Five hypothetical SEC trades that would make sense for LSU

In an imaginary world where college football had trades, here are five moves that LSU could make.

Very few discussions can eat up space like a good old trade debate.

Anytime the trade deadline rolls around in professional sports, fans wait on the edge of their seats eager to see what their team might do. College football has the transfer portal, but it’s just not as much fun as a trade. With it being the off-season, it’s time to look at what could happen if trades were allowed.

I’m not advocating for trades to be a thing in college sports. Since players are also getting an education, they should be able to choose which school they attend and not be at the whim of a general manager like many professional athletes are. This is just a fun way to look at rosters for the upcoming year.

LSU patched up a few holes in the transfer portal this year, but there are still some glaring needs. It could use a tight end, and there are some SEC teams that have a tight end to give away. The Tigers are also well positioned at other places, such as running back, where they have some room to trade a player away.

In the imaginary world of college football trades, here’s what would make the most sense for LSU.

2024 ATH Preston Ries earns second offer from the Iowa Hawkeyes

Class of 2024 in-state athlete Preston Ries out of Monticello High School picked up his second college offer from the Iowa Hawkeyes.

In-state class of 2024 product [autotag]Preston Ries[/autotag] picked up his second college offer from the Iowa Hawkeyes. The 6-foot-2, 205 pound athlete is from Monticello High School in Iowa.

After the offer from Iowa, Ries now holds offers from both Iowa and Iowa State. Nebraska and Wisconsin have shown interest as well but are yet to offer Ries.

Ries has played all over the gridiron for Monticello, including quarterback, running back and outside linebacker. According to 247Sports, Ries is a three-star recruit, the No. 74 athlete nationally and the fifth-best player from Iowa in the 2024 class. Rivals also ranks Ries as a three-star prospect.

The offer to Ries continues a recent flurry of offers in the 2024 class from the Hawkeye coaching staff. In addition to Ries, Iowa has offered athlete [autotag]Caleb Benning[/autotag] out of Westside High School in Omaha, Neb., athlete [autotag]Derek Weisskopf[/autotag] from Williamsburg High School in Iowa, tight end [autotag]Christian Bentancur[/autotag] out of Marian Central Catholic High School in Woodstock, Ill., running back [autotag]Jordan Marshall[/autotag] of Archbishop Moeller High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, and offensive lineman [autotag]Ian Moore[/autotag] from New Palestine High School in Indiana.

Iowa has commitments in the 2024 class from East Buchanan High School offensive lineman Cody Fox in Winthrop, Iowa, and Winfield-Mt. Union High School linebacker Cam Buffington in Winfield, Iowa.

Now that both Iowa and Iowa State have offered Ries, it’s likely his recruitment will pick up in earnest from other power-five programs. Ries reported that his offer came after a conversation with Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz and assistant defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Seth Wallace. It indicates that Iowa views Ries’ future as a linebacker at the next level.

Here’s a look at Ries’ sophomore Hudl highlights at Monticello High School.

2023 DE/EDGE Jordan Allen grabs Iowa Hawkeyes offer

Iowa offered class of 2023 defensive end and EDGE Jordan Allen from Olathe, Kan.

Iowa identified another defensive player it would like to join its 2023 recruiting class. The Hawkeye coaching staff extended an offer to Olathe, Kan., defensive end and EDGE Jordan Allen out of Olathe South.

The 6-foot-4, 240 pound Sunflower State product is ranked as a three-star recruit by 247Sports, the nation’s No. 60 EDGE and the 11th-best player from Kansas. Rivals regards Allen as a three-star weak side defensive end and the No. 11 player from Kansas. Lastly, according to On3, Allen is a three-star EDGE, the No. 780 player overall in the On3 consensus, the No. 51 EDGE and the No. 7 player from Kansas.

Iowa State was the first school to offer Allen back on Feb. 9. South Dakota, New Mexico State, Kansas, Kansas State and Vanderbilt also offered Allen in the month of February. Then, Washington offered Allen last month before Iowa offered Allen this weekend.

Allen would be another nice defensive piece to add to the Hawkeyes’ early defensive commits. If Allen picked Iowa, he would join a list of commits that includes defensive end and EDGE Chase Brackney out of Cherry Creek High School in Colorado, linebacker Ben Kueter from Iowa City High School, defensive back John Nestor from Marist High School in Chicago and defensive lineman Maddux Borcherding-Johnson from Norwalk High School.

According to MaxPreps, Allen finished last season at Olathe South with 56 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, four sacks and one fumble recovery for the Falcons. Here’s a look at his junior season Hudl highlights at Olathe South.

Penn State pulls three-star DB out of Louisiana without an official visit

Penn State added 3-star CB Jordan Allen to its No. 2 recruiting class in 2022

Penn State’s Class of 2022 continues to fill up months away from signing day. On Saturday afternoon, the Nittany Lions added a cornerback out of Louisiana to the recruiting haul.

