Is Jonathon Brooks playing today? Injury updates for the Panthers RB in Week 8

We’re still waiting on the NFL debut of Panthers rookie RB Jonathon Brooks.

The NFL debut of Carolina Panthers running back Jonathon Brooks will not go down this afternoon.

Brooks was officially ruled out of the team’s Week 8 matchup against Denver Broncos on Saturday afternoon. The rookie rusher, who is continuing his comeback from an ACL tear, was previously listed as questionable for the contest on Friday’s injury report.

Carolina selected University of Texas standout with the 46th overall pick of the 2024 draft. Despite the expectation that he would’ve been ready by training camp, Brooks remained sidelined throughout the summer and began the regular season on the physically unable to perform/non-football injury list.

The Panthers designated the 21-year-old to return to practice back on Oct. 16.

Head coach Dave Canales said the following of Brooks after Friday’s session:

As of this writing, the Panthers have 10 days to activate Brooks to the 53-man roster. If they do not, Brooks will not be permitted to play for the rest of the season.

Panthers QB Bryce Young named starter for Week 8 matchup vs. Broncos

With Andy Dalton dealing with a right thumb injury, the Panthers will hand the reins back over to Bryce Young in Week 8.

The Carolina Panthers will, once again, look a little different under center.

On Wednesday, head coach Dave Canales announced that second-year quarterback Bryce Young is set to start in the team’s Week 8 matchup against the Denver Broncos. The second shot for the 2023 No. 1 overall pick comes as a result of a right thumb injury to veteran Andy Dalton, who was involved in a minor car accident on Tuesday.

Young was benched following a disappointing start to his sophomore campaign. He passed for just 250 yards and three interceptions over a pair of losses.

Here, headlined by Dalton, is Wednesday’s full injury report:

Panthers Week 7 injury report: 6 players ruled out vs. Commanders

The Panthers will be without a handful of starters in Week 7.

The Carolina Panthers defense will be without even more of their starters in Week 7.

Six players have been ruled out ahead of Sunday’s matchup against the Washington Commanders—including defensive lineman A’Shawn Robinson (ankle) as well as inside linebackers Josey Jewell (hamstring/groin) and Claudin Cherelus (hamstring). Cherelus got the starting nod in place of Jewell in last week’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

On offense, the team will be without starting right tackle Taylor Moton (elbow) for the second straight outing and rookie running back Jonathon Brooks (knee). After being sidelined for the offseason and the first six weeks of the regular season, Brooks was officially designated to return to practice on Wednesday.

In addition, wide receiver Diontae Johnson (ankle)—who returned to the field on Friday after missing the two previous practices—has been listed as questionable.

Panthers RB Jonathon Brooks explains why he did not participate in Thursday’s practice

After returning to the practice field on Wednesday, Panthers rookie RB Jonathon Brooks was a DNP this afternoon. Here’s why:

One day after making his long-awaited and much-anticipated return to the practice field, Carolina Panthers running back Jonathon Brooks was listed as a non-participant for this afternoon’s outing. So, what gives?

Well, the rookie explained his “absence” after Thursday’s session. Here’s what he said, per Joe Person of The Athletic:

Brooks, instead, was seen taking it lightly for his second day back . . .

The Panthers, back in April, traded up to select the University of Texas standout with the 46th overall pick of the 2024 draft. Carolina pounced on Brooks even despite the ACL tear he sustained last November, and expected him to be ready by training camp.

Unfortunately, that would not be the case—as Brooks remained sidelined throughout the summer. He then began the regular season on the reserve/non-football injury list.

Brooks, who was officially designated to return to practice on Wednesday, now has 20 days to be moved to the active roster.

Panthers WR Diontae Johnson misses 2nd straight practice on Thursday

Panthers WR Diontae Johnson was held out of practice once again on Thursday.

The Carolina Panthers were without their No. 1 receiver for the second straight day this week.

After being held out of Wednesday’s practice, wideout Diontae Johnson did not participate in Thursday’s session. Johnson—who leads the team in receptions (29), receiving yards (340) and receiving touchdowns (three)—has been dealing with an ankle injury.

Fellow starter and outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney also remained sidelined. The three-time Pro Bowler injured his shoulder during the Week 5 loss to the Chicago Bears.

Joining them was right tackle Taylor Moton, who missed the very first game of his NFL career this past Sunday due to an elbow issue.

Panthers HC Dave Canales: Jonathon Brooks ‘looked great’ in 1st practice

Panthers HC Dave Canales on rookie RB Jonathon Brooks’ first practice: “He looked great.”

The first official NFL practice for Carolina Panthers running back Jonathon Brooks finally came on Wednesday. And according to head coach Dave Canales, it was a great start for the rookie.

Canales spoke with reporters following the session this afternoon. He was asked how Brooks, who was officially designated to return earlier in the morning, looked.

“He looked great,” Canales replied. “He took a couple of snaps, went through the individual period. So, it was good to have him out there, see him running around.

“Something that we’ve certainly been excited about. Just get him out there and make sure we do the right thing for Jonathon, first and foremost. And then from there, we’ll just kinda take it a week at a time and see where he’s able to help us.”

Brooks, the team’s second-round pick from this year’s draft, had remained sidelined since last November due to an ACL tear. He did not participate in offseason workouts and sat on the reserve/non-football injury list for the first six weeks of the regular season.

Now that he’s back at practice, Brooks will have 21 days to be moved to the active roster. But when will that day come?

“Just looking for the confidence, looking for him to just play normal football,” Canales said when asked how the team will be monitoring Brooks’ progress. “And when we can see that happen, and we see the comfortability and confidence to play fast, then we know he’s ready to go.”

Along with Brooks, the Panthers also got rookie defensive lineman Jaden Crumedy and safety Sam Franklin Jr. back on the practice field today.

Panthers WR Diontae Johnson, 8 others held out from Wednesday’s practice

WR Diontae Johnson and OT Taylor Moton were among the 9 Panthers who did not participate in today’s practice.

(This story was updated to add new information.)

The Carolina Panthers are beginning Week 7 with one heck of an injury report.

Eight players, including wideout Diontae Johnson and right tackle Taylor Moton, were held out of this afternoon’s practice.

Johnson, per head coach Dave Canales, is expected to be back for Thursday’s session. The team’s leading receiver has been nursing ankle and groin injuries throughout the season.

Moton, meanwhile, remains “day-to-day.” The eighth-year hog molly missed the very first game of his NFL career this past Sunday due to a triceps injury.

Outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney, who missed Week 6’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons, also did not participate. (Clowney’s initial listing as a “limited’ participant was officially changed by the team following the release of today’s injury report.)
