Pep Hamilton explains his usage of tight ends in Texans offense

Hamilton said that the flexibility tight ends give his offense can be a major edge for the #Texans against opposing defenses

Tight end Jordan Akins had a strong showing for the Houston Texans last week against the Las Vegas Raiders, and offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton is looking to get him involved early and often against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. In his comments to the media on Thursday, Hamilton pointed out a few different ways that he likes to use players at the position and said that the flexibility to run or pass in sets that feature tight ends gives the offense more options on any given down.

“Ultimately, we like giving the presentation to the defense that we can run and or pass the ball.  The biggest challenge for any offense and for the quarterback specifically is for the defense to really hunker down and defend one thing. When they put extra hats in the box to defend the run, we want to have the ability to attack them with the passing game. Be it the play action passing game, quarterback movements, whatever it is.

“It’s also the same concept when you talk about two safety coverages, middle open coverages as we call it, just having the ability in that situation to feel good about those guys who are pass receivers being able to play without the ball and win their matchup. Blocking really good defense ends that we face in this league play after play.”

It will take some nifty schemes to get Houston back above .500 before the season ends, and as the weeks pass by, it seems unlikely that the team is playing for anything except their pride. Still, in the early stages of a rebuild, the Texans can look to formulate different aspects of their game plan that might serve to help them in the coming seasons.

If they can start with some crafty usage of their tight ends, the reps they get in through the rest of their schedule may be the key to finding winning strategies next season after they’ve reloaded with more offensive talent.

Tight end Jordan Akins says bye week preparation gave Texans offense a spark against Las Vegas

Akins told reporters that extra preparation before their game against the Raiders helped the offense find its groove

The Houston Texans might have lost against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 7, but they made a point to take note of every part of their game plan that gave them an edge. New contributors made a considerable impact on the team on Sunday, and they managed to deploy their available talent in new ways that they hoped would gain them an edge.

Tight end Jordan Akins was a crucial part of the success they found before things took a turn for the worse in the second half, and scored a touchdown in what proved to be one of the more defining efforts of his career. In comments to the media on Tuesday, he told reporters that the fresh start that the Texans got off the bye week played a major role in their offensive success.

“I’d say tempo and timing, physicality,” Akins explained of what the team might bring from Week 7 into their coming matchups. “The offensive line moving the defensive line. The run game seems to be our identity, and it’s opened up the passing game as well. (Davis) Mills is getting comfortable. We’re getting comfortable and the more repetitions we get, the stronger the offense will be.”

With a very challenging tilt against the Tennessee Titans on the horizon for Week 8’s Sunday’s schedule, Houston will need to give themself every edge possible to secure their second victory of the season. For fans, a win over a team like the Titans could provide a glimpse of excellence to come from the up-and-coming squad, and impressive performances by the team’s rookies would be a well-deserved cherry on top for the Texans faithful.

Veterans like Akins will have a huge opportunity to become integral pieces of Houston’s looming rebuild, and with a similar strategy to that which they showed against the Raiders, the tight end might come into his own on his unit of undisputed underdogs.

TE Jordan Akins considers return to the Texans an ‘honor’

#Texans TE Jordan Akins says it is an “honor” to return to the team, and his chemistry with QB Davis Mills never tapered.

The Houston Texans let Jordan Akins go.

The Texans drafted the third-round tight end from Central Florida in 2018, but allowed the 6-4, 243-pounder to walk in 2022 free agency. The New York Giants were the suitor that took Akins, but dropped him while making final roster cuts at the end of preseason.

Houston had no problem bringing Akins back on Aug. 31 as a practice squad signee, and the 30-year-old has had a good attitude about starting off from the bottom.

“Coming back is an honor,” Akins told reporters Oct. 25. “To be back with my brothers and compete and go to work with my soldiers. Any time my jersey is called to make a play, I try to do the best I can whether it’s special teams or offense. Any way I can contribute.”

Akins was inactive for the first two games of the season, but was active for the Texans’ Week 3 tilt at the Chicago Bears. Akins caught three passes for 31 yards and a touchdown in the 23-20 letdown.

In the last four games, Akins has found his way on the game day roster and has been productive. Akins provided Houston with 10 catches for 154 yards and a score.

The way Akins sees it, the chemistry that he established with quarterback Davis Mills never subsided, even though he spent the entire 2022 offseason, training camp, and preseason trying to forge a connection with Daniel Jones in New York.

Said Akins: “We’re just picking up where we left off at. More repetitions for the tight ends to run down the seams, in the flats, as well as inside the hashes. I think we’re connecting pretty well.”

Akins was one of Mills’ big targets in the 38-20 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 7 as he hauled in three catches for a season-high 68 yards.

As the Texans continue to figure out what works in the passing game, Akins appears to be an element that Mills can count on.

WATCH: Davis Mills finds Jordan Akins for big gain

Mills connected with tight end Jordan Akins for this huge play to get the third quarter underway in Week 7

On the Houston Texans’ opening drive of the second half, Davis Mills found tight end Jordan Akins for a 39-yard gain to get the offense’s gears turning against the Las Vegas Raiders. The play set Houston up for a field goal that accounted for the first score of the third quarter.

Check out this highlight reel play below, and notice Akins’ speed once he had the ball in his hands:

As pointed out by the team in their Tweet that showcased the play, this effort came on what has been deemed “National Tight End Day” around the NFL. Akins is now the team’s leading receiver by a relatively wide margin and is set up to be one of Houston’s brightest stars of the game if he can make a few more impactful plays.

After the ensuing field goal, the Texans would take a narrow three-point lead that they hope will hold for long enough to close out the Raiders to advance their 2022 record to 2-3-1.

