Report: Patriots sign DB Sean Davis to practice squad

The Patriots will take a closer look at Sean Davis on the practice squad.

The New England Patriots are signing defensive back Sean Davis, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Davis has primarily played safety during his NFL career, but has the versatility to play cornerback.

The Patriots will be his fifth team after stints with the Pittsburght Steelers (2016-19, 2020), the Washington Football Team (2020), the Indianapolis Colts (2021) and the Cincinatti Bengals (2021). Davis has 259 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 21 pass deflections, five interceptions and a forced fumble on his career. He entered the NFL as a second-round pick out of Maryland.

Davis joined a Patriots secondary that struggled in Week 5 against the Houston Texans, allowing 312 yards and three touchdowns to rookie quarterback Davis Mills.

Colts sign S Andrew Sendejo

Colts signed S Andrew Sendejo and waived CB Chris Wilcox on Tuesday.

The Indianapolis Colts announced Tuesday they signed veteran free agent safety Andrew Sendejo. To make room on the roster, the team waived cornerback Chris Wilcox. The team has also opened up a spot on the practice squad after releasing safety Sean Davis.

Sendejo was one of seven players to attend a tryout for the Colts on Monday, which included four other safeties.

Sendejo went undrafted out of Rice in 2010 but has since had quite the journeyman career in the NFL after a brief stint with the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League.

Sendejo has 75 career starts across 124 total games played. The teams that Sendejo has been a part of include the New Orleans Saints (2010), the Dallas Cowboys (2010), the New York Jets (2011), the Minnesota Vikings (2011-2019), the Philadelphia Eagles (2019), and the Cleveland Browns (2020).

In those 124 games played, Sendejo has compiled 446 tackles, eight tackles for a loss, two sacks, 23 passes defended, nine interceptions, two forced fumbles with three recoveries as well.

Sendejo will look to be a veteran voice of experience in a very young secondary room for the Colts coming off a rough start to its 2021 season. The team seems keen on adding experience to its depth since this off-season and this is yet another signing that enforces that point.

Colts elevate C Joey Hunt, S Sean Davis from practice squad

Colts made a roster move before the Week 1 matchup.

The Indianapolis Colts elevated center Joey Hunt and safety Sean Davis from the practice squad to the active roster for the Week 1 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, the team announced Saturday.

Using their two extra slots on the active roster for game day, the Colts will be doing this every week. Hunt may be brought up for depth purposes given that guard Danny Pinter is questionable with a foot injury. If Pinter can’t go, Hunt will serve as the backup center to Ryan Kelly.

Davis will be the fourth safety in the rotation but likely to see most of his reps on special teams. The Colts could also use cornerback T.J. Carrie as a safety in dime packages.

Both Hunt and Davis were two of the players the Colts protected on the practice squad this week.

The Colts are looking to snap a seven-game losing streak in regular-season openers and will kick off at 1:00 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Colts protect 3 players on practice squad

The Colts protected 3 players on the practice squad for Week 1.

The Indianapolis Colts protected safety Sean Davis, quarterback Brett Hundley and center Joey Hunt on the practice squad, per the league’s transaction wire on Tuesday.

With Carson Wentz and Jacob Eason currently the only healthy quarterbacks on the active roster, it’s wise for the Colts to protect Hundley, who signed with the team during training camp. Rookie Sam Ehlinger is currently on the injured reserve list recovering from a sprained knee and will miss at least the first three games of the season.

Each week, the Colts are allowed to protect up to four players on the practice squad. This prohibits other teams from signing a player off the practice squad and onto their active roster. The rest of the practice squad is still available to other teams.

These players will be protected on the practice squad through the end of the game on Sunday of each week. Once that ends, teams have the opportunity to sign a player until the protections are set on Tuesday of the following week.

Colts’ 2021 training camp preview: Safety

Previewing the safety position ahead of Colts training camp.

The Indianapolis Colts will officially begin training camp next week as they prepare for the arrival of the 2021 regular season.

As the defense looks to make a leap into one of the premier units across the league, the safety room will be led by a duo of young playmakers who could be manning their positions for years to come.

There have been some slight additions to the room during the offseason, including a signing of a veteran and the selection of a rookie in the draft.

Here’s our preview for the safety position entering training camp:

5 things to know about new Colts S Sean Davis

Everything to know about Indy’s new safety.

The Indianapolis Colts added some versatility and experience to the secondary by bringing in veteran safety Sean Davis on a one-year deal.

Davis is likely to take the role behind starters Khari Willis and Julian Blackmon in the secondary while All-Pro special teamer George Odum will continue to be an impact player in that phase of the game.

