Jaguars announce 14 players signed to reserve/future contracts

The Jaguars made the addition of 14 players official Tuesday.

A day after the Jacksonville Jaguars’ 2023 season ended, the team signed 11 players to reserve/future deals, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

More than a month later, the team has finally announced those signings along with a trio of other players. One of those three is kicker Riley Patterson, whose reunion with the Jaguars popped up on the transaction wire a week ago. The other two, tight end Josh Pederson and receiver Seth Williams, spent the 2023 season with Jacksonville.

Reserve/future deals, typically a minimum-salary contract, don’t count against the team’s salary cap or roster limit until the beginning of the next league year. Essentially that means those type of contracts are a way to keep players while roster limits haven’t yet been expanded back to a maximum of 90 players, which will happen when the new league year begins in March.

The notable omission from the list is running back Snoop Conner, who was picked by the Jaguars in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL draft. Here’s all 14 players who were officially added to the Jaguars’ roster Tuesday on reserve/futures contracts:

Jaguars sign 11 players to reserve/future contracts

The Jaguars made moves on Monday to keep more than half of their practice squad players.

The 2023 season is officially over for the Jacksonville Jaguars and they made their first moves to secure a few players for 2024.

Reserve/future deals, which are typically a minimum-salary contract, don’t count against the team’s salary cap or roster limit until the beginning of the next league year. In layman’s terms, they’re a way to keep practice squad players while roster limits haven’t yet been expanded back to a maximum of 90 players.

On Monday, the Jaguars kept more than half of the players who were on the practice squad at the end of the regular season. While there’s still time for the team to add more players via reserve/future deals, notable omissions for now include running back Snoop Conner, tight end Josh Pederson, and quarterback E.J. Perry.

Instead, these are the 11 players the Jaguars secured Monday, via the NFL’s transaction wire:

Jaguars elevate TE Josh Pederson from practice squad for Week 15

Josh Pederson’s elevation likely means Brenton Strange will miss a third straight game.

For the third straight week, Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Josh Pederson has been elevated from the practice squad to the active roster.

Pederson, son of Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson, has temporarily filled in as the team’s third tight end while rookie Brenton Strange has been dealing with a foot injury. Strange returned to the practice field this week on a limited basis and is questionable for Week 15 against the Baltimore Ravens. The activation of Pederson likely means Strange will sit out once again.

A practice squad player can be elevated to the active roster just three times per season. If the Jaguars hope to get Pederson on the field again after Sunday, the team would have to sign the tight end to the active roster.

In the last two weeks, Pederson has been on the field for 20 snaps, only seven of which came on offense. He has not recorded a reception.

Prior to joining the Jaguars in the offseason, Pederson had brief stints with the San Francisco 49ers, New Orleans Saints, and Kansas City Chiefs, but never saw regular season action with any of those three teams. He also played for the USFL’s Houston Gamblers.

Travis Etienne, Tyson Campbell active vs. Bengals in Week 13

The Jaguars listed three of their four questionable players as active.

The Jacksonville Jaguars listed four players as questionable Saturday, but three of them, including running back Travis Etienne Jr., are officially active for Monday Night Football against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The only player missing the Week 13 game due to injury is tight end Brenton Strange, who suffered a foot injury in practice.

The team elevated tight end Josh Pederson, son of head coach Doug Pederson, from the practice squad Monday.

Another notable player absent from the list of inactives is defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton. After missing the first couple months of the season due to a bacterial infection, Hamilton returned in Week 8. However, he played just two games before he was a healthy scratch in the last two weeks.

Now Hamilton is set to make his return to the lineup and the team sat down Angelo Blackson, making room for plenty of snaps.

For the Bengals, there were no big surprises.

On Monday, the Bengals placed starting cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt.

Jaguars elevate TE Josh Pederson to active roster for Week 13

Josh Pederson, son of Doug Pederson, is set to play in his first NFL regular season game.

Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Josh Pederson, son of head coach Doug Pederson, was elevated from the practice squad to the active roster for a Week 13 game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Pederson, 26, joined the Jaguars in the 2023 offseason after a stint with the USFL’s Houston Gamblers. He previously spent time on the rosters of the San Francisco 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs, and New Orleans, but is set to play in his first ever regular season NFL game.

The elevation of Pederson likely means that Luke Farrell and/or Brenton Strange will be unavailable Monday night. Farrell was limited in all three of the team’s practices and is listed as questionable. Strange is also questionable after suffering a foot injury in practice that caused him to sit out the team’s Saturday session.

Starting tight end Evan Engram is the team’s primary pass catching option at the position. Farrell has been a blocker on 72.6 percent of his offensive snaps and Strange has blocked on 69.3 percent of his snaps.

