. Even AEW World Champion MJF will appear, even though he’s made it clear he’d rather not. Will be run scared again from his Revolution opponent, Bryan Danielson, or has he finally found his courage ahead of the pay-per-view?

Lions Week 17 injury update: Kerby Joseph, Josh Reynolds return to action

Lions Week 17 injury update: WR Josh Reynolds returned in full, while S Kerby Joseph was one of 3 Lions to come back in a limited capacity

There were some positive developments on the Detroit Lions injury front on Thursday as the team prepares to host the Chicago Bears in Week 17.

Three of the six players who sat out Wednesday’s practice returned to action in a limited capacity. Most notable amongst that group is starting safety Kerby Joseph, who was idled with a back problem to start the work week.

Reserve offensive lineman Logan Stenberg (illness) and special teams LB Josh Woods (biceps) were also back on Thursday as limited participants.

Three players remained out:

  • OL Kayode Awosika (ankle)
  • S DeShon Elliott (shoulder)
  • C Frank Ragnow (foot)

Ragnow normally takes the first two days of practice off each week, so his absence is nothing unexpected. Elliott remains day-to-day per head coach Dan Campbell, but it’s not looking great for the team’s top run-defending safety to play against the Bears.

Wide receiver Josh Reynolds missed Wednesday’s session with an illness, but he was back as a full participant on Thursday.

AEW Rampage quick results: Claudio Castagnoli gets a tough test from Dax Harwood

Get quick AEW Rampage results for the September 9, 2022 episode from Buffalo.

Well this has been quite the week in AEW. A week unlike any other, one might even say. Happily, AEW Dynamite provided a nice reset of sorts, and since tonight’s AEW Rampage was filmed right after that, it should keep the good vibes going.

A high quality main event will certainly help with that, and this show has that covered in the form of a ROH World Championship Match with Claudio Castagnoli defending against Dax Harwood. There’s also a Grand Slam Tournament of Champions match in store, with young lions (not the NJPW kind, mind you) Darby Allin and Sammy Guevara doing battle.

And hey, that bout is up first, so we’re going to be off and running. Let’s get to it.

AEW Rampage results:

  • Sammy Guevara def. Darby Allin by pinfall to advance in the AEW Grand Slam Tournament of Champions, and will face Jon Moxley next week on Dynamite
  • Samoa Joe is glad to be back in AEW, and when Josh Woods steps up looking for an opportunity, Joe wants to grant it right away, but Smart Mark Sterling says it’ll happen next week in Albany
  • Serena Deeb def. Madison Rayne by submission
  • Jade Cargill says Athena was just another day in the neighborhood, and she’s looking forward to rolling on to 50-0 or beyond
  • Powerhouse Hobbs scoffs at the idea that his victory over Ricky Starks was a surprise, and he looks forward to showing everyone just who he is going forward
  • Claudio Castagnoli def. Dax Harwood by submission to retain the ROH World Championship

Lions name their captains for the 2022 season

The Detroit Lions chose 6 team captains for the 2022 season

The Detroit Lions players and coaches have voted for their team captains for the 2022 season. Six players will don the captain’s “C” on the jersey for Detroit.

On offense, quarterback Jared Goff and center Frank Ragnow earned the captaincy. Both have shown real veteran leadership not just at their position groups but across the entire offense all offseason.

Defensively, three Lions will share the captain duties. Veteran DT Michael Brockers, the only player on the roster over 30 years of age, was an obvious choice. Linebacker Alex Anzalone and safety Tracy Walker will also serve as captains.

On special teams, linebacker Josh Woods gets the nod. It makes sense for a player who earned his roster spot almost exclusively because of what he brings to the punt and kick units.

Lions re-sign LB Josh Woods before free agency

The Detroit Lions re-sign LB Josh Woods prior to him becoming a restricted free agent

Cross another name off the pending Detroit Lions free agency list. The Lions have re-signed linebacker and special teams stalwart Josh Woods to a new contract.