Here are five things to know about the Colts’ new safety:

Former Steelers S Sean Davis headed to Colts via free agency

Unrestricted free agent Sean Davis has found a new team in the Indianapolis Colts.

It wasn’t long into his Thursday morning visit with the Indianapolis Colts that Sean Davis’s agreed to sign with the team.

Via ESPN’s Adam Schefter, per Davis’ agent Drew Rosenhaus, the Colts will ink the former Steelers safety to a one-year contract.

Davis, once a second-round draft pick by Pittsburgh, played in 64 games with 42 starts. During that span, he logged five interceptions, 21 pass breakups, a forced fumble and one recovered. He also contributed 2.5 sacks, 259 tackles (11 for loss) and seven quarterback hits.

After two strong second and third years, a shoulder injury ended Davis’s season in 2019. He signed with the Washington Football Team as a free agent but never logged a snap. Davis returned to Pittsburgh before the start of the 2020 season.

Safety was not a primary need for the Colts, so it’s expected that he’ll offer positional depth.

Colts to sign S Sean Davis to one-year deal

Colts are bringing in another vet.

The Indianapolis Colts are set to sign veteran safety Sean Davis to a one-year deal, first reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Davis visited the Colts on Thursday and it seems that visit went so well Chris Ballard didn’t want him leaving without a deal. Safety isn’t a massive need for the Colts but Davis is versatile and can play behind Julian Blackmon and Khari Willis.

Davis was a second-round pick with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2016 NFL draft and was a starter for three seasons. A shoulder injury ended his 2019 season prematurely and hit free agency following the campaign.

Davis signed a one-year deal with the Washington Football Team but was cut and eventually re-signed with the Steelers. Though he wasn’t in the rotation in the safety room all that much in 2020, Davis spent plenty of time on special teams, which is a key part of the safety position for the Colts.

With Tavon Wilson signing with the San Francisco 49ers and Malik Hooker taking a visit with the Dallas Cowboys, the Colts do need some depth at safety.

Davis will be joining Blackmon, Willis and All-Pro special teamer George Odum in the safety room.

Bills to host Sean Davis on free-agent visit

Safety Sean Davis to have free-agent visit with Buffalo Bills.

The Buffalo Bills might be looking to add depth in their secondary and special teams.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Friday, the Bills are hosting safety Sean Davis on a free-agent visit.

Davis, 27, started his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers as a 2016 second-round pick. In his first three years, he played starting snaps on defense until a shoulder injury ended his season after one game in 2019.

After that season, Davis briefly signed with the Washington Football Team. He was cut prior to 2020 and re-signed with the Steelers. However, he only played a special teams role in 2020.

With the Bills, he would likely play a similar role. Reserve safety Dean Marlowe has yet to re-sign with the Bills as well. The starting spots are also currently locked up by Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer, respectively.

The Steelers desperately needed depth and they got it on Sunday

The Steelers made some wise moves to bolster depth but not without the release of a 2019 fan favorite.

The Steelers continue to show that they’re pulling out all of the stops to go big or go home in 2020. On Sunday, the team re-signed their former backup quarterback Josh Dobbs and starting safety Sean Davis to bolster the depth of their respective positions.

Devlin “Duck” Hodges was released to make room for Dobbs, and the corresponding move for Davis was safety Curtis Riley. Pittsburgh’s hope is to be able to put Riley back on the practice squad.

Davis had just signed a two-year contract with the Washington Football Team in March.

Punter dilemma?

News came down Saturday that the Steelers were bringing in punter Dustin Colquitt for a tryout to potentially supplant Jordan Berry. Colquitt has played 15 seasons to Berry’s five, but they have similar stats over the last few years. Though Colquitt has 652 fewer punt yards than Berry’s 14,495, Colquitt’s is the more consistent of the two.

Dobbs didn’t play at all for the Jaguars in 2019 and appeared in just five games in 2018. According to Pro Football Reference, he had a 50 percent completion rate and threw an interception.

Davis entered the 2019 season at free safety for the Steelers on the final year of his rookie deal. He suffered a shoulder injury and was placed on injured reserve on Sept. 17, 2019. Following his injury, the Steelers traded their first-round pick to the Miami Dolphins for Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Beyond his three-interception, 92-tackle 2017 season, Davis hadn’t lived up to his second-round draft selection. Despite that, Pittsburgh was woefully thin depth-wise after his departure. Though he didn’t perform to expectations, he won’t be expected to start this time around. When Davis is in the game, at least he’ll know the system, which is a bonus — especially this season. Hopefully lessening his load will get more out of him, so to speak.

As all claimed players do, each will have to pass a physical and go through COVID-19 testing protocols.