Jaguars practice squad tracker: 17 signings announced

The Jaguars finalized their initial 17-man practice squad Wednesday and Thursday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars set their 53-man roster Tuesday and finalized their 17-player practice squad Wednesday and Thursday.

While practice squad players aren’t eligible to play on Sundays unless they’re elevated to the active roster, keeping them gives the Jaguars a chance to develop a player or keep them in the building in the event that injuries open an opportunity.

Last season, the Jaguars got meaningful contributions out of defensive tackle Corey Peters, who spent time on the practice squad before moving up midseason. This year, Jacksonville has cornerback Gregory Junior on the active roster after giving the 2022 sixth-rounder a year to grow on the practice squad.

Here’s the Jaguars’ initial 2023 practice squad:

Jaguars 2023 roster review: TE Josh Pederson

Josh Pederson made three previous NFL stops before getting the chance to play for his dad in Jacksonville.

The brunt of the offseason is in the books and training camp is underway. Join us for a player-by-player review of the Jaguars roster ahead of the 2023 season.

When tight end Josh Pederson’s collegiate career at Louisiana-Monroe ended, his father, Doug Pederson, was out of a job. The tight end still found NFL work, though, spending time with the San Francisco 49ers, New Orleans Saints, and Kansas City Chiefs in 2021 and early in 2022.

Pederson turned to the USFL, where he caught 24 passes for 325 yards during a stint with the Houston Gamblers.

That impressive season in Houston earned Pederson another shot at the NFL, and this time, a chance to play for his dad.

Unfortunately for Pederson, there isn’t much room for another tight end on the Jacksonville roster. To earn a spot, he’d likely have to beat out Gerrit Prince, who has impressed throughout camp.

Contract (2023): $750,000 base salary, $750,000 cap hit.

Acquired: The Jaguars signed Pederson as a veteran free agent on July 10, 2023.

Jaguars sign Doug Pederson’s son, TE Josh Pederson

Former 49ers, Saints, and Chiefs tight end Josh Pederson is joining his dad’s team in Jacksonville.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made the addition of tight end Josh Pederson official on Monday. To make room on the roster for Pederson, the Jaguars released undrafted rookie tight end Leonard Taylor.

Pederson, 25, is the son of Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson and previously spent time on the rosters of the San Francisco 49ers, New Orleans Saints, and Kansas City Chiefs, although he never made an appearance in a regular season game with any of those teams.

Most recently, Pederson played for the Houston Gamblers of the United States Football League (USFL). In 10 games with the Gamblers, Pederson recorded 24 receptions for 325 yards, second most on the team.

Prior to his professional career, Pederson was a two-time All-Sun Belt selection during his time with the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks.

Rumors that Pederson would join his father’s team in Jacksonville first gathered steam late last week when Draft Diamonds reported that the Jaguars planned to sign the tight end.

8 former New Orleans Saints players get second shot with USFL teams

8 former New Orleans Saints players are getting a second shot with USFL teams, including the New Orleans Breakers:

The 2023 XFL season is drawing to a close, but the upstart USFL is just getting started. With multiple spring leagues up and running, many former New Orleans Saints players are getting another opportunity to keep pursuing their pro football careers.

We’ve already discussed the dozens of former Saints players making a go of it with the XFL. Now let’s shift focus to the USFL, where at least eight former members of the black and gold are getting a second shot:

Chiefs sign TE Josh Pederson on reserve/future contract

The #Chiefs have signed the son of #Jaguars HC Doug Pederson to a reserve/future contract.

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed another tight end to a reserve/future contract after having him in for a workout a week ago.

According to the NFL’s official personnel notice for Friday, the Chiefs have signed TE Josh Pederson on a reserve/future deal. This is a notable signing because Josh is the son of former Chiefs assistant coach and new Jaguars HC Doug Pederson.

A First-Team All-Sun Belt tight end at Louisiana Monroe, Josh appeared in 44 games with 33 starts during his 5-year career, recording 99 catches for 1,191 yards and 11 touchdowns. Despite his productive collegiate career, the 6-5 and 235-pound tight end went undrafted following the 2021 NFL draft. He caught on with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent during the offseason, but he was released during 53-man roster cuts. He signed with the New Orleans Saints shortly after his departure from San Francisco, but he didn’t last too long on their roster.

The Chiefs have already signed four tight ends to reserve/future contracts ahead of the 2022 offseason. That group includes Nakia Griffin-Stewart, Mark Vital, Matt Bushman and Jordan Franks. They have two players at the position — Blake Bell (unrestricted) and Jody Fortson (exclusive rights) — slated to become free agents in March.

Pederson should have the opportunity to compete this offseason, but the Chiefs are clearly looking to make it a competition with all of the depth they’ve added so far.