Woods was slated to become a restricted free agent. As the team did last week with fullback Jason Cabinda, the Lions locked up Woods before needing to apply any tender offer or restriction.

The 25-year-old Woods joined the Lions in September after being let go by the Chicago Bears. He immediately became an indispensable part of Detroit’s special teams, playing 174 snaps in 12 games. Injuries to the LB corps forced Woods onto the field on defense late in the season and he responded with 13 total tackles in his one start, the Week 14 loss to the Broncos.

Terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed.

Lions sign LB Curtis Bolton, TE Jared Pinkney in flurry of roster moves

Curtis Bolton, Jared Pinkney and Jashon Cornell are now all on the 53-man roster after a plethora of moves on Tuesday

It was a very busy day on the NFL’s transaction wire on Tuesday around the league. The Detroit Lions contributed their fair share of roster moves to the log.

To sum it up briefly, the Lions:

Signed LB Curtis Bolton and TE Jared Pinkney to the active 53-man roster

Activated DE Jashon Cornell from the reserve/non-football injury list

Signed WR Juwan Green and TE Ross Travis to the practice squad

Placed LB Josh Woods on injured reserve

Placed TE Brock Wright on the reserve/COVID-19 list

Released CB Chris Williamson from the practice squad

Bolton comes up from the Lions’ own practice squad. He’s played over 30 snaps on special teams as a practice squad elevation the last two weeks. The inside backer will take the place of Woods, who started in Week 14 before getting hurt in the Week 15 matchup against Arizona. His season is over due to his neck injury.

[lawrence-related id=71714]

Pinkney was signed off the Los Angeles Rams’ practice squad to the active 53-man roster. He did spend three weeks in September on the Lions practice squad before emigrating to the Rams.

With Wright going on the reserve/COVID-19 list and the earlier move sending Shane Zylstra to the injured reserve, Pinkney is the only tight end on the active roster and projects to start against the Seahawks in Week 16. He is in his second NFL season as an undrafted free agent from Vanderbilt.

Perhaps the most eye-catching move is Cornell. A 2020 7th-round pick from Ohio State, Cornell has been on the field for just four snaps in two seasons. He’s battled injuries, a three-game NFL suspension and recently the lengthy stint on the NFI list. Cornell flashed quite a bit of pass-rush potential in the summer of 2021 when he was healthy.

4 takeaways from the Lions win over the Vikings

Breaking down four things that stood out from Detroit’s Week 13 win over Minnesota

It’s been a long time since the Detroit Lions treated fans to a victory Monday. The team snapped a losing streak almost exactly one year to the day by beating the Minnesota Vikings, 29-27 on the game’s final play in Week 13.

The win ends all the talk about a potential winless season and was a much-needed reward for the players and coaching staff for sticking together and coaxing the most out of a largely undertalented roster all season.

After enjoying the win and sleeping on the game, here are a few next-day thoughts about Detroit’s win over Minnesota.

Lions sign LB Josh Woods from the Bears practice squad

The Lions poach Woods from the Bears’ practice squad

In the Detroit Lions’ ongoing movement at linebacker, the team has signed Josh Woods to the active 53-man roster from the Chicago Bears practice squad. Head coach Dan Campbell announced the move in his pre-practice press conference on Thursday.

Woods, 25, is in his third NFL season, all with the Bears. He was active in Week 1 for Chicago, playing 12 reps on special teams. Woods appeared in 15 games in 2020 as a fixture on Chicago’s special teams, but has just 46 reps on defense in his three seasons.

The Bears did not use their practice squad protection on Woods this week. Because the Lions signed him to the active roster, Woods must remain with Detroit through at least three game weeks.

While no corollary move has been announced yet, it’s a safe presumption that veteran LB Jamie Collins will be involved in one form or another. Campbell indicated the team is moving on from Collins and trying to trade the 32-year-old.
