Texas commit Arch Manning is recruiting program-changing players

The Manning family is pushing to bring Anthony Hill to Texas.

Arch Manning is pushing hard to build a championship roster at the University of Texas.

Five-star linebacker Anthony Hill appears to be one of Arch Manning’s primary targets. Hill’s recruitment to Texas seems to be a family effort by the Manning family.

Hill would figure to be one of the cornerstone players for Texas in the 2023 class. On the defensive side, Texas is pushing for a few more highly coveted recruits. Gerry Hamilton of Inside Texas placed another prediction in favor of Texas for four-star cornerback Malik Muhammad.

Texas is in the hunt for a major potential secondary haul that at the top end could include Muhammad, Jordan Matthews, and Javien Toviano. The trio would be a lethal combination to add to five-star safety commit Derek Williams Jr.

The back end of the 2023 defensive class could be taking shape soon. If Texas can bring in more talent on the defensive line, they have the foundation of a strong defense heading into the SEC.

4-star Louisiana CB talks ‘eye-opening’ Clemson offer

A four-star cornerback from The Pelican State in the 2023 class added Clemson to his offer list Wednesday.

Woodlawn’s (Baton Rouge, LA.) Jordan Matthews announced the offer from the Tigers, despite having not been on campus. Matthews spoke with Clemson cornerbacks coach Mike Reed Wednesday, who made a rare exception in offering the Louisiana-based corner.

“He usually waits to offer guys when they’re on campus and visit Clemson and everything, but with my personal situation, I couldn’t make the unofficial visit,” Matthews told The Clemson Insider Thursday. “He offered me because he really liked me and they don’t do that to many players, but I feel like I must be more special to them for them sticking out their hand and offering me.”

What did that mean to Matthews?

“I just think it was eye-opening,” he said. “They usually don’t do this for other guys and everything and they really want to take me serious now.”

Matthews didn’t plan an unofficial visit to Clemson because he had so many other things going on in the month of June, which is already pretty booked up for him. When we spoke with him on Thursday, Matthews was getting ready to leave for the University of Michigan. He’s also planning to visit Stanford on June 18 and the University of Tennessee on June 24.

Now that Matthews has an offer from Clemson, he said that he could probably see about taking either an unofficial or official visit in July or even during the season.

“I’m considering them,” Matthews said of Clemson. “I know that they came on kind of late, but for them to offer me without me being on campus, it was eye-opening and I will definitely be considering them.”

Matthews is looking to make a decision in late July, prior to his senior season. He plans to be an early enrollee and wants to be able to enjoy his last semester of high school without worrying about recruiting.

When he eventually makes his college decision, how he will be developed will certainly be a factor in his decision. Reed’s ability to develop players at the cornerback position and consistently send them to the NFL is also something that Matthews will take under consideration when he makes an eventual decision.

When Matthews posted his offer on Twitter, he used a picture of former Clemson standout AJ Terrell; that was no coincidence.

Terrell is a long corner that Matthews looks up to.

“He plays for the Falcons now and he has my body style and everything,” Matthews said, “and to think that Coach Reed can develop guys like that and ship them in the first round in the league, it’s a great attribute of his.”

“He’s a very straightforward guy,” Matthews said of Reed. “He’s gonna give it to you real and say facts. I feel like it’s a lot of coaches that beat around the bush, but Coach Reed, he’ll set you straight and tell you facts about himself and about the players he’s developed.”

In order to get a better feel for Matthews and his game, we asked him to describe himself as a player. He gave an explanation that may just prove why Reed pulled the trigger on a scholarship offer Wednesday.

“I’d say that I check all the boxes,” he said. “I have a high IQ. I’m a long, fast corner that can cover and come up and make tackles. Personally, I think I check all the boxes. I always say that I want to improve every part of my game, though, because I don’t want anything to be weaker than the other.

Matthews (6-2, 175) currently ranks as the No. 14 cornerback and the nation’s No. 130 overall prospect regardless of position in the class of 2023, per the 247Sports Composite rankings.

49ers roster moves: Jordan Matthews returns, 2 RBs released from practice squad

The #49ers made a number of moves on their practice squad, including the release of a pair of veteran RBs.

The 49ers on Tuesday made a series of moves on their practice squad to reflect some of the changing injury statuses on their active roster.

Running back Elijah Mitchell is expected to return for Week 5 and should be a full go at practice, giving the 49ers a healthier running back room than they had when they made a slew of RB additions to their practice squad.

They also added another tight end to the practice squad as George Kittle battles through a calf injury.

Here’s a quick rundown of the moves, which were first sent out by NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco:

Colts worked out trio of players, including Jordan Matthews

Colts worked out 3 player on Monday, including former Eagles WR Jordan Matthews.

The Indianapolis Colts held a workout for three players on Monday, including former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jordan Matthews, per the league’s transaction wire.

Matthews has a history with both head coach Frank Reich and quarterback Carson Wentz from their days with the Eagles. He was the leading receiver for the Eagles during Wentz’s rookie season in 2016.

Since then, Matthews hasn’t done much in the league. He had a short stint with the Buffalo Bills after being traded in 2017 before returning to the Eagles in 2018-2019. Matthews has spent the last two seasons on the practice squad for the San Francisco 49ers.

It isn’t clear what position the Colts worked him out at as Matthews announced he would be switching from wide receiver to tight end moving forward.

Seeing as the other two players that worked out for the Colts were tight ends Daniel Helm and Michael Jacobson, it would be fair to assume Matthews was worked out as a tight end.

Post-Kelvin Benjamin cut, another former Bills WR signed as TE

Can Jordan Matthews do what Kelvin Benjamin could not?

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbw1j59gmjw5gdj player_id=none image=https://billswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The saga that is Kelvin Benjamin came to an end last week.

The former Bills wide receiver tried out with the Giants during minicamp as a tight end. It worked and he was signed but then in a crazy sequence of events, he was then released.

But Benjamin was not the only former wideout with the Bills that wanted to try and make that position change. Jordan Matthews was attempting to do the same.

Matthews previously bulked up and had tried out in front of some teams with other free agents. That did not lead to him immediately finding a job, but eventually he did.

Over the weekend, the 49ers inked Matthews to their training camp roster, according to Niners Wire. He’s listed as a tight end.

Matthews, 29, is getting this opportunity because he correctly handled his body and weight, adding the proper bulk. The Giants asked Benjamin to do the same and he decided not to and made a bit of a stink when he was cut.

While some had been curious to see if Benjamin would pan out, there won’t be many supporters for Matthews in Buffalo. He did rip western New York a bit upon departing the team.

But time will tell if he actually pulls off what Benjamin could not.

Matthews did previously play for the 49ers but as a wide receiver just last year. His lone season with the Bills was in 2017.
