Recruiting roundup: Checking out the 2022 recruiting class and other notes

Where do the Oklahoma Sooners stand with certain players in the 2022 recruiting class?

The Oklahoma Sooners are riding a lot of momentum as the calendar has flipped to November. They are undefeated, ranked in the top eight of every major ranking, and can currently boast a top 10 recruiting class.

While the on-field product has been good and still has the potential to be great this season, great programs don’t just neglect the other part of the team. Recruiting is the lifeblood of college sports. Especially college football despite what Florida head coach Dan Mullen might suggest.

It’s a 365 days a year job and it never stops.

Despite some hiccups, the Sooners are closing in on another top 10 class for the 2022 recruiting cycle. We would seriously be talking about a top 3 class had they not lost a top 10 national recruit in Luther Burden earlier this year. They also lost Jordan Hudson and Talyn Shettron as well.

However, the Sooners picked up the slack in terms of sheer star power and talent by their October run landing two of this senior’s class best talents in Gabriel Brownlow Dindy and Gentry Williams according to the USA Today Sports High School Composite Player Rankings.

With an early signing day of December 15th, the Oklahoma Sooners can put pen to paper and close the deal for good by having many guys sign and send in their National Letters of Intent.

As it currently stands, Oklahoma’s well on its way to locking down their 2022 class as no one currently looks like a surprise flip to somewhere else at the moment with a month to go.

However, there are a few recruits who could still jump on board namely guys like Jovontae Barnes, Hero Kanu, Marvin Jones Jr., Azareyeh Thomas, and Chris McClellan.

Jovontae Barnes, a running back from Las Vegas is set to visit Oklahoma for the Iowa State game. He plans to silently commit and announce his decision at one of the winter All-Star games in January. The Sooners are in an excellent spot here if you’ve followed our coverage over the months.

Hero Kanu, a defensive lineman originally from Germany, but playing football in California, is another huge possibility for the Sooners here. Judging things right now, this seems like it may be down to Oklahoma and Ohio State, which may be a theme for Oklahoma over the next few months on the recruiting trail.

Marvin Jones Jr. plays with 2023 Sooners commit Brandon Inniss. The chance is there for them to play in college as well. Jamar Cain is on the prowl and is positioning Oklahoma to be right in the thick of it over the coming months in a battle with Alabama and Florida State for the highly talented edge rusher.

Azareyeh Thomas popped onto the scene after a visit a few weeks ago and Oklahoma is trending well enough to have garnered multiple crystal ball predictions on 247’s site. Thomas is listed as an athlete but looks to be playing safety if he plays for the Sooners.

Most, if not all of these guys will be names to monitor in the coming months as letters of intent begin to get signed and as players end their high school seasons, allowing them to focus solely on their recruiting journeys as their senior football seasons come to an end.

Five recruits that Texas should fill out their 2022 class with

With the way scholarships work on a yearly basis, Texas has somewhere around five left. Here is who they should fill their 2022 class out with.

Monday was a giant swing in momentum for Texas’ recruiting before the season began. Jaray Bledsoe and J’Mond Tapp, both four-star defensive linemen, announced their commitments on Monday, nearly putting Bo Davis on a heater. “Balls back,” as they say.

With 20 commitments now in the class, Texas is up to No. 6 in the 247Sports composite rankings*. Penn State, Notre Dame, Georgia, Ohio State, and Alabama are the only programs ahead at the moment.

*It’s important to note Texas’ average recruit rank is the second-lowest of any team in the top 10 and fourth lowest of anybody in the top 15.

With the way scholarships work on a yearly basis, the Longhorns have somewhere around five left. Numbers can shift around, especially with two special team products contributing to the count at the moment.

If five is truly the number, Texas must hone in on a few elite prospects to take the class to a different level, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Steve Sarkisian not capitalizing on the great in-state offensive talent would be a disappointment.

Here are five recruits Texas should fill their 2022 class out with.

5-Star, number 1 wide receiver in 2023 commits to the Oklahoma Sooners

The Oklahoma Sooners landed another big-time prospect to the 2023 recruiting class with the commitment from top wide receiver Brandon Inniss.

The Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver group has taken a hit this Summer with Jordan Hudson (SMU) and Talyn Shetron (Oklahoma State) already finding new homes and Luther Burden looking for a new landing spot. While the losses are significant for the 2022 recruiting cycle, the Sooners have had an incredible run with the 2023 class.

They’ve already landed five recruits for 2023 and today got another big-time commitment from 5-star wide receiver Brandon Inniss.

Inniss chose the Oklahoma Sooners over Alabama, Florida, Ohio State, and Miami and adds to a 2023 recruiting class that’s already the number one group with a year and a half until national signing day.

Joining a group that already includes Malachi Nelson, Treyaun Webb, Makai Lemon, Luke Hasz, and Joshua Bates, the offensive side of the ball continues to pick up steam for 2023 with the commitment of Inniss.

With the commitment, the Sooners continue to bolster their class for the 2023 recruiting cycle.

