Ravens work out veteran quarterback on Monday

The Ravens worked out a veteran quarterback on Monday

The Baltimore Ravens suffered a numerous amount of injuries in 2021. Those ailments were one of the many reasons why the team finished the year with an 8-9 record and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2017.

One of the positions that Baltimore suffered injuries at was quarterback. Star Lamar Jackson went down in Week 14 against the Cleveland Browns with an ankle injury that would effectively end his season, and Tyler Huntley was called upon to lead the Ravens’ offense from there. However, it never hurts to have more depth, and on Monday Baltimore worked out former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Joshua Dobbs.

Dobbs has spent most of his NFL career in Pittsburgh, but also had a stint in Jacksonville with the Jaguars. He has appeared in five games over the course of his career, throwing for 45 yards and one interception.

2021 Hall of Fame game: Joshua Dobbs against Dallas

A pair of former Tennessee football players were in action during the 2021 Hall of Fame game Thursday in Canton, Ohio.

Joshua Dobbs and Cameron Sutton played for the Steelers in their, 16-3, victory over Dallas.

Dobbs, who is listed as the No. 4 quarterback on Pittsburgh’s depth chart, is behind Ben Roethlisberger, Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins.

Roethlisberger did not play against the Cowboys. Dobbs was 4-for-6, totaling 37 yards and one touchdown pass.

Sutton recorded one tackle in limited action against the Cowboys, who opened an early 3-0 lead before surrendering 16 unanswered points.

The Steelers will kick off the season Sept. 12 at Buffalo.

2 advantages of Steelers’ Ben Roethlisberger on reserve/COVID-19 list

There are benefits to Big Ben not physically being with the team this week.

Ben Roethlisberger was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Tuesday. He tested negative for the virus but was in close contact with tight end Vance McDonald who returned a positive test on Monday.

Linebacker Vince Williams, running back Jaylen Samuels and offensive lineman Jerald Hawkins was also in close contact with McDonald and tested negative.

Head coach Mike Tomlin said that each will work remotely this week.

Everyone is thankful that only one player was directly affected so far, and there was a collective sigh of relief, especially when Ben’s test was negative. There are a couple of advantages to their star quarterback not being able to practice this week.

Week 9 Inactives, Captains: Cowboys still won’t play Anae, Robinson but Elliott to go

With the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers getting ready for kickoff in Arlington, the official inactive lists have been released.

With the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers getting ready for kickoff in Arlington, the official inactive lists have been released. Ezekiel Elliott, after going through a closely monitored pregame workout routine, is indeed active despite being limited in practice throughout the week. He has yet to miss a game due to injury in his career.

There was some thought that the soft tank would be on for a team that has nothing meaningful to play for the rest of the year, but the team apparently hasn’t reached that point yet, though that could change. The official inactive list can be seen below:

Linebacker Joe Thomas is out with a wrist injury despite returning to practice, though in a limited fashion, on Friday. It will presumably be Sean Lee who fills his shoes.

Defensive end Aldon Smith, who has been dealing with an ailing knee for a couple of weeks will be available for use, though it’s possible he’s on a limited pitch count with Randy Gregory on the gameday roster. Rookie defensive back Reggie Robinson is still not able to get onto the active roster so far this year. The fourth-round pick has been healthy but a scratch all season. Likewise, fifth-round DE Bradlee Anae is inactive as well.

For the Steelers, Defensive tackle Tyson Alualu is out, though that had been reported earlier in the week, which will give the interior of the Dallas line a bit of a break. His replacement is rookie Carlos Davis, a seventh-round pick out of Nebraska.

Week 9 Captains

Meanwhile, the choices for captains for the Cowboys must be getting slim, because it’s a ragtag bunch of players getting the nod this week. Wide receiver Cedrick Wilson, defensive tackle Antwaun Woods and C.J. Goodwin make up that crew.

Three former Vols will not play Sunday

Story detailing the postponement of Titans game against the Steelers. Three former Vols are on Pittsburgh’s roster.

NASHVILLE — The National Football League officially made its first postponement due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The league announced Thursday that it would postpone the game between Pittsburgh Steelers and Tennessee until later this season, due to a coronavirus outbreak in the Titans’ organization.

Several Tennessee players and team personnel have tested positive for the virus since the Titans played Minnesota last week.

A postponement of the game between two undefeated teams means that a trio of former Vols will not be in action Sunday.

Backup quarterback Joshua Dobbs, defensive back Cameron Sutton and punter Dustin Colquitt all play for the Steelers.

The Steelers desperately needed depth and they got it on Sunday

The Steelers made some wise moves to bolster depth but not without the release of a 2019 fan favorite.

The Steelers continue to show that they’re pulling out all of the stops to go big or go home in 2020. On Sunday, the team re-signed their former backup quarterback Josh Dobbs and starting safety Sean Davis to bolster the depth of their respective positions.

