Vikings 2023 NFL draft scouting report: Ole Miss WR Jonathan Mingo

The Ole Miss wide receiver Jonathan Mingo has been a popular mid-round option for the Minnesota Vikings. How good is the film?

Welcome to SKOL Search!

This series will be your guide to the 2023 draft class. From scouting reports to mock drafts and exploring different scenarios, we will be covering the NFL draft and the future of the Minnesota Vikings from all angles.

The focus of the draft class in this space will be on the Vikings’ major needs at wide receiver, running back, cornerback and both interior and edge pass rusher.

The Vikings are slated to have five picks in the NFL draft and they need to make the most out of them.

Jonathan Mingo scouting report ahead of 2023 NFL Draft

Shaun Calderon’s takes a closer look at Ole Miss WR Jonathan Mingo ahead of the 2023 NFL draft.

Jonathan Mingo is next up on our scouting report series. The Ole Miss wide receiver is someone who is climbing up draft boards as of late, and for good reason.

Mingo is a big-bodied wideout who has superb athleticism. Following his impressive pre-draft workouts, he received the third-highest “Relative Athletic Score” among all of the wide receivers in the class.

This feat is even more impressive when you realize that he stands at six-foot-two, weighing in at 220 pounds. Not to mention the fact that he combines his physically-imposing frame with legitimate 4.4 speed and a 39.5-inch vertical.

Jonathan Mingo’s Relative Athletic Score (RAS) breakdown – Kent Lee Platte (@mathbomb)

As always, this article is going to provide you with an educated opinion on the pros and cons of selecting the All-SEC wide receiver. I also briefly touch on the unfair narrative that many have created that Mingo is “the next A.J. Brown.”

But before we get started, a quick reminder that unless noted otherwise, all of the grades and individual rankings that are included are my own opinions.

The former Rebel is coming off a season in which he totaled 861 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Let’s take a deeper dive and see what else makes him such an intriguing prospect.

Chargers 2023 NFL draft preview: Where does Los Angeles stand at wide receiver?

Our Chargers’ NFL draft preview series continues with the wide receiver position.

After taking a steady approach in free agency, signing just one external player in linebacker Eric Kendricks and re-signing a handful of their own, the Chargers now have their sights set on the draft where they will look to bolster their roster with their selections and make a deeper run in 2023.

Before, we’re going position by position to break down where Los Angeles stands entering the draft.

Breaking down Chargers’ selections in The Athletic’s latest 3-round mock draft

The Athletic’s Nick Baumgardner released his latest three-round projections, which have the Chargers addressing their biggest needs.

The Athletic’s Nick Baumgardner released his latest three-round projections, which have the Chargers addressing their biggest needs.

In Round 1, Los Angeles selects Utah tight end Dalton Kincaid.

Kincaid has been pegged as a top target for L.A. throughout the draft cycle, given their need to address the position as they search for a bonafide No. 1 TE since Hunter Henry.

Kincaid is a prolific receiver with great hands who can win all over the field with his athleticism and play speed and can create yards after the catch, projecting as a passing game playmaker for offensive coordinator Kellen Moore from Day 1.

Kincaid amassed 103 receptions for 1375 yards and 16 touchdowns in his four years as a starter for the Utes, with his best season coming in 2022. He racked up an impressive 890 yards on 70 catches. Additionally, Kincaid had the lowest drop rate percentage among TEs (2.8%).

In Round 2, the Bolts take Kansas State edge defender Felix Anudike-Uzomah.

The Chargers need more players capable of disrupting opposing quarterbacks behind Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack, and Anudike-Uzomah has shown plenty to fit that billing.

At 6-foot-3 and 255 pounds, Anudiki-Uzomah is a high-motored player with an excellent first step with the hips to bend the edge and flexibility to drop his shoulder to get under blockers, an array of pass rush moves and the functional strength to set the edge.

Arguably one of the most productive pass rushers in the nation, Adudike-Uzomah finished among Pro Football Focus’ top ten in overall grade, pass-rush grade, and defensive stops in 2022. He also had a 16.2% pressure rate (16th).

