Jonathan Stewart disappointed by Brian Urlacher’s comments

As for those teammates Stewart mentioned, one came through with an exceptional response.

Crisis reveals character. Sadly, the recent events in Wisconsin have brought out a lot of ugliness in some people. One example is former Chicago Bears linebacker and Hall of Famer Brian Urlacher, who shared some incredibly insensitive thoughts on Instagram regarding the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha and NBA players going on strike after.

When former Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart saw those words, he expressed surprise on Twitter.

Later, Stewart shared another tweet, calling Urlacher’s comments sad and wondering what his former teammates have to say about them.

Urlacher was one of the greatest linebackers to ever play this game. Unfortunately, that doesn’t necessarily make you a great human being. Stewart is right to call him out.

As for those teammates Stewart mentioned, one came through with an exceptional response.

Former Chicago Pro-Bowl running back Matt Forte called Urlacher’s comments void of empathy, compassion and wisdom.

Amen.

Panthers players share tweets about Charlotte-area earthquake

Here’s what they’re saying about the quake.

2020 is biblical. As if a deadly global pandemic and a 100-year economic crisis weren’t enough, this morning the Charlotte area was hit with a 5.1 magnitude earthquake, the strongest in the area since 1916.

Several current and former Panthers players took notice and tweeted about it. Here’s what they’re saying about the quake.

QB Teddy Bridgewater

LB Andre Smith

Former DE Charles Johnson

Former RB Jonathan Stewart

Stewart is half-right here. Remember the first rule of 2020: things can (and probably will) always get worse.

Former Panthers teammates react to Cam Newton signing with Patriots

Cam Newton: Former Panthers teammates react to signing with Patriots.

It always feels good to be wanted, even if you’re a millionaire professional athlete. Cam Newton has to be feeling a bit vindicated right now. After the Panthers released him in March, there were reports that Cam was “blindsided” by the move. In his Instagram posts, Newton seemed legitimately hurt by the decision, saying that the organization “gave up” on him.

Ever since, some analysts have been suggesting Newton is washed up – that his throwing shoulder is done – that he’ll never start for another team again. Well, the greatest coach in the history of the sport just proved them wrong. At the very least, Bill Belichick decided he’s willing to gamble on a potential come-back for Newton, who has reportedly agreed to the definition of a prove-it, one-year deal with the Patriots.

Some Carolina fans wrote Newton off a long time ago. Many more are happy for Newton, though and are wishing him well in New England. So are some of his former teammates. Here’s what they’re saying on Twitter.

RB Christian McCaffrey

TE Greg Olsen

RB Jonathan Stewart

LB Jermaine Carter Jr.

Indeed.

Jonathan Stewart shares thoughts on racism, supporting Bubba Wallace

Here’s what former Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart shared on Twitter regarding this despicable incident and racism in general.

George Floyd’s death one month ago has spurred antiracist protests across the United States into a worldwide movement. While some progress has been made to address the issues raised by his murder, it’s obvious there is still a great deal of work to be done to erase the injustices in our society.

On Sunday, the sports world got a stark reminder of that when a noose was found hanging in the garage of black NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace at Talladega.

Here’s what former Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart shared on Twitter regarding this despicable incident and racism in general.

To their credit, NASCAR recently banned the flying of Confederate flags outside of their events. That spurred several NFL players to share a renewed interest in the sport, including Panthers safety Tre Boston.

Rejecting acts of hate like this one should not be considered a politcal act. We here at Panthers Wire believe in being on the right side of history and support Stewart, Wallace and anyone else who has suffered the effects of systemic racism.

Teammates and division rivals congratulate Christian McCaffrey on his new contract

Current and former Carolina players aren’t the only ones congratulating McCaffrey, either.

If you’re not sure how to feel about Christian McCaffrey’s four-year, $64 million contract extension, this idea should help. There’s no reason why you can’t feel both happy for McCaffrey getting a well-deserved pay-day and concerned that the Carolina Panthers front office might have absolutely no idea what they’re doing.

While it’s true that McCaffrey is by far the best pass-catching running back in the league, he’s still not as efficient as even an average wide receiver. Also, paying big money for running backs on second contracts has historically tended not worked out well in the NFL. Then again, McCaffrey is a special kind of athlete and might be the exception to the rule.

In any case, McCaffrey’s teammates – both current and former – think he’s worth it and are happy for him. Here’s what they’re saying on Twitter.

Former TE Greg Olsen

Former RB Jonathan Stewart

RB Reggie Bonnafon

OL Tyler Larsen

Current and former Carolina players aren’t the only ones congratulating McCaffrey, either. Some of the other top running backs in the NFL have also chimed in, even those playing for division rivals.

Falcons RB Todd Gurley

Saints RB Alvin Kamara

Respect.

Panthers players share thoughts on coronavirus: ‘This is getting crazy fast!’

Panthers players tweet about coronavirus: ‘This is getting crazy fast’

We try to keep it as light as we can here at Panthers Wire. Football is the top priority and everything comes in a distant second. Sometimes, real life intervenes and we have no choice but to sit up and take notice, though. Following yesterday’s series of developments about coronavirus (COVID-19), this is one of those times.

If it wasn’t already on your radar, the stituation became real for many Americans yesterday when the WHO officially declared it a global pandemic and the NBA suspended their season, even as live games were still going on. That prompted Panthers safety (for at least six more days) Tre Boston to share his thoughts on what’s been going on. Here’s how Boston and a few other Carolina players are reacting to the news.

FS Tre Boston

LB Jermaine Carter Jr.

RB Mike Davis

Former RB Jonathan Stewart

Former WR Torrey Smith

That’s a good usage of GIFs by Smith, but there’s no need to panic just yet.