Devlin “Duck” Hodges was released to make room for Dobbs, and the corresponding move for Davis was safety Curtis Riley. Pittsburgh’s hope is to be able to put Riley back on the practice squad.

Davis had just signed a two-year contract with the Washington Football Team in March.

Punter dilemma?

News came down Saturday that the Steelers were bringing in punter Dustin Colquitt for a tryout to potentially supplant Jordan Berry. Colquitt has played 15 seasons to Berry’s five, but they have similar stats over the last few years. Though Colquitt has 652 fewer punt yards than Berry’s 14,495, Colquitt’s is the more consistent of the two.

Dobbs didn’t play at all for the Jaguars in 2019 and appeared in just five games in 2018. According to Pro Football Reference, he had a 50 percent completion rate and threw an interception.

Davis entered the 2019 season at free safety for the Steelers on the final year of his rookie deal. He suffered a shoulder injury and was placed on injured reserve on Sept. 17, 2019. Following his injury, the Steelers traded their first-round pick to the Miami Dolphins for Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Beyond his three-interception, 92-tackle 2017 season, Davis hadn’t lived up to his second-round draft selection. Despite that, Pittsburgh was woefully thin depth-wise after his departure. Though he didn’t perform to expectations, he won’t be expected to start this time around. When Davis is in the game, at least he’ll know the system, which is a bonus — especially this season. Hopefully lessening his load will get more out of him, so to speak.

As all claimed players do, each will have to pass a physical and go through COVID-19 testing protocols.

The Steelers’ new signing created an awkward situation involving a former ‘Bachelor’ contestant

Both Josh Dobbs and Mason Rudolph have dated former Bachelor contestant Hannah Ann.

The Steelers made a transaction Sunday that will have little bearing on the NFL landscape in 2020 but could rock the Pittsburgh quarterback room.

OK, I’m being a little dramatic but things could get pretty awkward after the team signed QB Josh Dobbs . You see, Dobbs was dating Bachelor finalist Hannah Ann Sluss back in March. Apparently, things didn’t work out between the two because Hannah Ann confirmed in May that she was dating Steelers backup Mason Rudolph.

That’s right, folks! We got ourselves a full-blown love triangle in the Steel City. The potentially awkward situation was first pointed out by ESPN’s Brooke Pryor…

I have no horse in this race, but Rudolph is a better match for Hannah Ann, in my opinion. Dobbs is a literal rocket scientist, and … how do I put this nicely: During her time on The Bachelor, Hannah Ann didn’t come off like someone who would be very interested in such a daunting academic pursuit. Hannah Ann and Mason have a lot more in common, anyway. Like how both were second choices who disappointed when given a brief stint in the spotlight.

Rudolph also has some things in common with the Bachelor on Hannah Ann’s season, Peter Weber. Like Peter, the most interesting thing about Rudolph’s season involved him taking a hit to the head. Only in Peter’s case, it was a golf cart playing the role of Myles Garrett.

If Rudolph and Dobbs can’t get along, ESPN’s Mina Kimes has figured out the best way to sort out any potential issues…

I would suggest one change to the plan: Have Ben Roethlisberger take the two on the date instead of Tomlin. Big Ben loves drama.

VFL Joshua Dobbs returns to Pittsburgh

Dobbs is reunited with the team that drafted him in 2017.

It didn’t take long for former Tennessee star quarterback Joshua Dobbs to find a new, but familiar NFL home after being cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday.

Dobbs was claimed off waivers by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, the same team that drafted him with the No. 135 pick in the 2017 NFL draft.

The 25-year-old was traded to Jacksonville for a fifth-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft before the start of the 2019 season, and did not play a snap for the Jaguars while backing up Nick Foles and Gardner Minshew.

He returns to Pittsburgh, where he spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons as a backup quarterback. Dobbs has only attempted 12 passes in his NFL career, with all 12 coming from the five games he appeared in for the Steelers in 2018. Dobbs completed six of those passes for 43 yards and an interception. He has yet to throw a touchdown in his NFL career.

A stellar collegiate career in Knoxville saw Dobbs throw for over 7,000 yards from 2013-16, with 53 career passing touchdowns and 32 rushing touchdowns.

VFL Joshua Dobbs cut by Jacksonville.

JACKSONVILLE — Former University of Tennessee quarterback Joshua Dobbs was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday.

Dobbs, who came into the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers, was cut as Jacksonville trimmed its roster to 53 players in preparation for the upcoming 2020 season that begins this week.

The Jaguars traded for Dobbs last season, but he did not see the field after going to North Florida.

Dobbs entered the NFL in 2017 as he was drafted by the Steelers in the fourth round that year. He was selected with 135th overall pick.

In 2019, Dobbs was traded to the Jaguars for a 2020 fifth-round draft pick.

He has played sparingly as a pro, appearing in six games, all with the Steelers in 2018.

Dobbs is 6-for-12 with 43 yards in his career. He has one interception and has not thrown for a touchdown pass in the NFL.