In Round 3, Los Angeles fulfills their need for speed at wide receiver by selecting Ole Miss’ Jonathan Mingo.

Mingo is a big-framed receiver at 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds who possesses speed in catch-and-run situations and down the field, explosiveness, good hands, leaping ability on 50/50 balls and physicality as a blocker.

Mingo caught 51 passes for 861 yards and five touchdowns in 13 games last season, marking the most productive season of his college career.

Mingo had an impressive showing at the combine, where he ran a 4.46-second 40-yard dash and tested well in the vertical (39.5 inches) and broad jumps (10-foot-9).

Vikings named perfect landing spot for Ole Miss wide receiver

The Minnesota Vikings need a wide reciever and ESPN’s Matt Bowen identified the perfect fit in the Ole Miss product.

The Minnesota Vikings are entering the NFL draft with multiple needs and how they address them has been a big topic of conversation. Getting a wide receiver is one of them and will likely be addressed early on.

ESPN’s Matt Bowen identified the perfect wide receiver fit for the Vikings in Ole Miss’ Jonathan Mingo in round three. The explanation of why makes a compelling case of Mingo being the perfect fit.

After the departure of veteran Adam Thielen, the Vikings could add someone like Mingo to the wide receiver room on Day 2 of the draft. And I really like the fit for him in Kevin O’Connell’s offense, given Mingo’s powerful frame, route detail and production after the catch.

The Vikings can create free access off the ball for Mingo with motion and creative formations, giving him targets on rhythm throws from quarterback Kirk Cousins. That’d provide schemed voids that also put Mingo in a position to get loose after the catch, where he averaged 7.4 yards after the reception in 2022. Finally, Mingo would have the slot flexibility in Minnesota’s system to fit well with the Vikings premier targets Justin Jefferson and T.J. Hockenson.

Mingo is a player that can play in both the slot and the outside and win with both physicality and athleticism. In the style of offense that Kevin O’Connell likes to play with wide receivers also being asked to block, this is a fantastic fit.

Giants address multiple needs in PFF’s latest 3-round mock draft

In the latest three-round mock draft from Pro Football Focus, the New York Giants load up at multiple areas of need.

Michael Renner of Pro Football Focus posted his latest three-round NFL mock draft and a few new names emerged as possible picks for the New York Giants.

Round 1, Pick 25: Cornerback Emmanuel Forbes, Mississippi State

You can’t have enough talent in the secondary when you blitz as much as defensive coordinator Wink Martindale wants to. And when you blitz that much, you want ball hawks on the back end. Who better to add to the mix than the FBS leader in pick-sixes?

Forbes isn’t projected by many experts as a Day 1 selection. He ran a 4.35 40 at the NFL Combine and sized up at 6-foot-6 and 166 pounds. He is known as an aggressive man-to-man cover guy and, with a few added pounds, could end up being a solid pro corner.

Round 2, Pick 57: Linebacker Trenton Simpson, Clemson

The Giants get their blitzing off-ball linebacker, and it didn’t cost them a first-rounder. Simpson is the most impressive all-around athlete in the linebacker class.

Solid pick with good size at 6-foot-2 and 235 pounds. Ran a 4.43 40 at the Combine. He may be gone by the time the Giants are on the clock here. If they can land Simpson, he’ll team up nicely with recently signed free agent Bobby Okereke.

Round 3, Pick 89: Wide receiver Jonathan Mingo, Ole Miss

NFL Network’s Lance Zierlein gives Mingo an NFL comp of former three-time Pro Bowler Anquan Bolden. That’s high praise. At 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds, Mingo is known as a physical receiver who can get tough yards after the catch.

The Giants already have enough slot receivers, so if Mingo can line up outside, he’ll be a nice addition.

Most fans would have no issue with this draft as all three players selected are at ‘need’ positions.

