Jaguars announce 14 players signed to reserve/future contracts

The Jaguars made the addition of 14 players official Tuesday.

A day after the Jacksonville Jaguars’ 2023 season ended, the team signed 11 players to reserve/future deals, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

More than a month later, the team has finally announced those signings along with a trio of other players. One of those three is kicker Riley Patterson, whose reunion with the Jaguars popped up on the transaction wire a week ago. The other two, tight end Josh Pederson and receiver Seth Williams, spent the 2023 season with Jacksonville.

Reserve/future deals, typically a minimum-salary contract, don’t count against the team’s salary cap or roster limit until the beginning of the next league year. Essentially that means those type of contracts are a way to keep players while roster limits haven’t yet been expanded back to a maximum of 90 players, which will happen when the new league year begins in March.

The notable omission from the list is running back Snoop Conner, who was picked by the Jaguars in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL draft. Here’s all 14 players who were officially added to the Jaguars’ roster Tuesday on reserve/futures contracts:

Jaguars 2023 roster review: OL Chandler Brewer

Chandler Brewer was one of two veteran offensive linemen signed by the Jaguars in free agency this offseason.

The brunt of the offseason is in the books and training camp is coming soon. Join us in the NFL’s dead zone with a player-by-player review of the Jaguars roster ahead of the 2023 season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made big changes at offensive tackle during the offseason, allowing starting right tackle Jawaan Taylor to walk in free agency and replacing him with first-round pick Anton Harrison. Furthermore, a suspension for left tackle Cam Robinson has put a microscope on Walker Little, who appears primed to be the long-term solution as Trevor Lawrence’s blindside blocker.

All that attention on the starting lineup has made an intriguing battle for the other spots on the depth chart fly under the radar.

Chandler Brewer was one of two veteran free agents, along with Josh Wells, who was signed by the Jaguars to address depth.

The former Los Angeles Rams tackle, who overcame non-Hodgkin lymphoma in college, has 13 career games and four starts under his belt.

Contract (2023): $1.01 million base salary, $50,000 signing bonus, $52,500 roster bonus, $1,112,500 cap hit.

Acquired: Jaguars signed Brewer in free agency on April 5, 2023.

Jaguars sign former Rams OL Chandler Brewer

Chandler Brewer is heading to the Jaguars, signing with Jacksonville as a free agent

Another offensive lineman has made his way out of Los Angeles. The Jacksonville Jaguars announced on Wednesday that they have signed Chandler Brewer as a free agent. Brewer joins David Edwards as the second offensive lineman to leave the Rams in free agency this year.

The terms of Brewer’s contract were not disclosed.

The Rams could have easily retained Brewer if they wanted to, considering he was a restricted free agent. They chose not to tender him, however, allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent.

The Rams did re-sign Coleman Shelton, so that move likely resulted in them letting Brewer leave after four seasons with the team. He signed with the Rams as an undrafted rookie in 2019 and was active for seven games that year.

He did not appear in any games in 2020 after opting out due to COVID-19 concerns. He then spent the 2021 season on the practice squad. Last season, he played six games and made four total starts.

Jaguars sign former Rams guard Chandler Brewer

The Jaguars added another offensive lineman to the roster Wednesday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars signed former Los Angeles Rams offensive lineman Chandler Brewer, the team announced Wednesday.

Brewer, 25, signed with the Rams as an undrafted free agent following the 2019 NFL Draft and spent the first four seasons of his career with the team. Brewer played in only 13 games during his time with the Rams and made four starts at right guard during the 2022 season.

In 245 career snaps, Brewer hasn’t allowed a sack and was credited with allowing one hit, via Pro Football Focus.

The Jaguars’ starting offensive line is largely in place with Cam Robinson and Walker Little expected to start at the tackle positions, Luke Fortner at center, and Brandon Scherff at right guard. The left guard role will likely be decided in training camp with Ben Bartch and Tyler Shatley currently set to battle for the spot.

Brewer is a versatile lineman with experience at both guard and tackle, who will likely battle for a backup role in Jacksonville.

Details of Brewer’s contract with the Jaguars haven’t yet been revealed.

Rams waive Bobby Evans, activate Chandler Brewer

The Rams are moving on from Bobby Evans, waiving him from the 53-man roster with Chandler Brewer on his way back

The Los Angeles Rams made three roster moves ahead of Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers, including the release of Bobby Evans. He’s been waived from the 53-man roster and replaced by Chandler Brewer, who’s officially activated off injured reserve. The Rams also elevated Jared Pinkney from the practice squad for Week 17.

Evans was a third-round pick out of Oklahoma in 2019, so he’s the second player from that class to be cut this season; Darrell Henderson Jr. was waived last month. Evans was active for 12 games and started four games, struggling mightily throughout the year. He was only in line to be a backup this year but injuries forced him into a starting role.

Brewer started two games in Weeks 9 and 10, playing every snap in each of those games before injuring his knee and landing on IR. With Brian Allen out, Brewer provides depth along the offensive line behind the starters and could compete with Oday Aboushi or Matt Skura for a starting spot at guard.