Experts at the CDC are recommending to wash your hands often, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth and avoid contact with people who are sick. You can learn more here.

6 running backs the Seattle Seahawks could sign for Week 17

The Seattle Seahawks are already flying Marshawn Lynch in for a visit. Here are six other options they could look to sign as replacements.

Things went from bad to worse for the Seattle Seahawks after Sunday’s backbreaking 27-13 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, when it was announced postgame that both Chris Carson (hip) and C.J. Prosise (broken arm) are expected to miss the rest of the season.

With Rashaad Penny (ACL) already on the shelf, the Seahawks are down to just one healthy running back, rookie Travis Homer, on the active roster.

The team does have Xavier Turner, who played quite a bit with Seattle during the preseason, on the practice squad, but it’s pretty clear this team will need to find some veteran help on the free-agent market to help get them through their crucial Week 17 matchup with the 49ers, as well as their playoff games.

“We have to get to scrambling, Johnny’s [Schneider] got to get to work and figure out what we’re doing next,” coach Pete Carroll said immediately after the game. “That’s a lot of game for Homer to have to play by himself. So, obviously, we will make some moves here, and figure some stuff out.”

The Seahawks are flying former Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch into town on Monday to visit. If he is healthy, both sides are interested in a reunion and an agreement could come together in short order.

However, Lynch may not be the only signing the team makes (if they sign him at all) and there are still plenty of other options the team could bring in alongside, or instead of, Beast Mode.

Here are six veteran free agent running backs, not including Lynch, who I believe will hear from Pete Carroll and/or John Schneider this week – and my opinion on why they would or wouldn’t be a good fit to sign with the team.

Mark Ingram goes over 1,000 rushing yards, sets Ravens record with Lamar Jackson

Ravens running back Mark Ingram has rushed for 1,000 yards for the third time in his NFL career.

Some people may have questioned just how much running back Mark Ingram had left in the tank after he signed with the Baltimore Ravens prior to the 2019 season. He was coming off a down year in New Orleans in which he rushed for just 645 yards — his lowest total since 2013. But it is safe to say that Ingram has justified the faith Baltimore showed in signing him.

With a six-yard scamper in the second quarter against the Cleveland Browns, Ingram went past the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the season. This is his third season with 1,000 yards on the ground after getting there with the Saints in 2016 and 2017.

Ingram is the second Ravens player to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark this season after his teammate Lamar Jackson did so back in Week 14. Jackson and Ingram are the first pair of teammates to have 1,000 yards in the same season since Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams for the Carolina Panthers back in 2009. They’re also the first pair of Ravens to reach the mark together in a single season.

The Ravens will be looking for more from Ingram and the rest of the offense, as they currently trail the Browns 6-0.

Jonathan Stewart says Lamar Jackson has ‘MVP on lock’

This year, second-year Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is the biggest surprise in the league, hands down.

Like any great show, each NFL season has unexpected twists that usually very few people see coming.

This year, second-year Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is the biggest surprise in the league, hands down. With only a couple weeks left to go in the season, Jackson is virtually guaranteed to win the MVP award. Former Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart says he has it on lock.

One could make a case that Russell Wilson deserves at least a few votes. Anyone but Jackson winning the award would be a farce, though.

Last night, Jackson broke Michael Vick’s record for the most rushing yards in a single season by a quarterback and it wasn’t even close to the most impressive thing he did.

This seemingly effortless 33-yard dime to Seth Roberts is a fine example of a play that Jackson has somehow made look routine this season.

In the end, Jackson threw five touchdown passes on just 23 attempts. It’s no fluke, either. For the season, Jackson is throwing touchdowns on a completely insane 8.9% of his passes.

After the game, Jackson was rightfully treated like football royalty. Several Jets players lined up to collect autographed jerseys from No. 8.

What a scene.

As for the Panthers, like the rest of the NFL they should be watching what the Ravens are doing closely. While there’s only one Lamar Jackson, there are ways they can capitalize on Baltimore’s success and try to copy it. If nothing else, Carolina should be considering making a run at offensive coordinator Greg Roman, who deserves a lot of credit for helping Jackson make a stunning second-year leap.

This isn’t the first time Roman has gotten great results from a mobile quarterback, either. He also got the best out of Colin Kaepernick when he was the offensive coordinator for Jim Harbaugh’s 49ers. Even at his best, Kaepernick never reached the heights that a healthy Cam Newton has, though.

Norv Turner has performed relatively well running the offense these last couple of seasons. However, drastic changes are needed to break this team out of its sustained run of mediocrity. Pairing a truly innovative play-caller like Roman with Newton might make more of a difference than any one player the Panthers could sign this offseason.

Jonathan Stewart calls Panthers’ performance vs. Falcons ‘stale’

We can think of some other words, but this isn’t the place to share them.

Former Carolina running back Jonathan Stewart is watching the same train wreck we all are. The Panthers currently trail the Falcons 26-0 in the third quarter and about the only thing they’ve done right all day is stop the run. Stewart says the only word that comes to mind right now is stale.

We can think of some other words, but this isn’t the place to share them. Stale works pretty well, as it is. It implies the need for a fresh approach.

Starting out the top might not be a bad idea. Head coach Ron Rivera has been thoroughly outmatched by Falcons offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter, who is not having a good year and is missing two of his top weapons in Austin Hooper and Devonta Freeman. Rivera’s seat should be considerably hotter after this total lackluster effort from his team.

On offense, Kyle Allen is having his worst game yet in a Panthers uniform. He’s thrown three interceptions and could easily have a couple more.

In addition to getting dominated in all three phases, they’re beating themselves with penalties. They have lost 53 yards on seven flags so far.