10 impact NFL draft prospects to consider at the Eagles biggest under-the-radar position of need

We’re looking at ten wide receiver prospects for the Philadelphia Eagles to consider in round two or three of the 2023 NFL Draft

The Eagles have one of the top wide receiver duos in the NFL, but the depth behind A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith leaves much to be desired.

Quez Watkins is the No. 3 wideout and a talented deep threat, but he has flaws and is coming off a down 2022 season,

Still, if the season started today, either Britain Covey, Tyrie Cleveland, Greg Ward, or Devon Allen would be the fourth option on the outside.

We recently looked at five potential options from the 2023 crop of free-agent wide receivers, but the pickings are slim, and the production is questionable going forward.

Philadelphia should address the position in the NFL draft, while a talented veteran looking to play for a winning organization could also add value.

With the NFL draft less than a month away, here are ten wide receivers to consider at the Eagles’ most significant under-the-radar position of need.

Report: Patriots to meet with Ole Miss playmaking wide receiver

The Patriots are meeting with this top playmaking receiver from Ole Miss.

The New England Patriots are still looking for options at wide receiver via the NFL draft, and they have a visit scheduled with Ole Miss wideout Jonathan Mingo, per WCBI-TV’s Jon Sokoloff.

Mingo measures in at 6-foot-2, 220 pounds. He was a key piece for the Rebels’ offense last season, recording 51 catches for 861 yards and five touchdowns. Throughout his collegiate career, he tallied 112 catches for 1,758 yards and 12 touchdowns.

This is a notable visit, given that Mingo is not expected to be one of the top wide receivers in this year’s draft. New England could grab him as a value pick, while also adding depth to the position. The Patriots still need weapons at wide receiver, and they have been connected to veteran playmakers throughout the course of the offseason.

DeAndre Hopkins and Jerry Jeudy have been two of the bigger names in that regard.

The Patriots have conducted several pre-draft visits with players from multiple positions during the process. At the very least, they are doing their homework, as the offense looks to rejuvenate itself under Bill O’Brien.

Vikings 2023 7 round mock draft 8.0: Draft defense early & often

In the eighth edition of the Vikings seven-round mock draft, @TheRealForno looks explores going defense with the first four picks.

The Minnesota Vikings have a lot of different ways they can go in the NFL draft. There will be some discussion on what needs are most important but the Vikings can address most of them through both free agency and the NFL draft.

I have now done seven mock drafts for the Vikings this offseason and they all have taken a slightly different turn each time. This one has the Vikings trading back and focusing on the defense with the first four picks.

Titans go OT, TE, WR in Chad Reuter’s 4-round mock draft

Chad Reuter of NFL.com gives the Titans a pretty good haul in his latest four-round mock draft.

In his recent four-round mock draft, Chad Reuter of NFL.com has the Tennessee Titans addressing some major needs in the 2023 NFL draft.

Reuter has the Titans taking offensive tackle Peter Skoronski in Round 1, tight end Darnell Washington in Round 2 and wide receiver Jonathan Mingo in Round 3. Of course, Tennessee doesn’t have a fourth-round selection.

Here’s what Reuter said about the pick of Skoronski:

Skoronski could compete for the left tackle job, but he also has the strength, mobility and intelligence to slide in at guard (replacing Nate Davis) or center (replacing Ben Jones).

I’m not often a fan of Reuter’s mocks, but this one is pretty good.

Skoronski offers a possible long-term solution at left tackle, but he could also fill the void at left guard if the Titans want to roll with Andre Dillard there in 2023. That said, I’d prefer Paris Johnson, who was still on the board in this mock.

Washington is an absolute unit at 6-foot-7 and 264 pounds and would be a good fit as the No. 2 tight end. His size is a tough assignment for defenses, especially in the red zone, and has the tools to be a good blocker. Further, Washington would allow Tennessee to utilize Chig from different spots.

Mingo is another good selection as a physical receiver who can work inside and out. He also adds some speed, as evidenced by his 4.46 40.

While I like the players chosen overall, I’d prefer Tennessee address wide receiver earlier than this. However, taking a tight end like Washington in that spot would be a solid consolation prize.