Andrew Ivins, a Southeast Recruiting Analyst for 247Sports, had this to say about Inniss:

Promising build for a young receiver. A two-year contributor at the varsity level that is known for his big-play ability. Understands the importance of setting up and selling routes. Mixes gears well. Attacks the ball in the air and often times becomes a bigger target for quarterbacks than his size would initially suggest. Might lack a true top gear, but plays fast in pads and can get behind a defense. Has run in the 4.6s on the lasers in the 40-yard dash. Fluid when it comes to changing directions. Good in the open field after a catch. Getting better at breaking tackles. Willing blocker, although that’s an area of his game he can also keep improving. The type of prospect that many college coaches have already circled as a priority for them in South Florida. Should develop into a multi-year starter at a Top 25 program level given skillset and athletic profile. Has a chance to eventually play on Sundays. – Ivins

Inniss announced via his Twitter account today that he plans to make his commitment decision known on Aug. 22 on CBS.

Former Oklahoma commit pledges to stay in North Texas

Former Oklahoma Sooners commit Jordan Hudson has chosen to play for Lincoln Riley’s brother, Garrett and SMU.

It appears that former Oklahoma Sooners commit in the 2022 class Jordan Hudson has made his decision on where he will play next season. The talented wide receiver from Garland, Texas, decided to back out of his commitment to the Oklahoma Sooners. Hudson has traded one Riley for another. Lincoln Riley’s brother Garrett is currently the offensive coordinator for the Southern Methodist Mustangs.

The SMU Mustangs have done a good job of plucking talent with Sooner ties this past offseason. Hudson will join Tanner Mordecai and Grant Calcaterra who transferred from OU to SMU. Hudson chose SMU over Oklahoma, Texas, and Alabama. He will now be part of a top-tier offense in Dallas, Texas. Hudson won’t have to venture too far from his hometown of Garland to play his collegiate football.

“I like (assistant) coach (Ra’Shaad) Samples, the whole coaching staff,” Hudson told 247Sports ahead of his decision. “I played with a couple of the guys coming in. My teammates, if I were to go there, the kinship would be there. Coach Samples, the way he has been recruiting me and going through the process, it’s been good, he is just my guy.” – Jordan Hudson

Four-star wide receiver Jordan Hudson commits to SMU over Alabama and Texas

On Sunday, Jordan Hudson shut down his recruitment once again, committing to SMU. The four-star wide receiver decided to stay just 22 minutes away from home.

Jordan Hudson has had quite a couple of weeks. Everything kicked off with a decommitment from Oklahoma. Rarely does one of the top offensive players in the country, especially from the state of Texas, back off from the opportunity to play for Lincoln Riley.

Next, predictions for the hometown SMU Mustangs began to fly in from 247Sports’ connected insiders. Being a Garland, TX native, Hudson would be the highest-rated SMU commit since the composite began at the turn of the century.

Hudson then released a top three school list, including SMU, with Alabama and Texas tagging along. Oklahoma was taken out of consideration despite being committed for nearly a year.

On Sunday, Hudson shut down his recruitment once again, committing to the Ponies. The four-star wide receiver decided to stay just 22 minutes away from home.

Steve Sarkisian had his opportunity to impress Hudson, getting him to Austin for an unofficial visit. He posed in an icy white uniform alongside Director of Recruiting Brandon Harris.

SMU will now have its two highest rated recruits in history on the field at the same time. Four-star quarterback Preston Stone used to hold the title but will now be throwing to an elite wide receiver. Sonny Dykes has recruited the Dallas area phenomenally since taking over.

On the 247Sports composite, Hudson is the No. 14 wide receiver and No. 113 player overall in the country. Within the state of Texas, he skims inside the top 25 at No. 23.

Four-star WR Jordan Hudson announces top three schools, commitment date

Jordan Hudson cleared up who was remaining in his recruitment. As expected, SMU and Texas were included, but the wildcard is Alabama.

Lincoln Riley and Oklahoma recently lost a commitment from one of the top receivers in the country. Jordan Hudson was loyal to the Sooners’ soil for nearly 11 months before reopening his recruitment.

SMU and Texas quickly emerged as leaders for the four-star wide receiver. Both have gotten visits from Hudson, the Mustangs as an official, the Longhorns unofficially. 247Sports crystal ball predictions have flooded in for the hometown Dallas school as well.

On Saturday, Hudson cleared up who was remaining in his recruitment with a top-three school list. As expected, SMU and Texas were included, but the wildcard is Alabama. Yes, you can stop us if you have heard this one before. Nick Saban is going after the top prospects from the state of Texas.

Hudson simultaneously announced July 4 would be his commitment date.

If Texas is able to pull off the recruiting victory, flipping a prospect from across the Red River would be an incredible achievement. Rarely do recruits flip flop between the rivals. Hudson could be the second one within two cycles.

July 4 has the potential to be a massive day for the Longhorns. Four-star safety Bryce Anderson is possibly announcing his commitment as well. Texas A&M is the key opponent there.

Two wins over your main rivals in the recruiting field would be massive for Steve Sarkisian.

On the 247Sports composite, Hudson is the No. 113 player and No. 12 wide receiver in the country. Within the state of Texas, he cracks the top 25 at No. 23.