Rams designate Chandler Brewer to return from IR, sign two WRs to practice squad

The Rams designated Chandler Brewer to return from IR and they signed two WRs to their practice squad on Thursday.

The Los Angeles Rams are thin along the offensive line, but they could be getting some help entering Week 16. Besides adding two wide receivers to their practice squad on Thursday, the Rams designated Chandler Brewer to return from injured reserve.

Brewer returned to practice on Thursday after being on injured reserve since Week 11. The versatile offensive lineman started for the Rams in Weeks 9 and 10 before suffering a knee injury against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 10 despite playing in 100 percent of the offensive snaps in that game.

With Brian Allen missing the rest of the season, Coleman Shelton is expected to move to the center position. That would mean that either Brewer or Oday Aboushi will draw the start at right guard on Sunday versus the Denver Broncos.

The two wide receivers the Rams added to their practice squad (likely due to Ben Skowronek being ruled out for the rest of the season) were Lance Lenoir and Jerreth Sterns. Lenoir has logged only eight offensive snaps in his six-year career and he was most recently waived by the Philadelphia Eagles back in August.

Meanwhile, Sterns is an undrafted rookie out of Western Kentucky that spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in training camp before being waived. Sterns recorded 150 receptions for 1,902 yards and 17 touchdowns in his lone season with Western Kentucky in 2021.

Rams designate David Edwards to return, put Cooper Kupp and 2 others on IR

The Rams designated David Edwards to return and put 3 other players on injured reserve, including Cooper Kupp

The endless shuffling of the Rams’ offensive line will continue this week. On Wednesday, the team made four roster moves, three of which involved the O-line.

The Rams designated David Edwards to return from injured reserve, noting that he practiced on Wednesday. They now have 21 days to activate him from IR. He’s been out since Week 5 due to a concussion but is working his way back.

Additionally, Los Angeles put three players on IR, all of whom were starters in Week 10: Cooper Kupp, Alaric Jackson and Chandler Brewer. Jackson is out for the year with blood clots, while Brewer will be sidelined 4-6 weeks due to a knee injury.

Kupp has an ankle injury that requires surgery, so he’ll be out at least four weeks while on injured reserve.

Assuming Edwards returns from IR and is activated this week, the Rams will have two other open roster spots after losing Kupp, Brewer and Jackson.

Rams OL Chandler Brewer out 4-6 weeks due to knee injury

Another week, another injury to the Rams’ offensive line

In the first nine games of the season, the Rams started nine different offensive line combinations. That number will climb to at least 10 this week against the Saints.

Sean McVay said on Tuesday that Chandler Brewer, who started at right guard on Sunday, will miss 4-6 weeks due to a knee injury. The injury will require surgery and he will presumably be placed on injured reserve.

Brewer has started the last two games for the Rams, helping fill in for Coleman Shelton and David Edwards at guard. He’s the latest offensive lineman to go down for Los Angeles, adding to an ever-growing list of injuries up front.

McVay did say the Rams hope to get David Edwards back from his concussion soon, but it’s unclear when he might return to the starting lineup. With Brewer out, the Rams may need to turn back to Bobby Evans or Oday Aboushi for the time being.

Rams elevate Chandler Brewer and Malcolm Brown to active roster ahead of Week 4 matchup vs. 49ers

The Rams elevated Chandler Brewer and Malcolm Brown to the active roster ahead of their matchup against the 49ers in Week 4.

The Los Angeles Rams are dealing with injuries at various positions and they are activating a couple of players to the active roster. With hours to go until the Rams take on the 49ers on Monday Night Football to conclude Week 4, Chandler Brewer and Malcolm Brown were promoted to the active roster.

The Rams likely activated Brewer to the team due to not having Brian Allen or David Edwards available in the interior of their offensive line this week, along with Tremayne Anchrum being out for the season. Brewer hasn’t played in a game since 2019, but he’s been with Los Angeles for multiple years, so he’s accustomed to Sean McVay’s offense.

Meanwhile, it was expected that Brown would join the active roster this week given McVay’s comments following the team’s Week 3 win over the Arizona Cardinals. Cam Akers and Darrell Henderson aren’t dealing with any injuries that we know of, however, the Rams likely want to have an experienced running back behind them.

While Brewer and Brown will join the active roster on Monday night versus the 49ers, it remains to be seen if they’ll see any snaps.

Rams OL Chandler Brewer opts out of 2020 season

The Rams have their first opt-out of 2020 season.

The Los Angeles Rams have their first opt-out of the season. The team announced Friday that offensive lineman Chandler Brewer has opted out of the 2020 season over concerns for the coronavirus pandemic.

Brewer has a history of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which brings added concerns into the equation.

“With my history with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, I am at high risk and will opt out of playing in the NFL this season,” Brewer said in a statement. “I would like to thank the Rams for their support and I look forward to getting back on the field in 2021 and beyond.”

Brewer is a reserve offensive lineman who was going to be in the mix for a roster spot this season. The Rams signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2019. He began the year on the practice squad but was added to the active roster in November and made his debut against the Bears.