Texans TE Jordan Akins’ ‘good attitude’ led to being signed to active roster

The Houston Texans signed TE Jordan Akins from the practice squad to the active roster due to his “good attitude,” according to GM Nick Caserio.

Even though the Houston Texans are on a bye week, fresh off of their first victory of the season over divisional rival Jacksonville, general manager Nick Caserio is still making moves to help the team get better.

On Wednesday, the team signed tight end Jordan Akins from the practice squad to the active roster.

Akins, 30, was selected by the Houston Texans in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft. After four seasons with the team, the former University of Central Florida tight end was released.

He was signed by the New York Giants in April 2022 but was cut in August after training camp.

The Texans brought him back to the team by signing him to their practice squad, and he has made the best of his opportunity by catching seven passes for 86 yards and a touchdown.

Houston had a decision to make with Akins after elevating him to the gameday roster for three games, which is the maximum amount of time a practice squad player can use.

Caserio decided after watching his performance on game days how professional he was during his short stint back with the Texans.

“Jordan has returned, and had a good attitude,” said Caserio when asked about the roster move during his press conference on Tuesday. “When a player leaves and comes back, you’re not really sure how that’s going to go, but Jordan has done a good job, had a good attitude. He’s taken advantage of his opportunities when he’s played. [Tight ends coach] Berb (Tim Berbenich) has done a good job with him. It’s been good to have Akins back in the building. Jordan has done a good job with his opportunities.”

The Texans will resume practice on Monday as they prepare to travel and take on the Las Vegas Raiders.

Texans sign S Grayland Arnold to active roster ahead of Chargers game

The Houston Texans have signed S Grayland Arnold to the active roster as part of their roster moves for Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Houston Texans have made three roster moves ahead of their Week 4 tilt with the Los Angeles Chargers Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at NRG Stadium.

Houston signed safety Grayland Arnold from the practice squad to the active roster. Arnold had a key special teams tackle in the fourth quarter of the 23-20 loss to the Chicago Bears.

The Texans also elevated tight end Jordan Akins and tight end Mason Schreck as part of their two standard elevations for the game. Houston has injuries at tight end with Pharaoh Brown (shoulder/hip), who is limited, and Brevin Jordan (ankle).

Akins caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Davis Mills in Week 3.

Texans’ passing game remains enigmatic after first three weeks

The Houston Texans’ passing offense is quite puzzling after three weeks into the 2022 season.

For a brief moment in Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears, Houston Texans quarterback Davis Mills and offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton looked like they had found a hole in the Bears’ defense that they could exploit.

In the 23-20 loss, Mills got the ball to tight ends Jordan Akins and Pharaoh Brown as he completed six passes for 62 yards and one touchdown to the combination. Both players accounted for two of the four passes from Mills that went longer than 20-plus yards.

On the second play from scrimmage in the third quarter, Mills connected on a 25-yard pass to Akins to move the chains. Akins was able to get separation from Bears’ defensive back Kyler Gordon at the snap of the ball as Mills found him running in stride for a significant gain.

In the fourth quarter, Mills made a connection with Brown on third and ten from the Houston nine-yard line for 30-yards to keep the drive alive.

Some people are perplexed on why the Texans are not doing enough to get the tight ends involved in the offense, mainly when the production from the wide receiver position is not producing.

In the first three games, all touchdown receptions (3) have gone to tight ends (Howard 2, Akins 1), while the receivers and backs have yet to reach the end zone on any catches. Brown also leads the NFL in average separation yards at 4.8.

“We respect the heck out of our tight end group,” said offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton. “We know that we have a talented group. Moving forward, just like we’ve done in previous weeks, we’re going to find ways to put the best personnel groupings on the field to attack the opponent that we’re facing.”

The passing offense is even more confusing because running back Rex Burkhead (11) trails only Brandin Cooks (13) in receptions on the season.

Houston has to find some way to get everyone involved during their upcoming game against the Los Angeles Chargers, or they will find themselves winless after Week 4.

WATCH: QB Davis Mills hits TE Jordan Akins for a touchdown against the Bears

Houston Texans quarterback Davis Mills connected with tight end Jordan Akins for a 4-yard touchdown against the Chicago Bears in Week 3.

The Houston Texans had trouble at tight end heading into Week 3, which necessitated the re-signing of former 2018 third-rounder Jordan Akins to the practice squad.

Akins was called up ahead of the Week 3 tilt with the Chicago Bears, and he made good on his activation as he hauled in a 4-yard touchdown from quarterback Davis Mills late in the first quarter at Soldier Field.

The improvement in the passing game and connection with the receiving options is what offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton wanted to see.

“That’s the job of the quarterback, to make the appropriate throw in all situations,” said Hamilton. “We’ll do that. We’ll help our receivers and put them in the positions to make plays. When the layups present themselves, we’re going to make the layups, and we have to do a better job at that.”

Report: Texans to elevate TE Jordan Akins to active roster against the Bears

The Houston Texans are elevating tight end Jordan Akins from the practice squad to the active roster.

Welcome back, Jordan Akins.

According to Aaron Wilson from the Pro Football Network, the Houston Texans are elevating their former 2018 third-round tight end from the practice squad to the active roster ahead of their Week 3 tilt with the Chicago Bears.

The Texans are experiencing availability issues at tight end given second-year Brevin Jordan is out with an ankle injury. Pharaoh Brown is questionable with a shoulder injury, although he was a full participant in Friday’s practice.

Akins caught 24 passes for 214 yards through 13 games for Houston last season, three games of which he started. Akins was not re-signed by Houston in the 2022 offseason and spent the offseason and training camp with the New York Giants.