Jordan Allen, a three-star cornerback from Lafayette, Louisiana, made his commitment to Penn State official on Saturday afternoon with the release of a short announcement video. Allen chose Penn State over offers from Louisville, Miami, Ole Miss, and Georgia.

Allen is a top 25 player in the state of Louisiana, a state always ripe with football talent. It is also a state typically dominated by LSU in keeping in-state talent close to home, with heavy competition from Alabama. Of the top 25 players from Louisiana currently committed to a school, Allen is the only player not heading to an SEC program (LSU, Alabama, and Mississippi State all with current commitments in addition to Penn State with Allen).

Making this recruiting effort even better for Penn State is Allen never made an official visit to Happy Valley. Allen had to cancel a previously scheduled trip in June. He did do a virtual tour of the campus, but to secure a commitment without hosting a prospect from the south for an official visit speaks volumes about the work done by the staff, led by cornerbacks coach Terry Smith.

Penn State’s depth at the cornerback position is pretty solid already, and it should once again be in a good position in 2022 following some notable departures and key additions. Allen can play safety as well, which may come in handy as Penn State will appear to have a good amount of talent to spread around.

Penn State also has JUCO transfer Tyrece Mills, a safety, onboard for the Class of 2022 as well. Penn State made a big push in acquiring more bodies for the secondary with a ton of offers out for cornerbacks. Four-star cornerback Cam Miller, from Florida, is said to be down to Penn State and Virginia Tech as his decision looms (it is reported he will announce before the start of the season). Penn State is also in the mix for Philadelphia recruit Keenan Nelson Jr., a four-star recruit from St. Joseph’s Prep. South Carolina appears to be a top candidate for his commitment, however. Pitt and Virginia Tech are also believed to be in the running along with the Nittany Lions.

Penn State currently owns the nation’s No. 2 recruiting class in the 247 Sports composite rankings.

Jeremy Pruitt addresses Vols’ tight end unit

Jeremy Pruitt addresses Vols’ tight end unit.

KNOXVILLE — Game week ahead of the Sept. 26 season opener is approaching for Tennessee.

Tennessee practiced for the 16th time Thursday during fall training camp. Following practice, Jeremy Pruitt addressed the Vols’ tight end unit. It is a unit that saw redshirt freshman Jackson Lowe enter the transfer portal this week.

“The tight end position we are working several guys there,” Pruitt said on a Zoom call with reporters. “It is a competitive spot. There’s not much difference in the guys. How they go about their business every day, how they practice, how they compete, what kind of habits they’ve created. They control it. We want to play the best players, and we’ve got some guys who are competing hard there to do that.”

The tight end group is coached by Joe Osovet this season. The unit consists of Austin Pope, Princeton Fant, Sean Brown, Jordan Allen and Jacob Warren.

Pope underwent back surgery in July. Pruitt mentioned that Pope “is not going to play right now.”

“We’re working Princeton Fant, Sean Brown, Jordan Allen, Jacob Warren, so we’ve got a lot of guys that are getting reps in there,” Pruitt said. “Most of those guys have played very little football for us, so they’ve got to work on their consistency, they’ve got to be able to block the C-area, they’ve got to play fast, they’ve got to be good communicators.

“That’s one position that you really need to be instinctive to have a feel because we ask the tight ends to do a lot. It’s a position where there’s lots of competition. I have confidence in all of those guys, but somebody’s got to separate themselves.”

Jim Chaney discusses Vols’ tight ends unit having ‘a lot of competition’

KNOXVILLE — Tennessee’s tight ends unit is headlined by senior Austin Pope in 2020.

Pope announced he underwent back surgery on July 16. Following Tennessee’s third practice of fall training camp, third-year UT head coach Jeremy Pruitt mentioned that Pope has been practicing and “should be ready to play for the opener” at South Carolina on Sept. 26.

Offensive coordinator Jim Chaney discussed the Vols’ tight ends unit on a Zoom call with reporters during there second week of fall training camp.

“Austin is that, he’s a stabilizing force,” Chaney said. “He’s a good kid, been around football a long time. We like what he brings to the table. He will always be that consistent kid that we like.

“Behind him, we have Princeton Fant, who is a young man who bounced around a lot early in his career. We feel real comfortable where we have him right now doing what he needs to be doing. Jacob Warren is doing a fine job. There is a lot of competition in the room. They all have a little different skill set it seems like, it’s interesting to me. Behind him you have Jordan Allen and you got Sean Brown. You got some other guys that are just mixing around. There’s a lot of competition there, waiting on someone to jump above the other ones and emerge as a solid football player. They’re just continually learning. You’re talking about guys that haven’t played a lot of football for us in those five. That is a position that we are trying to force feed real fast on development and we are doing it, hopefully, through competition.”