LOOK: Former Oklahoma commit Jordan Hudson in a Texas uniform

With Jordan Hudson now on a UOV, Steve Sarkisian and Co. has a chance to impress. You can see the four-star WR posed in a UT uniform here:

Oklahoma stole one of Texas’ best commits in four-star ATH Billy Bowman during the 2021 cycle. The Denton Ryan product was sold on the Sooners’ coaching staff and the possibility of playing offense under Lincoln Riley.

Texas is now looking for revenge in the form of Jordan Hudson. A long-time Oklahoma commit, Hudson reopened his recruitment in the middle of June. Steve Sarkisian knew a special product was available and got him to the 40 Acres as soon as possible.

Before getting to Austin, Hudson took an official visit to the hometown school in SMU over the weekend. Similar to Savion Byrd’s recruitment last year, the Mustangs are going for a big named recruit against a college football blue-blood.

With Hudson now on an unofficial visit, Sarkisian and the staff have the chance to impress. The four-star receiver posed with the Director of Recruiting Brandon Harris. You can see the photo below:

Getting Hudson to make a trip to Austin was excellent work by the Texas staff. After his decommitment from Oklahoma, SMU was instantly seen as the favorite to land the Garland native. Crystal ball predictions even began to flood in for the wide receiver in favor of the Mustangs.

After the Jake Smith transfer, Texas is going to have another spot open at wide receiver in the ’22 class. Adding Hudson onto Armani Winfield plus other targets Andre Coleman is pursuing (Evan Stewart, Brenen Thompson), would be a dream haul.

On the 247Sports composite, Hudson is the No. 14 wide receiver and No. 113 player overall in the country. Within the state of Texas, he skims inside the top 25 at No. 23.

Former Oklahoma commit, four-star WR Jordan Hudson expected to visit Texas

After decommitting from OU, Texas and SMU were seen as the favorites to land Jordan Hudson. Reports state the WR is expected to visit both.

Rarely does Lincoln Riley ever lose out on offensive talent. Especially wide receivers from the state of Texas. For once, the Oklahoma head coach seems to have missed on an elite offensive prospect.

Four-star Jordan Hudson had been committed to the Sooners for nearly a whole year. He decided to decommit on Monday afternoon, reopening his recruitment to the rest of the country.

Texas and SMU were immediately seen as the favorites to land Hudson. With visits now allowed, both schools have been pushing to get the wide receiver on campus.

Being from Garland, the Mustangs could have an easier time convincing Hudson to make a short drive to University Park. Steve Sarkisian and Andre Coleman have had to do some convincing.

It seems as if Hudson is listening and will be making his way down to Austin soon. According to multiple reports, the wide receiver will head to the Forty Acres to listen to what the Longhorns have to offer.

Hudson even tweeted out himself the possibility of a visit.

Wide receiver is a major priority for Texas in the 2022 class and Hudson should be near the top of their board. Armani Winfield is already on board, while Evan Stewart and Brenen Thompson’s speed separate them as must-get prospects. But, Hudson has been likened with current Dallas Cowboy CeeDee Lamb.

If you remember anything about the 2019 Red River Shootout, having a CeeDee Lamb type player in a Sarkisian offense would not exactly be the worst thing in the world.

Two crystal balls have already been inserted for the Ponies. When Texas ends up hosting Hudson, they will be playing catch up.

On the 247Sports composite, Hudson is the No. 14 wide receiver and the No. 114 player in the country. Within the state of Texas, he sneaks inside the top 25 at No. 23.

Four-star WR Jordan Hudson decommits from Oklahoma

Oklahoma lost one of the vocal leaders of its 2022 recruiting class on Monday, as wide receiver Jordan Hudson backed off his commitment.

Oklahoma lost one of the vocal leaders of its 2022 recruiting class on Monday, as four-star Garland (Texas) High School wide receiver Jordan Hudson backed off his commitment to the Sooners.

Hudson took to Twitter to announce his decision.

“First off, I would like to thank coach Riley and the entire OU coaching staff for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to play the sport I love at the next level,” Hudson wrote. “I also want to thank the Sooner nation for the continuous support.

It’s been a long process but after speaking with family and friends, I have decided to decommit from the University of Oklahoma and re-open my recruitment.”

Hudson will have no shortage of suitors now that he is back on the open market. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound wideout boasts Power 5 offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Kansas, LSU, Miami, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Oklahoma State and Oregon.

“Lean, athletic build with space for more mass,” 247Sports’ Gabe Brooks wrote in his scouting report of Hudson. “Looks to have above-average height and length, though size has not been verified. Gets good extension to maximize catch radius. Monster production as a sophomore against Texas 6A competition in DFW Metroplex.

“Shows spatial awareness and is cognizant of where he relates to defenders and the sideline. Good run-after-catch player with impressive short-area suddenness. Strings together moves in the open field. Effective chain-mover in the short-to-intermediate passing game.”

According to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Rankings, Hudson is the No. 114 recruit in the class of 2022 and No. 14 wide receiver. 247Sports ranks him as the No. 185 recruit in the class of 2022 and No. 28 wide receiver.
